[Bug 574247] Re: gnome panel fails to appear at login (ubuntu 10.04)

2010-05-11 Thread Chris Sharman
Is there anything I can try, or any additional information I can provide?
I'd really like to fix these symptoms - it's a pain to have to fix the panel
every login before I can use it.

Thanks

[Bug 520118] Re: thunar select freezes after using mouse to select folders (detailed view mode)

2010-05-11 Thread mcpish
Thanks for the info about pcmanfm2. Yes the version that is included in
the xubuntu repositories still has the same bug, you need to compile a
new version from source.

http://pcmanfm.sourceforge.net/

I managed to fix this problem by getting a copy of the source via git at
the project URL. I'm using version 0.9.5 and it does not have the
problem. This seems like a reasonable replacement for thunar.

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2010-05-11 Thread neph04
I have same problem and It does not help...

I'm working on HP 8510p notebook with attached external monitor (HDMI).

Ubuntu 10.04, last ATI drivers.
ATI CCC v2.12
$fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600
OpenGL version string: 3.2.9756 Compatibility Profile Context

After switching from NB panel to External LCD and disabling NB LCD was
everything ok. And then I resized external LCD from default resolution
to preffered (1280x900 1920x1080) and order of right top icons is
different.. I can not now reset wrong order (even with changing
resolution back to 1280x900)

[Bug 558627] Re: Power manager mistakenly thinks my battery power is critically low, and hibernates -- MSI Wind U100

2010-05-11 Thread Peter Curtis
Alfrenovsky

I have not been able to get your script to work [yet] for me but I
confirm I can see anomalous readings after both plugging in and removing
the power adapter on the output from upower -dump on the MSI Wind.

If this is a common BIOS problem why have we not seen it before. I have
been using two Winds under Hardy and Jaunty almost since they came out
without any sign of a problem. What has changed in the latest gnome-
power-manager? Did it use the charge level in the past? - if so that is
a valid solution as it has been proved over many years. Allowing a
settling period for what must start off as an analog measurement is also
sensible. It must not be too long as we do not want to fail to shut down
in time although unplugging with a critical battery is unlikely apart
from a fumble.

[Bug 558627] Re: Power manager mistakenly thinks my battery power is critically low, and hibernates -- MSI Wind U100

2010-05-11 Thread Peter Curtis
I have just checked the setup in Jaunty and I find that there are more
options under gconf-editor - apps - general including a key called
invalid_timeout which does exactly what we need - the description is
The invalid timeout is in ms for Power actions. Set longer if you get
a 'battery critical' messages when you unplug In Jaunty it is set to
500 ms. So where has it gone!

I also note that other keys such as can_hibernate and can_suspend are
missing and I recall some discussion over these in the past

2010-05-11 Thread ngc2997
From time to time, I am seeing this also 'in the middle' of a session,

happens randomly every now and then. Sometimes, the entire desktop is
affected (i.e., Ambiance theme is replaced by a default one), yesterday
only Nautilus content was affected while window decorations and panels
remained normal.

This bug affects me too.

Situation:

I can browse the shares but when trying to connect there is no password dialog,

But connection to another Samba Server 3.x works well - the password
dialog appears and mounting is okay.

[Bug 578717] [NEW] User Agent string says Debian/squeeze/sid () instead of Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid)

2010-05-11 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

In epiphany 2.30.2 in lucid, the user agent string is the following:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; fr-fr) AppleWebKit/531.2+ (KHTML, like
Gecko) Safari/531.2+ Debian/squeeze/sid () Epiphany/2.30.2

To be compared with the user agent string exposed by firefox:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; fr; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100423
Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Firefox/3.6.3

This makes detecting the version of Ubuntu at best difficult.

[Bug 508632] Re: [FFe] Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone

2010-05-11 Thread Oliver Joos
This change from a global Nautilus mode to a temporary text field is
hard to adopt. But I start to like the new look and behavior! Although
I'd expect Ctrl-L to *toggle*, namely to switch back to breadcrumb when
pressed while entering a Location.

@Beetroot: the flaky behavior you mention surprises me too. We normally loose
what we leave by pressing Esc. I think you should open a new bug report on this
one!
For me the Location... entry is now well placed in the Go menu. In German
this menu is called Go to and Go to Location... makes perfectly sense.
Remember it is not in the Preferences or View menu because it is not a global
Nautilus mode anymore. ;-)

Proposal: Keeping the finger for a longer time (e.g. 2 seconds) on the

The more I think of the touch interfaces the more unhandy I find it -

[Bug 568994] Re: Shutdown, from System Shutdown or via gnome applet not working consistently

2010-05-11 Thread John Rose
I'm getting this on clean install of Lucid (fully up to date) on a
laptop. Nothing happens on the screen after selecting logout, shutdown
or restart. Nothing on dmesg. Kernel is 2.6.32-22-generic. Due to its
intermittent nature, it's difficult to work out the exact circumstances
for the glitch. However, I suspect that if I don't use Open Office (even
though I have the Quickstarter applet loaded), then it works OK. As soon
as I use Open Office, then logout etc doesn't work. dmesg shows nothing.
Please let me know what diagnostics are required.

