[Bug 873191] Re: Ubuntu starts with lowest brightness on HP G62[regression]
I came across a suggestion to a brightness issue on a different machine that was fixed by setting GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX= to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=acpi_os_name=Microsoft Windows XP. Apparently fooling the bios into thinking its running Windows frees up more facilities including control of brightness. To make the adjustment to Grub, go to a terminal, sudo gedit etc/default/grub will put the grub file into gedit, find the line and edit it and save. Then in the terminal sudo update-grub. Not yet tried it because I need more time in case I lose my screen again! But someone else might want to. Some more details of my set up below. (Note I currently have acpi off as part of a different more complex fix and hope to be able to get it back on to stop my laptop overheating and running the battery down in 10 minutes!) ian@ian-HP-G62-Notebook-PC:~$ cat /proc/cmdline BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-32-generic root=UUID=9ed9a092-9789-4941-adb9-7bfc021fc975 ro quiet splash text acpi_osi=linux acpi=off vt.handoff=7 ian@ian-HP-G62-Notebook-PC:~$ ls /sys/class/backlight/*/ actual_brightness brightness max_brightness subsystem uevent bl_power device power type ian@ian-HP-G62-Notebook-PC:~$ sudo lspci -vnn | grep -A10 VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0046] (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:1439] Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 19 Memory at b000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4M] Memory at a000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M] I/O ports at 3050 [size=8] Expansion ROM at unassigned [disabled] Capabilities: [90] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit- Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 2 Capabilities: [a4] PCI Advanced Features Kernel driver in use: i915 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/873191 Title: Ubuntu starts with lowest brightness on HP G62[regression] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/873191/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 873191] Re: Ubuntu starts with lowest brightness on HP G62[regression]
Bug is still present in 12.10 Beta 1. I have managed an ACPI work around but it is not satisfactory because it leads to overheating and a battery that lasts about 15 minutes! There must be thousands of these HP intel driver laptops affected. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/873191 Title: Ubuntu starts with lowest brightness on HP G62[regression] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/873191/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 873191] Re: Ubuntu starts with lowest brightness on HP G62[regression]
I get a complete blank screen with HP G62 on boot. Even if fiddle to get a visible screen it is restricted to 1024 x 768 so there is definitely something wrong driver installation wise. My hardware reports intel display description: VGA compatible controller product: Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 2 bus info: pci@:00:02.0 version: 02 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=i915 latency=0 resources: irq:42 memory:b000-b03f memory:a000-afff ioport:3050(size=8) Is there Ati hardware here too? Lot's of references. [Bug 305546] Re: Nautilus crashing/freezing when opening folder with svg file
I'm on Karmic because my hardware isn't supported by higher versions - ATi 4250 which kills booting on later versions. .svg preview kills nautilus and it really needs fixing. Non-techs here can't understand why their desktop background suddenly disappears! I have set my Nautilus preview option to not display files 500k in preview because it seems to be the bigger Inkscape files that cause problems. Its a work around but not a satisfactory fix. I'd fix it myself if I knew how! Disable preview for .svg should not be that hard and it is better to display a generic icon for one filetype than crash the whole system. Another workaround if you can use samba is to put the files on a smb share because then icons are not displayed. -- Nautilus crashing/freezing when opening folder with svg file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/305546 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 409409] Re: nautilus hangs on preview of SVG with embedded TIF
Its not just Tiffs. I have a file with no tiffs in it that does it. These are .pngs but the version without embedding does it too so I'm not even convinced that embedding is relevant.
