Since the gnome-session starts gnome processes, how can it not be
related to gnome?

I have used Arch Linux with the 2.6.22 kernel and it logged in in 20
seconds, about 10 seconds less than edgy and even less than gutsy.

Removing compiz in ubuntu does not make a difference.

2007-12-03 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
I have tried to strace gnome-session as stated in
http://live.gnome.org/GnomePerformance/LoginTime

The session died quickly, so this approach didn't wok.

I added a new session type in /usr/share/xsessions/ and replaced 'gnome-
session' with 'strace -ttt -f -o /tmp/login.strace /usr/X11R6/bin/gnome-
session'

This works fine but strace keeps running even after login. If you kill
strace, then you'll get logged out and have a nice log file in
/tmp/login.strace

2007-11-13 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
Here is a strace of nautilus while starting up.

I started strace manually after logging in in gdm, so it may not be
totally complete.

Anyway, it seems there are lot of files that nautilus is opening but are
not there. This includes locale stuff and icons.

I'm not sure if this is causing the slow down. Definitely it does not
make it faster.

No, I'm not using deskbar, it is simply too slow to load.

Also, it does not make sense to compare your load times with mine, since

I'm wondering why the importance is set to Low, when this affects a lot

[Bug 134306] gnome-search-tool needs integration with indexer (tracker, beagle)

2007-08-23 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

Since gutsy now includes tracker by default, I would suggest some work
to be done to integrate indexers better in Ubuntu.

Currently, you can go to Places-Search for files and
Applications-Accessories-Tracker Search Tool.

The user has no way of knowing what the difference between these tools
are.

I would suggest that Search for files be replaced with Search.

This tool could be either gnome-search-tool or tracker search tool.
However, to integrate it properly:

* gnome-search-tool should include a Indexed option to search using an
indexer like tracker or beagle
* OR tracker-search-tool should include an option to search non-indexed
locations

The latter is needed if the user wants to search a non-indexed location.

I'm not sure that Indexed is the best word to . Maybe other
suggestions are better.

[Bug 134055] metadata tile from tracker should be integrated

Binary package hint: nautilus

This bug is related to

The metadata tile from tracker-search-tool should be integrated into
nautilus so the user can view metadata on selected objects.

Well, I'm not sure if it is the same.

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=135901

mentions a drop down list. I've commented on that upstream bug to
clarify it is really the same.

[Bug 49608] Re: Incorperate Beagle searching into GtkFileChooser

2006-10-13 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
I think it would be best if this would only be enabled if beagle is
installed.

It is not okay to require beagle because systems with 256 MB of RAM will
suffer. I've got one, so I know.

I agree that beagle is cool and edgy+1 would really benefit of
integrated search for systems that are more modern than mine.

beagle.h is included in the beagle-dev package (beagle-dev:
usr/include/libbeagle/beagle/beagle.h). Which package is then required:
beagle or libbeagle0?

The patches seem Beagle-centric (BeagleHit etc.).

Maybe it would be best to wait for Gnome to make a solution for both
tracker and Beagle.

You can find a newer patch here:

fakeroot alien that and look for gtk2-filechooser-new-features.diff

It is a newer patch.

I would like to point you to the novell bugzilla entry but novell has

[Bug 35597] Re: Brother HL-2030 unable to print

2006-04-06 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
Hi,

It seems that the drivers from Brothers site are not working.

However, if I use System-Administration-Printing and setup the printer from
there, it works.

It uses the hl1250 driver and appears as a HL-2060 printer.

Maybe this should be documented somewhere?

When I install the printer it shows up in gnome-cups-manager but when I

failed.

[Bug 31139] Add to panel should give a message when successful

Using dapper.

The Add to panel program has changed, so it does not quit when Add

This means, that the user has to scan the screen to see if the applet
really has been added.

In my opinion, this is not good for the user.

Please add a message that the applet has been successfully added. A
