[Bug 1881197] Re: No network usage info presented, always 0 bytes/s.

2020-12-09 Thread Hamish McIntyre-Bhatty
Okay, works for me.

Package version:

3.36.1-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 (amd64)

Details of testing:

I changed the update frequency to 0.5 and 0.25 seconds and the network
graph and stats continued to work, unlike before when the graph stopped
displaying meaningful information.

2020-11-10 Thread Hamish McIntyre-Bhatty
I have the same issue, in my case at least it's definitely the issue you
found Sebastien.

As pointed out at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
system-monitor/+question/693912, Ubuntu is not a rolling release, but it
would improve UX, and as noted at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates updates with simple changes
that don't affect infrastructure may be candidates.

Of course, it's not my decision to make, and if there's no interest I
will instead report to the Linux Mint people, but I figure trying
upstream first is better.

[Bug 1325142] [NEW] failure to update libpam-systemd in 14.04 due to missing logind init script

2014-05-30 Thread hamish
Public bug reported:

Hi,

while running inside an i386 lubuntu 14.04 chroot, upgrading libpam-
systemd to version 204-5ubuntu20.2 fails leaving dpkg in a broken state.
'apt-get -f install' from within the chroot will not fix it, but if the
build is made bootable and put into a iso/VM you can recover that way in
a live session.

the problem seems to be the /var/lib/dpkg/info/libpam-systemd:i386.prerm script
failing to bring down the logind daemon with 'invoke-rc.d systemd-logind stop',
because invoke-rd.d is only looking for the /etc/init.d/ script (doesn't exist)
and not /etc/init/systemd-logind.conf (does exist).

perhaps related to older launchpad bug #1305395 ?

note we are also suffering from a failure with update-initramfs, not sure of
the root cause of that one but I thought I'd mention it in case they were
related, since they both started happening about the same time, a couple weeks
ago. (launchpad bug #1317602)
It all worked ok after the inital releases of 14.04, so something to do with a
package update since then.

thanks,
Hamish

[Bug 964270] Re: Ubuntu forgets keyboard shortcuts after a restart

2012-11-04 Thread Hamish Downer
Another confirmation on 12.10, using Unity. I did not experience this
bug using 12.04.

Interestingly this seems to reset shortcuts where there is a default,
but not new ones. In my case, I replace Shift to workspace right with
Ctrl-Alt-h, rather than Ctrl-Alt-right arrow. (And the rest of the vim
direction keys). This shortcut gets reset. But I also have Ctrl-Alt-m
set (via CCSM) to move a window to the next display port (multi monitor
thing using the compiz Put plugin) as that shortcut survives reboots.

Don't know if that helps narrow it down.

[Bug 964270] Re: Ubuntu forgets keyboard shortcuts after a restart

2012-11-04 Thread Hamish Downer
Doing some more playing, I find that my custom keyboard shortcuts are
set as expected when viewed in gconf-editor (
/apps/metacity/window_keybindings/move_to_workspace_up etc and
/apps/metacity/global_keybindings/switch_to_workspace_up etc) but that
doesn't make compiz (or whatever) use them. The view in the keyboard
shortcuts settings dialog does correspond with what the keys do, and
changing the shortcuts there does change them. Not sure if gconf is
actually meant to be used or not ...

[Bug 449198] Re: No GUI option to change login theme

2012-06-16 Thread hamish
fyi, this works on ubuntu 12.04 to change the gdm login screen
background image:

http://smashingweb.ge6.org/change-the-background-of-gnome-3-gdm-login-
screen/

quoted:

# su - gdm -s /bin/bash
$ dbus-launch

This command will print DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS and
DBUS_SESSION_BUS_PID. We need to export them

$ export
DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS=unix:abstract=/tmp/dbus-Jb433gMQHS,guid=fc14d4bf3d000e38276a5a220d38
$ export DBUS_SESSION_BUS_PID=4283

Check to see if dconf-service is running and if not, start it like this

$ /usr/lib/dconf/dconf-service

Wallpaper

$ GSETTINGS_BACKEND=dconf gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri
$ GSETTINGS_BACKEND=dconf gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background
picture-uri file:///usr/share/backgrounds/gnome/SundownDunes.jpg

You will need to point to a file where the gdm user has permission to read, not
in your home directory.

then as root restart the gdm service.

for precise I had to chown gdm.gdm /var/lib/gdm/.config -R first, as
root owned that not the gdm user, so the gdm user couldn't write the
file.

The resulting /var/lib/gdm/.config/dconf/user file is binary so can't
just edit the config file with a text editor as per 4 decades of UNIX
/etc conventions. (@!#@$!^%~)

have fun,
Hamish

this seems to be a timing-related issue in the driver or kernel

  ## Issue

Pressing Fn+F7 to cycle through monitor configuration produces
unusable monitor configuration on external-monitor-only mode.

