Can someone who is affected by this bug add this PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-service/+archive/ubuntu/4979, update
Qt from it and see if it makes things better?

[Bug 2009604] Re: Cannot lauch gnome-panel

2023-03-12 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Are you trying to launch gnome-panel on Wayland?

It won't work, the panel only supports X11 at the moment. The best way
to try it is installing gnome-session-flashback package.

But probably we should give a better error message.

[Bug 1947553] Re: wrong panel size 21.10

2021-10-31 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

- All users of gnome-flashback are affected, because panel size can be
- wrong.
+ This affects users of gnome-panel which have many applets, including
+ some applets on the center. It is a regression introduced between
+ Hirsute and Impish.

  [Test Plan]
- Add several applets to upper panel, try to move or rearrange applets, panel
right side will be behind screen.
+
+ 1. Install gnome-session-flashback and gnome-applets packages and log in into
the GNOME Flashback (Metacity) session.
+ 2. Right-click on the top panel and select “Add to Panel…”.
+ 3. Add to center some applets which occupy large space, like CPU Frequency
Scaling Monitor.
+
+ Bad behavior: applets on the right side are pushed outside of the
+ screen.
+
+ Expected behavior: applets on the center are shifted to the left to free
+ room for the applets on the right side.

  [Where problems could occur]
- Nowhere, it is just local panel bug.
+
+ The fix is changing the function which computes positions of panel
+ applets. So the regression potential will be limited to positioning.
+
+ Also the added code is not new, it was present in gnome-panel until
+ https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-panel/-/commit/9d6c76aa58ef3e9c.

** Description changed:

- Hi,

- i want to try to create a bookmark from an sshfs-folder mounted by
- nautilus in Ubuntu 20.04.
-
- - enable Address-bar in nautilus (found no way to do it via gui): gsettings
set org.gnome.nautilus.preferences always-use-location-entry true
- - connect to a ssh/sftp-share by entering address: e.g. ssh://192.168.0.10 -
connection worked
- - now i try to add a bookmark for it by make rightclick on mounted-filesystem
in the left list - bookmark created and visible in locations menu on
gnome-flashback and inside nautilus
- - i can access the bookmark while i'm connected...but if i reboot the
bookmark does not work anymore...only display error that it's not mounted. on
18.4 it will be mounted again (asking credentionals before of course).

-
  [Impact]

- * An explanation of the effects of the bug on users and
+ Users cannot open remote filesystems by clicking bookmarks in gnome-
+ panel (Places menu or its "Recent documents" submenu).

- users using gnome-flashback cannot open remote filesystems by clicking
- bookmark in gnome-panel
-
- * justification for backporting the fix to the stable release.
-
- patch is compatible with code of gnomepanel (3.36.1) in ubuntu 20.4,
- ubuntu 18.4 not affected
-
- * In addition, it is helpful, but not required, to include an
-explanation of how the upload fixes this bug.
-
-g_file_mount_enclosing_volume is now called if the volume is not
- mounted yet instead of displaying an error
+ This is fixed by calling g_file_mount_enclosing_volume if the volume is
+ not mounted yet, instead of displaying an error.

  [Test Case]

- * detailed instructions how to reproduce the bug
-
- - start window-session with gnome-flashback
+ - install gnome-session-flashback and log into GNOME Flashback (Metacity)
session
  - open nautilus
- - access an remote filesystem (e.g. ssh://192.168.0.x - server with sftp
enabled in lan)
- by pressing Ctrl-L to show addressbar and insert the adress
- - create a bookmark of this session
- - umount the share
- - click on bookmark in gnome-panel
-
- * these should allow someone who is not familiar with the affected

+ - create a bookmark for it by opening Nautilus context menu and clicking "Add
to Bookmarks"
+ - unmount the share
+ - click on bookmark in gnome-panel Places menu

  [Regression Potential]

- imho this can only be answered by author of Patch :)
+ This bug itself is a regression from previous releases, e.g. in Ubuntu
+ 18.04 it worked fine.

- * discussion of how regressions are most likely to manifest as a result
- of this change.
+ Most of the new code is executed within the "if (g_error_matches (error,
+ G_IO_ERROR, G_IO_ERROR_NOT_MOUNTED))" block, so it is executed only
+ where previously there was an error.

- * It is assumed that any SRU candidate patch is well-tested before
-upload and has a low overall risk of regression, but it's important
-to make the effort to think about what ''could'' happen in the
-event of a regression.
+ The only change outside that block is factoring out the
+ launch_uri_show_error_dialog function, but the logic is not changed.

- * This both shows the SRU team that the risks have been considered,
-and provides guidance to testers in regression-testing the SRU.
+ In any case, the potential regressions would be limited to handling
+ items in the Places menu.

