[Bug 1792085] Re: MTP not working/very slow on Bionic

2020-01-29 Thread Jarno Suni
It is odd that this slowness happens with some directories, but not with
others. For example it happens on a directory with 7 files; file names
consist of letters, '-', digits and '.'. ls command on that directory
takes about 5 minutes. But there are other directories (where there are
more or less files) with which there is no such delay. Do you have any
clue why is this?

[Bug 1624644] Re: By default settings unattended-upgrade does not automatically remove packages that become unused in conjunction with updating by other software

2018-04-03 Thread Jarno Suni
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

   * Update-manager and unattended-upgrades install many kernel packages during
the lifetime of a release but does not remove them automatically leading to
those packages filling disk space potentially completely filling /boot and
making the system unable to install updates or even boot.
   * Stable release users are impacted by this bug for years and their systems
already collected many autoremovable unused kernel packages, thus they would
benefit from backporting the fix greatly.
   * The bug is fixed by removing autoremovable (not currently booted) kernel
packages when running unattended-upgrades or update-manager. Update manager
offers the kernel removals when there are other updates to be installed.

  [Test Case]

   1. Install kernel packages to be removed, mark them auto-installed and
  run apt's kernel hook script to make apt consider them autoremovable:

    sudo apt install -y linux-image-extra-4.4.0-92-generic
linux-image-extra-4.4.0-93-generic
    sudo apt-mark auto linux-image-extra-4.4.0-92-generic
linux-image-extra-4.4.0-93-generic
    sudo /etc/kernel/postinst.d/apt-auto-removal

   2. Also downgrade a package to be upgraded:

-    sudo apt-get install -y ca-certificates=20160104ubuntu1
+    sudo apt-get install -y --allow-downgrades ca-
+ certificates=20160104ubuntu1

   3. (update-manager). Run update-manager and observe that kernel
  packages are offered for removal in Details of updates.

    sudo update-manager

   4. (update-manager) Click on Install Now and observe that the kernel
  packages are removed.

   3. (unattended-upgrades, the fix comes in an update of u-u) Run
  unattended-upgrades manually and observe the removal of the
  autoremovable kernel packages:

    sudo unattended-upgrade -v

  [Regression Potential]

   The change may cause update-manager or unattanded-upgrades to remove
  used kernel packages or fail to install other package updates.

  [Other Info]

  The unattended-upgrades fix is uploaded with many other fixes and those
  may cause regressions in other areas in unattended-upgrades.

  [Original bug text]

  When using default settings for unattended-upgrade i.e.
  Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-Unused-Dependencies "false";
  # default "false"
  Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-New-Unused-Dependencies "true";
  # default "true"
  in configuration file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades,
  unattended-upgrade is unable to remove packages that become unused in
conjunction with updating by other software such as update-manager or apt
full-upgrade. This is because unattended-upgrade compares the list of unneeded
packages before and after it upgrades packages to detect which packages are new
unused ones.

  Consequently, if user installs new kernels using e.g. update-manager,
  the excessive kernels will not be removed by unattended-upgrade, and
  eventually (small) /boot will become full.

  Expected behavior: handle removing of unused packages differently at
  least until other package management software installed by default can
  handle removing of new unused packages.

2018-04-03 Thread Jarno Suni
Yes, it is good that update-manager can do removing, as that is what
most people use anyway. linux-purge might still have some use e.g. if
for some reason /boot becomes full, or there are non-autoremovable
kernel packages (which may happen in 14.04 even with kernels installed
using update-manager Bug #1439769).

Brian, I tested the update-manager version you told. It is true that
update-manager removes the unused packages, but step 3. (unattended-
upgrades) does not remove the unused kernels.

I add failed tag as this bug is originally about unattended-upgrades.

Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-Unused-Dependencies "true";

It will remove the third newest kernel, but later, when the one you

2017-09-21 Thread Jarno Suni
Brian, however, as you installed the kernel by apt-get install, the
kernel becomes manually installed, and will not later be removed by
'sudo apt autoremove', unless you change it to be marked as
automatically installed.

I question the use of 'sudo apt autoremove' in this case. If its action was the
desired one, setting
Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-Unused-Dependencies "false";
would be the setting to use, instead of the current default
Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-New-Unused-Dependencies "true";
Balint Reczey tries to explain in #11 why that setting is not desired.

more difficult to implement.

[Bug 1536237] Re: gnome-screensaver-command --lock starts the daemon

2016-01-24 Thread Jarno Suni
Well, here (in Xubuntu Linux) it launches automatically:

$ killall light-locker
light-locker: no process found
$ gnome-screensaver --version
gnome-screensaver 3.6.1
$ ps aux | grep [g]nome-screensaver
$ gnome-screensaver-command --lock
$ ps aux | grep [g]nome-screensaver
myusername9731  0.0  0.7 470112 30284 ?Sl   18:26   0:00
/usr/bin/gnome-screensaver --no-daemon
$ killall gnome-screensaver
$ killall gnome-screensaver
gnome-screensaver: no process found

It is odd, since the command line tells --no-daemon is used as a command
line argument.