[Bug 558627] Re: Power manager mistakenly thinks my battery power is critically low, and hibernates -- MSI Wind U100

2010-05-11 Thread Alfrenovsky
Peter:

Forget my script. I didn't know that upower -d gives you the same
information. cooked.

I had the same strange remaining times with karmic just after
plug/unplug, I didn't report it as a bug before cause I had my
hibernation support broken I disable it and I didn't notice the problem.

I was testing to achieve a reasonable timeout after a pluging/unpluging
event, and the time needed are up to 15 seconds sometimes. So the wait
after reading is not a feasible solution.

The key is to ignore the very high rates. But the rates may vary in different
notebooks.
The batteries are supposed to be designed to last some hours.
I think we can ignore the rates that will lead the design capacity to drain
in less than 10 minutes.
In my case the desing capacity is 57720 mWh so I whould ignore 346320mW or up
(My strange readings are all about 70mW)
and its far from my standard real rates 3 in charging and 5000 to 13000
discharging.

does the arbitrary drain in less than 10 minutes fits to all?

[Bug 575483] Re: Profile picture dialog doesn't work

2010-05-11 Thread David Barth
From the description, it seems to be a bug in the about-me dialog, which is a
gnome-control-center applet.
Keeping it as a whishlist on the me menu, and adding gnome-control-center to
track the rest of the bug.

[Bug 451282] Re: display is fully dimmed after resume from suspend

2010-05-11 Thread Patrick Gillespie
Adding the following, as per Pauls instructions, seems to have worked on
my system (as far as suspend goes):

brt=`cat /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness`
abrt=`cat /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness`
if [ $brt != $abrt ]; then
echo $abrt /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
fi

I notice that my function keys (for brightness) no longer work. When I
use them, the brightness slider appears, but I can't adjust the
brightness of the screen. I'm not sure this is related...

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2010-05-11 Thread John Haitas
I experienced this bug again yesterday with the kernel upgrade.

In Virtualbox - in Fullscreen mode the whole time:
Start with a fresh install of Lucid
Build Virtualbox Guest Additions
Upgraded to kernel version 2.6.32-22-generic
Reboot
rebuild Virtualbox Guest Additions
Reboot
Icons lose their positions

Perhaps this would be reproducible toggling the screen resolution
between 1280x800 and 800x600 - which is what effectively happened
between reboots...

[Bug 553162] Re: Unset $LANGUAGES if the user picks a different locale in gdm, so that language-selector and gdm stop disagreeing

2010-05-11 Thread Fumihito YOSHIDA
This bug has yet another affection of i18n breakage,

 - GDM read ~/.dmrc 's Language value and set LANG/LANGUAGEenvironment
varibale.
 - ~/.dmrc has Language=(langname).utf8 form by language-selector in some
cases.
(such as Lucid clean install without no touch boot. after install,
~/.dmrc has .utf8 values)
 - So, LANG/LANGUAGE environment varibales sets Language=(langname).utf8 by
GDM.

But, LANG/LANGUAGE environment varibales expected
'LANG=(langname).UTF-8' style, not (langname).utf8.

This LANG/LANGUAGE settings behavior brakes some i18n codepages related
applications (such as xarchiver, file-roller with archiver that has
codepage handling).

We must recover(or mitigate) dmrc's Language value too.

Unfortunately this is my workstation and I can not test on it.
I just locked drivers on xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.9.1 version and I'm not
planning to upgrade to lucid.

I'll mark this bug as duplicated to 462349 and 458545 which have status fix

Don't know if this is the appropriate action because I don't plan to test this
fix, but I'll mark it as fix relased

[Bug 256478] Re: Support contact grouping (metacontacts)

2010-05-11 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Considering the bug has been open for just short of two years, and has
at best a Wishlist state. The upstream report for this is nearly three
years old. Yet somehow this has still been selected as the default
client for Ubuntu. As others have pointed out this is a fairly standard
feature of multi-network chat clients.

Couple this with the apparent complete lack of support for keyboard
binds and I fail to see how this client was remotely ready to be
selected as the default chat client. Especially in an LTS release. I'd
say the noise is needed.

[Bug 123460] Re: Rhythmbox:Error while saving song information:Internal GStreamer problem

2010-05-11 Thread Hugo Hidalgo
Same problem here as Voltaire with Ubuntu 10.04 and Rhythmbox 0.12.8.

