[Bug 2051383] Re: gnome-shell high CPU utilization when moving mouse cursor

2024-01-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. And good catch, yes it should be
MUTTER_DEBUG_ENABLE_ATOMIC_KMS=0 on 22.04

It sounds like the main issue is the input rate of the Razer DeathAdder
V2 and gnome-shell's inefficient processing of a high event rate. You
should be able to bring it under control with kernel parameter
usbhid.mousepoll=2 (or 4 or 8). But this is still a gnome-shell
performance bug.

** Summary changed:

- gnome-shell high CPU utilization when moving mouse cursor
+ gnome-shell high CPU utilization when moving a high frequency mouse

[Bug 2051371] Re: Backspace in gnome-terminal often deletes cluster

2024-01-29 Thread Eberhard Beilharz
> It's never the terminal emulator (whether GNOME Terminal or any other
terminal app) that decides what to print on a backspace keypress. The
only thing it does is that it tells over the tty line that the backspace
key has been pressed.

Makes sense. However, the user thinks of gnome-terminal because that's
what he runs...

> If your input method cannot generate the symbols you need, and you
need to press backspace as a workaround to get that, moreover, you need
to rely on one particular behavior of backspace, then I'd argue that
it's all the fault of your input method, it should be able to produce
straight away whatever you wish to end up with.

Unfortunately that's not always possible. Please take a look at the wiki
page under [1]. With complex writing systems there's more than one way
to write a word which look 'correct' on the screen, but the order of the
code points is different [2]. Not very good if you search for that word.
Therefore Keyman allows to define keyboards that can auto-correct words
so that you end up with the same order of the code points regardless
which way you type [3]. And that requires to replace some codepoints
typed previously.

> Maybe the bug you _really_ wanted to report is that gnome-terminal
doesn't use the "surrounding text" feature of input methods?

That would be nice to have but until then it would be good to have
backspace working properly. But as you wrote in an earlier comment that
has nothing to do with gnome-terminal...

[Bug 2051383] Re: gnome-shell high CPU utilization when moving mouse cursor

2024-01-29 Thread Sergey Zolotarev
1. Nope, the log is normal, nothing new is logged when moving the cursor
around

2. Razer DeathAdder V2. BTW switching to 60 Hz doesn't seem to change
anything. However, switching to an old cheap mouse decreases gnome-
shell's CPU usage down to ~10%.

3. Unfortunately that didn't help. I also had this line in my
/etc/environment before:

MUTTER_DEBUG_ENABLE_ATOMIC_KMS=0

Tried both with and without it.

[Bug 1588197] Re: Can't type anything in search box

2024-01-29 Thread Tony Beaumont
I have attached a copy of the output I get with this issue.
The first error
```console
(evince:25290): IBUS-WARNING **: 10:54:21.331: Unable to connect to ibus: Could
not connect: Permission denied
```
happens immediately when I run evince. The second error:
```console
(evince:25403): GLib-WARNING **: 10:56:05.731: getpwuid_r(): failed due to
unknown user id (1855985172)
```
occurs when I try to add a note to the PDF document. Evince does not accept
keyboard input.

I can fix the problem by doing:
```console
rm -r ~/.config/ibus
```
which is a fix I saw on a duplicate version of this bug on here

[Bug 2051383] Re: gnome-shell high CPU utilization when moving mouse cursor

2024-01-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yes it's normal for the application's CPU usage to go up when it's
receiving input events. So that suggests this is just a high frequency
problem.

* Is your log flooding at all? (journalctl -f)

* I can already see you monitor is 144Hz. What model of mouse are you
using?

* Try adding MUTTER_DEBUG_FORCE_KMS_MODE=simple to /etc/environment and
reboot.

[Bug 2051383] Re: gnome-shell high CPU utilization when moving mouse cursor

2024-01-29 Thread Sergey Zolotarev
I'm sorry, the 20% part was a bit of an overstatement, after observing
more I can say it's somewhere between 1% to 5%.

I have the following extensions active:
- Desktop Icons NG
- Ubuntu AppIndicators
- Ubuntu Dock

Disabling all extensions didn't change anything in my case.

Also I've noticed an interesting thing: when moving the cursor, CPU
usage goes up for gnome-shell AND for whatever process on top of whose
window I"m moving it. For example, if a Text Editor window is active, it
goes up for the gedit process.

If it helps, below are a few screenshots of "top" taken when I moved my
mouse, with Xorg and Wayland for comparison, and a video.
