[Bug 478674] Re: nautilus doesn't show videos in a folder (and mouse cursor is busy)
Hi again, In fact, it happens very often, and not only in video folders. It always happens in the same directories. The bug is confirmed on my girlfriend computer (with a folder which doesn't contain any video, but images), and a colleague had the same problem once. It is reproductible (it doesn't always happens, but quite often) once it already happened on a folder. ** Summary changed: - nautilus doesn't show videos in a folder (and mouse cursor is busy) + nautilus doesn't show the content of a folder (and mouse cursor is busy) ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- nautilus doesn't show the content of a folder (and mouse cursor is busy) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/478674 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 305546] Re: Nautilus crashing/freezing when opening folder with svg file
I am affected by the same problem. Nautilus hangs when entering a folder with svg files and ff hangs as well if I try to upload the file. I can open it without any problems in Inkscape. [Bug 478134] Re: Totem silent in VMware Player after Koala upgrade
Sorry I'm slow getting back to you on this. I sort of hoped it was just the usual glitches (even though they're supposed to be ready to release the software when they release it)... However, it appears the sound- related problems are much more serious than I understood at the time, and much more widespread. With regards to your specific question, I can respond that all of the sound-related applications are apparently unable to work with the sound card. Probably as a result of one of the recent upgrades, it has started emitting a few clicks from time to time, but there is no sound on a machine that worked fine until the Koala upgrade. I wasn't using any of the other sound applications on that machine, so it took me a while to figure out what to test and how. Since then I've tried the live Koala CD and a Koala upgrade on a different machine. In both cases the sound is not working. These were NOT using VMware, but actual hardware. The first machine with the VMware Player is a Lenovo X61, and the other machine is a Sharp laptop. The Sharp has always had a number of minor peculiarities, but has basically worked well enough under earlier releases of Ubuntu, and there has never been any problem with the sound card (on either machine, as far as I can recall). At this point my feelings towards Ubuntu are declining pretty steeply. I don't have a lot of spare time that I want to spend trying to debug problems with the OS... I regard Microsoft or Apple as clutching evils, but I don't feel like Ubuntu is offering much of an option these days. I guess I'll continue struggling with Ubuntu for a while, but I sure can't recommend it based on my experiences with the last few releases... I think I had some trouble with my first one, too, but that was a long time ago and I figured it was just the normal learning curve, but these kinds of crippling problems are just not going to work... *sigh* I want to close on a constructive note, so I'll include a link to the following alternative mechanism for funding the production of better open source software, but I'm feeling pretty discouraged about all of this stuff right now. I really hate using Microsoft garbage. http://metablog-shanen.blogspot.com/2009/11/economics-of-small-donors- reverse.html -- Totem silent in VMware Player after Koala upgrade https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/478134 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Thanks, Nikos Correct, pommed is supposed to be used together with Karmic. The reason is the deprecation of HAL; Ubuntu, like several other large distros, are moving away from hal in favor of udev and the DeviceKit effort. As a result, Karmic is suffering from functionlity regressions in certain areas, the backlight handling being one of them. Supposedly, these regressions will all be properly addressed in Lucid, and in the meantime, the pommed package (with some minor changes) is suitable as a stand-in. -- Brightness hotkeys not working on MacBook 5,2 and 4,1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/434071 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 83142] Re: crash on XSetIMValues() call when using xim and esperanto locale
