[Bug 934288] Re: Nautilus Does not Display Menus

2013-04-04 Thread Jim J
I can' consistently make this happen, but I notice it most often when I
have a Nautilus file browsing window open and then insert a USB device
(my Sansa Fuze Clip MP3 player) and then try to open it from the Unity
dock.

If I do this, my original Nautilus window, that was open before, still
functions normally AND has drop down menus. However, the Nautilus file
browsing window that I launched for the USB device still funtions
normally, but DOES NOT have drop down menus.

The only way I can get them to come back is to close all open Nautilus
Windows, open a terminal and type killall nautilus. Then when I open a
new nautilus window, it functions normally AND has drop down menus
again.

This is a VERY annoying bug.

Thanks for looking into it.

Jim

[Bug 670004] Re: GNOME does not load the propatly theme

2011-07-03 Thread Jim J
I'm having this exact same problem.

Logging in with gnome classic or gnome classic no effects starts with an
ambience themed top panel, but that appears to crash and is replaced
with a seeming default gnome theme. However the ambience theme appears
to stay with some, but not all window borders.

Checking the Appearance control panel shows a Custom theme selected.
Selecting Ambience or any other theme does not solve the problem.

The problem looks exactly like the desktop screenshot attached by a
previous poster.

Please fix.

[Bug 784012] [NEW] Xorg freeze with Ubuntu Floating Ubuntu Screensaver when Power Managment set to put display to sleep

2011-05-17 Thread Jim J
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

While using the Classic Ubuntu Desktop with effects, I've experienced
Xorg freezes when returning to my desktop after the screen has gone
blank.

If I move my mouse or hit the keyboard, the Floating Ubuntu screensaver
will come back up but it is frozen, with no animations.

I can move the mouse and, as I've enabled CTRL-ALT-Backspace, I can
restart X.

The problem DOES NOT appear to happen when using the screensaver by
itself. After looking through my power management settings, it looks
like the problem is partially related to the Power Management being set
to put the display to sleep after a set period of time.

I've changed the power management setting to NEVER put the display to
sleep and have thus far not had the same problem any more.

So, to my untrained eye, it looks like there may be some bad reactions
between power management and the screensaver.

Re: [Bug 108951] Re: Gnome drawer applet delays and unresponsiveness

2009-10-20 Thread Jim J
This is actually really sad.

It seems like the nature of the problem is well understood. There is a
ton of confirmation. The exact area that needs to be fixed has been
identified, but the responsible parties just point fingers at each
other.

Oh well.

If they have another Paper Cuts jam, I am definitely submitting this
bug report. It is HUGE now.

Re: [Bug 108951] Re: Gnome drawer applet delays and unresponsiveness

2009-08-06 Thread Jim J
I partially agree.

This drawer delay has been around FOREVER and no movement whatsoever
has been made on it. It seems as if the bug is well documented with
various cases where the behavior does and does not appear (seems to be
tied to compiz as the drawers behave as expected when compiz is turned
off).

As drawers are used by a lot of people and compiz as well, it affects
all those people.

A seemingly small fix would affect a lot of people.

This bug has been open for a long time and gets a lot of comments.
There is interest here.

A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would
encounter on his/her first day of using a new installation of Ubuntu 9.10

This reduces the functionality/purpose of drawers to near 0 for me as I
can't wait for the delay. I think if a poll was done, that probably
upwards of 50% of people would abandon using drawers for the same
reason. Why don't you just remove the drawer feature from ubuntu?

Re: [Bug 231972] Re: Rhythmbox imports iPod-files altough iPod-plugin is off

2008-10-02 Thread Jim J
I think I found the workaround to this.

1. Open Nautilus
- Places - Home

2. Then, Edit - Preferences

3. Choose the Media tab

4. Choose the appropriate action next to the Music Player item in the Media
Handling session. I chose Do Nothing, personally.

No Rythmn box doesn't launch when I connect my iPod.

