[Bug 635517] [NEW] Can't browse network

2010-09-11 Thread Gil Seward
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

g...@ubnb:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu maverick (development branch)
Release:10.10
---
gvfsd-smb-browse ID 1870

Could not display network:///.
Error: DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the
message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or
the network connection was broken.
Please select another viewer and try again.

Networking has been broken in Ubuntu for at least a couple of years, in the
sense that clicking on the Network item in Nautilus did not open up the
network. It was possible to somewhat fix this by editing smb.conf, but it was
quirky, and you could frequently see only Windows computers, not other Linux
computers..
In the early Alpha versions of 10.10 this was entirely fixed, Network opened up
instantly, all I would have to edit was the workgroup name and even that was
not really required. I just downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 Beta [and a couple of later
daily builds] and now it is even more broken, click on network and it hangs for
a couple of minutes and gives a message that the wrong application is being
used. BTW I have installed Samba. Also if I go to System/Administration/Network
Tools, the tools are all broken, I can't even ping a computer that I know the
ip address of. I can ping that computer from Terminal, no problem.
So today I reinstalled the August 25 Daily build, and was ecstatic to see how
nicely and instantly the network opened up,[several windows machines and two
Ubuntu machines] but alas after I updated Ubuntu it was broken again.
I had just talked a small business client of mine into letting me put Ubuntu on
two of his computers, but now I will have to put that on hold until this is
fixed, as access to the network is essential to him.
Will someone PLEASE fix this.
Thanks
Gil Seward

[Bug 635569] [NEW] Totem can play a MPEG4 in MKV, but not in AVI

2010-09-11 Thread YannUbuntu
Public bug reported:

I recorded a video in GUVCVideo, choosing :

[Bug 209532] Re: Accessibility keyboard settings get lost

2010-09-11 Thread davidr
josh,

You are correct. As the originator of a bug report concerning ubuntu
remembering settings and another re my above post, the two were combined
by the team(?) a long time ago. As this thread is combined with other
duplicates, I assume(d) the developers saw them as the same 'bug to be
fixed'. IMHO, it shouldn't be a feature request - just part of the
'modifier key' package. Which, as I say, was combined some releases ago,
with remembering settings.

I no longer have a record of the bug report, unfortunately.

I don't think the developers will be happy to start changing the package
yet again. Release 7 onward had problems and it still is not fixed ...

I'll make a Feature request but I still bring people's attention again
to what a modifier key traditionally has been. (bad English).

(Please excuse any bad expression)

David

[Bug 635574] [NEW] screen brightness adjustment misses levels

2010-09-11 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Maverick only supplies 4 brightness increments on my PC, although I have
8 possible increments - my LCD supports the following levels:

$ cat /proc/acpi/video/VID/LCD/brightness
levels: 12 24 36 48 60 72 84 100
current: 72

For instance, when the screen is set to maximum (100), pressing the
brightness down keys (FN-down arrow) makes the brightness go to 72, then
48, then 24, then 12. Pressing up from here makes the brightness go to
36, then 60, then 84, then 100.

I'm currently running a 2.6.36-rc3 kernel, but the problem also exists
in the stock Maverick 2.6.35 kernel.

[Bug 635668] [NEW] Evolution asks whether to mark messages unread in subfolders, too - but there are no subfolders!

2010-09-11 Thread Zordid
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Whenever I use mark all messages as read on a folder, the latest
version of Evolution asks whether to do this operation on subfolders,
too. Well, that would be nice - if there WERE subfolders. It's rather
annoying to always get that stupid dialog; I know what I want to do -
and the question would be reasonable if there were any subfolders.

But please: if there are no subfolders anyway: don't ask!
Thanks! :-)

[Bug 566572] Re: empathy doesn't appear to reconnect after VPN disconnection

2010-09-11 Thread Markus
I have the same problem too, but no need for a VPN:
- Start Empathy (I have a gtalk account)
- Confirm that you are online (Two green dots in the status bar, one for
empathy and one in the new 10.4 panel thingy)
- Disconnect from the network
- Verify that your network is gone (for example browsing does no longer works)
- Observe that the two status icons are still green (Connected with no network
???)
- Click on the green Empathy icon - Contact list shows
- Double Click on a contact shown as online - Chat window shows
- Chat - Chatting seems to work
- Connect to network again - Empathy shows 'Disconnected' - 'Connected' in the
chat window

- It looks to me like Empathy does not get it that it looses the
network when the network goes, only when it reconnects

[Bug 572176] Re: sound not working on virtual machine

2010-09-11 Thread David Ayers
I'm not sure that this bug is correctly associated with gst0.10-python.

I've got a Lucid i386 Host (this system came pre-installed with Feisty I
believe and still has some apps / configurations that I can't easily
reinstall under x64, so I've been upgrading since.)

