[Bug 665793] [NEW] network manager applet notification position is incorrect
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel When network manager connects to my wifi ('dlink'), it shows a notification that it has connected but this isn't positioned right. I've seen this problem with not just 10.04 but a few releases earlier as well. If I hover my mouse on it, it disappears and reappears once I move it away. [Bug 665806] [NEW] false battery alarm with realtime app running (jackd)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager When I have the JACK daemon running with realtime priority on this MSI Wind U100 laptop and pull out the wall power, the system tells me that the battery is low and enters hibernation. The battery is full, though. If JACK is not active, nothing happens (just the battery symbol goes gray, which is irritating, but intended, I guess). This forced hibernation is particulary annoying as JACK really does not like going to sleep; it cannot be killed by an ordinary user after resume (meaning: stop it via the button in qjackctl); pkill -9 jackd is needed. But that's another bug in the JACK audio server that one could live with, wouldn't the system -- and I suspect it's called gnome-power- manager here -- force a suspend to disk. I'll check again if it's really just an issue when JACK has realtime priority, after posting this initial report (don't wanna loose it as collateral damage). Even if it is, I suspect some nasty race condition that could occur any time, but is helped by the scheduling schism introduced by JACK. [Bug 629258] Re: Battery life estimation never comes around
I have the same issue in Meerkat (2.6.35-22-server, x86_64). Confirming that it worked (i.e. did not have the issue) in Lucid. Same computer. Same hardware. Same architecture (x86_64). Only change done was a 'clean install' from Lucid to Meerkat with all updates and upgrades that it asked for. Also confirming that this bug remains no matter how long the laptop is ON. 4 hrs - 6 hours, may be more (i.e. it does not go away in 10 min as some threads suggest). Also this remains the same whether it is a clean startup (from power-down) or a wakeup from a suspended state. Guys, pls. don't mark this (or similar bugs) as invalid. That will be the biggest disservice to the loyal users of Ubuntu Linux. I understand and respect that some of you guys (developers testers) might not be able to see/reproduce the problem. That's OK. But pls. don't disrespect fellow users and community members by saying/marking them as invalid. (I saw in some threads, that's why I persistently request). Snapshot attached. Tell me anything more you need. I will provide to the best I can. #uname -a - Linux 2.6.35-22-server #35-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 22:02:33 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux gnome-power-manager version - Version: 2.32.0-0ubuntu1 ** Attachment added: snap.jpg https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-notes/+bug/629258/+attachment/1709021/+files/snap.jpg -- Battery life estimation never comes around https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/629258 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 665806] Re: false battery alarm with realtime app running (jackd)
OK, scrap the thing about JACK. It must have been luck before, but now I was able to get the forced hibernation without jackd running at all. The rather infurinating thing is that I get dialog that tells about the fact and offers OK and Cancel buttons... which have no effect on the action being taken. It might be nice if Cancel being pressed withing some time frame would cancel the hibernation process. I even triggered multiple hibernations in a row (unplug, plug, unplug). Causing the laptop to go to sleep again right after waking up. Anyhow: When unplugging from wall power, I get this notification blended onto the desktop about battery state ... and it tells me about 0:02 of battery runtime, 99% .. which somewhat contradicts the information when clicking on the battery applet, there I get 99%, OK, but also the much more sensible estimated runtime of 1:59 or so. Still, this seems to be a timing issue, perhaps the ACPI information doesn't change atomically, or there is just an error in the runtime calculation using an outdated value of whatnot. I suspect, that this might be worked around by waiting some seconds and then recomputing the remaining runtime -- and only triggering the emergency if the situation is confirmed. I do wonder though, if nobody else can reproduce this. Is the MSI Wind U100 BIOS just broken? I'm remined of the strange issues with the webcam and USB, or the Bluetooth/WLAN switch not working correctly by chance (gladly, it works in the Maverick install, as opposed to the live system from USB). -- false battery alarm with realtime app running (jackd) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/665806 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Oh, and I see this issue as rather more serious on observing that I cannot turn off this behaviour. I can only choose between shutdown/standby/hibernate. Nothing like nothing or inform/ask user. Especially since this is not my machine ... so I have to instruct the user to only unplug the wall power when the machine is not running. -- false battery alarm with realtime app running (jackd) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/665806 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

