libspectre - 0.2.7-2ubuntu3 does not solve the problem for me. Rather, it replaces the original problem (black background) with another one (nothing displayed, completely white). As before, manually adding showpage at the end of the eps file renders correctly. I confirm the issue with gedit on Karmic 9.10, 32-bit, fresh install.
