[Bug 475426] Re: atk_object_set_name: assertion `name != NULL' failed

2010-03-18 Thread patrix
After compliation installation of Qt 4.6.1 on my system (Ubuntu
Karmic), I am noting same bug with various Qt Developer GUI - Tools like
assistant, linguist, designer.

Eg :

$ assistant

** (unknown:24424): CRITICAL **: atk_object_set_name: assertion `name !=
NULL' failed

According to following discussion thread on nokia forum for Qt.

http://www.forum.nokia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=189084

The problem for Qt Toolkit seems to be GTK-style. If I run same application
with different style
the error does not appear.

Eg : $ assistant -style plastique
---
More astonishing is the fact that if I switch to Karmic repository version of
Qt ( i.e 4.5.2), The
critical error message disappears.

[Bug 540691] Re: sound problem

2010-03-18 Thread Mitch Towner
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

I have re-assigned this back to the defaukt Ubuntu task as it is not a
yelp issue.

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-18 Thread Jordi Puigdellívol
XDD I'm really impressed how this decision has made so many noise,
they're are just buttons!! and can be changed!! so, where's the problem?
that everybody is used to the buttons to the right?, well, everybody is
used to other OS too

1. I agree in putting buttons to left, they're better when you're used to them
(So you need to use them for a while)
2. Everybody can do what he wants, even change its position, so why bothering?

Re: [Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-18 Thread Mark Shuttleworth
@aysiu

The problem with your Forums post is that it says this is what really
happened and is, in fact, quite incorrect.

Some members of the design team asked that the window controls be
grouped on the left, and presented the visualisation. So it wasn't that
I prefer it that way. I didn't like it initially, anticipating that it
would generate a great deal of resistance. However, it does line things
up nicely for work I would like us to do in future. And the major
argument against it appears solely to be we're used to it here, which
is important, but not overriding.

 I get it now.

Thanks for the clarification, and all of these great one-liners.

There's a job waiting for you at a tabloid, if that's how you treat

You can throw your toys out of the cot, but other than expressing a
personal preference, you haven't informed the discussion at all. Most
importantly, you do NOT have a say in *everything*. Anybody is welcome
to participate, and it's worth building a reputation for yourself as
being competent at something. If the community process *works*, that
competence will be rewarded with the ability to make tough decisions.

At the moment, your approach is not highlighting any particular
competence on your part, other than for aggressive and unhelpful
argument backed by a willingness to twist people's words - not something
we have a department for in Ubuntu.

[Bug 540776] [NEW] Gdm theme makes it impossible to see accessibility option

2010-03-18 Thread Dave Morley
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

The new gdm theme makes it near impossible to see the power options but
more importantly the accessibility options.

The colouring is very pale grey against pale grey.

Remember that the accessibility options are there for the partially
sighted so squint your eyes and look at the new gdm screen and see if
you can see them now.

These should be contrasting colours so it stands out not merges in.

[Bug 263211] Re: apps-wont-open-due-to-maximum-clients-reached-error

2010-03-18 Thread Florent Viard
Hi,
I'm also affected by this bug with ubuntu 9.10.
Maybe it goes faster to trigger in my case as I have 2 monitors.

It could be related to kdelibs as i installed them to be able to use Kate.
And I noticed that kate used 1 client connection for each file opened as a tab
in my kate window.
Closing a kate with 3 tabs reduced my xlsclients | wc -l from 44 to 38 removing
4 kates and 2 knotify4.

Isn't there a tweak to change xlsclients max value ? Because 56 looks

[Bug 540744] Re: Brasero didn't work

2010-03-18 Thread Bruno Girin
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

===

2. Le fonctionnement attendu;
3. Le fonctionnement réel avec le plus de détails possible; en particulier, si
un message d'erreur s'affiche, pouvez-vous le fournir? Des copies d'écran sont
aussi un excelllent moyen de fournir ces informations.

Merci

[Bug 540808] [NEW] Screen refreshes on enter button press. Any login details that have already been entered are cleared meaning they have to be reentered.

2010-03-18 Thread DarrenShare
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I suspect this is due to a combination of proprietary Nvidia drivers and
Plymouth.

At the login screen, hitting the enter key causes the screen to reset.
If I've already entered my username and password this is cleared so it
has to be entered again. Subsequent presses of the enter key behave
normally.

It appears as though it's switching display drivers (which is how I
understand Plymouth is able to work with Nvidia drivers)

[Bug 540775] Re: when log off no panel appear if you disable password on log on

2010-03-18 Thread meborc
Ok,

To explain a little: Ubuntu users, who have disabled password logins are
unable to switch desktop environments due to the fact that the selection
menu appears only after selecting the user. In the case of no set
password, the user selection leads to automatic login.