About the same problem here. Same messages in the logs; however, nothing logged when gdm crashes. Which happens after some minutes of inactivity or reliably after waking my Thinkpad from suspend. [Bug 658069] Re: Empty files written over gvfs by some editors
Hi! I have a different problem with my recently updated Ubuntu 10.10 64Bit (intel). If I open a file with geany on the network, make it shorter, and save it, the saved file is not actually shortned (keeps some of the text at the end). Gedit seems unaffected by the problem. I also see that Geany is very slow in saving network files. I wonder if this problem depends on the same cause. [Bug 629258] Re: Battery life estimation never comes around
Yes, it's right. This problem exists and many people (myself included) can confirm it. But there are here a few descriptions of distinct problems. I think that the problem that was reported here does NOT have anything to do with any physical incapacity to check the battery level. The problem is that when one clicks in the gnome-power-manager icon the tool tip says simply Laptop battery (estimating...). But after clicking in Laptop battery a window appears with several information regarding the battery. There, it is possible to see the correct level of the battery. So, I think that any problem where the gnome-power-manager is not able to check the battery level at all is not the same bug. @João Gomes: you are absolutely right. ;) This is a bug about the forever estimating state of battery applet indicator. [Bug 629258] Re: Battery life estimation never comes around
João, I have the same situation you describe on my Dell Mini 9. So in my opinion, there are currently two issues: * g-p-m has no estimates about the remaining battery *time*. This seems to be because of lacking ACPI information, if I understood it correctly. This could be solved by calculating these estimates in g-p-m, but this is probably not trivial. * The second issue is how the battery indicator deals with this situation. Currently, it simply shows “estimating…” forever, but never comes around with estimated values. I think if it cannot get the remaining battery *time*, it should resort to displaying the battery *charge* (percentage). This is probably much easier to implement and would give at least any usable value, instead of the useless “estimating…”. And, if I recall correctly, this was the behavior in Lucid. So if it is not possible to resolve the issue of getting the time estimates in the short term, I’d suggest to resort to the values that *are* available (as the charge percentage). -- Battery life estimation never comes around https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/629258 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 665865] [NEW] Rhythmbox imports (some) videos and plays them
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox Ubuntu Release: 10.10 Rhythmbox version: 0.13.1-0ubuntu5 Hello, I have various video files in my Music folder, for instance music videos or live footage ripped from some album's bonus CD or DVD or downloaded form the Internet. To my surprise, this version of Rhythmbox imports some of them in the music library, but not all of them. In the attached screenshot you can see five FLV videos downloaded from the Internet and listed by Rhythmbox in the music library (with Unknown as Genre / Artist / Album, quite understandably). All other videos in my Music folder are not recognized. At first I suspected Rhythmbox importing videos or not was a matter of container format and/or audio-video codecs, but I have examples of files in the same format and codecs, one of them being imported but the other not, so I have no idea of a possible interpretation. Then, to my utmost surprise, Rhythmbox plays these videos! I found out that when the Visualization plug-in is enabled, Rhythmbox plays the video flawlessly in an external window (see attached screenshot) (restarting Rhythmbox seems necessary, though), and when this plug-in is disabled, Rhythmbox plays only the audio, with the position slider not working as it should, i.e. it runs quickly to the right and then stops at the end while the remaining audio is read (always at normal speed). During video playback, Rhythmbox controls work as expected (pause, previous/next, moving the slider). If the Visualization button is clicked, the external window is docked into Rhythmbox (like a visualization). If it is clicked again, the external window does not pop out, the visualization disappears but the audio keeps playing. One more quirk: if I close the video window during playback, the video that was played disappears from the music library to go in the Missing Files section, with the error Output window was closed (see attached screenshot). The next time I start Rhythmbox, these errors are gone and the videos are back in the music library. So... From perusing the bug archives, I understand that Rhythmbox, although not a video player or video library manager, has some video podcast abilities through the Visualization plug-in, so perhaps the five video files it lists are recognized as downloaded video podcasts (they are not, as far as I know)? I appreciate that Rhythmbox lists and plays