[Bug 1693360] [NEW] Users with no bug cannot change login session in gdm
Public bug reported: The UI to change the login session only appears on the gdm password screen (via the cogwheel icon that appears next to the login button). If you have a user with no password, this screen is bypassed, thus meaning that they can't change their login session type. To reproduce: * create a user with no password (e.g. with passwd -d). * start gdm. * select their user from the list. * watch as they are logged in without seeing the password screen. [Bug 574681] [NEW] Indicator applet only shows first item when in vertical panels
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel If you set vertical orientation for a panel containing indicator applets (as in the default configuration), then only the first item is shown. See attached 1.png. What's actually happening is that the applets aren't changing orientation, and are still displaying their icons horizontally --- expanding the panel reveals them; see 2.png. However, the default size of a vertical panel is such that the list of icons is clipped in a way that looks intentional. It isn't obvious where the icons have gone; they just appear to vanish. This is Bad. (As you can see from the second screenshot, merely widening the panel isn't really a workaround to this due to the poor way in which other applets resize themselves; see the network monitor. The indicator applets ought to be displaying their icons vertically.) (The striped background is #534582.) Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus If you connect a USB floppy drive, insert a disk, and pick the Format... option off the menu, the the disk is not formatted. What it does instead is just do a mkfs on the disk. This is correct for devices like USB keys or hard drives, but floppy disks have to be low- level formatted before you can make a filesystem on them. In particular, if you buy a blank floppy disk then it needs to be low-level formatted before use. There is a tool, ufiformat, that will low-level format a USB floppy drive. It's in Ubuntu. Pick 'deny' each time empathy prompts for the keyring password. 5. empathy will now give you the initial setup dialogue, acting as if there are no accounts. If you get past this and look at the accounts page, it will indeed be empty. 6. Quit empathy. Start t up again. The accounts page will still be empty. 7. Log out. Log back in. Start empathy. 8. Give authorization when prompted. 9. The accounts will have returned. This is particularly awkward as it's tempting to add all your accounts to empathy again when they are apparently 'deleted'. This'll end up having multiple copies of each account, and as removing accounts in empathy is extremely non-obvious (#441409), it's decidedly not a good user experience. empathy ought to just mark them disabled if it can't log them in (as Pidgin does). [Bug 465785] [NEW] Custom launcher icon browser is horrible to use
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel When you add a custom launcher, and want to set an icon, the icon browser is extremely unpleasant to use. For example: I work with Eclipse installed in a custom directory. I want to add a launcher for it. I open the 'create launcher' dialogue. I press the 'select icon' button. I get presented with a list of standard icons. However, this is a custom application: a standard icon is unlikely to be of any use. I have to sit and wait for it to load anyway, which takes several seconds, before I can proceed. Once it has loaded, I press the 'Browse...' button, and get a conventional file browser. I can now navigate into the Eclipse directory. Unfortunately this has been configured to only show directories and not files. The intention is that I should select a directory and the icon browser will then show me all the icons in that directory, but in this situation I don't where Eclipse has kept its icons (it varies from version to version). Because the file browser isn't showing me files, I can't see the icons. I have to go to a shell and search manually, and then go back to the file browser and select the appropriate directory. Now the icon browser reloads and I can finally select my icon. This has all taken about a two minutes. It's just too complicated. It's a classic example of being too clever to be actually useful. What I actually *want* is a standard file dialogue that will let me select a .png file. I appreciate the need to allow the user to pick one of the standard icons; adding a standard preview pane and a 'go to standard icons directory' button would achieve this. But as it stands it's simply not useful --- hiding files from the file browser dialogue is simply unforgivable! At the very least they should be visible but greyed out. [Bug 435329] Re: Empathy is unusable if indicator applet is not on the panel
I've just had a very confusing time trying to get an Empathy icon visible in the notification area: - I do *not* have an indicator applet running; I have a widescreen monitor and use vertical panels, and the indicator applet doesn't support these (and the authors do not appear to wish to support them; see #410254). - I start Empathy. I have no contacts. I close the window. I get the minimise-to-panel animation, but nothing appears. - ps shows that Empathy is still running, despite having no window and no icon. Investigation shows that the icon only appears if I have at least one account. I assume there's a corner case here where if there are no accounts there is no status and therefore no icon. Either way it's not pretty having an application running that I can't interact with. [Bug 326030] [NEW] Cancelling a 'move files' operation leaves the file system inconsistent
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus If you try to move a number of files to another volume it removes source files after each one is copied. This means that if you cancel the operation in the middle you end up with your files split arbitrarily between the source and the destination. This is unintuitive and unlike how other systems work; the normal approach is to copy all the files, and then only remove the source files once you know that the copy is successful. If cancelled before the copy is complete, then the copied files are removed. This allows the operation to be treated as transactional --- it will either succeed completely or fail with no side effects. Yes, I have just lost data due to this, using the following workflow: - attempt to move files to another volume. - copy fails midway with I/O error. - reinitialise destination volume. - retry move. - notice that it's moving fewer files than I started out with. If moves are not going to be treated as transactional, then I'd suggest that instead of removing files unilaterally from the source file system, they should instead get moved to the Trash, to allow easier cleanup from what is inherently a riskier procedure. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Cancelling a 'move files' operation leaves the file system inconsistent https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/326030 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 254199] [NEW] SMTP AUTH does not properly detect if the remote server closes the connection
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution If Evolution tries to connect to a SMTP server to send mail, and the remote server closes the connection while Evolution is busy (for example, if Evolution prompts the user for a password and the server times out), then Evolution treats the disconnection as an AUTH failure and will keep prompting the user for a password even though there's nothing listening at the other end. The only way of getting the mail sent is to press CANCEL and then try again with Send Receive. (Related issue: this workaround only works because Evolution retries with the last password the user entered --- except Evolution knows that the password is not valid because it thinks (incorrectly) that the remote server rejected it. Should it retry at all or simply forget the password?) In this situation, Evolution should notice that the connection has been lost and reestablish it. (It would also be polite to prompt the user for the password *before* opening the connection, to avoid holding the connection open for long periods of time --- a lot of SMTP servers these days use very short timeouts as an antispam measure; the one I found this bug on is set to five seconds.) Also, given that the drop-down is erroneously marked as supporting all authentication types, there are potential security implications. This is with 2.22.3.1 on Heron. ** Affects: evolution (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- The 'check for support types' button doesn't report errors https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/250993 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to evolution in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