  [Other Info]

- no idea what to write here :)

  [Impact]

This is a bug fix release that includes:
  - translation updates;
  - bug fix updates for netspeed, drivemount and window-picker applets;

  NEWS

  Change log for 3.63.4:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-applets/-/commit/ea8ec983c8d5e285c341b7a9448e0bf20d43d363
  Change log for 3.63.3:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-applets/-/commit/2d5de2dff49a520f4b4fbed81d94841441729344

  Fixes:

  - A bug fix for the netspeed applet to ensure that dialogs are destroyed when
an applet is destroyed:
- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-applets/+bug/1879140
+ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-applets/+bug/1884375

  - A bug fix for the window-picker applet to ensure that task icons are
correctly removed when a
  windows is closed:
- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-applets/+bug/1879140
+   https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-applets/+bug/1879140

  - A change for the drivemount applet to ensure errors are properly cleared:

Besides the above bug fixes the release contains the following two minor
  changes:

An change for the drivemount applet to update the nautilus desktop id,
without this change the drivemount applet will fail to open the GNOME Nautilus
file manager.

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-applets/-/commit/5445406a1257bc33b3b531d398748e311c6d93f6

  [Test Cases]
  - See the three linked bug reports for test cases of each individual issue
that was fixed.
  - The other two changes are minor code cleanups that cannot be validated with
a test case.

-
  [Regression Potential]

  netspeed:
The removal of an unused private variable has no regression potential since
it is not part of a public interface.

  drivemount:
The change to clear an error variable is only a minor cleanup in the code
with minimal regression potential.

  [Other Info]

  None.

code

Well, for moving files to trash it uses
org.gnome.Nautilus.FileOperations D-Bus interface, see dbusUtils.js. So
it should either implement the deletion itself, or use the new D-Bus
interface added in Nautilus 3.37.x.

[Bug 1881115] Re: shift-delete not handled

2020-06-10 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
For GNOME Flashback, this is fixed in version 3.37.1, available in
Ubuntu development release (Groovy).

It cannot be backported to 20.04 (Focal) because it needs changes in
Nautilus that are only available in Nautilus 3.37.1.1.

I guess a fix for gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons in 20.04 will be
impossible for the same reason.

[Bug 1825450] Re: gnome-panel crashed with SIGABRT when accessing the preferences of the Weather Report applet

2019-04-21 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
** Description changed:

- gnome-panel crashes whenever I try to open the preferences of the
- Weather Report applet.
+ [Impact]
+ gnome-panel crashes when one tries to open the preferences of the Weather
Report applet.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ 1. Install gnome-panel and gnome-applets.
+ 2. Run gnome-panel.
+ 3. Open the “Add to Panel” dialog (Alt + right-click → Add to Panel…), select
“Weather Report”.
+ 4. Right-click the added applet, click “Preferences”.
+ 5. gnome-panel should not crash, instead the preferences menu should be
opened.
+
+ [Proposed Fix]
+ libgweather 3.31.91 introduced an ABI break without SONAME bump, the values
of some enums have changed. See
<https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/libgweather/issues/17>. As the current
gnome-applets in Disco was built against libgweather 3.28, it thinks that a
location level is GWEATHER_LOCATION_DETACHED, while it actually is
GWEATHER_LOCATION_NAMED_TIMEZONE.
+
+ The proposed fix is a simple rebuild against new libgweather to pick up
+ new enum values.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ As the fix is a simple rebuild, I cannot imagine any regressions this could
cause.

[Bug 1769838] Re: Input source options does not work on Bionic with gnome-flashback

2018-09-22 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Hi Łukasz, now it should be better.

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

   * An explanation of the effects of the bug on users and:
Setting the 'Input Source Options' to 'Allow different sources for each
window' does not work.

   * justification for backporting the fix to the stable release:
This is a bug in Ubuntu Bionic's version of gnome-flashback (3.28)
(because the GUI lets the user change the input source option but the backend
does nothing)

  [Test Case]

   * detailed instructions how to reproduce the bug
     - Set Input Source Options to Allow different sources for each window in
gnome-control-center -> Region & Language -> Options
     - Realize that if you set different layouts for different windows it does
not change automatically when changing windows.

  [Regression Potential]

-  * discussion of how regressions are most likely to manifest as a result
- of this change:
+ * Metacity now ignores its own events when predicting focus changes. Its
+ own events are recognized by comparing timestamps and serial numbers. If
+ something potentially goes wrong, it can either not ignore its own
+ events, or ignore external events. In both cases the focus prediction
+ will be broken. Also there could be potentially a race condition, but
+ the patch protects against it by making a dummy request with bumped
+ serial number. (Note: the second metacity patch is an amendment for the
+ first one, so the previous analysis applies to both patches.)

