[Bug 2066074] Re: Backspace key above numberpad spams infinite backspace on a single press

2024-05-19 Thread Joe
Okay it looks like Lenovo uses some kind of special layer for the number
pad when working with windows.

https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/494698/thinkpad-second-sticky-
backspace-key

Although that still doesn't fully explain why it works properly before
the kernel loads. I don't really know when the kernel loads or even what
it takes over from, I'm just guessing that something else is in control
for those CLI parts where there's no bug.

[Bug 2066074] Re: Backspace key above numberpad spams infinite backspace on a single press

2024-05-18 Thread Joe
Given the following Terminal Command
```
sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration
```
--
The Default keyboard setting was
```
Generic 105-key PC
```
--
and the new settings were
```
Do not configure keyboard; keep kernel keymap
English (US)
English (US) - English (Dvorak)
No AltGr key
No compose key
"No" to ctrl + alt + backspace shortcut
```

Following a system reboot after letting the computer finish making the
changes, the bug remains. Also, there was not a specific keyboard layout
for the this laptop in the presets (Lenovo Thinkpad E570)

By activating the proposed repository I did not get any updates for
gimp. So i installed it via

sudo apt install gimp/noble-proposed

And I can confirm, that the patch works. No more crashes while closing
Gimp. Before I had them all the time.

[Bug 1965648] [NEW] Autorotate initiates, but doesn't reset

2022-03-19 Thread Joe Barnett
Public bug reported:

In jammy I can get mutter's auto-rotate to switch to portrait mode
("right-up") by rotating the device (this only worked in impish if I
installed the autorotate gnome-shell extension).

However, putting it back into "normal" orientation doesn't put the
screen back in landscape mode. Flipping it around ("left-up") does swap
to the reverse portrait mode, but still can't get back to "normal"
afterward.

running `monitor-sensor` does show the accelerometer orientation change
events (including the "normal" ones) triggering properly, just the
desktop doesn't respond.

Plugging in an external monitor does seem to trigger the desktop to go
back to normal landscape mode.

[Bug 1950925] Re: alt-tab doesnt work anymore after upgrade to 21.10

2021-11-22 Thread Joe
Hi all,

This also affects me, starting with the update to 21.04 and continuing
with the 21.10 update. alt does nothing, super switches between
applications. I haven't installed any Gnome extensions.

~$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-applications
['Tab']

~$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-windows
['Tab']

Thank you for the work!!

[Bug 1932328] Re: Thunderbird under Wayland does not correctly close (or manage) windows

2021-11-18 Thread Joe-xenotropic
For anyone needing a fix for nonfunctional alt-tab switching, at least
for Ubuntu/Gnome you can remap in keyboard shortcuts to have the "direct
windows switching", which by default is alt-esc, to be instead alt-tab.
It is slightly different behavior -- more visual noise -- but fulfills
the same essential function.

[Bug 1686895] Re: Gnome Night Light stays warmer after overnight suspend

2020-11-17 Thread Joe Stevenson-Pew
Hi All,

I am experiencing this too.

After my monitors have lost the display port signal from my machine
(either during suspension or blank screen), changing the nightlight
settings is no longer possible and the last used setting is permanently
engaged. Rebooting fixes the issue, however.

I am on Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS and am using three monitors in series via
MST.

Many thanks for any guidance.

[Bug 1898080] [NEW] Dsiplay artifacts in groovy when moving windows around

2020-10-01 Thread Joe Barnett
Public bug reported:

In a wayland session with fractional scaling (175% on laptop screen),
seeing weird visual artifacts around windows when moving them around,
see attached video for an example. Also see similar artifacts near
terminal prompt, gtk file chooser when mousing over items, and maybe
other locations too?

artifacts do not appear on external monitor set to 100% scaling, or on
laptop screen if scaling is set to 100%, 150%, or 200%.

[Bug 1876286]

2020-07-30 Thread Joe Buc
Rod,

I am pleased to report that the bug fix has finally found its way to
Debian and I have updated Evolution on my laptop running, Debian 9.
My wife's laptop had been running Debian 8 and the fix did not progress
to Debian 8, so I "updated" my wife's laptop to Debian 9 and now, she
also is enjoying problem free downloads of email from "verizon.net"
addresses using Evolution.

Thanks for all of your (successful) efforts.

Cheers,

Joe

[Bug 1876286] got it working in Evolution on Ubuntu OS, when on Debian?

