[Bug 1949340] Re: [upstream] Saving downloads or pages is difficult because of unfocused file chooser dialog

2023-02-17 Thread ADFH
Ahh.. Perhaps they have been conflated the two somewhere in amongst all
the tickets here marked as duplicates. I'm talking about the bug where
focus remains on browser window, rather than file dialog, requiring
pointer device interaction to target the newly opened file dialog... as
opposed to focus within the file dialog being unusual (which also seems
to be a thing).

This issue (file dialog not focused when launched from browser) is
arguably an accessibility issue as well, if a pointing device is
required to control file dialogs where previously it could be driven by
kbd alone.

2023-02-15 Thread ADFH
I see that there's an upstream patch that's apparently pending. Do we
know when that'll make it into the distro? Will it enter 22.04 LTS or
miss it?

I also logged https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-

My workaround is a .desktop file that calls xrandr with my desired

[Bug 1826081] [NEW] Ability to automatically arrange desktop icons gone in 19.04

2019-04-23 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

Upgraded from Ubuntu 18.10 to Ubuntu 19.04.

On the upside, Ubuntu 19.04 now handles my unusual desktop geometry, and
displays desktop icons within physical monitor dimensions (I have one
landscape, one portrait display).

The downside is there's no sort option for desktop icons anymore.

Icons are snapped to grid automatically, but all arrangement for now is
manual.

The restoration of "Sort by name" functionality at the very least, and
perhaps the addition of "Sort by type" would be even better.

[Bug 1826078] [NEW] tracker-miner-fs brings system to its knees when indexing - scope for deduplicating hardlinked files?

2019-04-23 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

I've noticed since upgrading from 18.10 to 19.04 that tracker-miner-fs
has been going to town on trying to index my filesystem.. so much so,
I've had to switch off all the search options, and then switch off
search overall, as well as call "tracker reset -r" as it seems that just
turning off search in the settings -> search titlebar doesn't always
take effect.

Within my home directory, and in other parts of my filesystem, I have
some folders that have date stamped rsync backups of remote systems.
Between directories, identical files are hard-linked, so they're stored
once, if the same, but listed in multiple directories if they existed at
that time (so each folder is a ready to go "point in time" snapshot, but
identical data is only stored once).

I believe that tracker-miner-fs is treating each instance of a file
listing as an independent copy because they exist in separate
directories, even though they're hard linked, and subsequently
processing the same files again and again and again, consuming the
majority of IO bandwidth on my drives.

There is the UI for Gnome tracker, but it's not that granular, with
options for whether or not things like "Documents" are included, but not
folders below that.

Where this enters bug territory is that this behaviour makes the system
unusable due to the IO load, with no visible indication of what's going
on.

The fixes might be feature suggestions.. Perhaps scope for:
* A ".nomedia" or similar .file like Android that tells tracker "Do not index
this folder"?
* Perhaps scope for tracker to keep a record of indexed inodes so it can skip
files it already knows about?
* Flagging that indexing is taking place in notification area with ability to
stop it, if it peaks at a certain IO utilisation?

[Bug 1577879] [NEW] File save as dialog doesn't switch to keyed in path anymore when pressing enter

2016-05-03 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

Not sure if this is in Nautilus or a GTK package or something else..

I run Unity as my desktop environment at the moment. With a recent
update, the file save dialog presented to me by Firefox appears to have
changed. I'm pretty sure it's an OS dialog and not a Firefox specific
control, but please feel free to bounce this to whichever package is
responsible for the File Save As dialog generated by Firefox 46.0 in
Ubuntu now.

In the past, when the save dialog came up, I was able to enter a path (absolute
or relative) in the filename field:
* If it was a directory path that existed, the directory contents would be
shown inside the window, allowing me to then specify a name
* If it was a directory path that didn't exist, it'd take me to the deepest
part of the path that did match
* If it was a directory that did exist, and a filename that didn't, it'd save
as that filename in that folder

The last is still true, but the others aren't anymore.. Say I have
structure:

home
.../folder
../sub2
../sub3

... and I last saved into sub3 and I want to save into sub2, if I remove
the filename from the name box, and I type ../sub2 and press enter, it
doesn't navigate to the folder anymore.. The auto-complete function
seems more reliable now, and it knows the folder exists, but the only
way to actually show its contents now would be to click through the
tree..

This feels like a functionality downgrade. I should be able to type a
pathname into the filename area of the dialog, press enter, and have it
take me to that particular folder.

[Bug 884724] [NEW] Sticky Notes applet ignores option on individual notes to follow or not follow system colour scheme

2011-11-01 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

When creating or updating a sticky note, one can elect whether or not to
use the default colours for a note. Normally I elect to go for a
traditional stickynote colour (black text on a yellow background). It
would appear now, that regardless of the setting selected, the note gets
its colour settings from the system scheme.

[Bug 703456] Re: Metacity not handling Alt+Tab between windows correctly at all times

2011-01-16 Thread ADFH
Another situation, again seems to involve the 'double click to maximise'
option..

