small, but really obvious bugs like these ruin the reputation of the
rest of ubuntu. the first things people will notice when using ubuntu
should work perfectly, and it should be the top priority to have them
work perfectly.

There is no use case when a user wants to have his icons overlap.

I have some icons with long file names. Sometimes I unintentionally end up

a snapshot of my intentionally horrific example.

This problem is easy to reproduce when working with file previews
(irregularly shaped images) and icons with long file names. Just create some
and drag them close together, paying attention to not trigger the a file move
 event.

I have noticed what I consider to be a related problem. When I remove a file
from my desktop or a new icon is added as a result of some program adding an
entry, the desktop isn't refreshed with autoarranged icons. I have looked
and looked and can find no way to make this my desktop's behavior. I think
this is terrible UI from a usability standpoint. I will attach the image
 showing the problem.

i am not sure what the package is, so sorry.

anyway, i go to the appearance preferences in gnome, go to the fonts tab,
and click on the radio button for subpixel smoothing, and all of the fonts
are bigger than they were before. i do not like big fonts, and antialiasing
 should not make fonts bigger.

so then when i click the details button, i see that the smoothing is only
set to slight when it should be set to full, like it was before
[intrepid]. so, i click full which makes the fonts normal-size, and makes
the fonts pretty and smooth, but then after dismissing the window, the
appearance preferences font tab shows all of the radio boxes selected with a
dash. i have attached a screenshot. this is weird, as there should only be
one DOT in the subpixel smoothing option.

so anyway, here are the set of problems:

#1: selecting subpixel smoothing makes hinting set to slight by default
(it should be set to full by default)
#2: changing the hinting of fonts will change the size of the fonts too
(and the fonts should always appear to be the same size no matter what level
of hinting is used, and no matter if it is subpixel, grayscale, or even
 none)
#3: what the hell is the deal with all of the boxes being selected at the
 same time [with a dash]?

[Bug 297017] [NEW] darklooks widget theme keeps on changing to something else

2008-11-11 Thread Jessie Lawrence
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-themes-extras

i am using ubuntu 8.10, with latest updates, and i have installed the
gnome-themes-extras package. to replicate this bug:

1. install gnome-themes-extras (sudo apt-get install gnome-themes-
extras)

2. go to System Preferences Appearance

3. select any theme, and click the Customize button

4. in the Controls tab, select Darklooks

from this point on, any new application you open will be in a different
theme other than Darklooks. it looks ugly and box-like. see attachment.

i am uninstalling gnome-themes-extras because of this ugly bug. when it
is fixed, tell me and i will install it again to test it.

Re: [Bug 295853] Re: screenshot tool saves files without an extension

2008-11-10 Thread Jessie Lawrence
thats strange. i took a screenshot when running from the live cd (of
ubuntu 8.10). it took a screenshot, and it dod not have the .png at
the end.

to replicate:

1. open up something
2. press alt+print screen to take a screenshot of the current window
3. the Name box will be empty. enter a name (such as test)
4. click save

and it does not add the .png

...

thats weird, i just tried it again, and it turns out that sometimes,
it does automatically fill out the name for you. a few seconds ago,
when i tried it, the Name box was empty by default.

also, something weird happens if you try to save the screenshot
without entering a name. try it.

after i read your first response, i took a screenshot of gmail in

while i was typing you that last reply, i had to refer back to the

i still think that it doesnt look good, and is kinda unnecessary to

can add it themselves, or just edit the existing brasero item.

why wasnt this fixed yet in gnome 2.24?

this is a gnome bug, not specific to ubuntu. also, its not specific to

very last one, whichever it may be. it just so happens to be xylap as
the last one, and so it picks xylap every time. so, it's an extremely
simple problem, it might have even been caused by a typo when writing

[Bug 277883] [NEW] outdated version of ekiga in intrepid

2008-10-03 Thread Jessie Lawrence
Public bug reported:

in the beta, ekiga 2.0.12 is bundled, which has an extremely old and
confusing interface.

ekiga 3 was released along with gnome 2.24, and why wasnt it included
with everything else, seeing as intrepid has the latest version of
gnome?

anyway, i just downloaded the beta, and im going to report all of the
bugs i find. i hope you guys are happy. however, me reporting the bugs
is of no use to you guys unless you fix em.

l8r, off to make more bug reports.

[Bug 40872] Re: Desktop icons are allowed to overlap horribly

2008-09-05 Thread Jessie Lawrence
look, i dont know what those gnome developers are smoking down there,
but i want some. just look at my attached screenshot. nobody WANTS their
icons to overlap like that, okay? thats just disgusting! your computer
should be automatically organized neatly so that you can focus and find
and do things more easily. please, my room is a horror to look at
already. my computer is the thing that lets me get away from the
disorganized hell that is my bedroom. please, for the love of humanity,
save us!