The bug is still present in Ubuntu-9.10 Karmic Koala. The patch I submited in previous comment needs to be changed because Esperanto locale is no longer eo_XX.UTF-8 but it is now eo.UTF-8. So in files /usr/share/X11/locale/compose.dir and /usr/share/X11/locale/locale.dir, we need to substitute eo_XX.UTF-8 into eo.UTF-8. In other words, in file /usr/share/X11/locale/locale.dir, lines... en_US.UTF-8/XLC_LOCALE eo.UTF-8 ... en_US.UTF-8/XLC_LOCALE: eo.UTF-8 ... need to be changed into: en_US.UTF-8/XLC_LOCALE eo.UTF-8 ... en_US.UTF-8/XLC_LOCALE: eo.UTF-8 And in file /usr/share/X11/locale/compose.dir, lines... en_US.UTF-8/Compose eo_XX.UTF-8 ... en_US.UTF-8/Compose:eo_XX.UTF-8 ... need to be changed into: en_US.UTF-8/Compose eo.UTF-8 ... en_US.UTF-8/Compose:eo.UTF-8 After doing that, everything works fine in Ubuntu-9.10 (so it's easy to fix): - compose key then works - launching xterm no longer complains unsupported locale - and Vim no longer crash -- crash on XSetIMValues() call when using xim and esperanto locale https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/83142 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 39328] Re: Disable scrolling on window list to flip through windows
How do you tell users the way of scrolling has been changed? Users have been scrolling using the edges of the touchpad for years. You can't just change this to two-fingers scroll. If the edges don't work in a new release of Ubuntu, they'll think the developers screwed up the touchpad drivers and just re-install an older version of Ubuntu where this bug didn't excist. Yes, I know it's just disabled and users can re-enable it, but they don't know. How does the user know he has to use two fingers to scroll? The best way is to show a window showing an animated picture of how to scroll in this new version of Ubuntu. This windows should be displayed for every user which logs on for the first time if Ubuntu detects a Synaptics touchpad. [Bug 12040] Re: GNOME Main Menu panel applet slow to open on first click (NOT compiz related)
For me, the delay is unappreciated, less than a sec (~ 0.5s). I think the next will improve the behavior: I've edit (create) ~/.gtkrc-2.0, adding gtk-menu-popup-delay = 0 I'm sure that there is no problem when you have Menu Bar loaded into the panel too, so you can put the Main Menu next to the Menu Bar and you will see Ubuntu logo twice. But if you want to have the Main Menu alone (like i want) the problem will persist. So the problem is not gnome-panel neither gnome-menu-bar, it's gnome- main-menu. [Bug 489934] [NEW] ipod songs no longer showing up on iPod (nano) after sync
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox ipod songs no longer showing up on iPod (nano) after sync I upgraded to karmic a week or two ago, and I think (not 100% sure) this was the first time I synced music with rhythmbox after the upgrade -- I've been syncing using rhythmbox ever since I bought the iPod about a year ago in jaunty (the 9.04 version -- I think it was jaunty). In either case, I have an iPod Nano 8GB (model no. A1285). I had a coupe of gbs of music on it and went in and deleted and added a bunch of songs earlier. When I finally tried to eject the device through rhythmbox I got a Device is busy message, so I closed rhythmbox and looked around for some other app or terminal which might be sitting on the iPod, found none, then finally ejected by right clicking on the IPOD icon on the desktop. The iPod shows up with 0 songs. I plug it back in and in rhythmbox, all the songs are there as they should. So I try removing them all, then ejecting, then pluggging back in, then adding some songs and ejecting, but it still shows up with 0 songs. After this, I tried Amarok but it won't find the device. I tried Banshee but it won't find the device. The only app that finds it is rhythmbox, but it just can't seem to make the iPod recognize the songs it puts on. The iPod keeps saying 0 songs, whereas rhythmbox keeps saying it's all there. So I deleted all files in the /media/IPOD/ folder and ejected. This reset the device -- got the Apple logo, had to choose language etc. and all. Plugging it back in, rhythmbox now says it wants to initialize it and asks me to pick model and give it a name. I obediently do so and am followed by a long wait and an error, which says that the file .../SysInfo is empty. I go in and fill that file in with the 16 digit id (detailed elsewhere, for Amarok IIRC), save, eject, remount, try it in rhythmbox and this time it looks like it's working, but rhythmbox doesn't ACTUALLY change the name even though it asks me for one (it still goes iPod). I try to put one song on, eject it, but nothing shows up. 0 songs. I reformat the IPOD from the desktop, eject it, get the choose language stuff again, plug it back in, try adding one song to it, eject it, and still 0 songs. [Bug 486862] Re: rotating a jpg photo (eg CTRL+R), then saving it (eg CTRL+S), moves a few lines or columns of pixels from one end to the opposite
