[Bug 2018539] [NEW] File selector extremely slow

2023-05-04 Thread Hugo Squelch
Public bug reported:

When you try to upload/download a file in an application (e.g. Firefox,
Signal, etc) the file selector that opens is extremely slow to appear,
search and change directory.

Often times, if I try to search for a file in it, I have to wait 10 or
more second before the letters I typed appear, and most of the time the
last letter I pressed when typing, will appear before the rest of what I
wrote, meaning I have to wait for my query to be deleted before I re-
type it again.

This has only just started since upgrading to Ubuntu 23.04. I noticed
that Nautilus has been faster in general since the update, but in the
file selector specifically, it's become unusable.

[Bug 1998099] [NEW] gnome-shell doesn't recognise Inhibit shortcuts permission

2022-11-28 Thread Hugo Squelch
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1997481 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1997481

Public bug reported:

When trying to use a program that tries to make use of the `Inhibit
Shortcuts` permission, for example a virtual machine program like virt-
manager, gnome-shell ignores the permission and the shortcuts you press
which should be inhibited/changed to do something else by the program,
activate the gnome-shell's system shortcut instead.

This means that when I am trying to alt+tab inside my virtual machine,
it instead alt tabs to a different window on my host rather than on my
guest OS.

I believe this problem is fixed on gnome-shell 43.1. Could you please
update gnome-shell43.1 to fix this issue.

[Bug 1478217] [NEW] can't pair bluetooth keyboard, phone doesn't show code.

2015-07-25 Thread Hugo Venhorst
Public bug reported:

1) Device: Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition
 OS: Ubuntu 15.04 (r68) - armhf (20150724-020304)
2) Bluez version 4.101-0ubuntu25
 indicator-bluetooth version 0.0.6+14.10.20141006-0ubuntu1

3) When trying to connect a bluetooth keyboard (SilverCrest SBT 3.0 A1),
pairing doesn't follow correct procedure.
On other devices (Android 5.1.1 on Nexus 10; Ubuntu 15.04 on BTO laptop) a 6
digit number is displayed, which needs to be typed on the Bluetooth keyboard,
followed by pressing [Enter].

4) On Ubuntu touch, a dialogue appears asking to enter a 4 digit PIN on
the phone. Default is '' and at first the phone says the device is
connected, but the phone does not respond to any input from the
keyboard. After some time the phone indicates the device is not
connected.

All of this is similarly described in this askubuntu article:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/625533/how-to-pair-external-bluetooth-
keyboard-to-ubuntu-touch-bq-phone, which has not received any answers as
of yet.

I am willing to follow instructions and report back results. i have adb
shell installed on my laptop, and Terminal app installed on the phone.
Developer mode is on.

[Bug 11334]

2015-02-25 Thread 2-hugo-q
Stop complaining about users not wanting selection-based copying. It
has no negative impact if you don't use it, and users most likely won't
notice it.

Let me shed some light on this (since there also seem to be so many
references to this bug everywhere).

Selected text gets copied to PRIMARY, and get pasted *only* by pressing mouse2.
If you press ctrl+c, whatever is selected is copied to CLIPBOARD. Only
pressing ctrl+v (or selecting copy from some menu) will get CLIPBOARD pasted.
PRIMARY and CLIPBOARD never interact; ever! So if you don't want
selection-based copying, just don't press m2, and you're done, there's no need
to change anything, and it doesn't affect the usage of CLIPBOARD.

[Bug 1245468]

2013-11-13 Thread Hugo Pereira Da Costa
I am closing this bug report
Last few posted crashes are unrelated to oxygen-gtk: they are libgobject.
I guess it is just someone pushing the submit report button.
So that it brings no new information
(besides java coredumps also have very little information to start with)
finally,
- none of the oxygen-gtk devevloppers are able to reproduce the crash,
- The original (oxygen-gtk related) has been said to be fixed after some update
(and was likely upstream too).