them, but would be even more delighted if it listed and played all the video files in my Music folder, not just these arbitrary five. To sum it up: 1. What I expected to happen: as far as I know, Rhythmbox is not supposed to list video files in the music library, let alone play them. 2. What happened instead: Rhythmbox imported and played videos, but only some of them, and with a few quirks. Shall I run Apport? It leaves me with a choice of ill-suited options: The rhythmbox interface is not working correctly No sound is being played Some audio files are not being played correctly The Ubuntu One Music Store is not working correctly Shall I report this bug upstream? (In Gnome Bugzilla, in'nit?) Shall I attach an example of video that gets recognized and an example of video that does not? ** Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Rhythmbox imports (some) videos and plays them https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/665865 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to rhythmbox in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 629258] Re: Battery life estimation never comes around
Hello OK I tried something hardware related I was considering a new install of Ubuntu, using the 64-bit edition, so booted off the live CD and noticed the same red outline of the battery indicator as on the hard drive install... ...sooo I turned off the laptop and pulled the battery out, then shoved it back in and restarted. The power indicator now seems to behave normally ! The time to charged is now slowly getting less and the details are now showing correctly - I will monitor the situation for the next few days, but thus far the issue seems to have been solved, tho I don't know if the issue was caused by a simple bad connection with the battery / motherboard interface or if there is some other switch which has been reset ? The laptop is just over a year old - the battery seems to still be a tight fit into it's compartment and there was definite solid click when I re-inserted it. Is it is possible that a kernel update somehow flicked a switch to cause the issue ? -- Battery life estimation never comes around https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/629258 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 629258] Re: Battery life estimation never comes around
I believe gnome-power-manager hasn't been able to provide a time estimate since the rewrite for upower if your battery does not supply a charge/discharge rate in /sys/class/power_supply/BAT*/current_now. My battery always shows a 0 there, so I suffer from this problem. Before upower, it used to make a projection based on measurements of the charge level over time. That would take some work to re-implement. The behavior of saying 'estimating' instead of supplying a percentage is specific to the indicator applet code (the notification area icon doesn't behave that way), and it's pretty easy to fix. [Bug 665673] Re: Express edition formats all messages as HTML as default
In upstream this bug was fixed (see http://live.gnome.org/Evolution/Art: Fixed Issues Mailer HTML mail on by default (done mbarnes)). In my opinion it's a really big problem that in express edition HTML mailing is the default. I don't have any problems if the checkbox in the settings dialog is hidden in express edition, but i want have the the possibility to configure this behaviour. -- Express edition formats all messages as HTML as default https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/665673 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to evolution in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 455786] Re: battery indicator is wrong
Unfortunately, neither modprobe fujitsu-laptop nor acpi_osi=Linux nor acpi=force helps. If I try this, my python applet that reads out the current battery states, doesn't work anymore. -- battery indicator is wrong https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/455786 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 651678] Re: anjuta crashes with assertion failure on startup
On Arch Linux and using KDE 4.5.2 I was able to solve the problem by copying ~/.gtkrc-2.0 to ~/gtkrc-2.0-kde4 -- anjuta crashes with assertion failure on startup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/651678 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gtk+2.0 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 455786] Re: battery indicator is wrong
I wonder if the reason for the problem is, that acpi doesn't recognize the status of the battery. If I run j...@xylakant:/sys/class/power_supply/BAT0$ acpi Battery 0: Unknown, 45 you can see, that the status of the battery is unknown if the ac adapter is *un*plugged, while it is j...@xylakant:/sys/class/power_supply/BAT0$ acpi Battery 0: Charging, 43%, 00:54:34 until charged when the ac adapter is plugged. I think in the first case there should be an uncharging instead of unknown. And could it be, that the xfce and kde battery indicators doesn't care if the status is unknown or not and just display the other (correct) informations while the gnome battery indicator stops working as it gets the information, that the battery status is unknown? -- battery indicator is wrong https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/455786 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