[Bug 212098] Re: easy file sharing not notifying about logout/login

2008-08-31 Thread Jessie Lawrence
ok, that was clarifying.

anyway, i think that a message saying the user must relogin is still
unacceptable. the problem is not that the error message doesnt contain
helpful information. the problem is that ERRORS ARE BAD. we should not
get an error in the first place. it is inconvenient and unnecessary (and
confusing) to have to log out and log back in

it seems that there are a LOT of suggestions as to how this can get
fixed, why not implement them? dynamic updating user permissions,
restarting nautilus and su -c $USERNAME, and newgrp sambashare are
three ways. i will test and see if newgrp sambashare will work and
post the results here very soon.

[Bug 212098] Re: easy file sharing not notifying about logout/login

2008-08-29 Thread Jessie Lawrence
this bug was not present in 7.10 and is therefore a regression. i do not
think that you should have to relogin/restart the computer in order to
start setting up shares, that is way too inconvenient, and you didnt
have to do that in gutsy. instead, how about automatically restarting
samba after installing the sharing services, that way you dont need to
restart?

or you could make it so that samba is never started in the first place
until you are finished installing the services, or something like that?

whatever. it doesnt matter how its fixed, as long as its fixed in the
best way possible. :) i do not want to have to logout and then log back
in to start sharing stuff after installing, many people will find that
inconvenient and will be annoyed, even though it only happens once (it
shouldnt happen at all).

look i dont really care how but i just want the gnome dudes to remake
the way desktop icons are placed on the desktop, and soon (like no later
than gnome 2.26). really obvious bugs like these give linux a bad name.

[Bug 254328] Re: dont have permission to create share

2008-08-04 Thread Jessie Lawrence
wow, i got a response already?! im very impressed!

also, no, i did not restart my session, and i was never told anywhere
that i had to to get it working. therefore, i still think something can
be changed here. i think that after installing samba, it should either
give u that u need 2 restart ur pc 4 the changes 2 take effect system
tray notification, or it should tell you after installing it that you
need to restart your session or start the daemon manually for it to
start working

however, even better than all of those, how about once its done
installing, it just starts the samba service and stuff on its own? this
makes the most sense and seems kinda obvious now.

anyway, i recommend that after u finish installing it, it fires it up
right away so that way people like me dont get confused and start
putting a bunch of frowny faces in launchpad :(

i really hope u consider it, and make the changes and stuff, or just
disregard me and post an excuse in the comments :)

but, i still agree that, if you try to mess with a file that u dont have

says what kind of file operation it is (i.e. move /blah/thingy.foo to

[Bug 254328] [NEW] dont have permission to create share

2008-08-02 Thread Jessie Lawrence
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

i am using ubuntu 8.04.1 with all of the latest updates applied as of
this post.

i used apport so some stuff is attached

steps to repeat:
in nautilus, right click on a folder and select Sharing Options
check the box Share this folder
click Create Share

note: if you didnt install the packages u need 2 share folders and
stuff, u should obviously

anyway when i do that i get this error. i attached a screenshot, mmkay?

anyway, i consider this bug to be pretty significant, because file
sharing over a local network can be extremely important, especially to
schools and other businesses and whatever, and i thought that this is
the targeted audience for LTS releases. not only that, but this bug did
not exist in the last release, 7.10, which means that its a regression.
geez, i thought LTS releases were supposed to be exeptionally stable.
actually, this release brought the most regressions i have ever seen in
ubuntu's history. dont get me wrong, i love ubuntu, and i use it all the
time, which is why i dont like finding so many bugs in it.

i hope this gets fixed :)

[Bug 53575] Re: Random screensaver is always the same one

2008-04-28 Thread Jessie Lawrence
look, this is a really ugly bug, and its been around for years, why the
heck wasnt it fixed by now if people knew about it since 2 years ago,
possibly longer?!!

look, with obvious bugs like this, it discourages people from using
ubuntu, cause they think its flaud when they boot it up and they can
immediately see these.

someone PLEASE FINALLY PUT AN END TO THIS BUG!!! it seems like it could
be so easy to fix, to! this is ridiculous!

[Bug 222808] [NEW] selecting the random theme in the screensaver settings ALWAYS is xlyap

2008-04-26 Thread Jessie Lawrence
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

in every version of ubuntu ive tried and on every computer ive installed
it on, selecting random in screensaver preferences always ends up as
xlyap. i am very surprised that this hasnt been fixed by now. xlyap is
also not that great of a screensaver.

what should happen when you select the random theme is it should pick
any screensaver at random each time the screensaver is initiated.

[Bug 222328] [NEW] same-gnome doesnt exit fullscreen mode after closing and re-launching it

2008-04-25 Thread Jessie Lawrence
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

ubuntu 8.04
version 1:2.22.1.1-0ubuntu3

when i played same gnome, i selected fullscreen mode, i finished the
game, and selected quit from the highscore menu. when i played it again,
it was still in fullscreen mode. when i pressed f11, nothing happened,
aside from a flicker. when i went to the view menu and selected the
toggle fullscreen option, it did the same thing. now, i cant play same-
gnome in windowed mode again. when i open it, it occupies the entire
screen, and i cant turn fullscreen off.

if everyones going to be using this operating system in the future, the
games section will probably be one of the first places they turn. people
should not get disgouraged from ubuntu because of all of these bugs that
are so readily apparent.

in case this information comes in handy, im using an hp m9060n and i
have compiz fusion enabled, set to the preset extra setting
