[Bug 63090] Re: do not eject all USB/Firewire devices

2007-06-08 Thread Dana Olson
This is still an issue, and there are numerous bug reports and
complaints in the forums. This is a pretty major bug, and yes it is a
regression. It has been 8 months with still no fix in place.

[Bug 56478] gnome-panel dies when screenreader is enabled and...

2006-10-09 Thread Dana Olson
Public bug reported:

OK, in Dapper, if I enable the Screenreader option in the Assistive
Technology Preferences, gnome-panel (and epiphany) die unexpectedly at
certain times.

I can reproduce this by doing the following:
- Log on to GNOME desktop.
- Close Gnoppernicus (optional, doesn't change anything).
- Hit ALT+F2, type in xcalc or vncviewer and hit Enter.
- gnome-panel crashes.

Disabling the Screenreader and restarting GNOME shows this issue
disappears.

The desired behavior is that gnome-panel does not crash.

The other issue is that sometimes Epiphany just crashes too, but doesn't
if Screenreader is disabled.

[Bug 61007] moving panel launcher erases details

2006-09-18 Thread Dana Olson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I right-clicked on my panel, added a launcher to launch vncviewer, set
and icon and a name.

Then I clicked it and dragged it to reposition it on my panel. After
letting go of the mouse button, the icon turns into the default question
mark icon.

Right clicking on it and going to the properties of the launcher reveal
that the command, comment, icon, and name have all been wiped.

To make sure I was not imagining this, I tried again with a launcher for
Azureus, and it happened again.

I have been turning off my PC nightly during the summer because it

install Edgy very soon at home (already using it at work). If you want
to close this bug, I can always open a new one later on, or if possible

[Bug 51837] renaming file losing focus while video thumbnails appear

2006-07-04 Thread Dana Olson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When I go into a folder with several images or videos, the thumbnailer
is doing its job generating thumbnails to preview the files. But when
I try to rename a file, the focus is shifted away from the filename
field to nothing. This often results in files with no meaningful name,
and is very frustrating to try and rename a file under GNOME.

The only solution is to sit there and wait for every thumbnail to finish
being generated or to turn off file previews, but this is not a solution
that fixes the focus automatically shifting away from the renaming of
the file.

browse files on the remote system, nothing happens after double-clicking
on the icon if the host identification has changed since the time that
the entry was added.

[Bug 33315] Re: Tooltip for logout applet is misleading

2006-05-23 Thread Dana Olson
Am I wrong in thinking that in Windows you have a Log Out option and
that provides a similar dialog with several other options? If that is
the case, then there are much bigger issues that new users have with
Windows than the log out menu option.

Changing it to something else like Stop Session or Leave Computer or
whatever is going to confuse even experienced Windows users.

I think it is fine the way it is now, as far as the option text goes,
with the tooltip needing to be changed (I haven't done my daily update
yet, so it might not still say what it says).

Log out username.. isn't really confusing, and I think it is a better
option than any others suggested. Familiarity will go a long way for
users coming from the other side too.

[Bug 38694] Re: No XChat in Dapper

2006-05-07 Thread Dana Olson
Sometimes developers don't know what is best for their user base.

But in this instance, I think the decision is fine.

Xchat-gnome has issues in itself (removing features such as the clear chat
buffer option, meaning I can't hit CTRL+L as I could before, and can in Gaim).
I still use it currently despite that, but I can install it afterwords if I
want. Or I can install Xchat if I want to. Or anything else for that matter.

It's really not hard to install an IRC client if you need one more robust than
Gaim. I won't be using Gaim for IRC, and I won't be using the Live Support
option from the help menu. So, the decision doesn't affect me in any way, aside
from now, removing the Xchat-gnome app doesn't remove ubuntu-desktop with it.
So that's a good thing.

For new users - the ones who will be most likely to use that menu option -
using Gaim is a good option, and I think that those who know no better - don't
even know what IRC is - will appreciate the apparent integration of such a help
system into their MSN/Yahoo/AIM client.

