[Bug 1189382] [NEW] Misleading icons for “Keyboard” and “Keyboard Layout” in Control Center

2013-06-10 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

Control Center has two settings panels for keyboard related settings:
“Keyboard” and “Keyboard Layout”. The icons used for these panels are
misleading, as they suggest exact the opposite content:

- The “Keyboard Layout” icon depicts tree keys, two of which are connected by
an orange line. This suggest something like “keyboard shortcuts”, where you
combine two or more keys to trigger certain actions. But shortcuts are part of
the “Keyboard” panel.
- The “Keyboard” icon depicts a whole computer keyboard. This suggests that one
can configure the keyboard as a whole, i.e. its layout.

Thus, I would suggest switching the icons used for these panels.

P.S.: One could also question the categories these settings belong to:
Personally, I would expect the keyboard layout to define the “Hardware” aspect
of the keyboard, while keyboard shortcuts are more of a “Personal” setting.
P.P.S.: A related, but different bug is #883256 which suggests merging these
categories altogether.

[Bug 1175144] [NEW] nautilus-sendto does not quote e-mail display names

2013-05-01 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

When sending a file using nautilus-sendto and e-mail (evolution), one
can type an e-mail address directly in the nautilus-sendto dialog. This
entry also supports completion using the local address book. When
choosing an e-mail address from the completion box with a display name
that contains a comma, this display name is not quoted.

As a consequence, the newly created e-mail contains an invalid e-mail
address.

E.g., when selecting

Doe, John john@example.com

it should be quoted as

Doe, John john@example.com

Otherwise, Evolution shows an error message when trying to send that
e-mail.

[Bug 986676] [NEW] Shotwell does not show thumbnails for images on Mass Storage Camera

2012-04-21 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

When I want to import photos from my N9, which is detected as Mass
Storage Camera, no image thumbnails are shown. Instead, a blurry Image
missing icon is used. However, I can import images. Not having
thumbnails just makes the selection of specific images next to
impossible.

[Bug 961337] [NEW] Clicking in HTML e-mails results in selecting arbitraty pieces of text

2012-03-21 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

I am using Evolution on an up-to-date Precise system.

I noticed that when clicking in an HTML e-mail, some seemingly random
piece of text will be selected/highlighted. The selection ends where I
clicked, but I cannot find a pattern as to where it starts. Also, this
prevents properly selecting text, as clicking and dragging also will
result in fairly random text selection. Links are not opened when
clicking on them.

These effects do not appear with plain text e-mails, only HTML e-mails
are affected.

I recorded a short screencast to show the issue.

[Bug 956834] [NEW] gnome-file-share-properties states to receive files over bluetooth in Downloads folder, while it actually receives in Public folder

2012-03-16 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

In gnome-file-share-properties, the option to enable receiving files
over bluetooth is labeled “Receive files in Downloads folder over
Bluetooth”. In fact, however, it receives files in Public folder.

I am not exactly sure which is the desired behavior (Downloads folder
would actually make sense to me, but one could also argue in favor of
Public folder, which can be shared over Bluetooth). But either way, the
label and the behavior should match.

fine.

[Bug 938906] [NEW] Empathy tooltips unreadable

2012-02-22 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

Tooltips in empathy are unreadable: Inside the semi-transparent dark
tooltip, there seems to be a box with a light grey background. The text,
however, is white. This leads to the text being unreadable.

I guess the inner box should simply have no background color, thus
making the white text readable on the dark background of the tooltip.

[Bug 928513] [NEW] Brasero fails to burn DVD with error in BraseroGrowisofs

2012-02-07 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

When trying to burn a DVD (dual layer in this case, but I don’t know if
this makes a difference), brasero fails to burn the image. Attached, you
find a session log from Brasero.

What seems especially striking is that brasero constructs this command
line:

growisofs -use-the-force-luke=notray -use-the-force-luke=4gms -dvd-
compat -speed=6 -use-the-force-luke=tracksize:3575604 -use-the-force-
luke=tty -Z /dev/sr0=/tmp/brasero_tmp_NX2N9V.bin

This also fails when using it directly. But when I construct a
minimalist version of it, it works:

growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/sr0=/tmp/brasero_tmp_NX2N9V.bin

I don’t know if there are cases in which these extra options are
necessary. But for me, they prevented growisofs from burning the disc
correctly, although it obviously is able to burn it when omitting these
options.