[Bug 1536237] [NEW] gnome-screensaver-command --lock starts the daemon

2016-01-20 Thread Jarno Suni
Public bug reported:

1) gnome-screensaver not running, light-locker not running
2) run ` gnome-screensaver-command --lock`

What happens: screen locks and the daemon starts and remains running after

similar case.

[Bug 1389001] Re: Can not copy files by cp from Samsung S5 Mini in GVFS in MTP mode

2014-11-11 Thread Jarno Suni
I wouldn't need partial copying, but I wish gvfs-copy could preserve
modification time and copy only files that are not already in the
destination. (Something like cp --update --recursive
--preserve=timestamps ) Or at least copy only files that are not (by
same name) in the destination.

[Bug 1264102] Re: gvfs takes ages to list SMB directory content from VLC

2014-11-03 Thread Jarno Suni
No, if it was a GVFS bug, it would occur also when I request Kaffeine to
play the file. In the bug report I did not tell anything about the speed
of listing directory content. I did not ask VLC to list files in the
directory, but to play a file that is located there.

The bug may occur when I browse files in Thunar file manager (1.6.3) and
use open with feature to play a file by VLC. Effectively, Thunar adds
a path under /run/user/ as an argument for VLC or Kaffeine. If I use
PCManFM (1.2.0) to open with, a smb-url is used, instead, and then VLC
does not have such a delay before playback. On the other hand Kaffeine
can not play such a smb-url.

The bug still exists in VLC 2.1.4-0-g2a072be

I have a similar problem with a Samsung smart phone in Ubuntu Studio

can not open the same (source) files for reading by e.g. VLC. In

I have is rw access, but I can not even copy the files by cp: cannot

The bug reporter used totem-gstreamer, not the xine backend. As for

(http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=1913036). But I am
using the open source nv driver and have this problem in Jaunty.

[Bug 378300] Re: gnome-volume-control does not update Toggle audio recording from Capture icon if the setting is changed from another application

2009-06-15 Thread Jarno Suni
It is reproducable.

1) open gnome-volume-control
2) check Capture track in preferences.
3) select Recording tab
4) run qamix
5) check Full in View menu
6) choose Capture tab
7) place windows side by side
8) toggle Activate below Capture track in qamix.
What happens: Toggle audio recording from Capture icon below Capture track in
gnome-volume-control does not toggle.
Expected behavior: Toggle audio recording from Capture icon toggles.

[Bug 42052] Re: Screen not locked on resume from hibernate/suspend

2008-12-16 Thread Jarno Suni
In 8.10:

In Gnome:
You can get screen locked in Gnome, it you check Lock screen... in
Screensaver preferences.

In Xfce4:
Additionally choose Power Management in Screensaver preferences and choose a
way to suspend/hibernate.
You can not use the Ask me option in Power Management preferences like above
(or you can, but it doesn't lock screen when you resume). Then use that way to
suspend/hibernate. In summary: whenever you suspend/hibernate using the Quit
dialog, screen will not be locked.

[Bug 41871] Re: volume slider should not use PCM but software mixer or master volume

2008-09-24 Thread Jarno Suni
I remember I could change gxine's mixer device to be software mixer, but
I don't remember what alsa_mixer_name I used anymore. I remember I got
some hint from xmms's settings dialog, but I can't install it anymore in
Ubuntu 8.04 to refresh my memory. I think software mixer would be great,
as by that you can set relative volumes of different sound sources
individually and software mixer has effect in all sound card outputs so
changing software mixer setting keeps their relative volume same.

[Bug 160866] Re: Hue color Contrast way off on Video apps.

2008-03-10 Thread Jarno Suni
Does it help if you change the video driver/plugin/output_module from
default/auto?
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2896078postcount=2
Don't know how to do it for totem-xine, though.

[Bug 198030] Re: brasero does not check disc integrity right

2008-03-04 Thread Jarno Suni
Brasero 0.7.1 tells the disc is not corrupted, if I give it the MD5 sum
file. BTW Brasero offers option to check integrity without separately
specified MD5 file. How can it check integrity then?