[Bug 35702] Re: evolution can't sign email after running for a long time

2006-04-07 Thread Dana Olson
I should note that the system gets unresponsive and requires I reset the power
if Evolution is left open very long. I have been closing Evolution down
periodically, and this behaviour has disappeared (but not a solution). See the
attached log file from my last note, and you can see that when left running,
Evolution gets very memory intensive, so much to the point that all of my RAM
and swap are used and I can't even do anything on my system - not even close
Evolution to try and free up the memory.

Am I the only one who can replicate this behaviour?

[Bug 32457] Screensaver activates while playing a game

2006-03-25 Thread Dana Olson
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32457

Comment:
Loic, all the games I tested that activated the screensaver while playing were
SDL games that used the keyboard only. Some of them would prevent the
screensaver from coming on if you moved the mouse, but not all of them. (moving
the mouse in games that do not require it is not any more of a solution than
moving the mouse every 9 minutes while watching a movie).

I no longer have the time to file bugs on every single game as I thought I
would, but because the ones I did test were all using SDL, I think the better
option is indeed to file this single bug under SDL, and add something to the
keyboard handler routine or so.

Note that this would also have the benefit of fixing commercial games (which
are NOT going to be fixed by having their own bugs opened in this bug tracker)
such as Professor Fizzwizzle, which is also on the list of games that use SDL
and do not use the mouse and do not prevent the screensaver from activating.

Reporting bugs on 25-30 games individually is going to substantially increase
open bug reports, email traffic, and the Ubuntu-debian delta. I think we ought
to take the efficient route. Getting one patch for SDL accepted upstream will
likely be much easier than 25-30 different games. And commercial games on top
of that.

[Bug 32457] Screensaver activates while playing SDL games

2006-03-25 Thread Dana Olson
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32457

Summary changed to:
Screensaver activates while playing SDL games
Description changed to:
I am running a current Dapper as of 22-Feb-06 07:00:00 -0500

I started playing a game, Frozen Bubble, and I was doing rather
well, and then the screensaver came on. I couldn't get it to go away
without hitting escape several times, exiting Frozen Bubble, losing
my progress in the game.

---

UPDATED DESCRIPTION:

The screensaver activates with many (perhaps all?) SDL games that do
not require mouse input to play. Some of these games can remove the
screensaver upon moving the mouse, but not all of them, and this is
not a solution.

It also affects commercial games such as Professor Fizzwizzle that
use SDL.

If a patch can be added to libsdl, then this should fix all games
and apps that use it, avoiding individual patches for every affected
game.

The patch could go in the keyboard handling routine, although if
there's a better place in the code to put it, it might be better to
avoid launching the screensaver at all when an SDL game is running.

[Bug 32457] Screensaver activates while playing a game

2006-03-06 Thread Dana Olson
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32457

Task: ubuntu gnome-screensaver
 Status: Unconfirmed = Confirmed

Comment:
I took the time to register and report this bug upstream, as dholbach suggested
on IRC, and just as I suspected, they closed it saying it isn't a bug.

BUT, the purpose of a screensaver is not to mess up end users who are playing
games or watching movies. Its purpose is to do two basic things:

1) Allow the screen to be locked while being temporarily away from the PC
2) To have something constantly moving on the screen (or alternately have a
blank screen), to avoid burn-in images.

If I am watching a movie or playing a game, I am not going to be temporarily
away from the PC, and locking the screen is not something I will want to do, so
#1 is not needed.

If I am playing a game or watching a movie, then the screen is constantly
changing, and therefore I am avoiding burn-in images, nullifying #2.

I am not the only one who found this functionality to be a pain, and I think
that the upstream attitude of it should be changed in every other application
is wrong.

Xscreensaver used to work just fine, and I think that given the circumstances,
it should remain default in Dapper, until either upstream changes their tune,
or every other application (which may or may not be actively maintianed)
modifies all of their applications to work around a new screensaver design.

The alternative is to leave gnome-screensaver as default and deal with many
unsatisfied and annoyed users.
