The key repeat runaway also happens occasionally in urxvt when the CPU is sufficiently loaded, but can be recovered by hitting the key in question again, and doesn't lead to GNOME Shell hanging. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1731420 Title: gnome-shell hangs (goes into key repeat runaway) when key repeat is used on chromium-browser's address bar To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1731420/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1731420] [NEW] gnome-shell hangs (goes into key repeat runaway) when key repeat is used on chromium-browser's address bar
Public bug reported: GNOME Shell running in Wayland completely hangs when the key repeat rate is sufficiently high and used inside Chromium and/or Google Chrome. Then GNOME Shell, at-spi's dbus-daemon, ibus-daemon, and chromium-browser all get stuck at 100% CPU. GNOME Shell's RSS also quickly increases to >2GB and continues climbing. Attempting to kill chromium-browser in a separate TTY either causes one of two things: - gnome-shell, dbus-daemon and ibus-daemon remain at 100% CPU and stuck; or - gnome-shell temporarily recovers, then crashes, taking the entire session with it and returning to the login screen. Steps to reproduce: 1. Set key repeat rates to a high value (these are my actual settings): $ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.keyboard repeat-interval 3 $ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.keyboard repeat true $ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.keyboard delay 180 2. Start chromium-browser 3. Focus the location bar in chromium-browser 4. Press and hold a key (e.g. a) for a few seconds (~10 should do) 5. Observe that gnome-shell probably has hung by this point. If it hasn't, proceed to step 6. 6. Press and hold the backspace button until the location bar has cleared, then continue for another few seconds (~10 seconds should do) This also affected GNOME Shell 3.24, but I was able to reduce the chances of it happening by renicing my chromium processes to +10, thereby giving GNOME Shell a greater chance at the CPU. [Bug 1719287] [NEW] libnss-resolve causes gnome-shell to hang when there's a high rate of getaddrinfo() calls
Public bug reported: I've been running a locust[1]-based web load test on my Ubuntu machine running GNOME Shell (wayland). When starting a new test with a client spawn rate of ~500/s, it issues a huge amount of getaddrinfo() calls. When using libnss-resolve, this causes a huge number of NameOwnerChanged events on the system bus: signal time=1506335482.865950 sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> destination=(null destination) serial=227290 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameOwnerChanged string ":1.190697" string "" string ":1.190697" signal time=1506335482.868601 sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> destination=(null destination) serial=227291 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameOwnerChanged string ":1.190697" string ":1.190697" string "" signal time=1506335483.305614 sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> destination=(null destination) serial=227292 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameOwnerChanged string ":1.190698" string "" string ":1.190698" signal time=1506335483.310873 sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> destination=(null destination) serial=227293 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameOwnerChanged string ":1.190698" string ":1.190698" string "" This in turn causes gnome-shell to spend a huge amount of CPU churning through these events, and if sufficiently starved of CPU (those load testing scripts also consume quite a bit) when interacting with Google Chome, it goes into key repeat runaway (similar to [2]). I'm not completely certain, but there were quite a number of other processes affected by this, and all of them start fighting over CPU time to handle these NameOnwerChanged events. As a workaround, disabling libnss-resolve in /etc/nsswitch.conf and just using the stub resolver fixes things. ** Description changed: I've been using both Ubuntu and dropbox for several years. The bug is 100% reproducible, and it never appeared before 15.04. I also have Copy on my status bar. Clicking on Copy - Open Copy Folder has no problems. The command is nautilus $HOME/Dropbox, not $HOME/Dropbox. And nevermind, I've figured it out. Dropbox launches nautilus using nautilus --no-desktop $HOME/Dropbox, which, in Ubuntu 15.04, turns off the desktop icon rendering. Re: [Bug 1178272] Re: Without pulseaudio, banshee and rhythmbox report jack server is not running or cannot be started and do not play
On Tue, Sep 03, 2013 at 10:37:23PM -, Rüdiger Kupper wrote: Hm, to my knowledge Lubuntu does not come with pulseaudio nor gstreamer. The standard install relies on audio applications that use plain ALSA. Try installing from a Lubuntu live CD. It's certainly hard to choose which (meta-)package should pull in gstreamer1.0-alsa. But some package should include it, otherwise Lubuntu users will end up without it and have the problems described above. It's the link between ALSA and gstreamer, so it could come with one of the packages that deliver ALSA or gstreamer. There's probably no perfect answer here. It could just be included in the standard Lubuntu install, but the Lubuntu people opt for simplicity and use direct ALSA. However, a typical scenario is as follows: You install Lubuntu from a Live CD. You find a selection of slim audio software like audacious. However, you miss your rhythmbox/banshee/whatever. You install rhythmbox/banshee/whatever. It does not work, because there is no gstreamer. You google a bit and learn that the gstreamer plugins come with ubuntu-restricted-extras. You install it, but your rhythmbox/banshee/whatever still does not work, because there is no ALSA sink. You google a bit more but find no answer. You end up writing a bug report on launchpad ;-). Anyway, it might even have helped if gstreamer printed a proper error message (like no sink found) instead of trying to use the jack sink, which is probably the least likely to exist. I don't know where's the best place of doing it, but somehow it should be guaranteed that there is at least one sink present when gstreamer is installed. There is at least one sink present (the jack one). Banshee depends on gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio | gstreamer1.0-audiosink, and the latter package is a virtual package that can be satisfied by any audio sink. In addition, it recommends gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio, so it should be installed by default (but will work even if you tell apt not to install gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio, but in that case you're responsible for choosing another audiosink). The issue here is that gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio is also useless because you don't use pulseaudio. Since this issue is more specific to Lubuntu installations, I'd be tempted to slap gstreamer1.0-alsa onto lubuntu-desktop, but it looks like none of the default media players even use gstreamer. I'll stick lubuntu-meta onto this bug anyway, hopefully someone more acquianted with lubuntu would be able to come up with a better solution. affects ubuntu/lubuntu-meta -- Kind regards, Loong Jin ** Also affects: lubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to rhythmbox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1178272 Title: Without pulseaudio, banshee and rhythmbox report jack server is not running or cannot be started and do not play To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/banshee/+bug/1178272/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

