[Bug 625239] Re: X starts on wrong tty because gdm starts before nvidia driver is ready

2010-09-14 Thread Steve Langasek
has anyone reproduced this nvidia+gdm crash on maverick? Marking
incomplete for maverick pending confirmation.

** Description changed:

+ This bug has been repurposed based on the comments beginning at #15.
+ The original submitter's bug was a duplicate of bug #626723.

- After the system boots and the plymouth screen disappears and X starts up on
tty1 or tty2, if I press the enter key in a few minutes X shuts down and starts
again. In the session of X that comes up after this, the problem doesn't occur.
-
- The problem happens when gdm starts X and X crashes silently. gdm
- restarts X but X starts on tty1(2) as getty hasn't yet started and it
- isn't the first X start. When getty does start on tty1 it eventually
- interferes with X by setting ISIG on the tty.
-
- In the cases discussed here, the computer systems are very fast and gdm
- is starting X before the nvidia kernel module is ready to run.
-
- NOTE WELL--the original reporter had the problem that his system was starting
on tty7 and others were discussing tty1 starts here as well. At comment 30
- the problem was split with regard to tty1/tty7 starts and tty7 discussion
moved to #626723. See original description below for his original report.
+ When booting certain systems with fast disks, gdm will start up and
+ attempt to launch X before the nvidia kernel driver has fully
+ initialized. This results in gdm restarting X again, without the 'vt7'
+ argument, which may cause X's first-available-VT autoselection to pick a
+ VT between 1 and 6 because the getty jobs have not all yet started.
+ Ultimately this leads to X crashing when pressing certain keys (such as
+ Enter or '2') because the tty has been set into a mode by getty that X
+ is not prepared to handle.

udev detects that the drive is capable of writing BD-R and BD-RE (i. e.

[Bug 630976] Re: Error when attempting to transfer music to iPhone 4

2010-09-14 Thread Morgan GERMAIN
I heard that it was not possible to transfer music to iPhone 4 with
Lucid Lynx.

For me, i have not seen this crash. In rhythmbox, you can drag drop
music to your iphone, synchronization starts but your iPhone remains
empty.

It is not a rhythmbox problem, it is a known limitation of
libimobiledevice.

On www.libimobiledevice.org, you can see that news

23.08.2010: First attempt at iOS 4 music synchronization with an iPhone
4 has succeeded. The new hash algorythm is reversed. Some time will pass
though to clean it up and make iPhone 4 and iPad owners happy again.

In Ubuntu 10.10, libimobiledevice version is 1.0.1, so we can never have
it work, but if we could have 1.0.2, music sync will work with all iOS
versions. iPhone 4 case seems to be different.

Who should be able to test libimobiledevice-1.0.2 with an iPhone 4 to
see if it make sense to upgrade maverick to 1.0.2 ?

[Bug 293535] Re: CPU always 100% CPU

2010-09-14 Thread Michael Haggerty
I had similar symptoms under lucid while trying to change my window
manager to sawfish--one CPU pegged at 100%, with top showing gconfd-2
using up about 20% and Xorg about 15%. It turns out that the problem
was caused by metacity trying to start, realizing that another window
manager was running, outputting and error, then being RESTARTED very
quickly. top didn't list metacity as the culprit because each
metacity process was dying so quickly that it didn't show up in the
statistics. It was gnome-session that was restarting metacity
endlessly, so I suggest that this is a bug in gnome-session (it should
somehow give up after a while, and probably show an error dialog).

I described the solution for my problem (which doesn't necessarily apply
to this bug) in bug #453115.

[Bug 630976] Re: Error when attempting to transfer music to iPhone 4

2010-09-14 Thread Morgan GERMAIN
S'cuse me, I was wrong. This topic says that versions 1.0.2 maybe work
but NOT the 1.0.2

http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=7t=54306#p318458

iPhone 3G/3GS with iOS 3.x and 4.x works well but not iPhone 4. We
should use latest libimobiledevice's sources to see if it can be used in
ubuntu 10.10 or later in 11.04.

If it is to late for 10.10 release, then i'm sure that Paul McEnery will
integrate it in its PPA :

[Bug 637892] [NEW] IRC contact list missing since last update

2010-09-14 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Since I updated empathy yesterday on Maverick (I don't know if I missed
any updates in-between, the one before was a few days old) the IRC
contact list has disappeared. In the Conversation menu it is enabled.
In fact, when I updated yesterday, it disappeared when I reconnected to
a channel, whereas it stayed visible for a channel to which I didn't
loose connection. Today it is missing for all channels.

No doesn't happen in Lucid for me, fresh install. Yelp very slow though,
grays out unresponsive frequently, enough for me to ignore it now and
just use man pages from a terminal or Google if I want to know howto

2010-09-14 Thread neutronenspalter
Still the same with Lucid:

- newly added time server are only saved when checked
- unchecked server not originally in the list are deleted the next time
time-admin is started

But I don't experience crashes any more!