I've got libvirt/virt-manager installed. As guests have a variety of
systems available but I suppose the easiest to deal with is another
Lucid i386 installation, (this one fresh from a release image and
updated to current packages).

Sound is working fine on the host. I've configured an ac97 sound card
(but also tested es1370) in the VM. The volume control in the VM seems
to indicate that that it recognizes the virtual card. But sound is not
being passed through.

I will run the apport-collect -p alsa-base 572176 for the VM, but I
assume that this may be a KVM/libvirt issue more that an gstreamer
issue.

[Bug 240916] Re: can't configure display resolution (monitor, graphics card) manually in gui

2010-09-11 Thread tz
I had forgotten about this yet another thing Ubuntu refuses to even
provide a workaround much less fix.

Some quick notes - yes I want this fixed too (actually I've abandoned
Ubuntu - they will ruin notifications, but not put a refresh in the
network manager which is similarly broken, nor fix it - more of the
automatic is broken but we won't give you a manual option theory).

First, it isn't just monitors. My original problem was a laptop with a
VIA chipset. The original driver had a few problems (mainly wiht 3d),
but was usable (E-F). G or H broke it and removed the manual
configuration. The VIA driver locked up constantly (no, they never
fixed that), but I could use the default minimal VESA, but it was
800x600 although the bios and everything else said the screen was
1024x768. But now there was no way to tell X even to use a plain VESA
mode of 1024x768 with what amounted to standard VESA monitor timings.
There is no detection involved.

Worse, it wasn't just removed from the distribution disk, it was removed
from the repositories. If I wanted it, I would have to track down the
old source and recompile from scratch.

It isn't a big, complex job looking into strange driver code and
hardware, it is just putting back one tiny freaking program into the
repositories if not the main distro.

Right now I can't tell it that my monitor is a plain, vanilla, standard
VESA with resolution of 1024x768.

VESA is not some complex or quirky hardware, it is a freaking standard!
And Ubuntu doesn't support it.

It isn't a high priority because their policy seems never to fix
severely broken automatic configuration - either setup like this or
ongoing like network-manager (they have time for vanity UI changes
though), but at the same time rip out all the manual configuration so if
your hardware is affected there is no way for you to fix it.

I'm in the process of switching to Fedora (13) - it seems to be more
stable, and although not everything is fixed, it has a large package
library and so far they seem to be more friendly to older hardware.

[Bug 635712] [NEW] Nautilus : the new default thumbnails size wastes screen space with not other advantage

2010-09-11 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Hi !

This is a request for changing the default value
schemas/apps/nautilus/thumbnail_size from 64 (new default value in the
current gnome, in Maverick) back to 96 (former value in Lucid for
instance).

Indeed : this new value makes the thumbnails smaller, but the grid is
still as wide as it used to, which makes the space between icons huge
while bringing less information than before.

Is it possible to set this default value back to 96 ? ... or to fix the
excessive spacing ?

Cheers !

[Bug 259385] Re: [i845] Intrepid Compiz freezes on login for i845

2010-09-11 Thread jerrylamos
i845G and i830 run all ordinary applications, office, internet, internet
video, ... without Compiz.

Blacklisting Compiz for them is just fine with me, since I usually check
on install and set System Preferences Appearance Visual Effects None
anyway.

Of course I'm interested in running applications full screen so I don't
have any interest in desktop eye candy anyway. I do note from comments
on the forum others are interested in desktop eye candy.

By the way, my i845G and i830 are running Mavierick Beta with
i915.modeset=1, KMS active, O.K. not that I do anything with KMS or
switching modes. See bug #541492.

Re: [Bug 555736] Re: Lucid rhythmbox causes Firefly to die on Netgear NAS

2010-09-11 Thread pvanderploeg
@Joe Castellano Old situation: Rhythmbox on laptop with desktop Ubuntu
10.04.1, upgraded from 10.04, and mt-daapd on (Virtual) server running
Ubuntu server 8.04.3. I did nothing special to Rhythmbox. Installed 10.04.
in may, ran into the problem of Rhythmbox crashing the mt-daapd server on
8.04.3 server. Waited until 10.04.1 was released, upgraded the laptop from
10.04 to 10.04.1 and noticed that the problem with mt-daapd still existed.
Then in the last week of august I upgraded (dist upgrade) the 8.04.3 server
to the then current 10.04(01) server. Possibly that changed the mt-daapd
version too, I dont know. What I do know is that Rhythmbox on 10.04.1 does
not crash the mt-daapd anymore.