This may mean it's not a GStreamer problem at all, but more a problem of correctly using GStreamer. Nope, this is neither a Banshee nor Rhythmbox problem. Both Banshee and Rhythmbox now use gstreamer1.0, while quodlibet is still using gstreamer0.10, which is why you see the difference here. Gstreamer-using applications require an audio sink to output sound. By default, Ubuntu uses pulseaudio for sound output by default, which is provided by gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio or gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio depending on the gstreamer version you're using. If you remove pulseaudio, that sink fails, and it attempts to fall back onto another sink, which in this case is jack (which also doesn't work because you don't have jackd running). The correct sink to use if you've disabled pulseaudio is probably alsa, which is provided by the gstreamer1.0-alsa package. The overlay scrollbar itself would have to be fixed for that to work. That said, if your mouse is over the overlay scrollbar scrubber thing, you're probably clicking the buttons or dragging it around, rather than using touch scrolling. -- Kind regards, Loong Jin -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to evince in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/981248 Title: Activate smooth scrolling in Evince [SRU] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/evince/+bug/981248/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

On 28/04/2012 09:21, Mattthew Russell wrote: I do mean scrolling with the touchpad, in my case edge scrolling, over the default GTK scrollbar. I haven't tried it with the overlay scrollbar. The result of edge scrolling over the GTK scrollbar in evince is that the document smoothly scrolls, whereas edge scrolling a few pixels to the left over the document makes the document scroll in larger jumps. Ah, that. The scrollbar belongs to the GtkScrolledWindow widget which is what implements the whole smooth scrolling bits. The problem is that the document view which resides inside the GtkScrolledWindow isn't accepting (and forwarding) the smooth scrolling events required for smooth scrolling to work.

Notice that the progress meter on the nautilus icon is still present. 5. Attempt to bring the transfer window back... wait, how? It's worth noting that in Natty, Nautilus put a little indicator into the panel that allowed for reopening the transfer dialog. Public bug reported: affects ubuntu/nautilus After double-clicking on a document/image/video file, there is no feedback that the application is actually starting, until its window finally appears. Re: [Bug 849103] Re: Banshee fails to respond to media shortcut keys.
On 20/10/2011 02:17, Eduardo wrote: I think it is not associated to Banshee. I experience the same bug on Oneiric, but I uninstalled Banshee and use instead Clementine. As I press a multimedia key (not volume), there shows a prohibition sign (see attachment). How media players listen for media keys in Ubuntu (GNOME interface) is done something like this:- X11 Keyboard event → gnome-settings-daemon → Media players (e.g. Banshee). This bug has two problems mentioned, but since Vernon came first, Eduardo should file a new bug. 1) Vernon's issue (the main issue of this bug): Something's obviously going wrong between X11 Keyboard event and gnome-settings-daemon, or something before X11 Keyboard event. On most machines, including all the laptops I have tested, and all of the keyboards I own that have media keys, these work out of the box. In the event that they don't, two things could have happened:- a) Your keyboard is misconfigured and emitting the wrong X11 key events. You can work around this by configuring the shortcuts for volume control and other media keys under System Settings → Keyboard → Shortcuts → Sound and Media. Incidentally, you can use any unused keybinding for this, not just the media keys. b) Your keyboard is just just plain weird and is doing something non-standard, so no X11 events appear when your media keys are pressed. This is probably pretty unlikely As for your USB headphones, unless they're emulating a keyboard for volume up/down, which they probably aren't, that's an unrelated issue, which probably requires some more specific drivers for this. I would expect that headphones would control their own volume independent of the OS though. 2) Eduardo's issue: The prohibition sign shows that there is no media player registered with gnome-settings-daemon. When Banshee or another media player is not started, the logo appears. When Banshee has started, the media keys work. For the media keys to work, you'll need to make sure the Multimedia Keys extension is enabled in Banshee (which registers against gnome-settings-daemon). It's enabled by default, but it would be nice to make sure. In case #1, this is not a problem in Banshee, so I'm reassigning this bug to gnome-settings-daemon. affects ubuntu/banshee status invalid affects ubuntu/gnome-settings-daemon status new Case #2 should go into a new bug report, if it really turns out to be a bug. [Bug 825874] Re: Thinkpad T61 keyboard volume control buttons badly programmed
I think the behaviour for this has changed in Ubuntu 10.10, so that volume up pushes the volume up from 0 instead. On the other hand, it sounds like your mute button isn't registering a keypress when the volume is muted, hence not allowing you to unmute it. Could you run xev in a terminal, and in the window that appears, press Mute twice in succession, then post the output here. Either way, the volume that is being changed is the global machine volume, rather than Banshee's volume (Banshee has nothing to do with the volume keys), so I'm changing the package to gnome-settings-daemon temporarily (I believe that's what handles the volume keys) ** Changed in: banshee (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete ** Package changed: banshee (Ubuntu) = gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/825874 Title: Thinkpad T61 keyboard volume control buttons badly programmed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/825874/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 808153] Re: Can no longer suspend
Gnome Power Manager is the package responsible for listening to the power menu and poking DeviceKit Power which in turn calls pm-suspend.
