[Bug 656466] Re: [Intel Eaglelake HDMI] 10.10rc line in problem with gnome-volume-control

2010-10-07 Thread Daniel T Chen
I'm not entirely certain this is a g-v-c issue, actually. The problem
seems to stem in part from the fact that the driver reveals a Playback
cap for your Line - perhaps this is inappropriately named and should
be Line-In, which is rather doubtful, but you didn't paste the rest of
your amixer output.

This pulseaudio behavior is based on consolekit, i.e., the active seat
has permission to access the sound device. When a user switches to a
getty instance but has not completed the login, that tty is not listed
as an active seat.

[Bug 528524] Re: Sound not working in all apps on dove

2010-03-28 Thread Daniel T Chen
Li Li, it is unnecessary (and by and large incorrect; see bug 433654) to
add one's user(s) to the audio group when PA is used.

So, the question becomes whether there is a speex task in addition or
whether this issue is solely in the realm of compile-time for speex.

Certainly the 'trivial' resampler is not as good as the 'speex-fixed-1'.
If you use 'speex-fixed-1' instead of 'speex-float-1', is this issue
resolved?

[Bug 528524] Re: Sound not working in all apps on dove

2010-03-22 Thread Daniel T Chen
Paul can correct me if I misremember, but our conversation in #ubuntu-
bugs a couple/few weeks ago briefly was:

1) PA's configured sampling rate of 44100 Hz (in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf via the
default-sample-rate parameter) does not always match the input file's,
resulting in inaudible audio, which seems to be corroborated by Paul's and
Saeed's comments in 5 and 14, respectively;
2) ALSA[-lib]'s plughw is always audible regardless of the input file's.

To summarise: I think we can eliminate ALSA[-lib] as the culprit, since
plughw appears to Do The Right Thing. The next thing to test is whether
PA's default-sample-rate should be changed to 48000.

At this point we need straces.

On Mar 22, 2010 5:51 PM, Paul Larson paul.lar...@canonical.com
wrote:

I changed default-sample-rate to 48000, logged out/in, and retested.
Everything still seemed the same though. 48kHz samples would play,
anything else would not.

I also tried this:
speaker-test -t sine -r 48000 - plays
speaker-test -t sine -r 44100 - doesn't play

If I run the same two commands with sudo, they BOTH play just fine.

I can confirm this with today's daily-live desktop. I then installed
pavucontrol, unlocked the streams in the Playback tab, and successfully
manipulated the separate channel volumes.

Moving from pulseaudio, which Does The Right Thing, to gnome-media.

Re: [Bug 203158] Re: libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio must be installed as default by libsdl1.2debian

2010-01-18 Thread Daniel T Chen
When was the change made to remove libsdl1.2 from the live cd? At
least as of the manifests for the 13 Jan (Ubuntu) Lucid/10.04
daily-live discs, libsdl1.2debian and libsdl1.2debian-alsa are still
present.

For the sake of disc space use (or at least until we can confirm that
libsdl1.2 /has/ been removed from a respun Lucid daily-live), I think
it's better if we prefer -pulseaudio to -all in the alternate list. In
fact, I don't see a point now to change that since I've changed the
seeds (for ubuntu.lucid, kubuntu.lucid, xubuntu.lucid).

Hold your horses, sheesh. For Lucid this bug is being resolved by
explicitly seeding the proper alternate of libsdl1.2debian in the
various *ubuntu-desktop seeds.

2009-10-26 Thread Daniel T Chen
Please allow me to reiterate that this symptom is not a PulseAudio bug
but a hardware one that can be worked around in the sound driver,
linux (with varying degrees of success for given hardware). The fact
that we have to work around it in PulseAudio (either by passing
ignore_dB=1 to module-udev* or by changing sections in the PA
profiles) is a clear indication of hardware failing to Do The Right
Thing.

Err, no, that's a driver (linux bug) issue with resume, apparently.
It's best to file a separate bug using ubuntu-bug alsa-base.

Gals/Guys, please do not use this bug report as a means to spew
vitriolic bits. This bug report has a clear description, has clearly
identified Karmic tasks, and has clear progress indicators for those
tasks. In other words, it is narrow in scope, we know what's broken,
and we're fixing them.

Please use the ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list to vent, and/or file
a separate bug report. Thanks!

