does look like an improvement though.

[Bug 44339] Re: Regression in usplash artwork

2006-05-13 Thread Frank Schoep
I've been able to withhold myself from posting this in the bug report, but for
the people not on ubuntu-art or ubuntu-devel here's a small update on what I've
been doing the past hours: I've been working on a splash screen for Ubuntu
Dapper, I've already got a working version here (please test it):

Screenshots:

[Bug 44339] Re: Regression in usplash artwork

2006-05-13 Thread Frank Schoep
Anyone interested in what I and the other members are doing with the
Minimalistic and other splashes should either subscribe to ubuntu-art
and possibly ubuntu-devel. It's not that I don't want to keep you
informed, it's just that the discussion on this is now running on three
separate locations and so far I'm managing pretty well, but I can't
assure everything being up to date anytime. It would be easier to get
discussion rolling on ubuntu-art and try to keep discussion out of the
bug report.

Anyone who disagrees is welcome to voice his opinion, I'm only
suggesting what I think is right.

[Bug 44339] Re: Regression in usplash artwork

2006-05-12 Thread Frank Schoep
I'm sorry but I have to agree with the others on this one. The ubuntu
name is visibly aliased with the round bottoms of the u's and b's
completely cut off. There's also a lot of aliasing in the logo - the
glow does not smoothly blend in with the colors, this is also apparent
in the name - the black shapes which form the letters do not blend
smoothly into the glow, instead it's a harsh contrast between the
letters and the glow.

I really started to love the old bootsplash, it's really amazing
considering the limitations on the graphics format for bootsplash
images. With respect to all the work gone into the new splash I'm sorry
to have to call it less professional.

[Bug 44107] Stray Application menu separator for normal user

2006-05-10 Thread Frank Schoep
Public bug reported:

Affects: gnome-menus (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
After creating a normal user account without sudo privileges some menu
items are removed from the GNOME menus, which is great. However, on the
Applications menu there is a leftover separator bar at the bottom. For
sudo-accounts there is a menu item Add / Remove software there, but
for non-sudoers only the separator is shown. It could be removed to
reduce clutter and unnecessary elements.

[Bug 42265] Inconsistent icons in toolbar

2006-04-30 Thread Frank Schoep
Public bug reported:

Affects: ubuntu-artwork (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Confirmed

Description:
The icons used in the Firefox toolbar do not match any of the desktop's
other icons or colors. The back and forward buttons are green, refresh
is blue, home is white and yellow. Firefox is alone in this regard, all
other bundled applications do seem to use the default icons from the
Human theme.

Is it possible to use the Ubuntu default Human icons instead of the
current icons which (in my opinion) look out of place on a default

[Bug 39270] Download progress bar aliased (using default Human theme)

2006-04-30 Thread Frank Schoep
Public bug reported:

Affects: ubuntu-artwork (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
In the downloads dialog, the progress bar for the currently selected and
highlighted download has noticable aliasing. The white border separating
the blue selection color and the real progress bar border is far more
noticable using the Human theme than Clearlooks, for instance.

I tested a lot of themes to see if this problem is apparent when not
using Human and my conclusion is that other themes have the same problem
but it's just less noticable.

I'm not sure whether to report this problem in the Firefox package or to
file it under the Human theme package, but since Firefox exhibits the
same problem when using different themes, I'm placing it here.

I will attach a zoomed screenshot shortly.

[Bug 39269] Download progress bar misaligned on (de)select using default Human theme

2006-04-30 Thread Frank Schoep
Public bug reported:

Affects: ubuntu-artwork (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Confirmed

Description:
While downloading a file and tracking its progress in the downloads
dialog, the progress bar is not always drawn correctly when selecting
and deselecting the download. Especially when downloading multiple files
this bug becomes apparent.

To reproduce:
- Download multiple larger files (for instance some kernel source tarballs) and
open the downloads dialog.
- Wait until at least one of the files is at 10% complete.
- Now click on each of the downloads, selecting a different one each time,
while doing this, observe how the progress bar drawing seems to shift
horizontally.

I will attach a screenshot showing the problem with one file being
downloaded. By clicking on the download itself and alternating between
the empty space to deselect it, I was able to document the behaviour.

This bug is cosmetical, but it just feels wrong to have the progress bar
shift forwards and backwards, especially when downloading multiple
files. I sometimes use the Cancel or Resume options on my downloads
and almost everytime I use them, the progress bar shifts.

[Bug 42265] Re: Inconsistent icons in toolbar

2006-04-30 Thread Frank Schoep
This is definitely not a duplicate of #39264 which I have filed myself - this
bug, #42265, is about the icons used in the main toolbar. The main toolbar is
where the Back, Forward and so forth icons are located in the main window.

[Bug 38968] Re: Change splash image (reuse Breezy)

2006-04-12 Thread Frank Schoep
Sebastian and Daniel. thank you both for replying so quickly. You both seem to
be decisive men so I won't argue with the outcome.

I thought my proposal seemed fair in light of Ubuntu as a whole, thinking
outside of the single packages and looking at offering a consistent visual
style among all components. I hope I didn't just make myself impopular by
filing this bug.

I do not seem to have privileges to update the status to Rejected or Wontfix,
can / should someone do this?

Sounds like an excellent idea, I'll do exactly what you said. Thanks for the
advice.

[Bug 38968] Change splash image (reuse Breezy)

2006-04-10 Thread Frank Schoep
Public bug reported:

Affects: gimp (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
First of all, my sincere apologies if this bug / wish is out of place.

GIMP's splash screen in Dapper feels rather unpolished compared to the
one found in Breezy (will attach a comparison shortly). This is not
strictly a bug in Dapper, but in my opinion a rather poor choice
upstream. My suggestion would be to reuse the Breezy splash screen in
Dapper, I'll elaborate a bit more on why I'm proposing this change.

The current Dapper splash screen is the result of a competition set up by the
GIMP Team celebrating the tenth anniversary of the program. I followed this
contest from the start and I feel that none of the entries matches the elegance
and polish displayed by the current splash screen in Breezy. Especially the
winner, and thus the current splash, lacks in a few departments:
- The GIMP title text is barely legible due to the font, shadow and bordering
- Legibility gets worse for the color blind, try using the Deuteranopia
display filter on the new splash, it becomes one big washed out gray area
- A rusty dial doesn't instill confidence or inspire creativity
- The green color doesn't match any element in the Dapper theme and feels out
of place

The current Breezy splash offers the following advantages:
- The orange base color blends in perfectly in the new Ubuntulooks theme and
the overall appearance of the desktop environment
- The GIMP name is sharp and has a good contrast compared to the white
background
- The pencils are appropriately themed and (for me) do inspire creativity
- The white background makes the splash screen uplifting and clean instead of
depressing (the green in the new one is kind of dark)
- The version number doesn't list the minor release so it could be reused
without any further changes

To rehash: I would feel that the Ubuntu Dapper release would benefit
greatly by reverting a bad aesthetical choice upstream. I haven't held a
popularity contest or something, but I hope I've been able to convey my
thoughts and feelings on this subject with a solid list of arguments.

If the Breezy splash is not an option, the Dapper example content also
provides a GIMP splash screen which looks better than the current Dapper
one. Look for this one in the Examples folder in your home directory on
Dapper.

All of the above is purely subjective and represents my view on the
subject, please take this in consideration.

I've spent some time creating a comparison of the old and new splash with and
without Deuteranopia color blind simulation:
