[Bug 332348] Re: Display icon indication for mobile/web client/bot/etc IM users

2010-10-08 Thread Danny Piccirillo
People are giving feedback to this issue. Some developers would be
interested in that.

In response to this, i'm just going to have to quote exactly what you said,
Also another frustrated user...
I've switched to Pidgin for the time being, but i really like Empathy for more
reasons, but I just can't switch till this is fixed...
Its pure logic guys... get this implemented! Its been A YEAR AND A HALF!

You even busted out the all-caps. Tell me what is valuable in that? Tell
me what kind of developer needs to be told to drop whatever else they
are working on to fix this instead. Did you even read the link? Please
don't even continue reading this if you haven't.

(It seems like it should be able to qualify as a Papercut.)

Omer has already responded to that one.

And this bug report has a whole 7 comments in the extremely long time
it's been open.

And the developers, you can be sure, are tracking more than this one
bug, so spamming them with a me too comment does no good. It isn't
about this one post, it's about this trend that has been getting worse
and worse, where it becomes harder to fix bug because of having to sort
through comments like this that add *no* value whatsoever. You can
respond to me privately if you wish to continue this discussion.

[Bug 259044] Re: Support for multiplexed audio (MT9 functionality)

2010-03-26 Thread Danny Piccirillo
This is mostly an interface problem--

Example:

A video file might have multiple language tracks. In totem, you can
select which track to play.

Just imagine those language tracks, were something else-- instrument
tracks, for example (violin, piano)-- and were meant to be played
together. An interface would be needed to be able to select which ones
to play, and at what volumes.

[Bug 327872] Re: Broken support for AVCHD (MTS/M2TS)

2010-02-19 Thread Danny Piccirillo
Updated title and description for clarity

** Description changed:

- AVCHD is the de facto standard for HDV (high definition video)
- camcorders and as such, Ubuntu users need a way to easily play, edit and
- see thumbnails of videos created.
+ MPEG transport stream (MPEG-TS) is used for HDV and AVCHD camcorders and
+ as such, Linux users need a way to easily play, edit and see thumbnails
+ of these videos. Video editing on Linux can't get very far when the de
+ facto standard for high-definition video isn't well-supported,
+ especially as more and more cameras are HD out of the box, and the
+ prices for such camcorders are falling.

Most of the problem seems to be from the MPEG-TS demuxer in GStreamer
[mpegtsdemux] which needs to be fixed or rewritten to support random
  access better, among other things.

[Bug 327872] Re: Broken support for AVCHD (MTS/M2TS)

2010-01-30 Thread Danny Piccirillo
** Summary changed:

- Missing support for AVCHD (MTS/M2TS)
+ Broken support for AVCHD (MTS/M2TS)

** Description changed:

- I suppose really this is more of a feature request ...
+ AVCHD is the de facto standard for HDV (high definition video)
+ camcorders and as such, Ubuntu users need a way to easily play, edit and
+ see thumbnails of videos created.

- Hi Def video formats (i.e., MTS) are quickly becoming the de facto
- standard for video camcorders and as such, Ubuntu users need a way to
- play, edit and see thumbnails of videos created. Currently a user must
- perform the following:
+ Most of the problem seems to be from the MPEG-TS demuxer in GStreamer
+ [mpegtsdemux] which needs to be fixed or rewritten to support random
+ access better, among other things.

- 1) Download FFMPEG current at:
http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/ffmpeg-checkout-snapshot.tar.bz2
- 2) Then compile/configure/install by running ./configure, make, make install
- 3) Extract the audio from the m2ts file to output.wav using mplayer:
- mplayer -vc null -vo null -ao pcm:fast:waveheader:file=output.wav xxx.m2ts
- 4) Extract the video from the m2ts file to output.avi using ffmpeg
- ffmpeg -i xxx.m2ts -vcodec mpeg2video -sameq -s 1920×1080 -r 23.976 -an
-f avi -copyts -benchmark output.avi
- 5) Create a final .avi file by merging the audio and video using mencoder
- mencoder output.avi -o final.avi -ovc copy -oac copy -audiofile
output.wav
-
- This is a lot of extra work to simply view files from your new
- camcorder. Support therefore is required of:
-
- - MTS container format
- - H.264 CODEC (including PAFF interlacing, current FFMPEG in Ubuntu gives

- I have an 1TB external HDD (ext3) which is hooked up to my computer
- using firewire. When i create a new folder in the drive, there is a
- significant delay, and the first time i tried it it froze. I am trying
- to copy files onto it and as soon as i told it to merge two folders, it
- froze. When it freezes it will simply hang and i can't kill the process.
- I have to restart my computer. When i copied files onto it using USB
- from my other computer, i had no trouble.
+ When transferring files over firewire to external storage, especially
+ large transfers, the transfer will hang. This appears to be hardware
+ specific, and i'm not sure if it's faulty hardware, or a a bug. My
+ firewire card seems to read from external sources just fine, but large

[Bug 397472] Re: Programs can freeze the desktop

2009-10-04 Thread Danny Piccirillo
okay basically, there was a bug in alarm-clock that caused the entire
desktop to freeze. the reason this bug is filed separately is because
the bug in alarm-clock was fixed, but python should not be able to
freeze the entire desktop like that. Here are the details i linked to
and how to reproduce. I'm also uploading the test case

Here's how I think you can reproduce the problem. Just write a program
(C or Python, doesn't matter) that:

 1. Creates a toplevel window (make it a fullscreen window for increased effect)
 2. calls gdk_pointer_grab on that window
 3. never calls gdk_pointer_ungrab

From that moment on, the program captures the pointer (and as side
effect also the keyboard). Consequently, the clueless user thinks that
X is frozen, when in actual fact is just poorly written app grabs the
pointer and never ungrabs it.

This is *NOT* a PyGTK bug. This is *NOT* a Gtk+ bug. This is *NOT* a
Xorg bug.

Every programmer that ever needed to write code to grab the mouse
pointer will occasionally temporarily write code that grabs the pointer
but forgets to ungrab it. I have been there myself. But the X session is
not completely frozen. You can recover by pressing CtrlAltF1, login
in a linux console, and manually kill the offending program. Then you
can go back to the X11 console (normally AltF7), and everything is
back to normal.

+ screen space more efficiently.

I never stated it was Ubuntu only. You filed the songbird
package in the first place against Ubuntu.

That would be impossible because like you said songbird isn't even in Ubuntu
so launchpad doesn't have a songbird package in ubuntu for me to report it
against. It can only be listed against the songbird project.

excellent idea, just like our codec manager-- should be filed as a separate
bug i think

I have found that a lot of people are disappointed that telepathy-idle
is not installed by default when they try to move their IRC account from
pidgin to empathy. I was thinking, something that may (or may not) work
for saving space on the LiveCD and stop users from complaining that
their spec isn't available by default would be to have empathy install
the connection managers (idle, butterfly, haze, etc...) upon request
when the user tries to create these accounts. I assume the user will
have to have an internet connection when wanting to use empathy, so its
just the means of installing the small packages to get the connection
 managers working.

 Workflow would be:
-hi thank you for installing empathy, would you like to import accounts
 from pidgin?
-because you are trying to install (AIM,IRC,MSN) we need to install the
connection managers, please click next to continue with this operation
 -Importing accounts, please wait...

It may also work to remove the connection managers if nobody is using an
 account with them anymore.

 Thoughts/Bashings/Comments?