[Bug 438065] Re: Karmic: DVDs cannot be mounted

2009-10-04 Thread Daniel T Chen
2.6.31.1 mainline also exhibits this symptom. 2.6.32 does not exhibit
this symptom.

On my hardware, reverting brasero and libbrasero-media0 to
2.27.92-0ubuntu2 indeed fixes the symptom regardless whether 2.6.31.1
or 2.6.32 is used.

At this point it's pretty safe to say that there _may_ be some
additional error handling needed in drivers/scsi/*, but it's more
probable that brasero should be fixed. Normally unaligned transfers are
caused by higher layers, which seems to be the case here. Also, no
(pure) Kubuntu users are experiencing this issue, since brasero isn't
used.

result is that I can use only low volume with my karmic system, unlike in
 Jaunty and below.

This is a well-known change that really isn't PA's fault; it's really
the OEM's but unfortunately affects everyone else downstream in the
supply chain.

See

It will not ship in Karmic final, because it will break a far larger

[Bug 202089] Re: Pulseaudio is blocking normal sound after resume

2009-04-24 Thread Daniel T Chen
** Description changed:

- SRU information follows:
+ jaunty SRU information follows:
+
+ Note that this SRU involves two separate bugs, this one and bug 326532.
+
+ Impact: Users who experience problems with PulseAudio often kill it
+ (using pulseaudio -k or killall pulseaudio, the latter of which is
+ more reliable). Jaunty's current pm-utils sleep hook looks for the
+ session-invoked command line. Users who invoke pulseaudio manually,
+ after killing it, with pulseaudio -D (or other variants) do not have
+ this session-invoked command line, and thus, when they suspend to ram or
+ disk, the pm-utils sleep hook does not suspend their pulseaudio daemons.
+
+ Note that the use case of killing the pulseaudio daemon and allowing it
+ to autospawn afterward is unaffected; jaunty's existing pm-utils sleep
+ hook correctly reaps all pulseaudio instances. This SRU only applies to
+ manually invoked pulseaudio -D, pulseaudio -vvv, etc.
+
+ Resolution: Modify the pm-utils sleep hook to correctly reap all
+ pulseaudio instances regardless of pulseaudio invocation command line.
+
+ SRU debdiff:
+
+ TEST CASE: Boot into a jaunty install. In a Terminal, issue killall
+ pulseaudio;pulseaudio -D. Suspend to ram, then resume. Note the
+ inaudible audio from PulseAudio.
+
+ Regression potential: No regressions have been identified in production.
+ --
+ old intrepid SRU information follows:

Impact: A portion of users with a default or updated (intrepid-updates)
Ubuntu 8.10 install experience inaudible audio from PulseAudio after
resuming from suspend-to-ram. This symptom is due to the PulseAudio
daemon not having received proper notification to suspend clients and
  release the sound device(s).

Resolution: Configure users' pulseaudio daemons to suspend prior to
suspending to ram and to resume after resuming. This sequence is
accomplished via a pm-utils sleep hook. The corresponding fixed version
  (0.9.13-2ubuntu3) is available in jaunty.

  SRU debdiff:
  http://launchpadlibrarian.net/20316781/pulseaudio_0.9.10-2ubuntu9.2.debdiff

TEST CASE: Boot into a default or updated (intrepid-updates) Ubuntu 8.10
install. Suspend to ram, then resume. Note the inaudible audio from
  PulseAudio.

Regression potential: No regressions have been identified in production.

  Background information follows:

  Binary package hint: pulseaudio

   aplay squish.au
Sonando Audio Sparc 'squish.au' : Mu-Law, Ratio 8000 Hz, Mono

  [Suspend to Ram/Resume]

   aplay squish.au
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:874:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
aplay: main:546: error al abrir audio: Dispositivo ó recurso ocupado

Then you need to killall pulseaudio for apps that use pcm starts working
again.
(Question: How you can stop/start/restart pulseudio? In Ubuntu
/etc/init.d/pulseaudio script is disabled)

If you need more information, please let me know.

  Thx.

Changes made to debian/01PulseAudio in the previous upload
(1:0.9.14-0ubuntu20) work for the common case where the user has not
manually killed the pulseaudio daemon. If, however, the user has killed
the pulseaudio daemon, the existing check fails to pick up the new
autospawned instance. Fix this corner case by harvesting all instances
of pulseaudio.
