Indeed! This bug was reported over 5 years ago and never got any more
attention than "is it working now?".

[Bug 1478364] [NEW] invalid session being saved

2015-07-26 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Public bug reported:

When I log out of my desktop I get some files in ~/.config/gnome-session
/saved-session/, pressumably the saving of my session so that it can be
restored on next login.

But on next login I get an error from gnome-session:

env: unrecognized option '--sm-client-id'
Try 'env --help' for more information.
...
gnome-session[9609]: WARNING: Application 'gnome-panel.desktop' failed to
register before timeout
gnome-session[9609]: CRITICAL: We failed, but the fail whale is dead. Sorry

and the session aborts. Investigation leads to the following:

$ cat ~/.config/gnome-session/saved-session/gnome-panel.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=Panel
Comment=Launch other applications and provide various utilities to manage
windows, show the time, etc.
Icon=gnome-panel
Exec=env --sm-client-id 1037b9c00525f898c41437926147603637010179
XDG_MENU_PREFIX=gnome-flashback- gnome-panel
Terminal=false
X-GNOME-Bugzilla-Bugzilla=GNOME
X-GNOME-Bugzilla-Product=gnome-panel
X-GNOME-Bugzilla-Component=general
X-GNOME-Bugzilla-Version=3.8.0
Categories=GNOME;GTK;System;Core;
OnlyShowIn=GNOME;Unity;
NoDisplay=true
X-GNOME-AutoRestart=true
X-GNOME-Autostart-Phase=Panel
X-GNOME-Provides=panel

X-GNOME-Autostart-startup-id=1037b9c00525f898c41437926147603637010179

Clearly the env --sm-client-id is causing this problem. But why is
gnome-session saving this incorrect .desktop file for the session?

This is gnome-session-3.9.90-0ubuntu12.1 on Ubuntu Trusty.

[Bug 1478364] Re: invalid session being saved

2015-07-26 Thread Brian J. Murrell
As you will notice, upstream closed this bug OBSOLETE with the
explanation:

Version 3.9 is an ancient unstable development version and not supported
anymore by GNOME developers. GNOME developers are no longer working on that
older version, so there will not be any bug fixes by GNOME developers for the
version that you use.

So looks like it's on you Ubuntu/Canonical to fix this as this is a bug
in an LTS release.

TBH, getting a fix released in LTS doesn't really matter so much to me

Like I said, *I* don't need a release of this in LTS. I have my local

But other users... inexperienced (i.e. with the bug
finding/reporting/fixing and package updating) users who might not even
know where to find information about this bug in their desktop O/S
deserve a fix.

Ultimately, users should not need to know the SRU procedure. They
should just get fixes because maintainers provide them for them.

But I do have a 12.04 machine and I already submitted a patch (which
just came from upstream, not my patch) which fixes the problem on the
gnome-keyring shipped in 12.04 LTS. So really, I don't know why you are
proposing all of this rigmarole with backporting patches from g-k-r
3.6.1 and sponsorship, etc. Why not just ship the LTS 3.2.2 g-k-r
release with the attached patch?

It's all of this beauraucratic red-tape to getting such a simple but
important fix into what is supposed to be a supported release that makes
Ubuntu no longer a desired platform to use.

[Bug 1094496] [NEW] gnome-keyring-daemon leaks memory

2012-12-29 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Public bug reported:

gnome-keyring-daemon gets killed here every few days due to it's memory
size exceeding the site imposed limit of 2GB per process. The ulimit of
course is not the problem as even with an unlimited setting, it would
just grow until it was killed by the OOM killer.

The real problem here is that gnome-keyring-daemon has no business
growing to even a fraction of the 2GB limit imposed here. 2G for a
simple keyring daemon is absurd.

Looking at the upstream changelog for versions beyond the 3.2.2 on which
the Ubuntu version is based appear to have fixed memory leaks. Given
that this leaking 3.2.2-2ubuntu4 version is in the Precise LTS release,
upgrading to a newer Ubuntu release is not a solution nor an option --
this LTS release is supposed to be supported beyond 2017. A fix needs
to be backported. Having gnome-keyring-daemon leaking for 5 more years
is simply unacceptable.

As you can see, 1GB of ram for such a trivial (in terms of data use)

until the process gets an ENOMEM and exits and a new one is started in
it's place, only to fall victim to the same fate.