-   This bug itself is a regression, because it was working in Ubuntu
- Trusty.
+ * GNOME-Flashback has some new code for handling per-window input
+ sources. The change_per_window_source() function returns early if the
+ sources_per_window option (obtained from GSettings: org.gnome.desktop
+ .input-sources per-window) is false. As that option is false by default,
+ in the default configuration most of the new code won't be executed at
+ all. The potential breakage may happen if it is set to true. Such
+ potential breakage includes: wrong input sources handling (it was wrong
+ before anyway), gnome-flashback crashes. The patches are already applied
+ in Cosmic, and currently no crashes are reported against the Cosmic
+ version of gnome-flashback on errors.ubuntu.com.

  [Other Info]

This needs fixes in both gnome-flashback and metacity.
Here are the relevant commits in gnome-3-28 branches:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/metacity/commit/b96341dabffc3589 (ensure that
we ignore our own focus events for focus predictions)
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/metacity/commit/9956d376d38d0ad6 (fix problems
with focus tracking)
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-flashback/commit/3c4c6ecddef48cd5
(implement per window input sources)

The gnome-session-flashback dependency on metacity will be bumped.

[Bug 1507764] Re: metacity crashed with signal 5 in _XEventsQueued() ; forcing gnome session to logout

2018-09-17 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Stephane, you should file a new bug using “ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_usr_bin_metacity.1000.crash” command (or whatever path to
.crash file is), attaching the crash file to existing bug does not help.

Also, we do not always have resources for supporting old Ubuntu
versions. Please upgrade to 18.04 LTS.

[Bug 1779663] Re: QT4 Tray application and CPU load in 18.04

2018-07-03 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
> Could not get owner of name 'org.kde.StatusNotifierWatcher': no such
name

Oh, it looks like I was wrong then.

There are two ways to get icons in the panel: via indicator-application
and via the old X11 tray.

The indicator-based tray is default if you have the standard panel
configuration (with indicator-applet added to the panel). But it looks
like you don’t have it, so the X11 tray is used instead.

You can try adding indicator-applet to the panel and see if this helps.

[Bug 1779663] Re: QT4 Tray application and CPU load in 18.04

2018-07-03 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
I think it is a bug in sni-qt that sends too many events to gnome-panel.
Other panels like fbpanel do not use indicators so the X11 tray is used
there, which does not have the issue.

sni-qt is also unmaintained so I doubt that this will be fixed.

You can use the X11 tray with gnome-panel too, by removing sni-qt
package and adding “Notification area” applet to the panel.

If you want to further debug the issue, output of dbus-monitor may be
more interesting than strace output.

[Bug 1729728] Re: window picker is broken in 3.26

2018-01-05 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
** Description changed:

- WindowPicker seems to be broken in 3.26.
+ [Impact]
+ One of the applets shipped in gnome-applets package is broken. It crashes on
startup because of missing GSettings schema file.

- It just crashes upon applet addition on fresh 17.10.
+ [Test Case]
+ * Log into GNOME Flashback session.
+ * Try to add the “Window picker” applet to the panel.
+
+ Expected result: panel does not crash, applet is added.
+
+ [Proposed Fix]
+ The proposed fix just makes the gsettings schema installed:
+
+ https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-applets/commit/?id=6aedbc3a6af54190
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ None, as the fix just adds a missing file.

[Bug 1703110] Re: notes doesn't delete only if empty

2017-07-20 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Brian: sorry, fixed now.

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

Unnesessary work for the user as he is forced to clear the note from
text in order to delete it. It makes it more difficult that selecting
  text isn't possible with mouse.

-
  [Test Case]

Write anything in a note and it can't be deleted with 'x' or with
  'delete notes' menu item.

+ [Proposed Fix]
+
+ The fix is a backport of two upstream commits:
+ - https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-applets/commit/?id=85041d6567c78b4a
“sticky-notes: make sure that notes are really saved”
+ - https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-applets/commit/?id=0c4e0c4fed0c61bf
“sticky-notes: fix path to resource file for delete dialog”
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ The fix definitely improves the Sticky Notes applet because without
+ ability to save notes that applet is mostly unusable. It does not touch
+ other applets so no regression expected there.

[Bug 1675369] Re: Metacity Not Sending ConfigureNotify events

2017-03-23 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
** Description changed:

  # Impact
When using seamless applications such as Rdesktop, the window manager needs
to send ConfigureNotify events. This is specified in ICCCM section 4.1.5.
Without it, software will hang and wait for a response.

This greatly impacts corporate and enterprise users that are trying to
integrate Microsoft Windows applications using Rdesktop.

