[Bug 986322] Re: Can't change layout using Unity indicator nor Gnome Control Center --12.10 upgrade
Anyway (for those that might come across this), I found a fix, my fix. 1. Open the gnome preference keyboard layout pane 2. Move the layout order, if you have more than one 3. Delete all layouts except the default one (mine was a US layout) The previous two steps have been suggested as fixes on their own (on the Ubuntu forums?). They did not work for me. I tried them together consecutively and this again did not work for me. Thus my next step. 4. Press, Reset to Defaults 5. Layout changes effectuated from both the layout pane and indicator now result in a change in layout. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/986322 Title: Can't change layout using Unity indicator nor Gnome Control Center --12.10 upgrade To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/986322/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I haven't noticed getting this while using pulseaudio, but I usually have vlc open and constantly watching something with audio. The only other common denominator, at least for me, is that I always get this while logged in using OpenBox. [Bug 986322] Re: Can't change layout using Unity indicator nor Gnome Control Center --Precise upgrade
This is a selected excerpt taken from a related bug reported by moi. I intended to copy pertinent info over but must have never gotten it. I'd also hoped that it was noticed and taken care upstream but seeing now that 12.10 still has issues with changing layouts, here it is. 1) Changing the layout in unity's applet does not change it in X. /etc/default/keyboard shows the following, even if layouts are repositioned in Keyboard Layout in System Settings. XKBMODEL=pc104 XKBLAYOUT=us XKBVARIANT=intl XKBOPTIONS=terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp 2) lightdm takes to the change, at least if it's done via Keyboard Layout. 3) X doesn't take to the change even if it's done via Keyboard Layout. Clearly there is a conflict between /etc/default/keyboard and Keyboard Layout. I would assume a workaround to be to run the following: 1. sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration 2. and then to edit /etc/default/keyboard to coincide with the input into the previous routine (pkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration) See http://krisreeves.com/things-that-should-be-easy/permanently-change- keyboard-layout-on-ubuntu-server-11-10/ There are various manifestations of this bug: 1) The issue of not being able to change a layout within a session from the Unity applet, /etc/default/keyboard not keeping sync with the unity indicator. 2) And the issue of /etc/default/keyboard not keeping in sync with selections taken in Keyboard Layout, which explains why desktop sessions (X) revert to previous settings. /etc/default/keyboard seems to want to do it's own thing, regardless of what other utilities want. 3) There are also the issues of any layout chosen from dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration not sticking, /etc/default/keyboard not keeping sync with dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration. ** Summary changed: - Can't change layout using Unity indicator nor Gnome Control Center --Precise upgrade + Can't change layout using Unity indicator nor Gnome Control Center --12.10 upgrade -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/986322 Title: Can't change layout using Unity indicator nor Gnome Control Center --12.10 upgrade To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/986322/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1031609] Re: Metacity causes unity to crash using Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV530
My mistake. I thought Metacity played some minor role, especially since Unity is slightly more stable after issuing compiz --replace from within a running instance of Unity 3D. In this case, what I'm doing is simply restarting Unity 3D. Perhaps it's a perceptual thing. I just had compiz crash on me while logged in under the Openbox/Gnome, which begs to question why compiz is running if openbox is being used as a wm or how they're relegating work. [Bug 972966] Re: Keyboard layouts do not show as selected in Keyboard indicator in Precise
You might classify the issue into two parts. Cosmetic problem: What happens when I try to change the layout, say to the second from the top layout is that the global menu icon will go from showing en to en2, the 3rd from the top to en3, etc, all the way to 4 (which apparently is the limit). In practice: Although the global menu icon may show some layout other than the top one is chosen (ie., en2), the top layout always takes predominance in practice (typing). So I effectively can't change the layout. There is one exception, selecting a different layout from lightdm works and holds into the desktop session. [Bug 986322] Re: Can't change layout using Unity applet nor Gnome Control Center --Precise upgrade