This is a serious oversight!

Ugly fix: add another user with password enabled. Log out, click on the
new user name, switch the desktop environment and click on your default
user.

[Bug 540813] [NEW] wrong /usr/share/applications/desktop.$locale.cache files

2010-03-18 Thread Valentijn Sessink
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-menus

After installing Lucid 10.04-alpha on 2010-03-17 (from a preseeded PXE
install), the /usr/share/applications/desktop.nl_NL.utf8.cache file
contains many, many English descriptions of the applications - so the
Gnome menus are filled with English descriptions. The system language is
nl_NL.utf8 (and, in fact, a cache file that has nl_NL.utf8 should
*never* get the English descriptions in the menus when there are
nl_NL.utf8 descriptions available).

Running the (undocumented) update-gnome-menus-cache in this directory
fixes things, but there's a couple of bad practices here:

- the documentation for various packages doesn't tell about
update-gnome-menus-cache.
- update-gnome-menus-cache doesn't even have a man page
- For example, trying to add a new screensaver-type by hand does not work when
you put a .desktop file in /usr/share/applications/screensavers/. In fact,
*deleting* a .desktop file there does not remove the screensaver from the
screensaver settings menu!
- a cache file should not reside in /usr/share/applications/
- *if* you cache files, you should make sure the cached file will be rebuilt.

In this case, a wrong desktop.$i18n.cache file will get all menus wrong,
and there seems nothing you can do about it.

Troy, empathy dont have any implementation for Facebook chat it just
uses the method of gtalk, upstream developers of empathy also highly
dislike the type of protocol support that facebook supports. can you
please confirm if this is still an issue. How many contacts of yours are
online, this might be due to a large number of online contacts?

[Bug 540830] [NEW] Totem resumes at position mm:ss, but slider at position 00:00

2010-03-18 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

After totem has crashed/been restarted, it will resume the previous file
at the previous position. The audio is correct and so is the time
counter, however the slider stays are position zero, preventing movement
around the file.

Further: if the audio is paused, and then unpaused, the audio will start
from the beginning, but the interface will be non-responsive (expect for
further returning to the beginning).

Ideally the slider should always match the audio being played and should
also be responsive to user input.

Sorry - tried but unable to run gdb in the short time that Aesop's Fables (Live

However I did find that if Aesop's Fables is played via Rythmbox there is no

I'd be willing to explore further but need guidance.

Re: [Bug 540168] Re: gnome-volume-control USB Mic sound preferences

2010-03-18 Thread ericlesoll
Hello,

Thank you for responding so quick.

2010/3/17 Sebastien Bacher seb...@ubuntu.com

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
 better. Please answer these questions:

  * Is this reproducible?

Yes,

  * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

You plug a USB headset or Analogue you open gnome-volume-control , you can
only adjust capture volume from microphone.

 * Could you make clear what else you would want to see happen?

In 8.04, 8.10 and 9.04 in gnome-volume-control in preferences you could
select volume input microphone for recording
or listening. Since 9.10 it's impossible by GUI, I thought it will be fixed
in 10.04 because is regression, we are using that for Open Source Digital
language laboratory based on italc and pulseaudio ( LLSOLL project).
The only way to tune the microphone listening volume is to open Alsamixer in
terminal mode, it is not user-friendly for students and teachers.
There are 2 items in alsamixer for microphone :

   1. Mic : is the loopback of your voice
   2. Capture : is the volume for recording

Is not user-friendly for students and teachers.

Best regards

Eric

I'm using several USB headset with chip set C-MEDIA. To hear my voice

there are 2 fields for microphone :

Now the GUI is different there is only one for recording you can select

I found a temporary solution using alsamixer, I'm administrator of several

 It's not friendly.

Above all if I remove legacy sound card in bios to take USB card by default
I can't launch alsamixer I get this message : cannot open mixer : No such

I agree that controls should by default be placed where it used to be.
On the other hand, after a second thought,i would like to have the choice to
place controls wherever i like.
Personally i place the task bar at the bottom side of the screen (KDE-like)
so it would be more convenient for me
to have the controls at the low-left side of the window, in short distance
from main menu's and browser's buttons.

[Bug 540325] Re: Facebook Contacts do not show up

2010-03-18 Thread Troy Clayton82176
Hi Omar,

Yes 3 am still having this issue. After I posted the bug, my contacts
mysteriously appearred. However, the disappeared again after a few
minutes and haven't come back again.

