I can see both sides of this here; on a side note I've already appended
that line to my own sig. Partly to help advertise Ubuntu, but also
because I am making a small name for myself as a technician and if I
introduce people to Ubuntu I imagine it helps if they know I use it too.

[Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver

2010-08-31 Thread Dante
Listen, I'm really, REALLY sorry if the GNOME 'Vision' conflicts with
reality. But this is reality, and the vision must fit into it; we have
many screensavers that REQUIRE configuration; like the dozens of picture
screensavers.. How about RSS screensavers? Sure, equip them with a
certain feed, but to many people, we don't LIKE the default feed. Nor
can we change it. Do you have any idea how sick I am of many of the
picture screen-savers just loading the same series of Space photos?

This really is just silly. I'm all for not-confusing-the-user but I'm
NOT too keen on frustrating them, either.

[Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver

2010-08-31 Thread Dante
There are many, many screensavers in the Ubuntu repo, and many more on
various websites. An example of an RSS Screensaver is FontGlide,
Noseguy, Phospherseriously, there are loads.

So what if I don't want to have my pictures folder as a basis for the
screensaver? What if I would like to only show a subdirectory? Setting
up a symlink is not intutive. Grasping for a clearly defined
configuration panel is, I'd wager.

[Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver

2010-08-31 Thread Dante
Screensavers are mainly a passive activity, yes. I happen to be in love
with the Eletric Sheep screensaver, if only because I find it
hypnotising.

Schools and other educational institutions around me are still using the
old CRT monitors. As such, I would argue agaisn't the removal of
screensavers.

[Bug 612248] [NEW] gnome-screensaver has no configuration option.

2010-08-01 Thread Dante
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

There are many, many screensavers out there, and quite a few benefit
from being configured beforehand (GLText and other ones come to mind)

Upstream has refused to fix this, stating that any screensaver that
requires configuration is inherently broken. It was stated on the
official site of Gnome-Screensaver that the goal was to promote the
creation of quality themes. Whilst I can partially understand the
creator's reasoning, he does not and cannot account for the multiple
picture slideshow screen savers, RSS screensavers and internet-dependent
screensavers.

I would request that either the gnome-screensavers package is amended to
include one of the dozens of community modification that allow this, or
is disposed of and replaced.

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-07-31 Thread Dante
I have one panel (with Docky). Considering the recent slew of updates to
GNOME panel, I only experience corruption once/twice a month. I almost
always experience it the first three times I boot up a newly installed
Ubuntu box.

My other computer has the same setup, and visual corruption does not
affect it, but the applets seem to move around a lot.

This has always happened on both machines if I leave it with the default
top and bottom panels.

[Bug 463267] Re: Unable to mount location - Windows/SMB share

2010-05-10 Thread Dante
I'm having the same problem in lucid (not the beta, the full release;
beta was never installed on the system.)

using nautilus 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1

Workaround works, but is not ideal.

Interestingly, this only affects one of my laptops (the toshiba). The
other laptop (inspiton 800m) also has lucid but is unaffected my this
bug. Both laptops are accessing the same windows machine. Before upgrade
on karmic I had no trouble.

The only reason I can think of for this is that the inspiron, beung the
local DNS server, somehow beats the timeout.

Not sure what logs are needed, but if asked I'll post 'em.

[Bug 208979] Re: gdmsetup crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-06-03 Thread Dante
I have 2 laptops running Hardy. One is a fresh Hardy install (done today
and fully updated) the other is a upgrade from Feisty.

gdmsetup appears for about 1 second then crashes (No error message) If I
runt from the terminal I get Segmentation Fault.

I believe the problem was caused by a recent update. The fresh install
would run gdmsetup with no problems before I updated it. After all of
the latest updates were applied and the system restarted, gdmsetup would
crash.

I'm not sure what logs to look at or where to find them.

[Bug 61919] Re: sticky notes should stay when user clicks on desktop

2007-11-01 Thread -=Dante=-
I think that there should be an option to not have them hide when
clicking on the desktop. I have never liked this behavior. I'm using
Gutsy and they do hide when clicking on the desktop. Someone on the
Ubuntu forums said enabling desktop effects reverts it back to its
hiding on desktop click, you might want to try that Felipe. I think a
good compromise would be to let the user choose if he/she wants them to
hide.
