[Bug 1702071] Re: Search spins forever, returns no results.

2022-01-18 Thread John Leach
this is happened for me on 21.10 and I just upgraded to the development
release of 22.04 and it was still happening.

version 41.2-1

the spinner would just sit there spinning on a search.

strace of gnome-software showed it doing nothing really.

I sent a TERM signal to the gnome-software process and restarted it, and
search is working fine now

nothing seems very relevant in the systemd journal:

[Bug 1730728] Re: gnome-shell crashes randomly, error in libgobject-2.0.so.0.5400.1

2017-11-13 Thread John Leach
I have this same crashing problem, several times a day. Started about a
week ago.

I also have the same problem trying to report it. I have /var/crash
/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash which is 65M. When I try report it
using either appport-bug or apport-cli, those commands just exit
silently (apport-bug prompts me if I want to report a bug report first
and then does so). They create a 0 byte _usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.upload
file.

So I'm having trouble reporting it too.

For the record I've tried disabling all extensions, but that hasn't
helped.

[Bug 1299433] [NEW] gnome-control-center crashes testing sound effects with alert volume set to off

2014-03-29 Thread John Leach
Public bug reported:

[Bug 977866] Re: no sound while playing music from a gvfs mounted samba share

2012-07-12 Thread John Leach
I've done some more digging. Using the gstreamer debugging options, I've
at least identified a difference between totem and rhythmbox here.

I can see totem somehow translates the smb:// url to the fuse mount path
and just uses the filesrc gstreamer source element to read the file (and
can successfully play it):

0:00:00.722405619 2515 0x7ffd6bfd3730 INFO filesrc
gstfilesrc.c:374:gst_file_src_set_location: filename : /home/john/.gvfs/music
on lion/Music/Therapy/Therapy - Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3
0:00:00.722418749 2515 0x7ffd6bfd3730 INFO filesrc
gstfilesrc.c:375:gst_file_src_set_location: uri :
file:///home/john/.gvfs/music%20on%20lion/Music/Therapy/Therapy%20-%20Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3

rhythmbox doesn't use the fuse mount - instead using the gio_src gstreamer
source element. It appears to be continue reading it fine, though as explained
above the output goes silent after about 1 or 2 seconds.

0:00:01.292036091 2468 0xf8c8d0 DEBUGgio_src
gstgiosrc.c:335:gst_gio_src_get_stream:source opened location
smb://lion/music/Music/Therapy/Therapy%20-%20Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3

But I can have gstreamer play the file successfully using giosrc using
gst-launch:

gst-launch-0.10 giosrc location=smb://lion/music/Music/Therapy/Therapy
- Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3 ! flump3dec ! autoaudiosink

I've attached debug logs of my gst-launch and the rhythmbox commands
attempting to play the same file - using the options
GST_DEBUG_NO_COLOR=1
GST_DEBUG=gio_src:5,gio_base_src:5,basesrc:5,gnomevfs:5,filesrc:5

There are some differences between the two, but I'm not sure what is
relevant. In particularly, one appears to be in push mode and one pull.
They both read the file in 4k chunks, but rhythmbox does it from a weird
initial offset for some reason (perhaps due to it reading metadata info
though). Nothing obviously conclusive to me though.

[Bug 1024117] [NEW] fails to play mp3s from a samba share using gio

2012-07-12 Thread John Leach
Public bug reported:

I'm running the following command to play an mp3 file over a samba
share:

gst-launch-0.10 -v playbin2 uri=smb://lion/music/Music/Therapy/Therapy
- Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3

it starts to play, but after about 1 second the audio goes silent, but
the command doesn't finish. Playing the same file in rhythmbox does the
same thing and the progress indicator keeps moving, suggesting playing
but is just silent.

If play the same file from the same server but via ssh or sftp, it plays
fine:

gst-launch-0.10 -v playbin2
uri=ssh://lion/media/music/Music/Therapy/Therapy -
Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3

If I manually build a chain of sinks using giosrc directly, rather than
using playbin2, it plays ok:

gst-launch-0.10 giosrc location=smb://lion/music/Music/Therapy/Therapy
- Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3 ! flump3dec ! autoaudiosink

If I play a flac file from the same server (using playbin2 again), it
also plays fine (yes, you heard right, hehe!):

gst-launch-0.10 playbin2 uri=smb://lion/music/Music/Admiral
Fallow/Boots Met My Face/Admiral Fallow - Boots Met My Face - 01 Dead
Against Smoking.flac

I've attached logs with GST_DEBUG=*:5 for all the above commands. They
all succeed except mp3 over smb.

I'm using gstreamer0.10-plugins-base 0.10.36-1 on Precise.

This started out as bug #977866 reported against rhythmbox, but I've
found that it's a gstreamer (or gvfs?) problem, so am resubmitting here
with a clearer report.

[Bug 977866] Re: no sound while playing music from a gvfs mounted samba share

2012-05-02 Thread John Leach
Further investigation reveals that Rhythmbox can play flacs via a samba
share but not mp3s (sounds crazy, but I've triple checked!)