Open an image in GIMP.
Double click the titlebar to maximise the window.
Now try and drag (mouse down on toolbox titlebar and move mouse) the toolbox
window out of the way without first explicitly selecting it (mouse down, mouse
up, then mouse down for drag)

Unless you explicitly select the toolbox prior to dragging, after
passing some sort of "snap" threshold, magically the image window you
just maximised is unmaximised/restored and starts to be moved with the
mouse cursor, as if you'd gone to move it.

Therefore it seems that double clicking on a titlebar to maximise a
window seems to set that double clicked titlebar as having focus,
regardless of where other methods might set window/titlebar focus until
you actually click on the titlebar of another window. This has the
effect of actions performed on what one thinks to be the active windows
titlebar being re-routed to what the window manager thinks is the active
titlebar.

Kinda as if Xorg goes, "oh, that bit of the window's handled by the
window manager... Window manager, someone's clicking on the X button on
the active window" and the window manager goes "X button on the active
window.. What's the active Window? Oh, it's (the wrong one).."

** Summary changed:

- Metacity not handling Alt+Tab between windows correctly at all times

titlebar/window control actions

[Bug 700838] [NEW] Attempting to add metadata to an AAC file failed resulting in crash

2011-01-09 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I had an audio file, extracted from an MP4 file, downloaded from a
website..

Eg.

$ ffmpeg -i .mp4 -acodec copy .aac
...
$ file aac
aac: MPEG ADTS, AAC, v4 LC, 44.1 kHz, stereo

Obviously, having been demuxed, there was none of the usual metadata on
the audio track and I went into Rhythmbox to add it.

Rhythmbox failed with the message, "unable to create tag writing
element".

[Bug 695753] [NEW] Nokia N95 MTP mount fails first time, succeeds on second attempt

2010-12-30 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Upon connecting Nokia N95 first time, gnome pops up a dialog saying that
it sees a media player and do I want to open rhythmbox. In the interim,
it also mounts the phone via MTP, placing an icon on the desktop.

Rhythmbox opens, but fails to be able to see the phone.

I right click on the phone on the desktop and say 'Eject', then unplug
and replug the phone in and select Media player (MTP) mode again, this
time rhythmbox sees the phone (after about 30 seconds of seizing).

[Bug 695752] [NEW] MTP transfers files to E:\ of Nokia N95 instead of E:\Sounds\Digital

2010-12-30 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox-plugins

When I connect my Nokia N95 and select "Media player" mode, the phone
presents itself to the computer as an MTP compatible device and (with
some crashing I'll report separately) it'll allow rhythmbox to manage
the music collection on it.

Unfortunately when I sync new music onto the N95, it lands in the root
folder of the memory card. I then need to go into the filemanager on the
phone, reconnect the phone as a mass storage device or pull out the
memory card and manually shuffle it such that the files are popped into
the correct folder.

Is there a way in MTP mode of telling rhythmbox it needs to put the
music lower in the folder heirarchy, similar to how one does it with
normal mass storage devices? I tried dropping an ".is_audio_player" file
containing:

audio_folders=sounds/digital/
folder_depth=2

... on the device, but I don't think it pays attention to this in MTP
mode.

[Bug 659318] Re: gthumb crashes upon opening a folder with a .comments subfolder

2010-11-29 Thread ADFH
To test further, I took the attached XML file from this report and
replaced an XML file I created by adding a comment through gthumb.
gthumb segfaulted again.

I removed the XML file from the folder (leaving other XML files in
place) and gthumb did not crash.

It therefore does seem that certain XML file contents will cause
segfaults. An app shouldn't crash because a file contains unexpected
data.

[Bug 669358] Re: Exporting CD Audio disc to library doesn't include all the metadata entered on the metadata entry/lookup screen

2010-11-01 Thread ADFH
Metadata not being included aside, the AAC option is back...

As far as I can tell what happened was that when I said no to
overwriting an existing file (I was retrying the import to see if
metadata would appear after I tried using dialog slightly different way)
it broke the import process and rhythmbox forgot about AAC and
eventually locked up.

I killall'd rhythmbox and then restarted it and AAC was back.

[Bug 669358] [NEW] Exporting CD Audio disc to library doesn't include all the metadata entered on the metadata entry/lookup screen

2010-11-01 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Purchased a new audio CD (Tiƫsto - Kaleidoscope) and went to import it
to my media library using rhythmbox.

In the CD Audio device tab/window, Rhythmbox displayed a message
advising me that it couldn't find the album on Musicbrainz, but appeared
to have most of the info available via Freedb. I filled in the missing
info (Genre, Year), right clicked on the disc in the left hand column
and selected "Extract to library" (I also submitted the disc to
Musicbrainz).

After rhythmbox had finished importing, I found that the tracks
themselves did not include the artist name, track number or year even
though I had filled these in and rhythmbox had displayed them on the CD
Audio device pane/window/tab.

The encoding type I selected for extraction to the library in
preferences was originally "CD Audio quality (lossless AAC .m4a)..

(Incidentally, now I've gone back to check that setting, the preference
for AAC has automagically vanished?)