I don't have a high number of contacts, so I don't think that may be the
issue. I usually ony have 5-15 friends online at a time.

I installed Pidgin and it seems to be working flawlessly. But, I would
rather use Empathy for a single program.

I clicked on the link to try and report this upstream like you asked.
I am new to Linux, and very new to bug reporting. Unfortunately, I
wasn't sure where to go, or how to, report the bug. Sorry.

xserver-xorg-input-evdev itself is fine, it just passes on the entire

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-18 Thread Paolo Filardi
I suggest one simple thing.
Move to another distribution if you don't like Mark/Canonnical's philosophy
GNU/Linux world is big enough to find the distribution that fit your needs.
Personally i don't find polite the way someone treated Mark (and at the same
time Mark treated the community) but i don't use Ubuntu because Mark is a nice
person.
I use Ubuntu because it rocks.
I will open gconf-editor, it's not a problem.

[Bug 460328] Re: Wrong keyboard settings when console-settings has multiple layouts

2010-03-18 Thread Martin Pitt
I just tested current lucid with multiple layouts:

  [us,de,de\tnodeadkeys]

gdm is meant to pick precisely one keyboard layout (the one you want to
use by default), so we should not and will not support lists in gdm.
(This is what I originally meant with multiple default layouts do not
make sense). So I close the gdm task.

What is actually wrong: If you pick a new layout in gdm (I chose UK),
I get the correct layout added to gconf

  [us,de,de\tnodeadkeys,gb]

but it does not become the default layout. That is a g-s-d bug.

[Bug 473604] Re: smb:// Desktop Icons fail to open with This file is of an unknown type error

2010-03-18 Thread Nikolaus Filus
I think this may be a duplicate of #322822 and/or #498011, only the error
message may have changed over gnome releases.
It may be related to upstreams https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=559065

I'm heavily affected by this bug since GNOME's migration to gio. Every
time I want to access a share a second time, it seems to have timed out
and I have to re-open it from nautilus places sidepane or re-mount
through disk-mounter applet.

Why is this marked low priority?

[Bug 540525] Re: Attempting to join an AIM buddy chat through Room Join always fails silently

2010-03-18 Thread Andrew Gorcester
Omer, I decided to split this report into two bugs: this one addresses
that Empathy fails silently and asks for an error message or that the
feature be disabled for AIM users (easy fix that I can nominate for
Lucid) and the other one addresses that Empathy doesn't support AIM
buddy chat in general (complicated fix that's probably not suitable for
a release only a month out). Should I have kept those two things
together after all?

[Bug 432814] Re: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty

2010-03-18 Thread Alex Dicks
 Alex Dicks wrote on 2010-03-16:
Perhaps the defaults for those keys could be changed to give the
  Jaunty behaviour back?

And then users who started using Ubuntu during the Karmic era will
file a bug that Lucid changed the defaults and broke their habits,
just as we are blaming Karmic here.

It's bizarre to keep behaviour that was only introduced by accident!

I've used Ubuntu on my Eee since Hardy, and the trackpad behaviour had
been the same until Karmic, since when I've had to find workarounds.

I've been establishing my habits for almost two years, yet you're
saying that they're less important than someone who's only been using
Ubuntu for a few months?

Hi Mark. I didn't take anything out of context, those were your words,
I just put quotes around them to emphasize how ridiculous they were. If
that's a problem maybe you shouldn't have said them.

As for personally attacking me, well I guess when you cannot win an
argument on merit, go for the jugular, right?

As for not informing the discussion I believe someone who I don't know
quoted me in comment #170, so there is something to chew on. Also I
seem to remember making post 133 also.

As for my competence, I just thought it was worth mentioning here that
your users are backlashing against your decision, but what the hell do I
know I just work on the core team of a distribution that listens and
adapts to direct input from its users. I am also not the one trying to
make the case for moving window controls to the left of the screen just
because I like it better that way.

Aggressive? FU. Wait, that's what you are telling your community.

Nice.

2010-03-18 Thread Alvaro Kuolas
Mark, I want to ask you: What is you vision about GnomeShell? It fit's
with what you are planing? Can we see blueprints of you plans?

At first I disliked the change, now I don't care. But I must say that I
hate half baked solutions... like the new GDM (you must admit it, the
default theme is horrid). I've seen lately (since Hardy) that Canonical
is pushing half made software in it's sane default, in the hope that
more eyeballs would lead to acceptance and better software.

Alpha and Beta testers doesn't make better software, programers do.

The success of most of the greatest software protects is because of
programing skills and good taste. That's the example of the Linux kernel
witch is based on Linus taste.
