[Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste
I seem to be in the wrong place. I came here looking for a GNU/Linux distro (am I allowed to say GNU on an Ubuntu site, or is that censored?) Ubuntu might not be the right OS for you. You might prefer something with GNU in the title and a 1970s command line instead of an interface, with a picture of RMS in the boot screen instead of a penguin. I don't see why all these people start using Ubuntu and then complain about how it's becoming too easy to use and too similar to other OSes. Just use a different distro! Stop trying to sabotage Ubuntu's success with archaic crap. So the question is, if you're all so enamoured with Windows and the Mac, why don't you just stick to those operating systems No no no. I used Ubuntu for 4 years and I'm *fed up* with it, so I *switched* to Windows. I'm not *sticking* with it. I'm *switching* to it. Different. instead of trying to pervert GNU/Linux into the very thing people switch to GNU/Linux to get away from? Yeah, people are switching to Linux in droves, and the primary reason is because the clipboard in Windows just works too damn well. What they're really craving is a clipboard that forgets everything when you close the app. And why am I still getting notifications for this bug when I've unsubscribed from it and other duplicates? :( And why does Launchpad allow people to argue and leave advocacy comments and other irrelevant noise like this, which is then sent to every one of the subscribers? There should be a way for users to mod up or down the relevancy of comments, so the irrelevant ones are minimized and the bug listing isn't crapped up with 260 comments that don't help fix the bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a subscriber of a duplicate bug (36165). https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/11334 Title: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 538165] Re: Lucid reads file size wrong
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 538783 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/538783 Asif Youssuff, I disagree with you wholeheartedly. I think that changing SI units to IEC units everywhere would be wrong-headed, illogical, and would create more confusion, and I am happy that Apple took the initiative to finally work towards fixing this. Many technically-oriented users have very strong opinions against this, but I don't think they're objective or logical. It's just a matter of perspective: * If you were taught in an 80s computer course that KB = 1024 B, you will think that this is the only true definition. You will think of Windows file sizes, memory sizes, and 5.25 inch floppy disk sizes as correct, and everything else as wrong. The evil hard drive, flash drive, and DVD manufacturers are all in on a conspiracy to defraud you, Apple is in league with the devil for using marketroid measurements for file sizes, etc. * If, on the other hand, you are a scientist or engineer or European, and were taught the metric system first, you will think that it is the only true definition. Hard drive, DVD, processor speed, networking rate, and other measurements are correct and logical, and the K = 1024 definition is a weird aberration created by early computer marketing types so that they could say 32 + 32 = 64 instead of 65 when talking with laymen. (See Donald Morrison 1968) * If, on the other other hand, you're an average computer user without a technical background, you don't know or care about the discrepancy between the two units, but you'll occasionally run into problems like trying to fit 4.7 GiB of data on a 4.7 GB DVD. -- Lucid reads file size wrong https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/538165 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 538165] Re: Lucid reads file size wrong
It's not marketing spin. It's the international standard system of units that has been used for hard drives, networking speeds, processor speeds, DVDs, Blu-Ray, and many other things since the beginning of time. kilo- = 1,000, mega- = 1,000,000, ... Also, it's more user-friendly and just makes a lot more sense than the Windows way of doing things, where a drive that holds 300,000,000,000 bytes is displayed as 279.4 GB in one place and 286,102 MB in another. It's nonsensical. [Bug 538165] Re: Lucid reads file size wrong
In this case, though, CDs have always, unlike hard disks, been labelled in binary megabytes, and my opinion is that it would be against the spirit of the new units policy (even if not its letter) to quote CD image sizes in decimal megabytes. Yes. DVDs are measured in decimal, though, and that was causing even more confusion for people who couldn't fit 4.4 GB on a 4.7 GB disk. No matter what is done, the software needs a well-designed interface that shows the user what they need to see in a given context. I think Brasero should show both measurements side-by-side, for instance, or show the disk size and image size in the same units near each other. I don't care if you write 700 MiB or 734 MB, but please don't continue using the erroneous 700 MB with no qualifier. And yes, only half-fixing the problem and leaving a bunch of apps conflicting with each other in an LTS release is not good. (But not really the end of the world, either, since the status quo is already inconsistent and confusing.) -- Lucid reads file size wrong https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/538165 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 538165] Re: Lucid reads file size wrong
since, like it or not - and I don't - that's how the things are labelled And for the record, to present another point of view, I *like* the way hard drives are labeled. Decimal is what people are used to working with in everyday life. We don't use 1024 for anything in real life. Writing disk and file sizes in base 2 multiples is needlessly confusing and serves no purpose that I know of. It doesn't simplify anything or fit any natural sizing of the numbers. There's nothing about hard drives or files that lends them to binary measurements. The only thing that naturally comes in powers of two is memory, and we have KiB and MiB for that. It has never made any sense to me why people think it preferable to label a drive that holds close to 100,000,000,000 bytes as 93 GB. It's not logical or user-friendly, and the only rationale I've heard for continuing to do it that way is that Windows does it that way. -- Lucid reads file size wrong https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/538165 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 538165] Re: Lucid reads file size wrong
