[Bug 2061292] Re: Reduce animation setting gets forgotten on every reboot

2024-04-18 Thread Alistair Cunningham
I think I've figured out why this is happening. If I restart directly
into Ubuntu, then it works correctly and the setting is remembered.
However, if I restart into Unity, then back into Ubuntu, the setting is
forgotten. Perhaps Unity is overwriting the setting?

[Bug 1876839] Re: File-Roller continues as it has done for years to crash

2020-05-06 Thread Alistair
Could it be a naming convention problem eg .fr-pnPFmr/Dropbox would not be
permitted due to slash??
Im also thinking the problem is occurring on larger number of files/larger
filesize due to cache being used on these, but not on small files/sizes.
Clearly this would be an OS problem, but it is consistent whether I use any PC
here and any variant of ubuntu and ARJ compress.

OK I tried for the debug version of file-roller but there is none listed within
my repo.
Instead I installed engrampa, which produces the same error, but also provides
some error from bash:
Could not create the symbolic link
'/home/alistair/.cache/.fr-a0EpLC/Documents', pointing to
'/home/alistair/MEGAsync/Documents'

Checked .cache permissions and owner/user have read/write, with others
as read access.

[Bug 1876839] [NEW] File-Roller continues as it has done for years to crash

2020-05-04 Thread Alistair
Public bug reported:

Ive been using FR for many years it gets totally out of sync when there are
several thousand files.
This has been reported as a bug by many others as well.

Today I selected dropbox folder and tried running FR in bash but there
were no error report, the messagebox showed compressing 13,500 files
then crash after a minute.

However if I use bash command:
alistair@alsE590:~/Dropbox$ arj a -r myfiles.arj *

arc is created properly.

[Bug 1861933] [NEW] Software 3.35.2 vs Synaptic shows different upgrades

2020-02-04 Thread Alistair
Public bug reported:

Hi Ive always used Synaptic, and due to Software unable to reliably search.
Search is another bug in Software - not always reliably shows contents of repos.

I use Synaptic more often than Software, and notice that when I do a ‘mark all
upgrades’ in Synaptic, it shows lots of updates, whereas Software is showing
its up-to-date. Both package managers have identical repositories and settings.
Before Mark All Upgrades I do: reload package info, unmark all.
Perhaps this is related to the faulty search function in Software?

[Bug 1522527] [NEW] Feature request: reinstate the menu option to hide the toolbar

2015-12-03 Thread Alistair Muldal
Public bug reported:

Back in the days of Gnome 2 the evince toolbar used to be fully user-
customizable, but now there is no longer even an option to hide the
toolbar. I find this especially annoying when I want to view documents
in full-screen mode on a small laptop display.

There are quite a few questions regarding this on AskUbuntu:

http://askubuntu.com/q/430822/185188
http://askubuntu.com/q/587095/185188
http://askubuntu.com/q/657226/185188

There is also a 4-year-old feature request for a keyboard shortcut to
disable the toolbar here, although at the time the request was made it
seems there was still a menu option that did this:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/780491

I'm using evince 3.16.1 on Ubuntu 15.10.

Did you attempt to add the indicator-menu (global menu indicator)?
Because that does not work, will crash like this, and is unsupported.

[Bug 1270090] Re: time-admin can not install ntp

2014-12-12 Thread Alistair Buxton
Sorry I forgot about this. Here's a debdiff which should fix it. It will
need cleaning up and testing.

[Bug 1270090] Re: time-admin can not install ntp

2014-12-12 Thread Alistair Buxton
What this does is replace all the synaptic and gksudo code with a dbus
call to packagekit. The old code was added in an Ubuntu patch, so I just
regenerated that patch with the new code instead. I don't know if that
is the correct way to do it. Only one file needs to be modified, gst-
package.c. The new version of 80_gst-packages-common.patch is generated
with different diff options so the diff is kind of confusing, sorry
about that.

The packagekit source is taken almost verbatim from the C example here:
http://www.freedesktop.org/software/PackageKit/pk-faq.html#session-
methods

[Bug 512427] Re: Don't let offscreen widgets do grab adds

2014-11-08 Thread Alistair Buxton
This patch causes an annoying g_critical if you add a grab on a widget
before it is realized. In this case toplevel-window will be null.

This also make me wonder what happens if you add a grab to an offscreen
widget before realizing it.

[Bug 1106388] Re: gnome-panel crashes when removing applet from panel.