[Bug 1033904] Re: memory leak in gnome-keyring-daemon

2012-08-07 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Seriously. Are you folks really that bitter about this Mint thing? I
know you know that Mint is nothing more than Ubuntu Linux with usable
desktops (i.e. Cinnamon and MATE), for those people that find your
tablet-izing Unity desktop simply unusable.

Heck, Mint is not even a fork but simply a layer of packages on top of
Ubuntu Linux -- really, no different than installing a bunch of packages
out of a PPA. Do you simply refuse to support Ubuntu Linux packages
simply because a PPA may have installed some unrelated packages?

You can see clearly from the apport output that this report is for an
unmodified gnome-keyring package straight out of your own
repositories:

Package: gnome-keyring 3.2.2-2ubuntu4

apt-cache validates this assertion also:

$ apt-cache policy gnome-keyring
gnome-keyring:
  Installed: 3.2.2-2ubuntu4
  Candidate: 3.2.2-2ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 3.2.2-2ubuntu4 0
500 http://apt.interlinx.bc.ca/ubuntu/ precise/main i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

So, are you really going to play this sour grapes game or are you going
to do the right thing here?

Re: [Bug 1033904] Re: memory leak in gnome-keyring-daemon

@Brian: no biterness there but we have too much to do and I'm not

But you know, just like you do with your ubuntu package postfix, they
postfix the packages they modify with linuxmint such as:

ii plymouth 0.8.2-2ubuntu28-1linuxmint2 graphical boot animation ...

And doubly so, I also demonstrated for you that this package is a Ubuntu
package from a Ubuntu repository, so your whole what mint might [...]
hack into our packages really holds no water.

 some replies though:

[ requoted to properly attribute what I said ]

Ubuntu Linux -- really, no different than installing a bunch of packages

We do reject report coming from ppa users (including the official GNOME3
ppa) yes, we don't have the resources to try to figure what might happen
 with non supported combinaison

Did you miss the part above where I said in relation to PPAs unrelated
packages. Of course I don't expect you to look at packages that come
form PPAs and I never insinuated that I do. I clearly said unrelated
packages.

Mint also happen to do very hackish things (like patching files
installed by packages on boot from init script, that's how they change
their user agent in firefox for example to avoid repackaging it), we
know of a few hacks like that and I don't trust them to not create real
 issues with those

Do you really think they are doing something like that with
gnome-keyring-daemon? Or is this just an excuse?

If Mint was not a fork

They are not a fork. Must of what is in a Mint installation comes
directly from Ubuntu repositories.

they would just package cinnamon and mate in a
ppa or in Ubuntu universe and create an Ubuntu flavor for it the way
Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu etc are doing, you liking it or not what they
are doing is forking the distribution rather than collaborating with us.

Really though, how is them adding a repository for their packages,
layering on top of Ubuntu any different than adding a PPA anyway. Sure,
they might have decided to put a bunch more polish and marketing around
it, but surely you cannot really say that the additional mint repository
that one adds to Ubuntu to get mint is really any different than adding
a PPA.

You can see clearly from the apport output that this report is for an
unmodified gnome-keyring package straight out of your own repositories:
 Package: gnome-keyring 3.2.2-2ubuntu4

 No, I can't, see comment #1

 modified.conffile..etc.xdg.autostart.gnome.keyring.gpg.desktop.txt
 modified.conffile..etc.xdg.autostart.gnome.keyring.pkcs11.desktop.txt
 modified.conffile..etc.xdg.autostart.gnome.keyring.secrets.desktop.txt
 modified.conffile..etc.xdg.autostart.gnome.keyring.ssh.desktop.txt

Those are configuration files. So any package in a Ubuntu installation
with modified configuration files is automatically Invalid?

 those are modified conffiles

Yes. conffiles. conffiles are meant to be modified. That's the
*entire* point of them being conffiles.

Depends what you call the right thing, I'm going to focus on supporting
Ubuntu users and let the Mint team supports their users, it seems only
fair? Why would forking and not assuming the responsability which come
 with the fork be right?

Because you know in all honesty that this is a bona fide Ubuntu package
that has a defect in it and the Mint thing really has nothing to do with
it. It's just a convenient reason to close a bug report without
actually doing anything.

OK. I will humor you...