To the others, sorry for the frustration
This should be reported to either
- glib
- your distribution

[Bug 1245468]

2013-11-13 Thread Hugo Pereira Da Costa
Well:
- the fact that it happens in oxygen-gtk does not mean it is an oxygen-gtk bug:
just means the code path followed by oxygen-gtk triggers a bug that can be
anywhere in the chain
- nowhere in the core dump, as far as I can tell, is oxygen-gtk mentionned.
(sorry in advance if I missed it).
(nor are there any function calls mentioned, nor line numbers)
I at least, do not know how to use this report to go and actually debug the
code.

[Bug 1075286] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon crashed with sigabrt in raise()

2012-11-05 Thread Hugo Venhorst
Public bug reported:

what i was doing:
- I was watching a fullscreen youtube video (length of the video was about an
hour, and I was halfway through)

What happened:
- the video stalled but remained fullscreen. ESC didn't work, ALT+TAB did bring
Unity to the front, and showed the window switcher. the window switcher
responded normally, and the selected window was supposedly focused, but the
video stayed in front and fullscreen.
- HDD read/write went nuts.

what i did next:
- i went to VT2, logged in and ran Top. it revealed gnome-settings-daemon to be
taking 80% CPU (the other 20% was devided between Xorg, Thunderbird Firefox and
other)
- i tried going back to VT7, but the graphics was messed up. CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE
didn't work. back to VT2 worked.
- i tried to kill gnome-settings-daemon. no go.
- i did sudo killall -u user which effectively logged me out.
- I logged back in. upon log-in i got a crash report. it didn't open Launchpad.
- I did ubuntu-bug gnome-settings-daemon and reported manually.

- i restarted the video and watched the remaining half fullscreen
without trouble. i have no idea about reproducing this.

Hugo,

Run in a terminal:
sudo apt-get upgrade; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -y upgrade;

then reboot, reinstall Gimp, and see if that fixes the problem.

[Bug 435550] Re: scrollwheel should scroll not browse

2010-11-02 Thread Hugo Buddel
From the changelog of 2.9.1 and the corresponding bugreport (131416) it
seems that the idea was to navigate through the images only in fit mode.

Perhaps a modifier key such as Alt. for either scrolling or navigating
would be nice?

In the meantime, does anyone know a (fast) image viewer that allows one
to scroll with the scroll wheel? (I reinstalled gthumb because I knew it
had this feature...)

2010-05-14 Thread Hugo Buddel
I recalled the problem has existed in more applications, but maybe I was
mistaken. At the moment in Lucid I can only reproduce it in gnome-
terminal and not in any other gtk app like the gimp, synamptic. (Which
is inconsistent with the OP, but consistent with the 'misfiled bug'
linked here.) What other applications suffer from this bug?

[Bug 204202] Re: gnome-terminal ignores current keyboard layout for ctrl+key shortcuts

2010-05-14 Thread Hugo Buddel
Doug Kelly: I tried your solution, but it does not seem to work for me
on my fresh Lucid install.

Just tried something else: First layout indian, second Qwerty and then
started a ping from the second layout. I could not figure out how to
quit the ping (except 'killall ping'), since all my ctrl-c keystrokes
printed indian characters. That cannot be useful under any circumstances
it seems to me.

There are bug reports about this problem existing for other gtk apps as
well, but I have not been able to reproduce the problem anywhere else
besides gnome-terminal. Anyone knows another app?

E.g. similar, more general bug report:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=599894
And a later report that the fix for the above causes the symptons we see:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=602137
It is not clear to me whether this is indeed the same issue or just the same
symptoms.

I cannot imagine that this is the intended behavior, for one because now
it is different between gnome-terminal and xterm. But if it is, it
should be more clearly documented. It is not intuitive that if you add a
new layout that whether the ctrl- key mappings change depends on the
order of the layouts.