2014-08-24 Thread Alistair Buxton
This bug is trivial to reproduce on any computer, therefore no strack
trace is required by the developers - if they really want one, they can
generate it easily.

[Bug 1076830] Re: panel crashes if you add, remove, then add the same applet

2014-08-24 Thread Alistair Buxton
Firstly this isn't a duplicate bug report - the steps to reproduce are
different.

Secondly, the steps to reproduce work on any hardware, so if a developer
was really interested in fixing this it would be trivial for them to
simply repeat the steps to reproduce and get a backtrace.

The ChangeCurrentFolderToRoot failed appears to be harmless, for example when
opening in eog this message is printed but the image still loads.

transfer got cancelled appears to be the message which is ultimately
printed when a transfer actually fails.

[Bug 1283615] Re: xrandr layouts shouldn't be changed on nvidia-tool custom config

2014-06-21 Thread Alistair Buxton
No, that's not correct at all.

g-s-d/u-s-d do not run in Xubuntu, however, they do run in the greeter
if the greeter is unity-greeter. They exit before Xubuntu desktop starts
up, but at that point they have already ruined the monitor
configuration.

Since they do not run in Xubuntu, there is no way to configure them. I
can use randr to set up my displays, but it won't be saved to g-s-d
because g-s-d is not running. This is true regardless of what graphics
card I use.

This is not a feature request to detect custom nvidia configs, it is a
feature request to not stomp all over the standard interface for
configuring Xorg, which is Xorg.conf.

Setting the bug name back to the original for this reason.

** Summary changed:

- xrandr layouts shouldn't be changed on nvidia-tool custom config

[Bug 1283615] Re: gnome-settings-daemon trashes monitor config

2014-06-21 Thread Alistair Buxton
Also, if you do for some reason run g-s-d in Xubuntu desktop, it will
reset your monitor configuration to defaults.

This bug appears to run deeper than just Xubuntu and nvidia, see for
example: http://bernaerts.dyndns.org/linux/74-ubuntu/309-ubuntu-dual-
display-monitor-position-lost

The solution is simple: if g-s-d cannot find a monitors.xml it should
leave the display configuration alone. There is no reason to care about
any other configuation mechanism the user might or might not be using.

Yes, because Xubuntu doesn't ship the standard monitor configuration
tool, and even if it did, it doesn't work properly with nvidia.

can never be deleted because the option is disabled.

  To reproduce:

  1. Open a Gtk3 application such as firefox, gedit etc.
  2. Open the File Open requester.
  3. Drag a file to the bookmarks.
  4. Right click on the file bookmark.

Expected result: Should be able to click on Remove to remove the
  bookmark.

Actual result: The remove option is always disabled.

Workaround: Edit ~/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks and delete the bookmark
  line.

+ Also affects trusty.

[Bug 1243205] [NEW] Clock gets stuck on time zone change

2013-10-22 Thread Alistair Cunningham
Public bug reported:

Apologies if this is reported against the wrong package; feel free to
reassign it.

When changing time zone in Ubuntu 13.10, the clock gets stuck on the old
time.

Yesterday evening I travelled from Manaus to Rio de Janeiro, which is a
two hour time zone change to the east. At 20:40 Manaus time, I clicked
on the clock on the Gnome panel, selected Date Time settings..., and
clicked on where Rio de Janeiro is on the world map. It automatically
selected Sao Paulo, which I guess is the closest place it has data for.
I then closed the Time Date window. The clock should then have changed
to 22:40 (as it would have in Ubuntu 13.04), but instead stayed stuck on
20:40. Right now (11:30 Rio time the following day), the clock in the
Gnome panel still says 20:40. Running the date command in a terminal
produces the correct time:

$ date
Tue Oct 22 11:30:42 BRST 2013

so it's definitely a problem with the Gnome clock applet rather than the
system time.

[Bug 1219120] Re: gedit has no application icon

2013-09-09 Thread Alistair Buxton
I have tracked down the cause if this problem. On Win+Mac gtk sets the
application icon directly, but on Linux it was handled by smclient which
would get the icon from the .desktop. smclient support was removed, but
the icon setting call was not replaced when this was done.

[Bug 1070449] Re: Login without password option effectively locks super user out!