It will still start importing music if I start it up, even though I have the
iPod plugin disabled, so I am not sure if this is a complete fix, but the
above workaround at least stops it from automatically launching and
importing the files whenever I connect my iPod.

Ever since upgrading to Hardy Heron (8.04), some Rhythmbox (which I also used
in Gutsy 7.10) downloaded podcast media files wouldn't transfer to gtkpod. I
noticed that instead of ending in .mp3, they now ended in something like
.mp3?nvb=20080529153807nva=20080530153807t=05dbec74736273c29b971

The addition of the question mark and other tags at the end appears to
cause problems with some multimedia applications. I have to manually
- search every downloaded podcast folder to files with broken extensions
- and rename them before they will transfer correctly, using gtkpod, to my
- ipod.
+ search every downloaded podcast folder for files with broken
+ extensions and rename them before they will transfer correctly, using
+ gtkpod, to my ipod.

This doesn't consistently happen to ALL of my podcast feeds and I have
looked at the feeds that do exhibit this behavior and the enclosures
don't list this extra information at the end the the podcast mp3 or ogg
  file.

Some podcast feeds that exhibit this behavior include. This is not an
exhaustive list as I deleted a few that exhibited this behavior that I no
longer follow anyway:
  * Pauldotcom Security Weekly, http://pauldotcom.com/podcast/psw.xml, it
appears that they host their media files on libsyn.com

  * Redmonk Radio, http://feeds.feedburner.com/RedmonkRadio, it appears
that they host their media files on libsyn.com

  * Software Engineering Radio, http://se-radio.net/rss (this actually
redirects to a feedburner feed), it appears that they host their media
  files on libsyn.com

  * The Java Posse, http://feeds.feedburner.com/javaposse, it appears that
they also host their media files on libsyn.com

Of the current feeds that had new episodes to download, it looks like
all of the ones that are having this problem host their media files on
libsyn.com. I don't know if that makes any difference, but I found it
odd that it seemed to be a common factor.

I thought that the issue might a feedburner.com feed issue (and it still
might be), but the Pauldotcom Security podcast doesn't appear (as far as
I could tell) to use a feedburner feed and yet still has the problem
with the extra garbage at the end of its media file extensions.

[Bug 235851] [NEW] Some rhythmbox podcast downloads have added garbage in the filename after the mp3/ogg extension making it difficult to transfer to gtkpod until they are renamed manually

2008-05-29 Thread Jim J
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Description:Ubuntu 8.04
Release:8.04

rhythmbox:
  Installed: 0.11.5-0ubuntu6
  Candidate: 0.11.5-0ubuntu6
  Version table:
 *** 0.11.5-0ubuntu6 0
500 http://ftp.ussg.iu.edu hardy/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Ever since upgrading to Hardy Heron (8.04), some Rhythmbox (which I also used
in Gutsy 7.10) downloaded podcast media files wouldn't transfer to gtkpod. I
noticed that instead of ending in .mp3, they now ended in something like
.mp3?nvb=20080529153807nva=20080530153807t=05dbec74736273c29b971

The addition of the question mark and other tags at the end appears to
cause problems with some multimedia applications. I have to manually
search every downloaded podcast folder for files with broken
extensions and rename them before they will transfer correctly, using
gtkpod, to my ipod.

* Pauldotcom Security Weekly, http://pauldotcom.com/podcast/psw.xml, it appears
that they host their media files on libsyn.com

[Bug 231972] Re: Rhythmbox imports iPod-files altough iPod-plugin is off

2008-05-23 Thread Jim J
I can confirm this bug. I have Rhythmbox's Portable Media Player plugin
disabled. However, whenever I have Rhythmbox running and then attach my
iPod to the computer, Rhythmbox shows that it is attached and shows a
progress bar at the bottom showing that it is importing all the songs
from the iPod.

Also, if I plug in my iPod, Rhythmbox will start up automatically, even
though it is not set in the Preferred Applications control panel (System
- Preferences - Preferred Applications) and then it will show the iPod
attached and start trying to import all the files.