[Bug 513058] Re: Evince does not print PDF to HP LaserJet 3380

2010-09-14 Thread axx
I can confirm this behaviour on a 400 KB pdf (PDF-1.5) file created by Adobe
InDesign CS5 (7.0) with Evince 2.3.30 using libspectre (0.2.3) and with an HP
OfficeJet J6400 series, with HPLip 3.10.2.
This is Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04, 2.6.32-24-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 20
14:24:04 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux.

Phew ok, enough of the version numbers.

Basically, same issue as the original poster, Evince document viewer
says doesn't print the pdf file, it sends it to the print queue but
nothing happens, and when one tries to print it a second time, the
printer status is set to bad pattern.

If you need more info I'll be happy to provide it.

Thanks for your help.

I can confirm this for Lucid. A possible workaround is to create a dummy

[Bug 548546] Re: nautilus not removing device after unmount

2010-09-14 Thread Ilja Sekler
I'm not quite sure about the steps prior to unmounting the device in
respect to information you request. 'gvfs-mount -li' and 'udisks --dump'
don't report a loop device after

1. mkdir /tmp/tmpmount
2. sudo mount -o loop ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso /tmp/tmpmount/
3. sudo umount /tmp/tmpmount

They do falsely report a loop device after a run of usb-creator though,
while 'losetup -a' clearly indicated that there is none. This is the
relevant part of 'udisks --dump' with usb-creator running:

Re: [Bug 240599] Re: Doesn't install GConf keys

2010-09-14 Thread Scott Severance
Yes, this happens in Lucid. However, I don't agree that this is a Yelp
bug. The .deb should make GConf entries where appropriate. Users
shouldn't have to read help in order to take advantage of the GConf
entries, especially since in every other program I know of, GConf
stuff isn't document in the Yelp help. It's documented through the
GConf schema.

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-09-14 Thread Stuart Bishop
I see this sort of effect regularly on boot. The reliable work around
for me is to log out and log in again. All the startup applications are
in cache and the race conditions are not triggered. It seems it happens
when the panel is a little slower than normal loading, and startup
applications and applets are making use of its resources before it is
fully initialized - the slower your disks and the more startup
applications you have the more likely you are to see the problem.

[Bug 227956] Re: Customising other aspects of the desktop link works extremely slowly

2010-09-14 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
** Description changed:

- Ubuntu 8.04, all updates installed; Ubuntu 8.10, all updates installed
+ Ubuntu 8.04; Ubuntu 8.10; Ubuntu Maverick beta

  1. Open Ubuntu Help.
- 2. Click Customising your Desktop.
+ 2. Click Customising your Desktop (in 8.04 or 8.10) or Customizing your
computer (in Maverick).
  3. Click Customising other aspects of the desktop.

What should happen: The link takes you to a page near-instantly, i.e.
  within 1 second.

  What actually happens:
  * With Ubuntu 8.04 on a Toshiba Satellite SA-50, the page takes 14 seconds to
appear.
  * With Ubuntu 8.10 on a MacBook early 2008, the page takes 7 seconds to
appear.
- Either way, by the time it appears you've long since given up and closed the
help or gone somewhere else.
+ * With Ubuntu Maverick beta on a MacBook early 2008, the page takes 6.5
seconds to appear.
+
+ By the time it appears you've long since given up and closed the help or
+ gone somewhere else.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

After todays updates, my background won't load like if the gnome startup
procedure hangs. Gnome also tries to start multible nautilus, but fails
in segmentation faults.

My dmesg gets spammed with errors like:

It is easy to reproduce the bug, by opening nautilus followed by

I am quite sure this bug was introduced with nautilus 1:2.31.92-0ubuntu1.

The bug is present with and without compiz.

[Bug 638018] [NEW] gnome-system-log aborts when filter are applied to big log files

2010-09-14 Thread Oliver Joos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

I can reproduce a crash of gnome-system-log 2.30.0-0ubuntu1 (Lucid):

1. start gnome-system-log and it shows (a quite big) /var/log/messages
2. activate a simple user-defined filter, e.g. to match EE (without the
quotes)
3. enable Show matches only
= it aborts:

../~$ gnome-system-log

(gnome-system-log:4880): Gtk-WARNING **:
/build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.20.1/gtk/gtktextbtree.c:4019: byte index off the
end of the line

Gtk-ERROR **: Byte index 227444 is off the end of the line
aborting...
Aborted
../~$

If I do this with /var/log/lpr or other small log files, it works as
expected. With big files like messages or syslog it crashes. My
/var/log/message is 2.6 MByte.

[Bug 591561] Re: Gnome panel got one line bottom when login as Thai language.

2010-09-14 Thread David Planella
As asked on the upstream bug, could someone using a Thai desktop test it
with another theme? The suggestion is to use Clearlooks.

Thanks!

[Bug 637994] Re: Nautilus segmentation fault in libcairo.so.2

2010-09-14 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