  # Proposed Fix
A patch has been created here and should be merged:

https://git.gnome.org/browse/metacity/commit/?h=gnome-3-24=f09967fc0f1d65fc7b5057b362b9657154a86079

  # Test Case

[Bug 1638153] Re: metacity crashed with signal 5 in XGetWindowAttributes()

2016-11-09 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
** Description changed:

+ # Impact
+ Metacity crashes sometimes, which can lead to the session being aborted and
can cause loss of unsaved work results.
+
+ # Test Case
+ The quickest way to reproduce is to open up an image in Gimp, select all,
copy and then exit. That's when Metacity crashes.
+
+ It also crashes in other applications, like Netbeans.
+
+ # Fix
+ The proposed upload for Yakkety is identical to 1:3.20.3-1ubuntu3, which has
been in Zesty for some time. The fix comes from upstream gnome-3-20 branch.
+
+ # Regression Potential
+ The fix has been staged in Zesty, and nobody complained.
+
+ =
+
This began when I upgraded to 16.10, it always happens when using Gimp
under Gnome-flashback. Occasionally it happens with other apps too.
-
- The quickest way to reproduce is to open up an image in Gimp, select
- all, copy and then exit. That's when Metacity crashes.

The bad part is, if I don't run 'metacity --replace' before launching
gimp, it causes the entire session to quit and go back to the login
screen. (I know why it does that, but there should be some better error
handling there so people don't lose their work or any other in progress
things, at least with just metactity crashed there's a way of restarting
metacity and keeping the current session, as well as the ability to save
work in other applications before restarting)

[Bug 1614050] Re: Window depth order messed up

2016-10-31 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Uploaded the fix into Xenial SRU queue. Sorry for the delay.

** Description changed:

- Using the gome-flashback session with metacity is totally messed up
- since I updated from Ubuntu 14.04.3 to 16.04.1.
+ # Test Case
+ Described in comment
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/metacity/+bug/1614050/comments/16
+
+ # Impact
+ Sometimes the window depth order is wrong, for example the desktop icons
appear above all windows. Also sometimes windows disappear and the only way to
bring them back to life is restarting Metacity. This can result in loss of work
results for users who do not know how to deal with this bug.
+
+ # Fix
+ The Xenial fix is composed of two upstream commits, in gnome-3-18 branch:
+ - https://git.gnome.org/browse/metacity/commit/?id=d5f9e42e30c67d07
+ - https://git.gnome.org/browse/metacity/commit/?id=72488dc76ee24a3e
+
+ # Regression Potential
+ The patch has been in Yakkety for almost a month, and nobody complained.
+
+ =
+ Using the gome-flashback session with metacity is totally messed up since I
updated from Ubuntu 14.04.3 to 16.04.1.

All the effects mentioned here do not appear when using compiz, so I
  guess Metacity is broken.

-Windows that should open in front (like Kupfer) appear behind the
  windows already open.

-Before nemo is run, the Ubuntu default desktop background image appear,
it can't be changed by settings. I just guess this is due wrong ordering
of the true background and some window used by Gnome for showing the
  selected background.

-If nemo is run to take over the desktop, the destkop icons appear in
  front of all windows.

-
- I guess all those effects originate from a similiar reason. None of these
problems where appearant at Ubuntu 14.04.
+ I guess all those effects originate from a similiar reason. None of
+ these problems where appearant at Ubuntu 14.04.

This is a total show stopper for using metacity on 16.04 as everyday
applications like nemo and Kupfer can't be used.

[Bug 1620557] [NEW] weather.noaa.gov was shut down

2016-09-06 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Public bug reported:

The provider which libgweather was using was shut down in August.

We need to update libgweather in Xenial to new upstream micro release,
3.18.2, which switched to a new METAR data provider.

Impact: this affects all libgweather-using applications, makes them
unable to retrieve weather data.

Test Case: make sure Weather applet in gnome-applets is able to display
weather information.

This looks like an issue on your system (usually happens when one
forcibly stops the package installation), not a bug in Metacity.

[Bug 1613090] [NEW] SRU: gnome-panel 3.18.3

2016-08-14 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Public bug reported:

I would like to update Xenial version of gnome-panel to a new upstream
microrelease, 3.18.3.

Apart from translations updates, it fixes two bugs:

* User switching now works correctly when using GDM as display manager
(the LightDM code was not changed). This only affects gnome-panel's own
session menu, not indicator-session which is used by default.

A test case for this issue is:

  - Start GNOME Flashback session from GDM.
  - Try to select the Switch User action from gnome-panel's session menu.
  - GDM screen with user selection should appear, with ability to restore the
previous session.

Upstream bug for this issue is
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=769009.

* The scaling support was disabled in GTK+ to improve the experience on
HiDPI displays.

A test case for this issue is:

  - Try to run GNOME Flashback session on a HiDPI display, i.e. on new
Apple machines.

A package has been uploaded to ppa:ubuntu-gnome-flashback/unstable, the
build logs are available from there too.

Upstream changelog is available at https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-
panel/tree/NEWS?h=gnome-3-18.

Regression potential: the fixes are minimal so should not cause any
regressions.

All fixes in this release are applied also in 3.20.1, which is in
Yakkety.