[Bug 198030] [NEW] brasero does not check disc integrity right

2008-03-03 Thread Jarno Suni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

I burned a disc of
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/downloads/dft32_v412_b01.iso and
later checked its integrity by Brasero. (Brasero ejected and quitted
after burning due to my selection, so I had to restarted brasero to
check.) It said its md5 sum is not the same as one I calculated by
md5sum of the iso file. But command dd if=/dev/cdrom of=file.iso
bs=1024 for unmounted cdrom gave me matching file.iso.

brasero 0.6.1-0ubuntu1
xubuntu 7.10

[Bug 185181] Re: Evince takes all CPU resources by moving thumbs in side pane forth and back

2008-03-02 Thread Jarno Suni
I didn't mean the size of the thumbnails, but the size of the Xfce panel
on top. Computer won't lock up, but takes unnecessarily lot CPU
recources, as you can see in the screenshot. What you can't see in the
screenshot is that the thumbnails are vibrating back and forth in small
radius.

Specifications:

CPU is 1.5GHz Intel Celeron M.

$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML
Express Graphics Controller (rev 03)

I am using intel driver in Gutsy.

[Bug 185181] Re: Evince takes all CPU resources by moving thumbs in side pane forth and back

2008-03-01 Thread Jarno Suni
It doesn't freeze, but takes much cpu time while moving thumbnails back
and forth rapidly. I think the issue has something to do with the
algorithm that calculates position of thumbnails.

I can reproduce the issue in the case of the attached screenshot. Note
that the size of the top panel is se 42 or less pixels; panel items keep
it equally high then.

[Bug 185181] Re: Evince takes all CPU resources by moving thumbs in side pane forth and back

2008-01-26 Thread Jarno Suni
I could again, but it took several minutes of trying. Maybe it is
related to the fact that thumbnails seem to move a bit during they are
being drawn sometimes. How can I take benefit of evince-gtk-dbg to
determine where the bug is?

[Bug 185181] Re: Evince takes all CPU resources by moving thumbs in side pane forth and back

2008-01-25 Thread Jarno Suni
It was this file:
http://www.pentaxslr.com/files/scms_docs//AF540FGZ_web.pdf

$ md5sum AF540FGZ_web.pdf
3a93f769a67f33e82185b4f0b080a8ef  AF540FGZ_web.pdf

I uninstalled evince and installed evince-gtk now. I tried it with the
file now and I could reproduce the issue. It took some dragging the
scroll bar and using mouse wheel to scroll, too. The bug is not easy to
reproduce.

[Bug 53448] Re: [Dapper] Sound Recorder doesn't respect input selection on second record

2007-05-27 Thread Jarno Suni
I have tested in Dapper and Feisty.

Sound card: SBLive! Value [CT4832]
$ lspci | grep Creative Labs
:00:0f.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev
06)
:00:0f.1 Input device controller: Creative Labs SB Live! MIDI/Game Port
(rev 06)

In Dapper:

Patch: launch gnome-alsamixer. Uncheck all recs except your choise of input.
After that the sound recorder will automatically switch to right input when you
start recording (althought sometimes when two rec chosen and then recorded, and
then one rec is chosen, it can not choose the right input). On the other hand,
I could only record microphone when rec checked for Capture (and Record from
input: Capture in sound recorder). It happened a few times, after that I lost
ability to record, or strictly speaking, recording became is very low.
Different mixers are not well synced. When rec is checked in gnome-alsamixer,
Capture and AC97 sliders affect in line out 1 when I talk to microphone.

In Feisty:

Recording second time resets input to be AC97. I can not play my recordings by
the sound recorder.
I can record by audacity, if rec is checked for capture in gnome-alsamixer.
Playing with Microphone, Capture, and AC97 settings affects in line out 1 when
I talk to microphone.

Very odd thing is that the recording ability seems to change at times. I
thought in the beginning that it would be enough adjust microphone
setting in a mixed and choose record from input: Microphone in the
Sound Recorder to be able to record from microphone. This is little bit
too difficult for an end used...

[Bug 76934] Re: network-admin doesn't allow the specification of extra modem init strings for ppp (required to make GPRS work)

2007-05-20 Thread Jarno Suni
I think I have the same problem with a PCI dialup modem. I can make
connection work by sudo wvdial, after I edited /etc/wvdial.conf to be
like the attached copy. (I did run sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
first.) I guess the Init2 string in the file makes the difference. I
have tested this by Xubuntu 6.06.1 (Dapper) and 7.04 (Feisty).

[Bug 81694] Abiword prints only once

2007-01-26 Thread Jarno Suni
Public bug reported:

When I open Abiword and a one page document I can print it once, but
after that if I try to print using Abiword, I get this message in
http://localhost:631/printers/ under hp_par_DESKJET_670C (Default
Printer): /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed. If I restart
Abiword, I can print again, once.

I have installed HP Deskjet 670C printer by CUPS' web interface.
(Make and Model: HP DeskJet 670C Foomatic/hpijs (recommended) - HPLIP 0.9.7)

I am using Ubuntu lite on Ubuntu server 6.06.1
Abiword version is 2.4.4

(Printing a pdf file using lpr command on terminal works fine even if
repeated.)