2020-07-02 Thread Joe Buc
Dear Rod,

I was unable to get Evolution working o.k. on Ubuntu, until the update,
itself was available. Still not quite sure how I finally got Evolution
working okay on Ubuntu, but it not works just fine! Unfortunately, I
am still not able to use Evolution on Debian. Any guess when the
update will be available for fixing Evolution on Debian.

Again, thanks for your work fixing the bug, and thanks for your help to
me.

[Bug 1876286] Re: Evolution reports "Error performing TLS handshake: Internal error in memory allocation."

2020-07-01 Thread Joe Buc
Rod,

Congrats on the fix of bug 1876286. I am running Evolution on Debian
and on Ubuntu and have not yet seen any software updates posted on
these systems. Can you give me any directions as to how I can update
the relevant libraries and/or functions? If necessary, I "might" be
able to compile from source, but I have have a much better chance of
success, if you can direct me to software that has already been
compiled, that I can download and copy into the OS. E.g. dpkg -i
..deb,
or perhaps use synaptic or similar to install.

Any suggestions.

Again, thanks for your good work.

2020-05-25 Thread Joe Buc
Rod,

Congratulations! It looks like you will soon be successful in
"squashing" that bug.

I look forward to updating my library for GnuTLS from 3.5 to 3.6,
i.e. updating libgnutls3.0 from version 3.5 to 3.6.

Again, thank you for your persistence and your effort in fixing the
problem.

2020-05-14 Thread Joe Prostko
Sorry I somehow missed your message for a month ago, Sebastien. It
seems I missed a notification about it somehow.

That said, all seems to be working now. I haven't tried it in some
time, but the banner text is now displaying as it should.

We should be able to close out this issue.

Thank you.

[Bug 1876286] [NEW] Evolution reports "Error performing TLS handshake: Internal error in memory allocation."

2020-05-06 Thread Joe Buc
Rod,

I saw your suggestions re: obtaining additional info via terminal and
"export GNUTLS_DEBUG_LEVEL=99
evolution".

I wasn't sure whether you were suggesting that I use that technique to
obtain more info and then forward the info to you. On the chance that
you wanted me to forward the info to you, I did execute the commands
and I made a copy of the results. The copy consists of a 20-page PDF
file. Please let me know if you wish me to forward to you a copy of the
results.

I have very limited familiarity with TLS, etc., so I have no idea
whether the "results" would contain info regarding my password for the
email requested from the server, so I have deferred sending the results
to you.

I await your response.

[Bug 1868155] [NEW] Banner text and user list functionality seem broken

2020-03-19 Thread Joe Prostko
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I am testing out what will become Ubuntu 20.04, and features that are
useful or simply mandatory in an enterprise environment currently do not
work.

These features are the ability to utilize a login banner, as well as
disable the user list on the login screen.

For instance, even after enabling org.gnome.login-screen -> banner-
message-enable and setting banner text via org.gnome.login-screen ->
banner-message-text, there is no banner text present on the login
screen. If you blink, you can maybe see it for a split second upon
submitting the user's password, but this is not at all useful for
scenarios where a user must comply with certain terms before logging
into a workstation.

Also, it seems that org.gnome.login-screen -> disable-user-list
currently has no effect, as it will always show my user when starting
the machine, instead of having an empty username field that must be
populated.

Either these are bugs, or there is some new way to achieve this
functionality. If there is a new way to achieve this functionality,
please let me know and then close this issue. Otherwise, I think that
this all needs addressed. This used to work before the recent
login/lock screen changes that were brought in when GNOME 3.36 was
brought into the build. (Although my output below says that GNOME shell
is 3.35.91, actually.)

Some more details:

I am currently using the 2020-03-08 daily-live ISO from
cdimage.ubuntu.com .

[Bug 1851146] [NEW] No Virtual Terminals

2019-11-03 Thread Joe Brown
Public bug reported:

I'll start this bug report with my first disclaimer: I'm filing this
report from a fixed system. The original system that I'm going to
reference has been installed over with the current system I'm filing
this report from. The first install was UEFI, minimal install, not
connected to the internet during installation. Now, I'll continue with
my story.

So, when doing the first install, I realized I had screwed up my
username when doing the install. But you can't do a lot of the
'usermod' commands from the user you're logged in as. Since I was
having to log in as a regular user, and then run 'sudo usermod', it was
stating that the user I was trying to modify was currently logged in.
So I logged out, and then attempted to switch to a tty, as I didn't need
a graphical login for root.