The total capacity of an optical or magnetic disk isn't based on the size of its sectors. It's based on fitting the maximum number of bits in the surface area of a given circle. They aren't going to throw away storage space just to make it an even multiple of the nearest power of 2. sudo fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes How is it beneficial to display this disk to the user as 149 GB, or 152,627 MB? What advantage is there to this convention? How does this make things more intuitive or convenient for the user? 160.0 GB makes a lot more sense to me. [Bug 458622] [NEW] Cannot make links on FAT partitions
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus If I try to make a link on a FAT partition, I get this error: Error while creating link to filename. There was an error creating the symlink in /media/FATpartition. Show more details v Error making symbolic link: Operation not permitted 1. If you can't make a link on a certain filesystem, you probably shouldn't even offer to. Ctrl+Shift+Drag should show a not allowed icon instead of a link icon. 2. If you do let them think they can create a link, and then show an error message, you need to reword it. This error message is too cryptic. 3. Better yet, there should be a way to make pseudo-links on filesystems that don't support linux-style symbolic links. In other words, libarchive may only support proper archives, but from a user's perspective, .bz2 is an archive format, too. Wikipedia's article, for instance, differentiates between Archiving only, Compression only, and Archiving and compression formats, but they're all under the umbrella of Archive formats, as the term is usually used. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_archive_formats A .bz2 file can be opened from the context menu with Archive Manager, just like a .tar.bz2. I'm not sure what you mean by opening the archive. [Bug 130997] Re: Non-Linux hidden files like Thumbs.db should be treated the same as .filename
Remember there are two possibilities: 1. Reading the hidden attribute from filesystems that support it 2. Pattern-matching on commonly-hidden filenames like Thumbs.db, desktop.ini, ~*.tmp, __MACOSX, etc. - like a global .hidden file The kernel devs refuse to consider #1, while dfalk's patch seems to implement #2. Does Samba do something like #1 that could be implemented for local filesystems? I don't see anything on http://bugzilla.kernel.org/ about this. The mailing list discussion says it will be ignored, but maybe we should file it anyway? I don't think #2 is a bad idea at all, though, and could probably be extended to be part of a related idea to allow for files to be attached to other files, with the attachments hidden by default (book.txt~ attached to book.txt, and web_page_files attached to web_page.html, for instance). That might require glob-matching as well as filename matching, though, but it's also something done on a file- level rather than a filesystem-level. [Bug 421177] [NEW] Units are wrong and internally inconsistent
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Nautilus continues to use the wrong definition for units like megabyte and gigabyte, following the broken Microsoft convention of units like MB = 1024Ć1024 bytes instead of the standard 1000Ć1000 bytes. The power-of-two convention needlessly confuses users, contradicts the standard meaning of the prefixes, and serves no logical purpose. (It only simplifies calculations in the context of memory, which naturally comes in powers of two. For anything else, like a file manager, it just adds an extra layer of complexity.) It's inconsistent with other apps, with the way hard drives, flash drives, DVDs, and other media are measured, and even inconsistent with itself, as shown in the attached image. A 160,041,885,696 byte hard drive should be displayed as 160.0 GB. A 4,700,372,992 byte DVD should be displayed as 4.7 GB, and you should be able to fit 1,000 4.7 MB files on it. A 328,000 byte file should be displayed as 328 kB. Even Apple has started doing it right. (http://blog.macsales.com/1852 -snow-leopard-changes-they-way-we-look-at-gigabytes-and-megabytes-and- kilobytes-as-well) This is the *file manager*. 10 without any unit is supposed to mean point unit. Well, according to that article it doesn't necessarily have any meaningful units. is 13.333px better for your unit? I'm not sure what this is asking. I think it would be better if it the font settings showed point units instead of being a meaningless number, and I think point units would be better than px units. [Bug 132812] Re: When moving, renaming, deleting files, their backup copies are not modified
How about this? We could consider the backup file to be attached to the main file, and both would normally be shown as one icon. If you select the icon, it will say something like this in the status bar: To do list.txt (and 1 hidden attachment) selected If you then move or rename this, the backup file gets moved or renamed, too. If you want to work with each file separately, you can open the context menu and click Expand, and any selected files with attachments will be expanded to show all the actual files, with lines connecting them to show which ones are attached. Or we could use the Show hidden files command to expand these into separate files. (Or both.) Then in this mode you can work with each file individually if you need to. Other possible applications: This functionality would also be useful for HTML files with folders of content attached. Like in Firefox when you save as Web Page, complete, you will get a file like My Homepage.html and a folder like My Homepage_files which contains associated content. In Windows, these are treated as a group in some ways (deleting one deletes both), but not in others (renaming pops up a dialog). This grouped file functionality could be used for these, too. In OS X, extra file data (resource fork) is stored in ._whatever files. These could be connected to the original file, too, so that moving or renaming files in Ubuntu maintains their metadata for later use in OS X. Other similar things: .info files, bundles, application directories, ... There are probably other, better uses I'm not thinking of. -- When moving, renaming, deleting files, their backup copies are not modified https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/132812 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