It seemed frozen for a while, but after a long delay it allowed me to
close the error message window and then after another long delay another
one appeared (again frozen for a while and then let me close the window
and so on). After about 20 minutes it finished the process and I
unmarked the Watch my library for new files option in the preferences.
I logged out, and restarted rhythmbox. This time was really frozen. I
erased the file ~/.local/share/rhythmbox/rhythmdb.xml as suggested by
Voltaire and restarted the program. Added all my libraries again and
closed. Logged out and logged in and restarted rhythmbox. I seems to be
working fine now (but of course it won't look for new songs).

[Bug 451282] Re: display is fully dimmed after resume from suspend

2010-05-11 Thread pauls
Gabe, is it possible to find out the source code that sets the values
for brightness and actual_brightness and get them to agree after boot
up?

It certainly would be better to try to fix it at the upstream source.

My limited knowledge of /sys/ directory is that it's mostly created by
kernel drivers .. is there a way to get one of the kernel coders to just
look at this bug and see if it could be in the kernel code? If so, then
I'm sure linus would appreciate getting a bug filed.

If you decide to add a fix to /etc/rc.local (or some other script), one
problem is that each different graphic card / driver seems to create the
/sys/../brightness and /sys/../actual_brightness in different locations.
To meet this issue, any script would have to search /sys/ first and then
test and assign the appropriate values.

Keep in mind that doing this on boot wastes a bit of boot time
(milliseconds), but that contradicts one of the goals of ubuntu to cut
current boot times in half.

regards,

Re: [Bug 553162] Re: Unset $LANGUAGES if the user picks a different locale in gdm, so that language-selector and gdm stop disagreeing

2010-05-11 Thread Martin Pitt
Fumihito YOSHIDA [2010-05-11 12:51 -]:
 But, LANG/LANGUAGE environment varibales expected
 'LANG=(langname).UTF-8' style, not (langname).utf8.

That's not true. .utf8 is the canonical name now, and .UTF-8 is an
alias.

This LANG/LANGUAGE settings behavior brakes some i18n codepages related
applications (such as xarchiver, file-roller with archiver that has
 codepage handling).

These would be bugs in those applications then, not gdm.

Thanks!

[Bug 390816] Re: external monitor output is switched off when closing the laptop-lid when gnome-power-manager is set to blank screen on closing

2010-05-11 Thread Mark W
The gconf thing, whilst very hacky, did the trick for me. seems I'm having to
use it a lot lately :(
I now have a Do Nothing in the menu. Yay! Why wasn't it the default?

@Nicolo, the closed screen should still blank, the hardware switch is
(usually? :) wired to disable at least the backlight (which is the
screen's main power drain). In some notebooks you can engage your lid-
close switch without actually closing the screen and see what happens.
But I suppose a per monitor software solution would be the best
solution.. Klunky to implement. Perhaps a ignore non-software power
saving events for this monitor under Monitors?

Making gnome easier to use for newbies shouldn't come at the expense of
flexibility for power users.. A little Borg mentality is slipping
though. :(

We could possibly compile a list of all these little gconf gems for
power users and fixes for the other little regressions that have
popped up for the sake of newbie proofing, and maybe put them in a big
script with a check-box during installation that says If I wanted to be
told what I'm allowed to do with my computer, I'd be using
Microsoft/Apple/Sony/Nintendo/Oracle software!

[Insert 'gconf + Ubuntu/Gnome's users==idiots Policy should be buried
in the same grave as Micro$oft' rant here]

[Bug 578822] [NEW] [regression-release] Misleading options when handling pendrives + cannot umount anymore.

2010-05-11 Thread Leo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When the user right-clicks on a pendrive at the Desktop, they are given two
options:
Eject
Safely Remove

It is not at all clear to the newbie what these are doing and why they
would be different at all.

Besides, for the experienced user, the simple Unmount option no longer
exists.

Further, and the partition being Ejected or Safely Removed are misleading
actions:
 - Ubuntu won't eject my USB, will it?
 - If the user regrets later on and wants to reopen the pendrive, they can't.
With Eject it even desappears from /dev, and with Safely Remove you still get
/dev/sdn but not /dev/sdnx

[Bug 578748] Re: Remove notification icon redundancy in Ubuntu 10.04

After installing empathy again can you try to logout and login again and
then start empathy and check if it appears in the notification area? or
in empathy preferences in notifications tab there is an option to
disable this icon.

[Bug 451282] Re: display is fully dimmed after resume from suspend

2010-05-11 Thread Gabe Gorelick
I really don't know anything about the code, but if you claim the
correct place to fix this is in the kernel then I recommend filing a bug
upstream, if one hasn't already been filed. Also make sure you test this
on the mainline kernel to make sure it's not caused by an Ubuntu patch.

[Bug 578748] Re: Remove notification icon redundancy in Ubuntu 10.04

2010-05-11 Thread Brian Curtis
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

In this case a screenshot of the issue would help greatly as well. This
may in fact be an indicator applet issue and not an empathy one.