When trying to access virtual TTYs from Ctrl+Alt+F{3,4,5,6}, there were
no terminals to access. I did some googling and didn't find anything
directly related. Most were related to either accessing virtual
terminals, or getting back to a graphical desktop if you mistakenly get
to a vtty. So I took to IRC (#ubuntu on freenode). After someone did a
'!tty' to really rub salt in the wound, someone recommended that I try
uncommenting 'GRUB_TERMINAL=console' and regenerating grub.cfg, I took
them up on the offer.

So I open /etc/default/grub, and scroll down to that line. I
immediately see it says 'grub-pc only'. I knew my install was UEFI, but
since it was a fresh install I ignored the warning and did it anyway.
Uncommented GRUB_TERMINAL=console did a 'sudo update-grub'. I went down
for a reboot...and my system did not boot again. I considered chrooting
and fixing it, but I thought it may be less annoying to just re-install.
However, this time I elected to do a full install while connected to
wifi. After booting up the first time, I try switch over to a TTY and
*POOF!*, I have ttys now.

So I'm not sure if my install the first time was simply busted, or the
difference of doing a minimal install vs a full install is what caused
my vtty issue. But anyway. Thought I'd open a bug.

[Bug 1848086] [NEW] Keyboard shortcuts to launch apps sometimes launch twice

2019-10-14 Thread Joe Barnett
Public bug reported:

Noticed that recently (past few days? since 3.34.1?) the key
combinations that I have set to launch web browser or launch terminal
end up launching two browsers or terminals instead of just one. Only
happens ~50% of the time, but still pretty frequently.

[Bug 1845031] [NEW] gnome not remembering numlock state in eoan

2019-09-23 Thread Joe Barnett
Public bug reported:

in 3.34, gnome-settings-daemon has removed its handling of numlock state
persistence, claiming that mutter should be handling that now
(https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-settings-

Public bug reported:

Running under wayland, with fractional scaling enabled and set to 175%
on laptop screen, 100% on external screen, sometimes windows like

the window or moving the window back and forth between screens a few
times.

2019-04-17 Thread Joe Barnett
Not sure if related, but I do run under wayland (weird that it looks
like an X11 error then, especially as evolution runs wayland native?),
with fractional zooming on my laptop panel @ 175% and usually have an
external, lower resolution screen at 100% scaling. Evolution is usually
the first app i open and stays open throughout my session, so has
usually been running for days before being closed (and killing the
session) -- but sometimes closing it is fine. Haven't seen any other
app trigger it.

[Bug 1822394] Re: [Dell XPS 15 9575] laptop keyboard & touchpad not working at gdm screen after boot

2019-04-04 Thread Joe Barnett
Perhaps this is somehow related to the convertible lid hinge.
Ordinarily when the laptop is in "tablet" mode (hinge open > 180
degrees), the keyboard and touchpad are disabled. Even more reliably
than using an external device, switching into and then back out of
tablet mode by opening/closing the hinge seems to restore
keyboard/touchpad functionality. Not sure why they appear to work until
the gdm screen though, or why sometimes using an external device causes
them to work again.

On a dell XPS 15 2-in-1 with the latest 1.4.0 bios, my touchpad and keyboard
are unresponsive at the gdm login screen. Keyboard works to unlock encrypted
harddrive before that though. If I plug in a USB keyboard or activate my
bluetooth mouse, I can use those to log in, and then after logging in the
laptop touchpad and keyboard work again. Logging out of the desktop results
in the laptop touchpad and keyboard working on the gdm screen. Did not see
this behavior before upgrading from 1.2.0 bios to 1.4.0 bios, but also had
not rebooted in a while, so not sure if bios or package upgrades triggered
this behavior.

[Bug 1821262] [NEW] gnome-shell crashes when closing evolution

2019-03-21 Thread Joe Barnett
Public bug reported:

Had this happen a few times now, where closing the main evolution window
results in a gnome-shell crash:

Mar 21 16:55:18 taplop gnome-shell[2552]: The program 'gnome-shell' received an
X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the
program.
  The error was 'BadWindow (invalid
Window parameter)'.
(Details: serial 221715 error_code
3 request_code 18 (core protocol) minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X
errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the
error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with
the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
 variable to change this behavior.
You can then get a meaningful
 backtrace from your debugger if
you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 1820355] [NEW] Firefox icon missing

2019-03-15 Thread Joe Barnett
Public bug reported:

I have firefox bookmarked in the gnome-shell dash. When starting the
shell in disco, the firefox logo is missing and the launcher is a small
but clickable blank area. If I use gnome-tweaks to change icon theme,
the logo reappears for the rest of the session.