[Bug 204202] Re: gnome-terminal ignores current keyboard layout for ctrl+key shortcuts

2010-05-14 Thread Hugo Buddel
I hacked together my own keyboard layout indicator that just rearranges
the layouts in gconf so the selected one is on top. It is kinda a
kludge, but it works. (Ensure the gnome indicator is set to use the top
one and don't touch it again.)

I do not intend to create a proper applet out of this, but it might be
useful to others as well. And I think anyone with some python experience
can create something nice out of it, maybe someone will.

[Bug 123460] Re: Rhythmbox:Error while saving song information:Internal GStreamer problem

2010-05-11 Thread Hugo Hidalgo
Same problem here as Voltaire with Ubuntu 10.04 and Rhythmbox 0.12.8.

It seemed frozen for a while, but after a long delay it allowed me to
close the error message window and then after another long delay another
one appeared (again frozen for a while and then let me close the window
and so on). After about 20 minutes it finished the process and I
unmarked the Watch my library for new files option in the preferences.
I logged out, and restarted rhythmbox. This time was really frozen. I
erased the file ~/.local/share/rhythmbox/rhythmdb.xml as suggested by
Voltaire and restarted the program. Added all my libraries again and
closed. Logged out and logged in and restarted rhythmbox. I seems to be
working fine now (but of course it won't look for new songs).

[Bug 488048] Re: gdm overrides keyboard layout in no password mode

2010-05-10 Thread Hugo Buddel
Thank you for reopening (I didn't know what 'Triaged' meant), and also
for your helpful comments.

The new bug description makes sense for your technical point of view,
but so much for the uninitiated user. With this description I might have
had a harder time finding this entry with your insightful replies that
helped me fix the issue on my own computer. An end user point of view
bug seems appropriate on the Ubuntu launchpad section.

Also, from the original description I think the technical bug (and
subsequent solution) is the other way around: changing keyboard layout
with gnome-keyboard-properties does not propagate to gdm.

As in either both apps should change both settings always (which gdm
already does), or they should never change each others settings (which
gnome-keyboard-properties does). Originally I would opt for the latter,
but reading the discussions, the former seems to be closer to the
intended behaviour, so it is gnome-keyboard-properties that should be
fixed IMHO, not gdm.

E.g. a scenario where the current proposed solution will lead to a strange
situation:
- User changes to new layout in gdm and uses it pleasantly in gnome for months.
- User decides that a password is not required to log in.
- Suddenly his keyboard layout is changed.
- User files bug report: 'gdm does *not* override keyboard layout in no
password mode' :)

[Bug 488048] Re: keyboard layout needs to be reset after each login

2010-05-09 Thread Hugo Buddel
This is definitely a bug and should be reopened. Some points: 1) gdm
also adds the new layout with an implicit selection and 2) it shouldn't
add it at all and 3) if it does, it shouldn't set it as default.

1) I ran into this scenario:
- default layout selected on installation is alt-intl
- created new user with 'password not asked on login'
- new user chooses dvorak-intl as default (only) layout
The new user had never even seen the gdm keyboard selector, but the default
always was alt-intl, which was unwanted.

2) There should be one place for setting the layout for the session. Now the
situation is that you can select layouts in gdm and in the
gnome-keyboard-properties, of which the first one can be hidden. (The only way
I could find it was remove the 'password not asked on login', then logout,
change the layout, login again, change the password settings again. Didn't know
about the .dmrc file.)

It seemed like the changes in the gnome-keyboard-properties are simply
ignored. If a user removes a layout, the user does that because he or
she does not want to use the layout. Ubuntu should not go behind the
back of the user and reenable a layout that was explicitly removed.

3) It might happen that the user does want to login using the system default
and then use their own default for their session. E.g. 'latin'
username/password to login, russian for the session or something like that.

Even if the layout used by gdm is already included in the gnome-
keyboard-properties list but not as default, gdm will override this
order and change the default. It should be possible to have two
different defaults.

