[Bug 2016906] [NEW] Inactive zombie ghost icons left behind on desktop when copying files

2023-04-18 Thread Gary W Sherwin
Public bug reported:

When copying files between directory windows, occasionally zombie ghost
icons are left on the desktop. These are like holes in the screen with
an icon that appears on top of everything in its covered location, is
not selectable and is not moveable.

[Bug 1832138] Re: Login screen never appears on vmwgfx using bionic kernel 4.15

2019-07-05 Thread Gary Filipski
Tested bionic-proposed with both original VM that exhibited the problem
on upgrade and a separate VM used to test the work-around (uncommenting
WaylandEnable=false in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf).

Both VMs upgraded and ran successfully using
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed.

[Bug 1832138] Re: Login screen never appears on vmwgfx using bionic kernel 4.15

2019-06-20 Thread Gary Filipski
Additional confirmation...

Working under VMware Workstation v12.5.7 running kernel 4.15.0.52:

Having performed the workaround of uncommenting the
WaylandEnable=false...

   - Re-commented the line & rebooted to experience the hang with the
Ubuntu logo before the login screen

   - Using your ppa, installed the test kernel.

   - Rebooted.

Login proceeded normally: Linux linuxTest 4.15.0-53-generic

Thank you!

happens with both HTML and Plain Text messages.

Re: [Bug 1663737] Re: --execute changes following -h to --help

2017-02-13 Thread Gary Filipski
Egmont,

The man page for the version that I have does not mention '--' nor the fact
that the --execute
option is obsolete --- BUT! ... the '--' option *does* work and functions
as desired with
the command-line you gave below... the '-h' is echoed properly.

Thank you for taking the time to look into this.

The man page probably needs to be updated as even the 'Zesty' version still
shows the
--command and --execute options (and no '--') with the same description as
16.04 LTS.

Thanks,
Gary

PS: I've added this text as a comment to bug report.

[Bug 1663737] Re: --execute changes following -h to --help

2017-02-13 Thread Gary Filipski
The man page for the version that I have does not mention '--' nor the fact
that the --execute
option is obsolete --- BUT! ... the '--' option *does* work and functions as
desired with
the command-line you gave... the '-h' is echoed properly.

Thank you for taking the time to look into this.

The man page probably needs to be updated as even the 'Zesty' version still
shows the
--command and --execute options (and no '--') with the same description as
16.04 LTS.

[Bug 1663737] [NEW] --execute changes following -h to --help

2017-02-10 Thread Gary Filipski
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
Release:16.04

gnome-terminal:
  Installed: 3.18.3-1ubuntu1
  Candidate: 3.18.3-1ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 3.18.3-1ubuntu1 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Create a bash script called echoParams.sh somewhere in your current path
(attached):

#!/bin/bash
for param in "$@"
do echo "param '$param'"
done
echo -n "Enter to finish..."
read junk

Execute the following:

$ gnome-terminal --execute echoParams.sh -h

In a new terminal window the output is:

param '--help'
Enter to finish...

... meanwhile, back at the command line:

$ which gnome-terminal
/usr/bin/gnome-terminal

$ gnome-terminal --version
GNOME Terminal 3.18.3

The '-h' is being translated and passed as '--help'

... which is no help at all if the --execute command expects '-h'.

All puns intended.

 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1409032] Re: gvfsd-smb: very high CPU utilisation

2016-08-02 Thread Gary Turnbull
Using Ubuntu 16.04. Issue effects me as well.

I implemented the suggestions in post #29 and #37.

When I open Files, gvfsd-smb-browse maxes out one core at 100% for about
10 minutes.

[Bug 1021375] Re: Nautilus says the USB stick is read only when it is not

2015-03-01 Thread Gary
I just had this problem occur again, I am using 12.04 (still). I also
got it tp work correctly, here is what worked for me (YMMV). I am not
sure all these step are required, but the combination fixed my problem.

1- sudo chmod 755 /media (this was recommended with -R option, but I did not
want that as my raid is mounted under /media)
2- cd
3- mv .config/nautilus .config/nautilus.bak
(the net effect is a new nautilus desktop file is created, for me the delta was
deletion of nautilus-icon-view-auto-layout=true and a change to the
nautilus-icon-view-layout-timestamp value)
4- remove media if it happens to be in
5- logout
6- login
7- insert media and test

Good luck.

[Bug 771896] Re: No way to save current session

2013-09-26 Thread Gary
First, you can't create a single interface for mobile devices and desktops and
who in the hell said they wanted it? MS tried and failed, and so has Ubuntu
with Unity. Some things are just illogical. Second, I used to like Gnome and
used it exclusively and I'm disgusted by all the downgrades and screwups. One
two occasions a simple update has broken Gnome and left me scrambling to get my
system repaired so I can work. So I'm going to try xfce and if I'm not feeling
better about things, switch to a different Linux.
You would think with all these complaints someone would pay attention.

I would like to have someone from Gnome answer these complaints without
saying we think this is better and so do our Moms. A lot of software
is ruined with the Hey, watch this behavior. People that want to run
Unity are people who have simple needs - email, a word processor and a
browser. That is not the majority of Linux users.

[Bug 1015370] Re: when opening a file using gedit, an unwanted blank document tab also opens

2012-08-07 Thread Gary M
I can reproduce this by running gksu gedit after pressing Alt-F2 from
an Ubuntu Studio session.

This opens gedit with an untitled document that is already flagged as modified.
Specifying a file with the gedit command opens that file as well as a modified
untitled document.

Running gksu gedit (or sudo gedit) from bash in the xfce terminal emulator
produces the expected behaviour:
an untitled document that is not yet flagged as modified.
Specifying a file with the gedit command from bash opens that file as well as
an unmodified untitled document. I expected only the file to be opened.

Running gedit from bash or Alt-F2 produces the expected behaviour:
an untitled document that is not yet flagged as modified.
Specifying a file with the gedit command just opens that file, as expected.

My testing in comment 2 was with the precise LTS Ubuntu Studio release.
Testing with a recent quantal daily Desktop live-cd produces similar
results, except that the untitled document is always unmodified when
shown.

WARNING: gnome-keyring:: couldn't connect to: /tmp/keyring-vlN7D3/pkcs11: No

[Bug 529696] Re: [SRU] brasero can't copy audio cd (useless error message)

2012-01-12 Thread gary nelson
I'm getting this error:

error   = 27
message = Some files may be corrupted on the disc
BraseroChecksumImage stopping
BraseroChecksumImage closing connection for BraseroChecksumImageSession error :
Some files may be corrupted on the disc (brasero_burn_record
brasero-burn.c:2856)

after copying a .wav file to a CD (as a data element, not as part of an
audio disk). I'm running 11.10 and as far as I know all my maintenance
is current. now that I think about it, I've have problems copying DVD
video and audio to my optical media since my migration up from 11.

I'm running on a ThinkPad T43 with 2 gig of RAM and an aftermarket DVDRW

I have the logs and I can get this to fail at will if you need some more
to look at. thanks in advance for all your help.

Empathy will not allow adding a Jabber account that does not have two

This possibly started very recently, less than a month I would guess.
