[Bug 1840612] [NEW] Software Center offers multiple version without explanation

2019-08-19 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 19.04
Gnome-software: 3.30.6-2ubuntu4.19.04.1

By default Ubuntu Software offers applications both from the ubuntu
repos and the snap store. that's fine but confusing. The two packages
can have different versions and descriptions, or the same version and
the same descriptions. This is all very confusing for anyone who doesn't
understand the difference.

I'm not going to suggest a specific solution, but here are some
thoughts.

- some key differences could be highlighted in tool-tip text
- the 'snap-store' text could be made into a button like the 'channel and
'license buttons. An explanatory text could be kept there.
- if Canonical thinks it's unimportant which source is used (which is implied
by not giving any caveats) then why not just roll the multiple packages into
one entry (like the current multiple versions available) and make the 'source'
text into an 'any' button which offers a choice of source. The newest version
(regardless of source) could be offered by default.

PS. it's inconsistent that the option to include snappy is a setting in
the Gnome-software package and cannot be set in the Software & Updates
package.

** Affects: gnome-software (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Description changed:

[Bug 986412] [NEW] Need to add support for PDF Portfolios

2012-04-20 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

[Bug 791993] [NEW] file-roller mangles non English filenames without warning

2011-06-02 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

What happens
Because of the inherent limitations in the ZIP archive format as described at
http://superuser.com/questions/60379/linux-zip-tgz-filenames-encoding-problem
it is not possible to encode file names with non-english characters so they
deflate with the correct names.

If the problem is only with files in subfolders it is quite possible
that I won't even see the problem until I try to extract the files - at
which time it is too late to find the files original name.

What I expect
I expect to be warned (at least the first time) if this is going to happen.
Even better file-roller could suggest an archive format which will not mangle
the letters.

+ Added 2011-05-17:
+
+ - Please note that the Gnome bug has gone a bit off track into a different
issue. I hope that is sorted now.
+ - With the new Unity interface this problem is even greater. Before that the

[Bug 743579] [NEW] f-spot exits if the target directory for import is not mounted

2011-03-27 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

I have my pictures on a separate directory which is not mounted at log-

any message - and that must be a bug - every application should say
what's going on and try to record the problem before dying.

[Bug 202853] Re: Keyboard accelerators interfere with keyboard input

2010-07-29 Thread Duncan Lithgow
It may be that the message now shown (Remote Desktop Viewer 2.30.2 in
Ubuntu 10.04) is relevant, it sounds to me that it is related:

quote
Vinagre comes with menu accelerators and keyboard shortcuts disabled by
default. The reason is to avoid the keys to be intercepted by the program, and
allow them to be sent to the remote machine.

You can change this behavior through the preferences dialog. For more
information, check the documentation.

This message will appear only once.

I have the problem that I simply don't understand this message... so I'm
looking to post a bug about that.

[Bug 611473] [NEW] cryptic message about menu accelerators confuses me

2010-07-29 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vinagre

In Vinagre 2.30.2 (Ubuntu 10.04) there is the following message:

/quote

I just want to say that I don't understand this message, but I'm not
totally new to VNC. So I guess this means the message could be clearer.
I went to look at the Vinagre manual and found section 2.4. Some notes
about Vinagre. There I think the text is much clearer, at least I
understood it. It reads:

quote
Vinagre comes with menu accelerators and keyboard shortcuts disabled by
default. This avoids keys being intercepted by Vinagre when you wanted to send
those keys to the remote machine.

For instance, the keyboard shortcut to close a tab is Ctrl+W, but that key
combination will be sent to the remote machine by default.
/quote

I suggest that the manual text be used to replace the message.

[Bug 478178] Re: Empathy is almost impossible to set as a startup application

2010-03-16 Thread Duncan Lithgow
As Adam says there is a need for a standard reliable 'add an
application' dialog. At the moment none of the various dialogs for
adding applications work very well. The one for selecting which
application to use for a given filetype is full of double entries,
missing entries and isn't even alphabetical, and the one this bug is
about is a shambles. Why does it open to my home directory? There are no
applications in there by default.