I can reproduce this here (see screenshot), confirming. The issue is that the pixel size of the jpg is not a multiple of 8. This makes lossless jpg rotation impossible, but eog is not smart enough to do something about it. gThumb will give you a warning message and gives you the option to truncate the image to the next multiple of 8. ** Attachment added: screenshot original buggy rotated.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/36230495/screenshot%20original%20buggy%20rotated.png -- rotating a jpg photo (eg CTRL+R), then saving it (eg CTRL+S), moves a few lines or columns of pixels from one end to the opposite https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/486862 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to eog in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 322909] Re: future gnome-volume-control has many use case regressions with move to Pulse Audio
IMHO, regardless this is caused by hardware or not, the behaviour of Pulseaudio's volume control is too complicated. It is not clear which tracks are controlled and in what order. After upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 sound and media keys worked out of the box (good job for this). However, the volume control using the gnome-applet resp. media keys was, let's say weired. Pulseaudio lowered the master volume first, then the PCM channel and the headphone channel (which I use as output) last. This resulted in a nearly constant volume level over the whole volume range (in the gnome panel) - not linear variying or something similar. It tooks me several hours of investigations to find the solution proposed above. I set the Master and PCM channel to 'ignore', set the desired levels in 'alsamixer' and everything is nice. This must be simplified by adding a graphical interface or emphasizing the Pulseaudio documentation. I'm not sure I'll have the time to try implementing this for Lucid. perl is not very hard to understand when you have priori knowledge of C or another similar language. [Bug 490009] [NEW] Changing keyboard model causes XKB configuration error
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center This is much like bug #221196, but is causing trouble in my Ubuntu 9.10 VirtualBox installation. The hardware is an Intel MacBook Pro (purchased in October 2009). The source package seems to be gnome-settings-daemon. To recreate the bug I go to System-Preferences-Keyboard and in the Keyboard Preferences window I select the Layouts tab. I then click on the box to the right of Keyboard model: to select a new layout. I select Apple as the vendor. Now, whenever I select MacBook/Macbook Pro, MacBook/MacBook Pro (Intl), or Macintosh, I get the following error dialogue: -- Error activating XKB configuration. It can happen under various circumstances: - a bug in libxklavier library - a bug in X server (xkbcomp, xmodmap utilities) - X server with incompatible libxkbfile implementation X server version data: The X.Org Foundation 10604000 If you report this situation as a bug, please include: - The result of xprop -root | grep XKB - The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd --- The included results are as follows: matt...@mattbook-linux:~$ xprop -root | grep XKB _XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = evdev, pc105, us, mac, lv3:ralt_switch _XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = evdev, pc105, us, mac, lv3:ralt_switch matt...@mattbook-linux:~$ gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd layouts = [us mac] options = [lv3 lv3:ralt_switch,grp grp:alts_toggle] model = macbook79 - matt...@mattbook-linux:~$ apt-cache policy gnome-control-center gnome-control-center: Installed: 1:2.28.1-0ubuntu1 Candidate: 1:2.28.1-0ubuntu1 Version table: *** 1:2.28.1-0ubuntu1 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 Date: Sun Nov 29 10:05:28 2009 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10 ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/gnome-keyboard-properties InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala - Release i386 (20091028.5) Package: gnome-control-center 1:2.28.1-0ubuntu1 ProcEnviron: LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-14.48-generic SourcePackage: gnome-control-center Uname: Linux 2.6.31-14-generic i686 ** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 -- Changing keyboard model causes XKB configuration error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/490009 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
