[Bug 1014385] Re: Can't select misc-fixed-semicondensed aka 6x13 font

2013-05-20 Thread Chris Bainbridge
http://ptspts.blogspot.co.uk/2010/06/how-to-enable-bitmap-fonts-on-
ubuntu.html Using the fixedsc font and conf file from that page worked
for me. Note The Fixed (6x13) had to be renamed to FixedSC, because the
original 6x13 font has the tag semicondensed, which makes it impossible
to select in the GNOME font selection dialog (or in any fontconfig-based
app). - might this be the issue?

@Julián the only problem is that gnome-keyring won't actually work (see
comment #27), but if you don't use it, and none of the apps you use rely
on it, then that won't affect you.

2012-10-27 Thread Chris Bainbridge
I also confirm that updating to xkb-data-2.5-1ubuntu1.4 does not fix
this issue.

There are fixes listed for two packages here, should there be an
updated libgtk2.0-0 or some other package in precise-proposed? Or is the
fix in xkb-data alone?

[Bug 932177] Re: WARNING: gnome-keyring:: couldn't connect to PKCS11

2012-05-26 Thread Chris Bainbridge
I was interested in the correct solution rather than the workaround of
manually reverting the changes to gnome-keyring's /etc/ config. I asked
Guido Berhoerster, and he said:

if you are not running gnome-session then gnome-keyring-daemon cannot
be correctly initialized through the XDG autostart mechanism because the
necessary environment variables cannot be set for your session (see my
detailed explanation at
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=710038#c2). So what that
basically means is that whether you initialize gnome-keyring through XDG
autostart or not does not make any difference outside GNOME because it
will be inaccessible from your session.

In order to use gnome-keyring with Xfce you need to enable GNOME
compatibility mode, if you use something else you need to modify your
session wrapper so that it calls gnome-keyring-daemon --start, reads
its output and exports the printed environment variables. That assumes
of course that gnome-keyring-daemon has been correctly started and
unlocked via PAM.

...starting with openSUSE 12.2 gnome-keyring will be installed and
enabled by default. It is also possible to use gnome-keyring with Xfce
on openSUSE 12.1 since we patch xfce4-session to avoid undesirable side
effects of GNOME compat mode in Xfce 4.8
(https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8014#c0), however GNOME
compatibility mode needs to be enabled manually.

Making it work is relatively simple starting with Xfce 4.10 you just
need to follow https://live.gnome.org/GnomeKeyring/Pam and enable GNOME
compat mode.

For Xfce 4.8 it is more complicated because xfce4-session would need to
be patched with backports of commit
0fea8c64bfc32915d9e397e7029de150167a737d and
67b772364c9e9a7ea9cc4dafb219902c6c8b074a in order to make GNOME compat
mode usable.

[Bug 932177] Re: WARNING: gnome-keyring:: couldn't connect to PKCS11

2012-05-26 Thread Chris Bainbridge
Another comment from Guido regarding modifying the /etc/ autostart
files:

What happens is that if gnome-keyring components are not initialized
through XDG autostart any more they will be DBus-activated (see
https://live.gnome.org/GnomeKeyring/RunningDaemon). So when they start
adding back the autostart files for them the warnings will disappear
because there will be no DBus-activation but the SSH/GPG components will
not magically start working outside GNOME. So the only bug here is that
these people are trying to use GNOME keyring without initializing it
properly using the methods I've described before.

[Bug 925046] [NEW] gnome-control-center sound forgets chosen preferred input device

2012-02-01 Thread Chris Bainbridge
Public bug reported:

I have two USB audio input devices: sound card and webcam

I always want to use the webcam for audio input

In gnome-control-center I go to Input tab and under Choose a device
for sound input: I select Webcam C270 Analogue Mono

This works but is temporary. When webcam is unplugged and reconnected
the sound card input becomes selected. Worse, when the system is
rebooted, the sound card again becomes selected. There appears to be no
way to always prefer the webcam audio input.

object = l-data;
if (g_strcmp0 (object-id, id) == 0)
break;
}

free_object_to_load (object);
}

if (panel_objects_loading == NULL  panel_objects_to_load == NULL)

}

free_object_to_load (object) gets called only 5 lines before strcmp on
the same object.

