[Bug 485084] Re: Ubuntu (Win) key cannot be programed to open Ubuntu Menu

2009-11-19 Thread Steve McGrath
This is for the same reason that Ctrl, Alt, or Shift cannot be assigned
to an action by themselves. The Windows, or Super key is generally
considered a modifier just like the aforementioned Ctrl, Alt, and etc.

On the other hand, Windows does manage to use the Win key to open the
start menu, while still retaining its use as a modifier in shortcuts
such as Win+R, Win+D, etc. So perhaps this could be considered a
wishlist item.

[Bug 467427] Re: F-spot cannot connect to Canon A70 camera when Nautilus is set to automatically open F-spot for photos

2009-11-19 Thread brianM
Same problem with my HP Photosmart 715 camera. Nautilus seems to lock
the file and not allow F-spot import to get access. This is a Karmic
issue and worked perfectly in 9.04. I get a different error message (see
below) and my work around for now is to copy to disk via nautilus them
run F-spot import from that.

Sorry for the lack of response. I was in the final months of my
Engineering degree when i filed the bug, leaving me little time to do

latest copy of Ubuntu Karmic and the problem has not recurred. It
appears to have been some sort of temporary regression or glitch in the

[Bug 361370] Re: Link isn't created

2009-11-19 Thread David Prieto
I might have just discovered something relevant.

As you know, when you change a note's title the text in links pointing
to it change. If I have the sentence Thomas Jefferson wrote the
American [L]Declaration of Independence[/L], where the text between
[L][/L] points to another note:

1 - If I change the note's title to the Declaration of Independence,
the original sentence would change too: Thomas Jefferson wrote the
American [L]the Declaration of Independence[/L], where an additional
the has been added.

2 - If instead I remove the word American, the link disappears:
Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence.

3 - However, if I remove the word American AND then I change the
note's title to the Declaration of Independence, the original sentence
reads: Thomas Jefferson wrote [L]the Declaration of Independence[/L]

That is: instead of adding an additional the, Tomboy recognises the
article that was already there and adds it to the link. I am pretty sure
that this article recognition is probably intentional, but related to
the described problem.

This obviously isn't specific to Ubuntu or Firefox. There's a lot lot
lot more to it. I looked over many work-arounds and I came to the
conclusion that what I came up with wasn't a work-around but rather the
best way to manually install these packages (java/flash).

It's off topic for here but perhaps this will help some of you. DO NOT

Thanks Sebastien. Okay, I made a report upstream. Or actually, I added a

[Bug 378954] Re: Memory leakage when editing photos

2009-11-19 Thread Nick Sarten
I just replicated this bug on karmic with the following process:
1. Import a couple hundred photos into F-spot.
2. Go through each photo, using different operations from the edit menu on
photos in the album.
3. Observe the memory usage for different operations

The result was a gradual and consistent increase in memory usage as more
photos were edited. I have not been able to make precise enough
measurements to determine which editing operations affect the memory
usage and are causing the leak, but i suspect there are problems with
multiple operations. The Straighten operation seems to be a definite
culprit, and a good candidate for further testing (along with the other
edit operations). Only 10 or so images/edits should be required to
generate a noticeable memory usage increase. I also haven't yet tested
whether performing multiple edits on a single image has the same effect.

I will report this upstream as soon as i have posted this new
information here. Sorry for the slow response, i have finally come to
the end of my final year of university, so have a little more time
available for this sort of detail. I will post again once i have
submitted the upstream report.

2009-11-19 Thread Nick Sarten
I have reported the bug upstream at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=602390.

I have also confirmed that the Straighten operation can be applied
multiple times to a single photo to reproduce the bug.

I am sure this is not the only edit operation with this memory leak, as
i did not use this operation when i originally filed this bug, so i am
sure at least one of the other edit operations also trigger this bug.

[Bug 485249] [NEW] [karmic] Battery fill level is off; system shutting down early

2009-11-19 Thread Arne Caspari
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Ubuntu 9.10, Macbook 1,1

gnome-power-manager indicates a Energy when fully charged ( translated
from German so the actual english label might differ ) of 1357,0 Wh (
which is incorrect, of course ) and a Design Energy of 50,2Wh ( which is
probably right ).

The charge level is obviously calculated from the Energy when fully
charged so gnome-power-manager always indicates a critical charge ( 4
% ). Sometimes the systems shuts down because of a critical battery
level ( even though it correctly indicates that there is 1 hour of
running time left ).