[Bug 505815] [NEW] file-roller manual suggests .ISO support by default

2010-01-11 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

The file-roller manual mentions (for example) iso support. But in fact
iso support is not instaled by default, so this should be mentioned in
the manual. Perhaps the manual should just mention that different OS's
install support for different archives, and suggest a link for info on
how to install support for more.

(Of course bug #148084 will one day fix this issue by having plugable
archive support, but that's some time in the future whereas now we have
this problem which can be fixed by editing the manual.)

[Bug 497400] [NEW] Can't send an SMS (text message) without using the address book

[Bug 398077] Re: No easy way to restore the session start programs to the default set

2009-12-06 Thread Duncan Lithgow
@Shahar Or: please don't reopen your own bugs without an explanation, it looks
like you're being pushy.
@Chris: I don't think this is the same as bug 364023. That bug wants to be able
to stop saving sessions automatically, no mention is made of manually added
applications. This bug is asking for a way to remove non-default applications
from the startup list. Very similar I agree, but not the same. This begs the
question: 'Does gnome-session know the difference between applications added
manually and those added by the session saving option?'

I have also forwarded this upstream

[Bug 490546] Re: Installing Pidgin wipes out my Empathy account settings

2009-12-03 Thread Duncan Lithgow
@Dave: It doesn't look like anything has been lost. The issue is that on
a _default_ and _clean_ install of Ubuntu 9.10 (in which the default IM
client is Empathy) if I install pidgin it 'steals' all my IM accounts
and details from Empathy. The first time I re-ran empathy it had lost
access to it's account settings. I think that the cleanest way to try
and reproduce this would be in a VM with Ubuntu 9.10 and see what
happens if after configuring and running empathy you install pidgin.

[Bug 490546] Re: Installing Pidgin wipes out my Empathy account settings

2009-12-02 Thread Duncan Lithgow
I accept Sebastian's comment, I can also switch between them (not without
problems though), but the response I got from Empathy when I _first_ installed
pidgin.
@Dave: so did you get a similar response?

* I can now see that after I forced pidgin to close, it no longer appears in
the indicator-applet, I assume this is the intended behaviour.
* Empathy was set to start at start-up, so it may have been running when Pidgin
ran for the first time.

If no-one else is seeing this then we should not confirm it just for the
fun of it...

[Bug 490546] [NEW] Installing Pidgin wipes out my Empathy account settings

2009-11-30 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

I got annoyed with empathy so thought I'd go back to pidgin while i try
to calm down...

But once pidgin was installed I wanted to check something so I started
empathy, but now empathy is asking me to import my settings from pidgin.
And when I start pidgin it has all the settings without ever asking me
to import anything... nice for pidgin but not for empathy.

[Bug 489759] [NEW] Panels don't remember their status: hidden / showing (with hide buttons)

2009-11-28 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I've set gnome-panel to 'show hide buttons', if I hide the panel and
restart Ubuntu the panel forgets its hidden state and shows up visible
again. This is an obvious problem, specifically it's a problem for me
because I like to have Gnome Do running at the bottom of my screen, but
I like to have the panel available when needed.

(Problems with gnome-panel forgetting it's state have actually been
reported at least twice before, but those reports were confusing and
ended as 'Invalid'. The two bugs I found were bug #152815 and bug
#119910 )

[Bug 488970] Re: f-spot froze during 'export to folder', hung system

2009-11-26 Thread Duncan Lithgow
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: f-spot

I tried to export my photos to a folder and this froze f-spot and hung
my system. Dropping to command line I tried to restart gdm but got the
message the I couldn't get control of display.gnome.org (or something
like that). The only remedy I could think of was a forced restart.
+
+ I can't reproduce this at the moment, so I guess it's an 'invalid'
+ unless it happens again.

[Bug 488131] [NEW] Empathy doesn't let me switch between dictionary languages per chat window.

2009-11-25 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

I regularly chat in English (en-gb, see bug 445863) and Danish at the
same time. A number of words can be spelt wrongly, but because they are
valid in the other language, they show up as spelt correctly. The right-
click spelling menu should allow me to specify which language an IM chat
is using and then only check that dictionary. See the Firefox
implementation for a good implementation.

(Want to know something funny? 'Firefox' is not in the en-gb spelling
dictionary of, yes, Firefox!)