[Bug 924178] [NEW] e-mail content corruption in Evolution

2012-01-31 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

Now for the second time since I upgraded to Precise, I experienced
e-mail corruption in Evolution. In the list view, subject, sender and so
on are correct, but when I open the e-mail, its content is truncated and
also shows parts of the message that are normally not printed, like HTML
code and message boundaries. When I open the e-mails source, I can see
that also the headers are broken.

I attached a screenshot of one message’s source, which is heavily
corrupted.

When I open the e-mail on my provider’s webmail interface, it is
complete there. So it seems that not the actual e-mail content on the
IMAP server is broken, but evolution’s cache or rendering or whatever.

[Bug 922329] Re: Evolution is missing the correct icon for encrypted e-mails

2012-01-27 Thread Frederik Elwert
The issue seems to be that evolution uses icons like stock_lock-ok. In
Precise, these are in gnome-icon-theme-full, which is not installed by
default. gnome-icon-theme depends on humanity-icon-theme | gnome-icon-
theme-full. I don’t know the reasoning behind this split of g-i-t, so I
don’t know what the best way of solving this would be, but possible
solutions could be:

- evolution should depend on g-i-t-f
- h-i-t should get the appropriate icons

[Bug 775682] Re: Desktop sharing in Empathy in 11.04 disabled when chatting with Empathy in 10.04

2011-12-19 Thread Frederik Elwert
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 881664 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/881664

@Muhammad: How is this a duplicate of bug #881664? That other bug seems
to be about desktop sharing not working, a) regardless of client
version, and b) although it pretends to be working (desktop sharing
enabled in the UI). This particular bug is about desktop sharing not
working a) with an older client version, and b) desktop sharing is
disabled in the UI, so Empathy seems to do this on purpose.

[Bug 853913] Re: gedit crashed with SIGSEGV in g_return_if_fail_warning()

2011-10-13 Thread Frederik Elwert
I tried all GDP plugins, and for me it only crashes with the GDP Bazaar

The terminal output:

[Bug 872969] [NEW] Brasero manpage needs to be updated

2011-10-12 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

The brasero manpage need to be updated. The manpage does not correspond
to the output of brasero --help regarding the supported options. E.g.,
the --debug option is listed in the manpage, but brasero does not
support it (and --help does not list it, either).

In addition, the second paragraph of the Description section starts
with rasero instead of brasero.

[Bug 589100] Re: gnome-power-preferences monitor power settings not respected when running laptop stationary

I can confirm this for Oneiric.

It’s not only monitor, all power settings are not respected. I set power

There is not much use for system settings which have no effect.

[Bug 840875] Re: Empathy sends a notification Password required without any supplementary info

I think there are two issues here: First, the message isn’t very useful
without the action hint or additional information in the case actions
are not available.

But second, why is the notification sent at all? It seems that no
password is actually required, since the accounts do connect properly.

[Bug 822810] [NEW] Current step in Evolution Setup Assistant unreadable

2011-08-08 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

The Evolution Setup Assistant, which is launched when you start
Evolution for the first time, contains a column with the steps to
perform on the left hand side. It uses white text color to indicate the
currently active step in the assistant. This is hardly readable on the
light background.

(Besides that, this column isn’t exactly a masterpiece in design, but
that’s probably a matter of taste. The readability isn’t.)

[Bug 766530] Re: vinagre uses wrong keyboard layout

2011-05-15 Thread Frederik Elwert
Here’s what I found out so far:

When accessing vino on Ubuntu 10.04 from both vinagre on 10.04 and
11.04, I experience a problem with not all key presses being
transmitted. It seems not to be actually the case that a wrong keyboard
layout is applied, since the keys that are transmitted are correct. But
not all key presses are transmitted, e.g. umlauts (ä,ö,ü), the euro sign
etc. are not displayed on the server. So it somehow seems that only
ascii (?) keycodes are received on the server, but using the correct
keyboard layout.

When accessing vino on Ubuntu 11.04 from vinagre on 10.04, all keys work
correctly.

Thus, for me it currently seems that the issue is within vino, but
apparently was fixed in the version that shipps with Ubuntu 11.04.

@georg.hoermann: Does this match your observations?

[Bug 766530] Re: vinagre uses wrong keyboard layout

2011-05-11 Thread Frederik Elwert
@georg.hoermann: So are you using a tightvnc client to log into a vino
server on 11.04?