[Bug 833595] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGFPE in backlight_get_percentage()

2011-09-07 Thread Chris Bainbridge
I think Rodrigo was asking for someone to run those commands on real
hardware. If you run in a VM it is unlikely that a backlight will be
present - afaik VirtualBox/QEMU do not emulate a backlight. It would be
poor isolation if a guest VM going to LCD standby took down the host
LCD.

The issue does not appear on XDMCP sessions from Lucid-Lucid. It does
appear on sessions from Debian Lenny-Lucid. Maybe there is some
incompatibility between xorg 7.5 and 7.3.

[Bug 593318] [NEW] gnome-screensaver fails in XDMCP session

2010-06-13 Thread Chris Bainbridge
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

Run a gnome session over XDMCP remote desktop.
Leave session for 5 minutes.
gnome-screensaver kicks in.
On client there is no evidence that gnome-screensaver is running - the previous
desktop is displayed, and there is no screensaver. There is no way to kill the
screensaver apart from logging in to the XDMCP server and actually doing
`killall gnome-screensaver`.

Confirmed with latest gnome on amd64 lucid.

[Bug 555709] Re: Laptop display maximum dim at startup

2010-05-17 Thread Chris Bainbridge
Same here. Thinkpad T42p with ATI Radeon FireGL T2. Display goes dim
after a few minutes. Can be brightened again using the fn-home key
combination.

Same as Memartin: switching to a console with ctrl-alt-f1 then switching
back with ctrl-alt-f7 results in the screen being dimmed.

Using KDE desktop. This worked fine in Karmic.

[Bug 555709] Re: Laptop display maximum dim at startup

2010-05-17 Thread Chris Bainbridge
Using Gnome the display does not dim on boot, and ctrl-alt-f1 ctrl-
alt-f7 does not dim the screen. Using KDE it does. The KDE battery
monitor screen brightness slider does not work - the brightness always
gets set to the lowest setting. So it looks like this may be a
powerdevil bug (at least, for myself and the other KDE users reporting
here).  ( https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=173930 and
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=173930 may be relevant upstream
reports).

[Bug 243229] Re: Video plays really slow

2009-06-17 Thread Chris Bainbridge
I had the same problem, incredibly slow playback in totem. I had two
apps loaded which both use xine backends (note I wasn't trying to play
them both at the same time, just had them loaded), totem was using the
xine backend to play video, and amarok was using xine for audio. So I
looked in ~/.xine/config and tried setting audio.driver:pulseaudio, it
worked - not only can both apps be loaded simultaneously, I can even
play both at the same time.

[Bug 306310] Re: Resume (from memory) goes back to sleep automatically

2009-02-02 Thread Chris Bainbridge
I also get two resume cycles rather than three when acpid is stopped.

With acpid running I got:
$ xev | sed -n 's/^.*state \([0-9].*\), keycode *\([0-9]\+\) *\(.*\),
.*$/keycode \2 = \3, state = \1/p'

keycode 150 = (keysym 0x1008ff2f, XF86Sleep), state = 0x0

With it stopped I get:
keycode 150 = (keysym 0x1008ff2f, XF86Sleep), state = 0x0
keycode 150 = (keysym 0x1008ff2f, XF86Sleep), state = 0x0

I wonder if it is possible that these two events (press and release)
both get mapped onto XF86Sleep keycode events, generating two suspend

[Bug 306310] Re: Resume (from memory) goes back to sleep automatically

2009-01-31 Thread Chris Bainbridge
This also occurs in KDE with kpowersave on Thinkpad T42p in both
Intrepid and Jaunty. It does not occur when selecting Suspend in
Shutdown menu, only when using fn-f4 hotkey.

I thought it might be something to do with ACPI event processing
discussed in bug 267682 ie. the suspend event gets delivered and
processed more than once by different handlers, but I haven't confirmed
this.