[Bug 485271] [NEW] Invalid Drop Target results in stuck mouse

2009-11-19 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

If you attempt to drag an icon of off the Applications-Accessories menu
quickly, you will sometimes get a dialog pop-up stating something like
Invalid Drop Target. This occurs without letting go the left mouse
button. Once it does occur, the mouse gets stuck in drop mode and you
can not interact with the desktop or any open application. You are
forced to go to a virtual terminal and kill the gnome-session to
recover. My exact reproducible scenario is to try to quickly drag the
gnome-terminal icon from the Applications-Accessories menu to the
Docky bar in gnome-do.

[Bug 439448] Re: notification area shows wrong icons. erratic behaviour

2009-11-19 Thread Torsten Streit
The problem solved for me today, upgraded my GFX card (old nvidia with usage of
nvidia driver version 173).
The new card supports the latest drivers by ubuntu (version 185) and since this
update the problem has gone.

So in my case, it is/was nvidia driver related.

I have the same problem. I want to upload more information about my

[Bug 484715] Re: [Ubuntu 9.10] reduce the backlight brightness when on battery power is not working

2009-11-19 Thread RodGer
I can confirm this. It seems like there is no access to the display
brightness information due to a lack of suitable driver. I believe it is
a hardware specific problem as there is no such problem on my
girlfriend's laptop (as I can remember right now). On my laptop there is
also an other instance of the same problem: the panel applet named
'Power Manager Brightness Applet 2.28.1' appears with a red prohibitive
sign and when I mouse over it, it says 'cannot get laptop panel
brightness'.

[Bug 461379] Re: reduce backlight brightness sets brightness level incorrectly

Funny. Today it constantly switches to /minimum/ brightness when I touch

appropriate slider to the very left) does not stop this... The logic of
these algorythms should be thoroughly checked.

[Bug 192009] Re: gnome panel has no way to specify on which screen it should appear

2009-11-19 Thread donal
In my case, I use a laptop also with external VGA.
I just installed Karmic over Intrepid.

With Karmic the laptop comes up as primary but I want the Ext. VGA as primary
when it is plugged in.
I've had to add a script to switch both off and reset the External as Primary
after each restart (of which I have lot because of lots of various issues with
karmic). The reset script only works about one third of the time, (causing
blank screen the other two thirds).

With Intrepid the External was Primary when plugged in, (as I would expect most
people using an external would require).
Configure Display has no option for setting this though what I would wish to
revert to is a way to say Use External Display As Primary When Present.

[Bug 485297] [NEW] p key wrong keybinding

2009-11-19 Thread jamarks
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

Using the 'p' key while typing in the location bar or in find links mode
does not behave as it should. It selects all the previous text I entered
in location bar. Typing 'P' in the location bar works as one would
expect and gives me a capital 'P', in which case I will then be able to
use the 'p' key for the rest of my entry. This effect occurs whether I'm
in caret mode or not.

I'm using the US keymap and a logitech MK300 keyboard. The 'p' key works
as expected in all other programs.

2009-11-19 Thread Andreas Bilke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: seahorse

package: seahorse
release: ubuntu 9.10
version: 2.28.1-0ubuntu1

Situation:
I have imported a public pgp key which is signed by some people.
If i try to display the people which has signed this one, i get only the
entries of those which i trust (thats correct, this is the default behavior).

Than i shall get the key information about this signer, but i get the
information of an other key (which has also signed that public key, but
is not trusted by me so i cant see this key at this dialog).

[Bug 485327] [NEW] seahorse folds subkeys when clicking on a subkey

2009-11-19 Thread Andreas Bilke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: seahorse

In the other keys view, you can unfold a key, which has subkeys
assigned. if i click on a subkey entry a new popup arises, but in the
background the the unfolded key folds anew. This behavior is not what I
expect.

[Bug 397192] Re: nautilus becomes non-responsive during video-playback

2009-11-19 Thread donal
Yes, I'm seeing a similar issue on folders which have video files.
Terminal will list the files but Nautilus will wait continuously trying to
update the folder.

If I switch NautilusEditPreferencesPreview to Never Preview, all
files will display.

I also thought it was mainly folders where files had been copied into them, but
I've just had it replicate on one of the main offending folders when no files
were moved or copied, I was just changing views between various tabs on the
different drives.

Changing the Minimum file preview size has no effect.
Size of file where problem is occurring for me is at least 150MB, much smaller
than reported above.
In my case it's happening on two FAT32 external drives.

I've tried replicating with smaller (30mb) PDFs and MP3 files of
approx. 100mb but not finding it, though I've only made brief checks.