The way I see it, there are at least two issues here. 1) The issue of not being able to change a layout within a session from the Unity applet, /etc/default/keyboard not keeping sync with applet --I am supposing it is supposed to keep in sync. 2) And the issue of /etc/default/keyboard not keeping in sync with selections taken in Keyboard Layout, which explains why desktop sessions (X) revert to previous settings when logging in. /etc/default/keyboard and~/.dmrc seem to want to do their own things, regardless of what other utilities want. There might be a third, since I've tried to use dpkg-reconfigure to configure what X uses. Workaround -seems to be to choose the layout from lightdm. Although the layout does indeed change in X (and not in console, unless perhaps a reboot effectuates the change), it is not reflected in ~/.dmrc nor in /etc/default/keyboard. So where are the layouts that take precedence come from? Changes from lightdm are not reflected in the layout applet, either. [Bug 951123] Re: nautilus not natural scrolling
So natural scrolling is part of something larger called smooth scrolling in Gnome and it's automatically enabled if it picks up on a tablet or some other ultra-portable medium. But where does leave us mouse/pad users --be that of desktops or laptops-- that prefer natural scrolling? Apparently, the answer is that we're on our own because xmodmap (or at least natural scrolling initiated via xmodmap) is an unsupported hack (unsupported configuration ... gnome-tweak to enable weird options). The more I thought about this problem, the more I came closer to realizing a few things. 1. Natural scrolling via xmodmap (and gtk+ or qt) is NOT a hack, and less an unsupported one for that matter. How do I know this? Because I remembered that xmodmap is an Xorg utility. We still use Xorg, after all. 2. My .Xmodmap is indeed being picked up; I know this because I've reassigned some keys and they're implemented properly. So, gtk+/gnome is selectively not picking up on the reverse scrolling directive. Therefore, what's happening here is that gtk+/Gnome is not abiding by X protocols. In other words, gtk/Gnome is at fault here and in that sense it IS most certainly a bug. 3. I can only assume that in their desire to cater to the ultra-portable market Gnome devs have forgotten about xmodmap, in as far as scrolling direction (they do have event structures and something called GdkScrollDirection ), and hard coded directionality with their smooth scrolling. And this is probably the source of the bug. Solution Allow user intervention. This is not unheard of as “Reverse Scrolling Direction” under System Settings is already implemented by KDE (see http://imagecdn.maketecheasier.com/2011/09/naturalscrolling-kde.png). Aside The Ubuntu app called naturalscrolling does not work and seems to have messed with other key reassignments, by the way, when I tried it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/951123 Title: nautilus not natural scrolling To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/951123/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 951123] Re: nautilus not natural scrolling
Sebastien: I've tested the if my macbook pro pad registers natural scrolling and it does not. To clarify, when my fingers glide over the pad towards me, the on-screen document scrolls to the bottom of the page rather than to the top (as it should in natural/reverse scrolling). So unless setting 5 before 4 in .Xmodmap is screwing up a gtk's already implemented, it's still a problem on pads, nor is it working with mice. As for gnome picking up this feature because it's part of gtk, well, I've looked at Unity's mouse preference pane and there's nothing called smooth scrolling there, much like the case with nautilus' preference pane, too. As for that term, smooth scrolling is confusing and reading about it on the net shows that some talk about literally smooth transitions from top to bottom ( vice versa) in any document, as opposed to jerky movement (jumping 2 or 3 lines with each movement of the wheel of the mouse). Again, to be clear, I believe both Ronald and I are not referring to this feature. We're only concerned with, as is this bug, the cause and effect of directionality of movement with any and all pointer apparatus.
When Apple releases Mac OSX Lion, one of the changes is the switching of the trackpad/mouse scrolling direction. Instead of scrolling the mouse wheel down to move down the page, you have to scroll up to move down. Apple imported this feature from iOS and call[s] this feature “natural scrolling”. Not everyone love[s] this feature, but if you are one of those ... to implement this feature in Ubuntu, here’s how you do it: http://maketecheasier.com/reverse-mouse-scrolling-direction-in-ubuntu/2011/09/16 It's also called reverse scrolling and Apple did not invent it. They just realized it was a natural progression and a way to consolidate with the touch screen (which is where this stems from). It's not arcane or weird. I can just imagine that touchscreen users could be affected by this as well, and since that's the new market everyone (including Canonical) is vying for, it's noteworthy. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/951123 Title: nautilus not natural scrolling To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/951123/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

ubutn2-fan: My comment was not geared towards you but informing Sebastian as to what it was. And you're correct, it does not work. It doesn't work in software center, or update manager, neither. I even reported it as so, see: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/971564 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/971573 Anyway, I've confirmed it to get the ball rolling.