External monitor is set to incorrect resolution when it's the only
  active display.

xrandr output does not match resolution of external display that is
actually set.  E.g., xrandr shows 1920x1080@60Hz,  but monitor
status menu shows 1360 x 768 @ 60Hz, which it does not support.

  ## Environment

  - Thinkpad X220 (T61 also fails)

  -  External monitor attached

  ## Steps to reproduce:

  - connect external monitor to ThinkPad X220 (or X61)

  - press Fn+F7 to cycle through modes

  - on External Monitor Only mode, compare resolution of external
monitor as reported by xrandr and the monitor itself.

It would also be useful to capture the X calls that gnome-settings-daemon

 running

 killall gnome-settings-daemon xtrace -o ~/gnome-settings-daemon.xtrace
 /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon

at a terminal.  This should kill the existing daemon and then start a new
one, capturing all the X calls it makes to ~/gnome-settings-daemon.xtrace.

Then, cycle through the fn-f7 options again - both with the displays
panel open, and without, so we get an example of both working and broken
behaviour - and attach the ~/gnome-settings-daemon.xtrace file here.

If this is too complicated, the gsd-debug-randr.log file Sebastian was
asking for above might contain enough information to debug this problem,
so don't worry if it's too much effort.

[Bug 871350] [NEW] Nautilus segfault when opening large directory of photos on camera

2011-10-09 Thread Hamish Downer
Public bug reported:

Nautilus crashed while I was opening a large directory of photos on my
camera (plugged in via USB). It got as far as showing the list of
photos, I scrolled to the bottom, started selecting the photos I wanted
and then it crashed. I found this in /var/log/messages

[Bug 463314] Re: gdm ignores timed/auto login on all but first greeter run

2011-08-22 Thread hamish
@Charlie Kravetz: read the full bug log and try it for yourself. it is
still broken in xubuntu 11.04 which makes ubuntu an unusable option for
kiosk installations where auto-relogin must happen.

in my books that's a rather serious problem.

see subject change by Kees Cook (kees) on 2009-12-03 which diverges
from the chatter in the original report and first bunch of messages in
the report.

i.e. gdm ignores timed/auto login on all but first greeter run ...
it does!

(this is not invalid. this has nothing to do with upgrading any more;
tested on a new install)

thanks,
Hamish

I have a similar (or the same) problem on my X220

I attach an external monitor on HDMI and the external only setting is
a different screen -- on my X201 it can be a mirror screen...

Any workaround likely?

[Bug 404218] Re: rhythmbox won't import mp3 files trough smb

2010-06-10 Thread Hamish
Hi Sebastien

Using the recently updated Rythmbox, it will now see files on a gvfs
share (via SMB). It's *really* slow (when compared to using 9.10), but
it does work.

Good work :)

[Bug 273294] Re: Rhythmbox can not use smb:// as library location

2010-04-30 Thread Hamish
+1 not working for me either: Ubuntu 10.04 with all updates as of
30/4/2010

I have a NAS and store my music on it. It only does cifs/smb sharing. I
want Rhythmbox to be able to access this share! Using fstab is not a
workaround due to another Ubuntu bug (still not resolved after two
years) whereby fstab does not dismount cleanly when using wireless
connections (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-
manager/+bug/211631).

And why is the issue upstream in gnomevfs? Ubuntu does not use
gnomevfs but gvfs.

[Bug 552932] Re: Location window option is missing from nautilus

2010-04-15 Thread Hamish
I agree with the original reporter, this is a regression. I use this for
copying file locations into scripts, etc. Very useful to have this.

The icon which existed in previous versions to change between
breadcrumbs to location bar, is now gone. Why?

You can use CTRL+L to get it back, but this is temporary, and you have
to know about it. The fix mentioned above using gconf-editor is not
exactly user friendly (for any level of user! I have been using Ubuntu
since 6.10 and don't want to have to use gconf-editor to get back this
basic functionality).

Please fix this.

[Bug 508632] Re: Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone

2010-04-15 Thread Hamish
Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 2 with all updates to 15 April 2010.

Can someone please tell me how to type or paste in smb://server/share or
ftp://remoteserver or anything else into the breadcrumbs?

Not having the option to toggle to text input/location bar and making it
STICKY is stupid. I can CTRL-L or Go - Location, then type or paste,
but when I hit Enter it goes back to breadcrumb mode. Grrr...

Please put back the toggle button and make it sticky.

@Wayno - the bug you are experiencing is not this bug, but bug #533775

[Bug 533775] Re: No icon for typing break

2010-03-08 Thread Hamish Downer
Not quite sure about the last question. The icon I'm talking about lives
in the notification area - I've never seen anything about the typing
monitor appear using the indicator applet.

(As I understand it the notification area is an area in the top panel.
For me it currently contains a Dropbox icon, the network manager icon
and the (broken) typing monitor icon. The indicator applet is what makes
messages appear on screen temporarily. My answer above might be wrong if
I have the wrong names in my head).