$ rhythmbox-client --next

Clearly command-not-found is also broken but it doesn't change the
fact that there is simply no rhythmbox-client command installed.

packages.ubuntu.com even confirms this:

Dude, surely you can see that this command-not-found issue is

[Bug 886805] [NEW] Font size override doesn't work

2011-11-06 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Public bug reported:

If I try to use Preferences-Mail Preferences-Message Fonts (with Use
the same fonts as other applications unchecked of course) to override
the general desktop font I can only only override the message display

2011-06-23 Thread Brian J. Murrell
No triage at all? I would say that Scott is correct and that libproxy
is busted.

[Bug 660455] Re: clock-applet continually crashing

2011-01-10 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Upstream seems to be ignoring the bug report.

I think you need to either look into using a different JS engine for
libproxy or abandon using libproxy. Either way, having applications
continuing to crash due to the reliance on buggy and unmaintained
software is not a workable situation.

I'm afraid I won't be able to do that testing as I also need the patch

In fact I asked a number of times on bug 660626 about whether that patch

Is that how Ubuntu is closing bugs now? Ignoring them until they lapse?

But what about the maverick version that we are all still using?

I was assured that evolution in maverick was going to be maintained

patches upstream to the Ubuntu maintainers instead of continuing to just
maintain my own local, patched and working release. Is this no longer
the case? Will this effort not benefit maverick any more? Just want to

[Bug 669971] Re: gnome-panel clock applet crashes behind a firewall

2010-11-04 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Using apport for this crash is unacceptable due to the fact that it
sends the core file which has sensitive data (i.e. accounts/passwords)
in it. I have complained over and over again about the inability to
remove sensitive data from apport reports but it seems to get ignored
over and over again.

That said, I am happy to attach specific attachments from an apport-
unpack here, but I will not attach my CoreDump.

I previously mentioned in comment #2 that this is likely a duplicate of
bug 660455 where I have included a stack trace and that stack trace
looks the same as the one I have in the StackTrace attachment of my

time (0:05). Screensaver kicks in, so idleness is being determined.
The screens are just never put into their power-save mode.

[Bug 665330] Re: Hide Junk messages in Search folders

2010-10-22 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Backport upstream patch.

To test, create a search folder and either populate the underlying
physical folder with spam or wait for some to be populated. Exit
evolution and then restart it. Without the patch you should see the
spam even though it's been marked as junk. With the patch, junk stays
hidden from the search folder the same way it does for the physical
folder.

This patch is a backport of the upstream patch.

To test, configure evolution to use a proxy which requires a

image URL references, try to force the images to load with a ctrl-i. If
the images load and you have the patch from LP 664169, you should see

Public bug reported:

Similar bugs are 473705 and 550054, but since there appears to be no
effort whatsoever to debug this issue (just a bunch of me toos from
other sufferers) from the ubuntu folks i thought I would shine a new

[Bug 660455] [NEW] clock-applet continually crashing

2010-10-14 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Many times a day I have to reload the clock-applet. It will run fine
for a while and then all of a sudden, without any particular actions
required on my part, I will get a dialog box:

Clock has quit unexpectedly

If you reload a panel object, it will
automatically be added back to the panel.

   Don't Reload Reload

Of course, I reload it and it goes for a while again and then crashes.

I've just attached a gdb to it, so unless I hear that this is a known
bug and a duplicate, I will attach the stack trace when it dies again.

[Bug 659153] Re: GConf error: Type mismatch: Expected `string' got `list' for key /apps/evolution/shell/network_config/ignore_hosts

2010-10-12 Thread Brian J. Murrell
I really have to wonder why evolution's 2.32 release was not used for
Maverick which is a gnome 2.32 release.

Now that evolution has released 2.32 they are no longer landing bug
fixes to their gnome-2-32 branch, so the responsibility of watching
their gnome-2-32 branch for bug fixes and backporting them to your 2.30
based release is going to land in your lap. I hope you take this
responsibility seriously and don't just ignore your out-of-date
evolution release.

[Bug 517820] Re: closing the lid suspends even when AC is plugged in

2010-08-30 Thread Brian J. Murrell
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I have a Toshiba Tecra M9 (although I think the make and model are
irrelevant) and I'm finding that when I close the lid, even with the AC
power plugged in the laptop suspends. This is new for Karmic on this
  machine. It's running gnome-power-manager 2.28.1-0ubuntu1.

- But TBH, this happens before I log into the desktop even, so maybe it's
- not gnome-power-manager related. Or maybe it is. I'm not sure.