2013-09-05 Thread Alistair Buxton
I meant the other bug is greeter related, and it is triggered by the
most obvious workaround for this bug - recreating your password using
passwd at terminal. The root issue is probably the same so if someone
makes a fix for either bug they should probably make sure it addresses
both scenarios. The way you suggest does indeed sound logical but I
don't know much about PAM.

[Bug 1217916] Re: While editing main menu, xfce4-panel crashed with SIGSEGV in fast_validate()

2013-08-28 Thread Alistair Buxton
It should be enough to create the directory, I think. That's what
alacarte is doing - making the directory, making the file, then crashing
when it tries to write a non-ascii character, so the files end up empty
which xfce can't handle.

great!.
Now can someone please do the same for the U.K?
It's been 4 years since I took up Linux, and not once has the forecast worked.
A previous suggestion to allow the user to be able to change the web site would
have been the way to go, but obviously, you know different.
Try this page for size then...
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/livingston-fc#?tab=regionalForecastfcTime=1370818800

There are another 499 sites similar to above, to change to get the
forecasts for the whole of the UK to work.

I wish you the best of British...

[Bug 1188970] [NEW] mouse pointer shows wait icon repetitively while leaking memory

2013-06-08 Thread Alistair Buxton
Public bug reported:

After some extended use (eg 2 hours of continuous use of filters,
eraser, drawing, multiple layers) gimp starts leaking around 3MB memory
per second. It allocates large amounts of memory repetitively with close
to 1 second interval. Each time it does this the mouse pointer turns in
to the wait symbol. It is still possible to use the program while this
happens but the pointer constantly flickering is a bit distracting.

However, if ignored, gimp will eventually consume all system memory in a
very short amount of time. I have 16 GB and gimp has been OOM killed
twice today after showing the behaviour for an extended period. The
second time it happened while I was working in a different application.

Here is a video showing the behaviour:

[Bug 948667] Re: gnome-panel crashed with SIGSEGV in gtk_widget_pop_verify_invariants()

2013-01-27 Thread Alistair Buxton
My bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
panel/+bug/1106547 was just marked duplicate of this one, but doesn't
match with the description posted on the upstream bug.

- I can't reproduce the crash in 12.04 or 12.10, only in raring.
- I can reproduce it every time by a simple procedure: add an applet to the
panel (ie fish), and then remove it.
- It is definitely not a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/1076830 - while
similar, the steps to reproduce are not identical, and the workaround I
discovered for that bug don't affect this one.

So, is my bug really a duplicate?

no you've misunderstood. the bug in question is bug #1106547 which i
believe apport has misidentified as a dupe of this bug. #1076830 is
irrelevant, and i shouldn't have mentioned it. it's similar but also not
a dupe.

[Bug 1070449] Re: Login without password option effectively locks super user out!

2013-01-17 Thread Alistair Buxton
To be clear: the problem here is that the password change dialog in user
accounts inside gnome control center demands that you enter your
existing password. This isn't possible after you have previously cleared
the password.

Changing the password at terminal with passwd works, but causes the
greeter to misbehave.

[Bug 1067901] Re: can't configure any accounts in empathy

2013-01-15 Thread Alistair Buxton
The problem is that gnome-control-center-signon uses one of these
OnlyShowIn lines:

OnlyShowIn=GNOME;Unity;

So if you happen to be using, say, Lubuntu, you won't be able to
configure empathy accounts unless you know how to launch it from the
command line.

[Bug 1067901] Re: can't configure any accounts in empathy

2013-01-15 Thread Alistair Buxton
The main problem here is that if you are running a desktop oher than
what is listed in the OnlyShowIn field in the .desktop, gnome-control-
center will refuse to display that configuration panel, even if you
explicitly ask for it, eg:

 gnome-control-center credentials

Instead it will show the top level configuration screen (where the icon
is of course absent.) This means it is impossible to configure empathy
(and indicator-datetime) without first editing a .desktop file in
/usr/share/applications.

[Bug 1094581] [NEW] playback freezing with flac files

2012-12-29 Thread Alistair Buxton
Public bug reported:

I have now found a way to reproduce this problem every time. You need to
have the super brothers: sword sworcery sound track in lossless flac
format. To reproduce, play the album in order with shuffle off. It will
freeze playback at the end of track 15, which just happens to be 1
second long.

Specifically you only need to play track 14, let it continue to track 15
(aw, this is really nice), and it will freeze before playing track 16.

This bug might be the same as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/978604, or
maybe not.

If necessary I can supply the audio files for testing.