In case it helps with tracking down the problem I tried using lsof to
see if it had an image file open, but all I could see were a few icon-
theme.cache files. I also tried running gnome-typing-monitor from the
command line to see if there were any errors but there weren't. And I've
checked /var/log/ but not found any references to the typing monitor
there.

Any other ideas for what to check? Do we know what the icon file should
be so I can check if it exists? Or is it just generated on the fly?

Here is the lsof output filtering out the library files:

[Bug 533775] Re: No icon for typing break

2010-03-08 Thread Hamish Downer
Ah yes that did it, thank you. The volume bit has also been added by
that, which I hadn't noticed was missing.

I think I removed it in karmic as it was just the message applet
(envelope icon) and I thought that I was just getting rid of the instant
messaging thing - I don't use any instant messaging (well, I use irssi
on a server but that doesn't link to the panel).

So I'm not sure if it counts as some sort of bug as it won't affect new
installs or upgrades where the default panel was left alone. But I
imagine there are a few folk who would have made the same choice as me
without realising the full implications.

So I'll let you choose whether to close it or if it is worth someone
looking at a way to avoid the problem I had. At least this report is
here so that google can help people. I'll add the volume thing to the
title to help people find it.

[Bug 391617] Re: Karmic Koala repeats graphic login screen

2009-11-03 Thread Hamish
Similar (same?) problem. Running Karmic x64:
- Login window appears
- Put in password, hit enter
- Looks like it is loading, but returns me to login

This will happen anywhere from 3-10+ times before it logs me in. It
isn't an auth failure as I deliberately entered in wrong credentials and
that shows up as auth failure. This just drops me back without any
error.

2009-10-03 Thread Hamish Downer
This was working fine for me for a while, but this behaviour has
happened for the last two boots, since the updates on the 1st of
October. I did

$ sudo start gdm
start: Job is already running

at this point Ctrl-Alt-F7 does nothing, but Ctrl-Alt-F1 thru F6 work
fine

$ sudo restart gdm

gdm starts normally.

I am on amd64, upgraded from jaunty and I use the ubuntu-boot ppa.

[Bug 398743] Re: (Jaunty) ekiga 3.2.0 won't connect to Nodephone (Australian VoIP provider)

2009-08-10 Thread Hamish
Hi Yannick

I have installed Karmic Alpha 3 in a VirtualBox VM and Ekiga 3.2.5 works
fine.

Is there any way that we can get Ekiga 3.2.5 into the repositories for
Jaunty? I really would like to have this working now on Jaunty 9.04,
rather than having to wait for Karmic to arrive.

Thanks,

[Bug 398743] [NEW] (Jaunty) ekiga 3.2.0 won't connect to Nodephone (Australian VoIP provider)

2009-07-13 Thread Hamish
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ekiga

Hi

I cannot get Ekiga 3.2.0 to register with Nodephone, an Australian VoIP
provider. I know there is no problem with the account or logging in, as
when I use another VoIP programme such as Zopier, it works fine.

uname -r
2.6.28-13-generic

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

Can we get the current version of Ekiga (3.2.5) included in the repos
(even if in jaunty-proposed) as I have ascertained that this bug (the
inability to connect to Nodephone) is fixed in that release.

Thanks,
Hamish Taylor

[Bug 377185] Re: No Tools menu in Ekiga client

2009-05-17 Thread Hamish
Hi Yannick

Thanks for responding, but with all due respect, did you actually look
at the screenshot I included with this bug report? The answer you point
to did not address the fact that I have no Tools menu.

I followed the configuration wizard and set up an account with
DiamondCard. Ekiga tells me that everything is fine with both of the
accounts - status is registered with providers. However, I do not have a
Tools menu, so I can't place PC-to-phone calls or SMSes.

Can you please look at the screenshot and tell me how to get to the
Tools menu, so I can call landlines and SMS? Otherwise I am going to
have to give up on Ekiga.

I can also confirm this is happening on a SECOND machine running Jaunty
9.04, with the same package.

[Bug 377185] Re: No Tools menu in Ekiga client

2009-05-17 Thread Hamish
Hi Yannick

I am sorry for being so blunt. It now seems that we have an issue with
documentation not being up-to-date with the current Ubuntu Jaunty
version.

The documentation refers to the Tools menu, which you tell me is not
there by design. I have no problem with that being the case, however I
would like to know how, in version 3.2, I can initiate an SMS?

Previous documentation tells me that I can set my default number to my
own number, so that an SMS through Diamondcard appears to have come from
my own number not some SIP assigned number. With no Tools menu, and
nothing in the Preferences dialogs, I can't find how to make this all
happen. How can I find the PC-To-Phone configuration window?

[Bug 191027] Re: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument

2008-04-15 Thread Hamish
Hi everyone

I hope this helps, but updates are very important. When I downloaded and
installed Hardy Beta, PulseAudio didn't work on my laptop, with audio
issues and volume control issues. These have all been fixed in the weeks
following. So, can I suggest that you install all updates (incl the
kernel ones, which I think is now 2.6.24-16) and try it all again?

Hope this helps :-)