[Bug 60079] Re: shopt xsession error upon login

2009-11-19 Thread joe14
While researching this problem further, I stumbled across this page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DashAsBinSh

Prior to the release of 6.10, Ubuntu developers made a conscious
decision to change the default shell (the shell that is used to load
scripts in /etc/profile.d) from bash to dash. dash is smaller and faster
than bash, and its use increases the speed of startup operations. Having
read about this decision, I do not see this problem as a bug and I
withdraw my request to have this bug re-opened.

I would however like advice on how to circumvent this problem.

[Bug 485352] [NEW] window list applet style changes when I visit a specific website

2009-11-19 Thread Jean-Philippe Fleury
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

My window list applet style is usually on 2 lines when I have more
than 1 window opened. See the attached screen shot usual-display.png.

However, when I open a specific website on a browser (I can reproduce
the bug with Firefox, Epiphany or liferea), the window list applet
style changes to be only on 1 line. See the attached screen shot
changed-display.png.

I can always reproduce this bug with these steps:

1) gnome-panel preferences containing the window list applet are like
in the attached screen shot gnome-panel-preferences.png.

2) window list applet preferences are like in the attached screen shot
window-list-applet-preferences.png.

3) I open more than 1 window, including a browser (for exemple Firefox
and gedit).

4) On the browser, I visit the website http://sisinmaru.blog17.fc2.com/

Then the window list applet style changes.

[Bug 35545] Re: Doesn't display animated GIFs

Meantime, it's easy to install gthumb and set that to open your GIF's.

Nice to see I won't have to do this with Lucid. Thanks guys :) It's so
easy to complain, but anyone using this can see that vast improvements
are taking place - and most people just don't appreciate how huge this
task is.

[Bug 197288] Re: [hardy] new windows are put in background when a window has always on top set

2009-11-19 Thread Toby Murray
I think this bug still exists in 9.10. I notice it when having a video
playing in vlc or mplayer that I set to always on top. Then if I open
a new application, sometimes the new window does not get focus. Focus
stays on whichever window had focus before I opened the new one. However
not all applications are affected. For example if I open the calculator
(gcalctool) it gets focus correctly. However gnome-terminal windows do
not get focus. Chrome gets focus, the gnome games don't. Not sure what
the determining factor is.

[Bug 416543] Re: devhelp crashed with SIGSEGV

2009-11-19 Thread Sense Hofstede
I recognise your trace, I've posted the same one to the upstream report
of bug #454264: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=601972. I'm
talking about this trace:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/page.cgi?id=trace.htmltrace_id=219133.

Could you please say if the symptoms described in these bugs apply to your
crashes as well? Upstream suggests it could be a bug in WebKit:
https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30163. Could you please have a look
at that bug as well?
Thanks in advance.

[Bug 130786] Re: [gutsy] NetworkManager Feature Request - manually trigger ssid scan

2009-11-19 Thread tz
This goes back to Gutsy and is not yet fixed in Karmic. Supposedly it
is fixed in the Gnome branch but is a wontfix here?

It is still stupid that I have to disable and enable wireless just to
see my access point when I can watch windows, two cell phones, Mac OSX
and everything else find it in under 2 seconds.

Try holding your breath for 20 seconds (use a stopwatch or a seconds
display).

But that is only sometimes and if I activate the applet - it still takes
2 minutes to automatically find an AP even when it is completely
disconnected.

You don't like or want to put in manual scans? THEN FIX THE AUTOMATIC
SCAN!

[Bug 485370] [NEW] g-p-m doesn't show enough information

2009-11-19 Thread David Jaša
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

See the Bug #462267. Now with battstat applet gone, its features should
be added to g-p-m so that user comfort is not harmed.

g-p-m shows only icon in status area. The icon can express only limited
amount of information and even then it is not used to its full
potential. Now the icon can show only battery states (external power
only, battery charging, battery charged, battery with high/low/very
low/critically low remaining capacity discharging).

Precise information is displayed in tooltip only. That means that user
needs to get used to interrupt regularly work on some battery, move the
cursor to the icon, wait for tooltip to appear, read the information and
then to resume work. All of this must be often done with integrated
pointing devices that are much slower and much more precise than regular
mouse.

I request these features to be added to g-p-m's UI to fix mentioned
usability flaw:

1) add a keyboard shortcut that would display notification bubble with
actual power state (and let know about it in tooltip, g-p-m settings or
another place that is likely to be visited by plain user)

2) icon modification so it displays actual charge in analog way. The
battery inside of Humanity g-p-m icon on my computer is 11 px high so
it should drop 1 px for every 100/11 = 9 discharged percents of
capacity. (And of course rise for every 9 % recharged.)

3) option to display remaining time or percents permanently

4) option to show large battery in style of battstat's two icons mode or
in style of Lenovo's Battery MaxiMiser gauge (see attachments)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!
