[Bug 578748] Re: Remove notification icon redundancy in Ubuntu 10.04

2010-05-25 Thread Chris Conway
I think I've figured this out. Previously, I did not have the Indicator
Applet on my Panel (it was not added on upgrade Lucid). When I add the
Indicator Applet to the Panel, the redundant Empathy icon disappears and
is replaced by the Messaging Menu, as in the attached. (The Indicator
Applet also takes over the Rhythmbox icon and leaves all the "old-style"
application icons in the Notification Area.)

[Bug 578748] Re: Remove notification icon redundancy in Ubuntu 10.04

2010-05-25 Thread Chris Conway
I think I'm seeing the same behavior, so let me try to fill in the
details. I upgraded to Lucid last week and I have empathy
v2.30.1-0ubuntu1 and indicator-me v0.2.6-0ubuntu1. My panel indicator
area looks like the attached: the MeMenu has an icon indicating my
availability on the right-hand side and Empathy has an icon with an
identical appearance on the left-hand side. The icons behave differently
when clicked (bringing up the MeMenu and activating the Empathy window,
respectively), but as status indicators they are redundant.

By default, I would expect the Empathy icon to go away and for the
functionality it exposes to be folded into the MeMenu somehow. I would
also expect there to be a configuration option to turn off the Empathy
notification icon (if I understand correctly, this is required by the
status menu design guidelines:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CustomStatusMenuDesignGuidelines).

[Bug 425411] Re: Computer suspends immediately after resuming if power is unplugged while suspended

2010-02-10 Thread Chris Conway
Paul, the bug is (thought to be) fixed in devicekit version 011-1ubuntu2
and gnome-power-manager version 2.28.1-0ubuntu1.3, both available in
karmic-updates. Do you have the karmic-updates repository enabled? If
so, you should post a follow-up more details on your system and the
output from "gnome-power-manager --verbose" on a suspend, resume, re-
suspend cycle.

[Bug 155438] Re: Compiz - workspace switcher shrinks and workspaces do not work corectly

2009-04-20 Thread Chris Conway
I have the same issue as Michal on Jaunty: each square on the workspace
switcher represents a "desktop" with four "workspaces"; the desktops are
reachable by clicking on the switcher whereas the workspaces are
reachable by keyboard shortcuts. The behavior is completely different
from that of the workspace switcher with "Visual Effects: Normal".

I get this behavior with
/apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/number_of_desktops set to both 1
and 4.

[Bug 155438] Re: Compiz - workspace switcher shrinks and workspaces do not work corectly

2009-02-23 Thread Chris Conway
I am having this issue. I asked about it in the Forums (here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1074789) and got no response.

With "Visual Effects: None", the Workspace Switcher Preferences has the
selections:
 - "Show only the current workspace" or "Show all the workspaces in N rows",
and
 - "Number of workspaces"
I have 4 workspaces set up to be shown in 2 rows. I get a 2x2 display in the
Workspace Switcher, with 4 active workspaces.

If I switch to "Visual Effects: Normal", the Workspace Switcher Preferences
window changes to offer only:
 - "Number of rows"
 - "Number of columns"
The default is 4 columns and 1 row. I get a 2x4 display in the Workspace
Switcher, with the upper 1x4 active and the lower 1x4 unused.

If I switch it to 2 columns, 2 rows, as I had it previously, I get a
display that is sized for 4x2 in the Workspace Switcher, where the upper
2x2 is active and the lower 2x2 is unused (see attached image).

I haven't found a way to configure my desktop with "Visual Effects:
Normal" or "Advanced" such that the Workspace Switcher displays the
workspaces without an unused bottom half.

I am running Intrepid, with gnome-panel 1:2.24.1-0ubuntu2.1 and compiz
1:0.7.8-0ubuntu4.1.

[Bug 156647] Re: Evince hangs on showing print dialog

2007-11-23 Thread Chris Conway
I am also having this issue. Attached is a backtrace with debug symbols
from libgtk. Beyond that, I can trace the problem... It looks like the
crash may be cause be the current default printer being unavailable.
I.e., I printed at home, then went to work, then evince started
crashing; maybe it's trying to connect to my home printer?

[Bug 157797] Re: evince crashes while trying to print

2007-11-20 Thread Chris Conway
I am having the same problem. Clicking "File -> Print" or pressing
Ctrl-P causes evince to freeze. It stops accepting input and stops
refreshing its own window. Sometimes the Print dialog appears (also
frozen) and sometimes it doesn't. This started only in the last few days
and is consistent across all PDFs and Postscript files, including files
I have previously printed successfully. I recently upgraded libpoppler
and libcairo via Software Update. I will be happy to provide a GDB dump
if anyone can tell me how to trap a "frozen" rather than a "crashed"
backtrace.

[Bug 85420] Re: gnome-cups-manager settings ignored

2007-05-03 Thread Chris Conway
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 67164 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/67164

I have upgraded to feisty and I am still having this problem. I do not
believe this is really a duplicate of #67164, which is supposedly fixed.
My problem is *not* that printer dialog settings are ignored on print;
my problem is that the global printer settings in gnome-cups-manager are
ignored in the evince Print dialog. I.e., I have to manually select
"Double-sided printing: Long Edge (standard)" every time I print;
however, when I select it, it does in fact print as double-sided.

The source of the problem seems to be that there are *two* printer
configuration managers in Ubuntu/Gnome: the gnome-cups-manager and
system-config-printer. I didn't have system-config-printer installed
until today. Changing the double-sided print settings in system-config-
printer works; changing them in gnome-cups-manager does not. Both
utilities are listed in System -> Administration under "Printing".

My package versions are now:

evince 0.8.1-0ubuntu1
gnome-cups-manager 0.31-3ubuntu5
python-cups (1.9.19-0ubuntu1)
system-config-printer (0.7.62-0ubuntu1)

[Bug 85420] Re: gnome-cups-manager settings ignored

2007-02-16 Thread Chris Conway
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 67164 ***

I can't confirm or deny whether this is a legitimate dupe---I'm not
using feisty and an attempt to build the backport of evince/gtk+2.0
failed, so I don't know if the patch for the other bug resolves my
problem---but I will note that my problem is not implied by the other
bug report. As I understand bug #67164, options chosen in the Print
dialog are ignored when the job is sent to the printer. In my case,
defaults chosen in gnome-cups-manager are ignored in the Print dialog.
If I change the options in the Print dialog, the job will print as
desired.

I have a Postscript printer which is set as default in gnome-cups-
