Both do not work. The image shows like it is paused but the movie
cannot be advanced nor does it play anything.

I can't get any movie types to play on my machine anymore. I even
uninstalled (from add/remove) movie player gstreamer and movie player
xine backend and reinstalled them through the same manner. still
doesn't work