That might be a hint that I falsely accused vinagre, and the actual
issue is with vino. OTOH, as I only upgraded the client machine to
11.04, I thought that the bug was introduced in the vinagre client with
11.04.

We probably need some more research here, I’ll see if I can find the
time to play around a bit with various client/server combinations.

[Bug 768398] [NEW] Logs are shown in a grey-ish theme and less readable

2011-04-21 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

The Ubuntu theme for empathy conversations now shows past conversations
in a special theme where everything looks desaturated. This makes sense
in the chat window, so one can easily distinguish previous conversations
from the current one.

But this theme is also used in the log viewer. This makes much less
sense, since one knows that the log viewer shows past conversations
without this visual hint. In effect, it makes the logs harder to read,
since the text has less contrast. Conversations in the log viewer should
always use the normal theme.

[Bug 766530] [NEW] vinagre uses wrong keyboard layout

2011-04-19 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vinagre

In a VNC session between a Lucid machine (vino server) and a Natty
machine (vinagre client), both using a German locale with German
keyboard layout, the key events set from client to server use a
different keyboard layout (probably US-English). If I remember

[Bug 749136] [NEW] Nautilus doesn’t start on active workspace

2011-04-03 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I’m running Ubuntu 11.04 Beta with Unity on a Dell Mini 9.

When launching a Nautilus file browser window, it doesn’t open on the
current workspace, but on a different one. I don’t know if this is a
nautilus, compiz or Unity issue, but I only experienced it with Nautilus
so far. It doesn’t matter if I launch Nautilus through the “personal
folder” icon in the dock, or by using Alt+F2. In either case, Nautilus
doesn’t start on the current workspace and I have to use the workspace
overview to find the Nautilus window.

[Bug 629258] Re: Battery life estimation never comes around

2010-10-24 Thread Frederik Elwert
João, I have the same situation you describe on my Dell Mini 9. So in my
opinion, there are currently two issues:

* g-p-m has no estimates about the remaining battery *time*. This seems to be
because of lacking ACPI information, if I understood it correctly. This could
be solved by calculating these estimates in g-p-m, but this is probably not
trivial.
* The second issue is how the battery indicator deals with this situation.
Currently, it simply shows “estimating…” forever, but never comes around with
estimated values. I think if it cannot get the remaining battery *time*, it
should resort to displaying the battery *charge* (percentage). This is probably
much easier to implement and would give at least any usable value, instead of
the useless “estimating…”. And, if I recall correctly, this was the behavior in
Lucid.

So if it is not possible to resolve the issue of getting the time
estimates in the short term, I’d suggest to resort to the values that
*are* available (as the charge percentage).

[Bug 664449] [NEW] Tasks component of evolution not accessible in maverick UNE

2010-10-21 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I am using Ubuntu UNE (with unity). In Evolution, the component switch
buttons have been removed. Instead, there are two separate application
entries for calendar and e-mail. The mail component has a button to
launch the contacts component. But there is no way to launch the tasks
or notes components (at least none I found, besides using the command
line). For the notes component, this might be less crucial, because
Tomboy is the primary note taking application in Ubuntu. But for the
tasks component, this is quite severe.

So in my opinion, there should either be a separate applications entry
for the tasks component, or a button in the calendar component.

[Bug 513580] Re: totem : No URI handler implemented for mms

2010-03-06 Thread Frederik Elwert
This problem can be solved by installing gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
(which contains the mms-handler).

So this either isn’t a bug, or the bug is related to the codec-auto-
install feature. Should the auto-install also work for URI-handlers, not
for codecs? It would definitely be useful, since users just expect
things to work, including mms-URIs. But I don’t know enough about the
technical details if this is in the scope of that GStreamer feature.

[Bug 138586] Re: Gnometris controls very unresponsive when keys are held down

2009-11-04 Thread Frederik Elwert
jal, which version of GNOME/Gnometris are you using?

With 2.28, the graphics engine seems to have bin ported to OpenGL. The
lagging graphics issue of previous versions seems to have gone with that
version. But I noticed that the new OpenGL animation leads to a lag of
some milliseconds that make it hard to get through the upper levels. I
think this is not a bug, but by design. Still it might be nice to have
an option to disable the animation to get more precise control.

[Bug 202429] Re: Search does not find anything if files name is partly written

2009-03-06 Thread Frederik Elwert
I agree this kind of feature is quite essential for a desktop search
engine.