This is very annoying as it didn't used to work this way.

I prefer to use gtkpod to manage my iPod, but I like Rhythmbox as a
media player and podcast client.

I think this type of behavior is going to really turn people off of the
Rhythmbox application if it doesn't get resolved as it doesn't appear to
respect their wishes in regard to it.

I also stopped Rhythmbox before it imported all the songs. I hope that
is okay.

[Bug 108951] Re: Gnome drawer applet delays and unresponsiveness

2008-05-23 Thread Jim J
I can confirm that the delay aspect of this drawer bug still is
affecting Hardy Heron. I have Normal Visual Effects checked (compiz-
fusion) under the Appearance Preferences. when I click on a drawer
applet that I have added to the gnome-panel, there is a slight pause
before the drawer extends and then a slight pause before all the icons
are painted into the open drawer.

This behavior DOES NOT happen with the gnome-menus (Applications,
Places, System). They appear near instantaneously.

It is a very annoying bug as I make heavy use of drawers in order to
clean up my screen real estate.

[Bug 233794] [NEW] [Hardy] gnome preferred applications for multimedia doesn't fully accept custom setting

2008-05-21 Thread Jim J
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

I like to have gtkpod launch whenever I attach my ipod to my Ubuntu
system. In previous version of Ubuntu, I would just set gtkpod as the
preferred application to launch in the Preferred Applications System
Preferences.

After upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy (8.04), I noticed that whenever I
plugged my iPod in, Rythmbox would launch. Not what I wanted to happen
and what was previously configured (having gtkpod launch).

After confirming that I gtkpod was upgraded as part of my dist upgrade,
I checked out the Preferred Applications settings (System - Preferences
- Preferred Applications - Multimedia tab) and saw that Rythmbox was
indeed the configured application for the Multimedia Player.

So I clicked the drop down menu which only lists Totem as the other
alternative and Custom.

So I chose custom, typed in gtkpod, then closed the window.

Then I re-connected my iPod and Rhythmbox started again, followed by
gtkpod which gave an error because the iPod was already loaded somewhere
else.

I was only able to use gtkpod after closing both applications and then
relaunching gtkpod.

So I tried setting the Preferred Multimedia application to None (Custom
with a blank field) and Rhythmbox still lauches.

I even disabled the iPod plugin in Rhythmbox and it still launches and
attaches to the iPod when I connect the device.

This is SERIOUSLY broken behavior from an end user standpoint.

-
1) lsb_release -rd:
Description:Ubuntu 8.04
Release:8.04

2) Not sure which package the Preferred Applications option is under, I
presume gnome.

3) I would have expected that the application that I set to launch would
have launched by itself and given me access to my device. Also, if I
set the configuration for no action, I would have expected nothing to
happen other than my device's filesystem being automounted.

4) See above

[Bug 194065] Re: Allow me to change the appearance of the cursor

2008-02-22 Thread Jim J
I don't believe that there is currently an option to change the cursor
to a vertical line. You can turn off the blinking of the block cursor
within the profile preferences, however.

Not sure if that helps or not.

[Bug 190240] [NEW] Rhythmbox podcast reciever fails to download enapsulated data that includes a redirect

2008-02-08 Thread Jim J
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

This appears like it is related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/64096 as the
problem seems to be that Rhythmbox's podcast feed parser isn't correctly
handling redirects that use a question mark (?) in them.

The most recent example that I see is in trying to download the Linux
News Log podcast using their MP3 feed
(http://linux.quicksurf.com/?feed=rss2cat=78).

You'll notice that the download links for the individual files look like this:
http://media.techpodcasts.com/linuxnewslog/www.podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3?http://audio.quicksurf.com/audiocasts/Linux-News-Log-147-2008-01-29.mp3

The redirect.mp3?http:// in that line appears to be the hangup.

Web browsers will download the files fine (though Firefox names the resulting
feed redirect.mp3 instead of the actual filename of
Linux-News-Log-147-2008-01-29.mp3. That's also a bug that I will be filing.