[Bug 491199] Re: keyboard layout changes when restart

2010-05-09 Thread Hugo Buddel
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 488048 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/488048

gdm adds the layout used in gdm to the gnome settings. I setup a user
with 'password not asked on login', this user never got a chance to tell
gdm that he wanted a different layout and it was quite hard to figure
out why the gnome defaults kept being reset.

I think this is a duplicate of this bug:

[Bug 555558] Re: Swedish keyboard layout resets to english on reboot with bluetooth keyboard

2010-05-09 Thread Hugo Buddel
Perhaps this is related to this report?:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/488048

gdm adds the layout used there as default in gnome, even when no
password is asked at login. This is similar but slightly different from
this problem, but maybe they are related. (Seems that the english layout
is not added, but that swedish is changed into english.)

[Bug 577836] [NEW] keyboard layout indicator does not distinguish between layouts of the same country

2010-05-09 Thread Hugo Buddel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

I use two keyboard layouts: alt-intl and dvorak-intl, which both show as
'USA' in the keyboard layout indicator.

1: The indicator cannot be used to distinguish what layout is used. In
Jaunty this was 'fixed' by appending a '2' to the second USA layout.

2: I don't actually type 'USAian', but Dutch or English. I don't see a
reason to tie a keyboard layout to a language, let alone a country. Why
not just show an indicator of the actual layout?

[Bug 488048] Re: keyboard layout needs to be reset after each login

2010-05-09 Thread Hugo Buddel
I read up a bit in these threads (where Martin Pitt also contributes a
lot)

always overrides keyboard layout variants
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=572765
Try harder to use the keyboard layout passed by gdm
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=585290

I think the one thing that is overlooked, is that some users never see
the gdm selector. To not require a password at login (or login
automatically) is an option in the Lucid installation, so I think this
is not an uncommon situation. The problem also occurs when there is no
.dmrc file.

These users will not be able to change their default keyboard layout, at
least that will be their experience. Therefore I think this bug should
be reopened, but I'm quite new to launchpad so I'm not sure whether it
is appropriate for me to do that.

[Bug 518701] Re: Read receipt is not sent

I have the opposite experience (new bug or related?):

Case 1: receipt asked. Click no -- receipt sent.
Case 1: receipt asked. Click yes -- receipt sent (with slightly different
subject).

Case 3: In Preferences - Mail Accounts - [account] - Defaults I set Never
for Send message receipts option.
Send a mail including a request -- receipt is sent.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Set send message receipts to Never or Ask. (didn't test the 3rd case)
2. Send yourself a mail including a message receipt (insert - request read
receipt)
3. Read the mail, wait a bit, and find you have read receipt.

[Bug 486722] [NEW] Resolution for login window and user session autoconfigured to wrong resolution on fresh installation

2009-11-22 Thread hugo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

When I install Ubuntu I am autoconfigured the wrong resolution for my 1024x768
screen (1600x1200). In System-Preferences-Display I can change the resolution
to 1024x768 but the refresh rate is stuck at 0hz (Impossible) and the monitor
is identified as Unknown. After this adjustment the session is in the correct
resolution.
Unfortunately the System-Preferences-Display adjustment does not effect the
login dialogue which is still configured to 1600x1200. This means I am unable
to see all of the features of the display window because they are situated off
the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
Before the Login Screen appears there is the loading screen (Brown with the
lights going along a line under the logo for Ubuntu) and this is also set to
1600x1200.

This is a GUI bug in the New Address Book dialog.
Steps I followed :
- In the main window, File menu - New - Address Book
- The New Address Book dialog appears, address book type is set to CouchDB
and CouchDB specific options are displayed below
- Change the type from CouchDB to On This Computer (or anything else)
- The Server part of CouchDB specific options remains displayed in addition
to the current specified type options
What should normally happen :
The CouchDB server options should not remain displayed.

I totally agree with this opinion!!

The first thing the users tend to do when they want to delete, or to

It was the first thing I tried and I am sure there's many more users
like myself and Rune!

Please address this... This isn't a design problem... This is an