Regards
Pieter

2010/9/11 Joze Castellano joze...@gmail.com

Im using a mt-daap ARM version for Etrayz (using a gentoo distro)

I updated my PPAs List to point to the development PPA of RhythmBox (0.13.1
 currently)
Where its supposed to be a fix for these ... but it still crash.

 What exactly did u do?

Confirmed in Lucid 10.04.1 with GNOME Terminal 2.29.6 and compiz 0.8.4.
When window is unmaximized, swtiching between tabs is instant. When
window is maximized, there is a short, but discernable, delay switching
tabs. Running proprietary NVidia drivers as installed by jockey on
NVidia GeForce 9600 GT with full compiz effects.

[Bug 396226] Re: GDM logs out after some minutes of typing on the keyboard

2010-09-11 Thread Maxim Levitsky
Actually this workaround doesn't work on my desktop for some strange reason.
X starts on vt1, of course hangs due to fight with plymouth,
The /var/run/gdm/firstserver.stamp exists, and I tested that x doesn't crash
first time or so.
Removing it makes X start on vt7, on next boot everything is back
/var/run is mounted as tmpfs, and I did check that it doesn't contain
/var/run/gdm/firstserver.stamp if booted into 'single' mode

works with full screen 1024x768 in both screens, but I can't set an
independent 1440x900 in the HP monitor at the same time as having

[Bug 635937] [NEW] SRU request. Evolution on 10.04 LTS only supports SHA1 for the next 3 years. SHA2 would be nice.

2010-09-11 Thread Nathaniel Homier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

In the title I mean SRU not SRA.

For the next 3 years Ubuntu 10.04 LTS will only be able to support the
SHA1 cipher. Thats 3 long years of using a broken and useless cipher.
What are the options for those who require an LTS, there are no options.
Upgrading to a non-LTS release defeats the purpose of using an LTS. I
am very aware that hell would freeze over before this SRU request would
be accepted. It's too bad that the SHA1 patch came too late for 10.04.
I don't how easy an attack against SHA1 would be, would it be acceptable
to wait 3 years if attacks against SHA1 are still hard enough as to not
worry about it?

If SHA1 attacks are trivial, then would Ubuntu please consider an SRU.

[Bug 635953] [NEW] Ctrl-C while editing file names won't copy selected text - but the whole file!

2010-09-11 Thread Zordid
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When trying to rename files and taking parts of other file's names, I
usually select the other file, press F2, select part (or all) of this
file's name and press Ctrl-C. Now, when I want to use the copied text
snippet, I select another file, press F2 again and do Ctrl-V - but the
bug now is: Nautilus did NOT copy the selected text from the edit box
into the clipboard, but instead the reference to the file - and Ctrl-V
leads to duplication of the complete file!!

I tried using the context menu: pressing F2 for rename, select part of a
file's name, now go to the right mouse-button context menu and select
Copy there - this works!!

So: while editing file names, Ctrl-C behaves differently from context-
menu's Copy command in the same situation!

== Nautilus should NOT put the reference to a file into the clipboard
on Ctrl-C if one is editing the filename!

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 396226] Re: GDM logs out after some minutes of typing on the keyboard

2010-09-11 Thread Maxim Levitsky
Boy, how ugly things could get.
I was wrong about X not crashing. It indeed crashes once.
I have here a custom built from latest git trees x server, and it is of course
ubuntu hack free...

So it turns out that plymouth (or whatever the name is) makes X crash, and
ubuntu xserver carries a patch (for very long time I'll say, because its second
time I face this, I just forgot), that workarounds that problem
(121_only_switch_vt_when_active.diff)

I understand carrying patches when you choose stable version and cherry
picked changes from latest tree, or you put a patch and soon submit it,
but this is ridiculous.

Btw, that 'seamless' boot patches (-bg none) aren't upstream too, and
intel driver changed so much that it easier to study the whole thing
that to try and apply it

Folks, really send patches upstream, its for the common good.

[Bug 318517] Re: Word wrapping is not respecting indentation

2010-09-11 Thread drx
There is a gedit-plugin available that does great things with tabstops and
indets, called elastic tabstops, see
http://nickgravgaard.com/elastictabstops/

It does what i asked for and many things more, but it is terribly slow.
A few kilobytes of code will slow the editor down to be almost unusable.
But maybe it is a good thing to build upon it.

[Bug 633292] Re: Lights Off game doesn't work

2010-09-11 Thread Justin Blanchard
This doesn't seem to be the bug Pedro Villavicencio pointed out. I think
it's a gobject introspection problem: seed can't find
GLib.main_context_iteration, so it can't run the function that
initializes the light buttons. Workaround: comment out line 103 of
/usr/share/gnome-games/lightsoff/Board.js. (Edit the file as root and
put // at the beginning of the line. Or delete the line...) Lightsoff
works fine if you do that.
