recko, the problem is not skype on startup. I don't use skype on startup. This is not MS Windows. You can use any DE, for example: KDE, LXDE, XFCE or any other environment made manualy You do miss the point. Ubuntu comes with GNOME, not KDE, LXDE etc. and gnome-panel and compiz are officially supported, not something in universe. Is there someone expert in python 2.6 2.7 (and viceversa) transition? the problem forward-porting Compiz 0.8.6 to Natty is that Compizconfig 0.8.x works with python 2.6 and I was not able to rebuild it on Natty. From a question retated to this bug: In notification area icons with extension PNG are showed as 1x per 1px icons width extensions XPM are showed normaly. Well, I haved success. I compiled all compiz packages from Maverick in Natty. THIS IS AN EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE - PLEASE GIVE ME FEEDBACK IN PRIVATE NOTE THAT ***UNITY WILL BREAK*** 0. Set Ubuntu classic as your session in GDM 1. Remove all packages related to compiz via synaptic (included libdecoration0, emerald, compizconfig etc) 2. Remove all unity related packages , note ubuntu-desktop will be removed after the step 1, don't worry. 3. Guiodic, could you please explain the procedure for downgrading to compiz 0.8.6 in natty (with ppa and pinning in apt-preferences)? I'm very interested in doing that, and I would be very grateful. Are you sure? :-) Please, consider that compizconfig breaks, so you must configure compiz via gconf-editor. Not to speak for the guy that wanted to practice in C++ using compiz instead of hello world. This is FLOSS. Compiz folks does their work well and we must thank them. The duty of a *distributor* is to bring working software to users, not the last blending edge and unpatched stuff from git. as Stallman would have said Join us now and save the software RMS sings Join us and share the software. But surely he doesn't use Ubuntu and its not-working-at-all-desktop-experience.
