It doesn't seem to be a problem anymore in Ubuntu 18.04 or later. When mounted, I am prompted for the password. If the password is entered correctly, then nautilus will open a window displaying the SD card contents. If I make a mistake typing the password then the SD is not decrypted and no window opens. This is normal.