It doesn't seem to be a problem anymore in Ubuntu 18.04 or later.

[Bug 1795483] Re: Experimental setting to enable fractional Hi-DPI scaling offers no option larger than 200% on 15.6 inch, 3840 x 2160 pixel display (Dell XPS 15 9575)

2018-12-16 Thread Joe Murphy
I think it may be something to do with the font antialiasing. When I go
to 100% scaling with no AA, it looks similarly garbled to 125% with
subpixel AA enabled. I'm not sure if that's 100% of the issue, but it
might be a worthwhile lead to chase.

[Bug 1797174] Re: [Dell XPS 15 9575] gnome-shell unrotates immediately after rotating

2018-11-26 Thread Joe Barnett
I'll try to test on an X session in a bit. One thing I have noticed is
that while I still get the log messages, the unrotate behavior seems
much better when setting the `dc=0` amdgpu module parameter (was also
behaving better with the module blacklisted, but not sure about log
messages), as per comments in

[Bug 1773114] Re: Cannot copy file using 'cp' on a gvfs mount

Don't know if it the same as
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=795805, or whether I'm even
experiencing the same bug, but in my case small files copy fine and
large files fail with the invalid argument error all in Nautilus. The
bug mentioned states that files copy in Nautilus. It is unclear what
size of file was used by the reporter in that bug report.

And with more testing, it seems like the activities button target is
smaller and/or lower under Wayland than it is in Xorg. I can get it to
work if i aim for the bottom of the black top bar, vs the middle of it
(while aiming for the middle results in the flash, but not activation of
the Activites text).

[Bug 1800634] [NEW] Mouse Movement Inverted

2018-10-30 Thread Joe
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure this is gnome shell, as the behavior was also seen in GDM.
Except in GDM, the entire screen was upside down in addition to the
mouse being inverted.

Upon login to gnome shell, the mouse pointer was upside down, and my
movements on the mouse were inverted. Meaning when I moved my mouse up,
the pointer went down (using an actual mouse, not a touchpad). I
believe left and right worked properly (I can't remember clearly) But
when I got the mouse over to the top-right of the screen to turn on wifi
(NetworkManager was mysteriously not running -- solved by 'systemctl
start NetworkManager' in a terminal), it actually opened up the gnome
shell activities menu. Meaning that gnome-shell, at least from my
interpretation, interpreted the click as being in the top-left of the
screen instead of the top-right. I was able to finally open firefox (I
had given up on mouse movement at this point and was using keyboard
shortcuts) and googled the problem. I found this page:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1061403/ubuntu-18-04-1-upside-down-
mouse-cursor-and-inverted-position

I did an 'apt update' and 'apt full-upgrade', and then executed 'apt-get
remove iio-sensor-proxy'. The reboot afterward took longer than usual
it seemed, but it finally went down. Seeing that removing the iio-
sensor-proxy worked, I was trying to figure out what sort of sensor
would be triggering this behavior. And then I saw that I had my PS4
controller plugged in, which has the sixaxis sensor in it.

Removing that package fixed the problem. My mouse/screen is no longer
inverted, and my PS4 controller (which I'm assuming has the sensor) is
still plugged in.

3) I expected screen and mouse behavior to be normal.

4) Screen was upside down on GDM, but correct in gnome-shell. I'm not
sure if the mouse movement was correct or upside down in GDM, typically
I never touch my mouse during the login process.

[Bug 1797178] Re: gnome-shell activities / application icon touches not fully registering

2018-10-19 Thread Joe Barnett
maybe, although I'm using the vanilla gnome session, so the ubuntu-dock
extension shouldn't be involved.

[Bug 1797178] Re: gnome-shell activities / application icon touches not fully registering

2018-10-11 Thread Joe Barnett
Disabling extensions in the same session still shows the same behavior.
Logging out and back in again with them still disabled shows the same
behavior on the "Activities" button, but app launchers respond to touch
events appropriately. Re-enabling them in the same session keeps the
same state ("Activities" button bad, app launchers good)

[Bug 1797178] [NEW] gnome-shell activities / application icon touches not fully registering

2018-10-10 Thread Joe Barnett
Public bug reported:

On a dell xps 15 2-in-1 (model 9575), the touchscreen mostly works.
However, in gnome-shell, touching the top-left 'Activities' menu results
in a quick flash of the menu button, but not the launching of the
overview. Once in the overview (via mouse/keyboard/swipe-from-left),
touching on an application icon (in either the left tray or the
applications grid) results in the application icon flashing, but not
activating. A long-touch will bring up a menu in which touching on "new
window" works properly. Additionally, touching the "show applications"
grid button works, as do other components of the top bar, its only the
the "activities" menu button and app icon launchers that are
"registering" a touch but not activating properly.