[Bug 486364] [NEW] Evolution released without link to Manual

2009-11-21 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

As has been reported in several versions before this, 'Help Contents'
and/or 'F1' don't succeed in opening the manual. Surely this is
something for a list of 'Release critical tests' before it's released in
the wild...

For this problem in Ubuntu 4.10 (Warty Warthog) see bug 8806 (Possibly before
official release. Fix Released)
For this problem in Ubuntu 5.04 (Hoary Hedgehog) see bug 13091 (Fix Released
after shipping Warty)
For this problem in Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) see bug 76004 (Fix Released after
shipping Feisty)
For this problem in Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) see bug 312667 (could not be
reproduced in 8.10, therefore marked 'invalid')
And now in Ubuntu 9.10

I can see that http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Applications/EvolutionMail
does not include a test of whether the help system is working. I'll try
and do something about that.

[Bug 483250] [NEW] menu entry 'Applications System Tools Report a Problem ...' doesn't work

2009-11-15 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alacarte

Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) fresh install

Scenario
I've found an odd program which does somethinguseful but it's crashed and
caused problems with another componant if my Ubuntu desktop machine. I know
that the Ubuntu devs like us to use apport, but this application doesn't have
apport integrated (it's from the 'universe' repository of course). So I look
around for how to start apport so I can attach something useful to my bug
report. Eventually I find that in 'System Preferences Edit Menu' I can
enable a 'Report a problem...'. But as has been noted in bugs 479837, 368234
and 438847 this entry doesn't actually do anything. It doesn't even tell you
that it doesn't do anything!

I've read those bug reports and uinderstand the reason for this menu
entry being available but not doing anything, but that simply explains
the reasons for the problem without fixing it.

For now I'm reporting this bug against alacarte because having the
option of hidden menu items would avoid this bug.

A more useful solution might be for this menu entry to open and ask
which application is causing problems, and then try and collect data
about that application. We all know that sometimes things crash without
being caught by apport.

Add' to open by default to /usr/bin? That seems to be the most
reliable solution for now. This 'adding startup applications' has in
reality been a general bug for years now. Surely it's time to do
something?

[Bug 480953] Re: 'Audio Devices' 'Detected new device' dialog isn't obviously from Ekiga

2009-11-11 Thread Duncan Lithgow
I suggest that the dialog be renamed to 'Ekiga - Audio Devices' or the
text include a reference to ekiga like: 'Ekiga has detected a new audio
device' or both!

[Bug 480953] [NEW] 'Audio Devices' 'Detected new device' dialog isn't obviously from Ekiga

2009-11-11 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ekiga

This is a simple interface bug, here's how I found it:

I had ekiga running on screen, I also had empathy running on screen. I
plugged in a webcamera and got a useful popup dialog asking me if I
wanted to use this device as my default for audio. But if I hadn't seen
it before I wouldn't have known that it came from ekiga (I actually
plugged the webcam in to try something in empathy).

[Bug 478178] [NEW] Empathy is almost impossible to set as a startup application

2009-11-08 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic)
Empathy 2.28.1.1

Since I like to have my messenger clients running whenever I'm online I
wanted to set that to happen automaticaly. So here's what I tried:

* I looked in the preferences of Empathy, and appart from the confusing entry
Automatically connect on startup described in bug #322314 there is nothing
about connecting.
* I looked under 'System Preferences Startup applications', there is no
entry for Empathy so Itry to make one...
   * The file browser starts in my home directory so I assume there's a good
reason for that and try to find an entry there for empathy. Sadly there's no
entry there called empathy.
   * Luckily I know a bit about this Ubuntu thing and the Gnome Desktop so I
look into the .gnome2 directory. Finally a directory called Empathy. But sadly
that only has log files in it.
   * Thinking I'm a bit savvy I navigate to /usr/share/empathy ... but again
there is no file I can point to to start empathy ...
   * Now I'm getting annoyed, nothing useful in /usr/share/gnome/autostart
   * Nothing in /usr/share/gnome2
   * /usr/bin/empathy looks promising - maybe I'll be lucky this time.

Now I'm thoroughly annoyed at this stupid system which doesn't seem to
have any standard way of starting an application!