If tracker can't do it, couldn't deskbar-applet work around it? There is
locate, which has a quite capable filename search engine. Wouldn't it be
possible to write a simple deskbar plugin that queries locate -i
~/'*$SEARCHTERM*' as you type?

Deskbar has the advantage of taking multiple sources into account, and
if tracker simply isn't designed for finding files by name, then use the
tools that are.

[Bug 244711] [NEW] Deskbar window moves every time it's opened

2008-07-01 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: deskbar-applet

Every time the deskbar window is opened (e.g., via Alt-F3 or clicking
the icon), the window is a bit more to the right and to the bottom of
the screen than it was the last time.

I just crawled the source a bit and found that deskbar uses get_position() on
the gtk.Window to the the coordinates, stores these values to gconf, and sets
them with move() after re-opening the window. The PyGTK reference points out
that this method will most likely fail to restore the original position due to
window manager missbehaviour. Compiz, which I am using, also seems to suffer
from this.
(see
http://www.pygtk.org/pygtk2reference/class-gtkwindow.html#method-gtkwindow--get-position
 )

The reference suggests using true session management, e.g. via
GnomeClient. I don't know if this would be a valid option for deskbar,
but the hopping window is really not ideal.

[Bug 197763] Re: panel menu entry doesn't show correct icon

2008-06-16 Thread Frederik Elwert
I think that the svg files shouldn't be in the 22x22 directory. Maybe
that causes problems, which would explain why changing the Icon key in
the desktop file to seahorse.png fixes the issue.

On the other hand, I tried deleting the svg icons and copying the files
from /usr/share/pixmaps/seahorse/22x22/ to
/use/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/, but this didn't help. So the
problem might not be related to the svg files.

[Bug 184839] Re: evolutions displays pgp-messages as attachment.dat

2008-05-19 Thread Frederik Elwert
I can confirm this for mails sent by Thunderbird users. After
decrypting, I can save the attachment.dat locally and open it with a
text editor, as Luigi described it. So it seems to be no problem of
decrypting, but one of displaying.

But additionally, there seems to be a problem with verifying the
signature of such messages: After decrypting, Evolution shows the
message only as encrypted, but not as signed (Button on the bottom of
the message). But when decrypting the message directly with gpg, it
says: gpg: Good signature from So the message is actually
encrypted and signed, but Evolution doesn't handle the signature.

[Bug 139639] Re: Add PySol to Ubuntu Gnome Games

2007-11-22 Thread Frederik Elwert
Yes, PySol is somewhat a replacement for Aisleriot. Plus, it's iterface,
since pure Python, uses TkInter, which makes it not fit very good in the
GNOME desktop.

But I'd agree that PySol has really some advantages in usability when
compared to Aisleriot. E.g., when you finished a game, Aisleriot only
gives you the options to either quit or start a new game. What if the
user wants to have a look at his statistics, but not start a now game?
And PySol can move all cards to the piles by itself, so you don't have
to doubleclick the whole bunch of cards when you already have won.

But I'd suggest that it would be better to split this into feature
requests for Aisleriot, so that they can implement the functions of
PySol that really make a better user experience.

[Bug 138586] Re: Gnometris controls very unresponsive when keys are held down

2007-10-12 Thread Frederik Elwert
I hope this is the same bug, otherwise I'll open a new one:

In Gutsy, (with Compiz and XGL, ATI Card), I notices that this slow
response ist so slow, that it even affects the following blocks: E.g., I
have a block in the right position and speed up falling by pressing
arrow down. Then sometimes even the following few blocks come falling
down uncontrollable. Same with right or left. After some time, the keys
hitted in the meanwhile are executed, i.e., when a block moved left and
I wanted to get it right, the following blocks all move left, until
suddenly one moves right.

This makes the game really unusable. What a shame, regarding the
beatiful new theme...

[Bug 61728] Re: [disks-admin] need to be rewritten with the new API and using hal

There is at lease one more important usecase for disks-admin: When using

Besides that, disks-admin had an informational value: It gave on

basis for a successor? It is currently in universe, but Ubuntu certainly

Public bug reported:

Affects: abiword (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal

Description:

Todays update to version 2.4.4 introduced a couple of GNOME-dependencies
to abiword-plugins. I think it is especially libgoffice, which needs
many GNOME libs, but was not needed for the 2.4.2 plugins.

Since abiword-plugins is part of xubuntu-desktop, and there is an extra