[Bug 1797174] [NEW] gnome-shell unrotates immediately after rotating

2018-10-10 Thread Joe Barnett
Public bug reported:

on a dell xps 15 2-in-1 (model 9575), I've enabled iio-sensor-proxy
functionality by doing:

modprobe intel-ish-ipc
echo "8086 a135" > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/intel_ish_ipc/new_id

This makes `monitor-sensor` display rotation events, and gnome-shell
auto-rotate the screen upon receiving them. However, immediately after
rotating, the screen rotates back to its normal orientation (unless I quickly
lock rotation), displaying the following in journalctl:

Oct 10 09:06:19 taplop gnome-shell[2616]: Failed to apply DRM plane transform

[Bug 1795991] Re: Difficulty setting up multimonitor with fractional scaling

2018-10-03 Thread Joe Barnett
** Description changed:

I've enabled fractional scaling and set my laptop's 3840x2160 screen to
175% scaling. Upon plugging in an external 1920x1080 monitor, my
laptop's screen resets to 200% scaling, and the external screen is set
to 100%, to the right of my laptop's screen.

If I try to set the laptop screen back to 175%, the Displays panel does
not allow me to Apply, and journalctl outputs: Config not applicable:
  GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.InvalidArgs: Logical monitors not
  adjecent

Putting the external screen on the left or top of the laptop screen
allows Apply to work (bottom or right does not work), but immediately
reverts to the auto-set settings (200% laptop with 100% external on the
right) and then clicking "revert" on the "revert or keep" dialog sets
things to the requested scale factor and position (175% laptop with 100%
  external on the top/left).

+ I've also seen the settings randomly reset to 200% laptop with 100%
+ external on the right upon doing things like clicking reply in evolution
+ to open up a new compose window.
+
That's a bit long winded, so here's a shorter rundown of bugs description:
  1) Upon connecting an external screen, the laptop screen scaling changes
  2) Can't set external screen to the bottom or right of laptop screen with
fractional scaling
  3) Upon Application, the requested settings are reverted, and then reverting
the reversion applies them, while "keeping" the change reverts
+ 4) Certain random actions appear to reset to the undesired settings

2017-10-04 Thread Joe Barnett
I'm happy to help. I've applied the patch from the gnome bug to a local
package build. Haven't seen the crash since but only been a day or so
(was crashing on the order of once a week prior)

[Bug 1714542] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGSEGV in st_theme_node_reduce_border_radius() from st_theme_node_paint_borders() from st_theme_node_paint()

2017-09-14 Thread Joe Barnett
This appears to happen much more with the experimental mutter fractional
scaling support turned on and scaling set to 150% (and font scaling set
to 100%), but also happens without that enabled. Without it enabled, I
have scaling set to 100%, but font scaling set to 150%.

[Bug 1654869] [NEW] No menubar for gedit when ran as sudo

2017-01-08 Thread Joe Lathem
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu package version: 3.22.0-1ubuntu1
Desktop environment: Unity

No menubar appears either within the program window or on the global
menu when ran with super-user permissions via gksu/sudo. Bug is not
present when ran as a normal user. Bug is also not present when logging
in to the desktop session as 'root' (NOT recommended).

Similar to the bug reported in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gedit/+bug/1518516 ,but ONLY
affects gedit when used with sudo/gksu.

[[Related rant: Does anyone even like this new, ugly, bug-riddled gedit
interface? Like everyone else that I've seen discuss the topic, I miss
the "classic" gedit interface. It looked better and was stable and
resilient. This new interface looks awkward and is causing issues in
many DEs, including its native GNOME.]]

[Bug 685215] Re: users-admin hangs immediately when run as root

2016-09-29 Thread Joe Philipps
The initial report of this was nearly six years ago. If this program is
so "dead," I have to wonder why here in late Sep. 2016 on an up-to-date
Raspbian system this is still the default app run when Xfce users run
the "Users and Groups" item on the System main menu. I guess it's
either not as dead as you thought, or many distribution maintainers
including the Raspbian folks should be using something else (and what, I
do not know).