Totem can play both only if the ~/.gvfs fuse filesystem is mounted.
Today, the gvfs-fuse-daemon process had crashed (or otherwise stopped
for some reason) and totem was having the same problem as rhythmbox
(playing the first second or two of mp3s). When I remounted .gvfs totem
was able to play mp3s (though rhythmbox still could not).

So this is not fixed, but there are some more hints about the problem
there and this bug is beyond just rhythmbox.

when playing the same track from an samba share, it plays for maybe 1

still playing).

[Bug 283130] Re: rhythmbox no longer plays music from a samba share

2008-10-14 Thread John Leach
I ran rhythmbox and collected the debug output - it was rather big so I
cut it down to the relevant stuff.

I truncated my .xsession-errors file before running rhythmbox and it is
still empty after running it - I think I truncated it wrong and need to
login and out now, but looking back in the old one it only really seemed
to contain the same connection_message_func(): Callback errors anyway.

[Bug 283130] [NEW] rhythmbox no longer plays music from a samba share

2008-10-14 Thread John Leach
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

after upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid, rhythmbox refuses to play music
files from a samba share, displaying a small red error icon against each
track as it tries to play them

This is with rhythmbox 0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu2

rhythmbox shows a number of these messages on the console as I try to
play music from a samba share:

connection_message_func(): Callback
CALLBACK: fill-authentication!!!
connection_message_func(): Callback
CALLBACK: fill-authentication!!!

The music was imported from the samba share on Hardy and used to play
normally. I've also tried reimporting on Intrepid but it still fails to
play.

The samba share is a gvfs mount. Nautilus can see the files and they can
be played with Totem.

I've just made several similar tests in Ubuntu Hardy and this bug
appears to be fixed now.

Sebastien, why has the status been changed to incomplete? I might be
misunderstanding the status, but it's a bit frustrating to have a

[Bug 198385] [NEW] Emptying trash shows a Preparing dialog with a non-moving progress bar

2008-03-04 Thread John Leach
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When emptying the trash (I used the Empty Deleted Items button at the
top of the file list in Nautilus) a new gvfs style dialog pops up with a
progress bar at 0% saying Preparing. It stays at 0% for the duration
of the empty and then disappears when it's done.

I imagine it should say Emptying Deleted Items and the progress bar
should either update, or not be displayed at all.

Searching for a name with the mail address evolution extension enabled.

This crash does not happen with that extension disabled - the other extensions
seem fine, turning up results without crashing.

[Bug 140485] gnome-settings-daemon not starting with 1:2.19.92-0ubuntu3

2007-09-17 Thread John Leach
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

after upgrading to 1:2.19.92-0ubuntu3 I got the gnome settings daemon
could not be started dialog on login and all my theme and fonts were
broken.

I downgraded the gnome-control-center and libgnome-window-settings1
packages back to 1:2.19.92-0ubuntu2 and it fixed it.

The gnome-settings-daemon command gave the following output when run
manually:

The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device'.
  (Details: serial 666 error_code 171 request_code 147 minor_code 3)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 41335] Re: DVD playing is not working correctly with totem-gstreamer

2007-04-07 Thread John Leach
I'm still having the autoplay problem with the latest Feisty updates.
If I insert a dvd ,it autoplays with no problem (minus the menus) but I
can't get Totem to start playing it again manually.

If I open Totem, and click Movie - Play Disc 'FIGHT_CLUB' I get a
message box saying: Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because
you do not have the appropriate plugins to handle it.

It's a bit confusing considering that autoplay works well enough.

Same here. Locks the keyring on suspend with Feisty - didn't on Edgy -

I've just confirmed this with 2 friends laptops, both running Edgy on
ppc.

to clarify test:

1. find a mail folder with some unread mail in
2. using the show combo, select Unread messages
3. mark an unread message as read. it should stay in the list
4. double click on it to open a message view window
5. observe that newly opened message window is blank except for window manager
decorations, menu bar (File, Edit etc., toolbar (Reply, Forward etc.) and an
empty status bar.

[Bug 94953] power button opens two dialogs, consecutively

2007-03-22 Thread John Leach
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

whilst logged in, when I hit the power button I get the usual Logout,
Lock, Switch, Suspend... dialog. If I click cancel it disappears and
then a duplicate dialog fades in again. This happens *every* time I hit
the power button.

This is in Feisty synced with the current repository. I didn't
experience this problem in Breezy, Dapper or Edgy.

I'm on a Sony Vaio VGN-A397XP.

[Bug 77410] nautilus cd burner crashes randomly whilst browsing

2007-01-03 Thread John Leach
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-cd-burner

Whilst browsing my local home directory using Nautilus, I get a bug
buddy dialog reporting that the CD/DVD creator crashed. I think this
happens most when opening a new Nautilus window. I've observed this on
2 different i386 machines, and a powerpc, all running Edgy.

This is not related to burning CDs. It just crashes whilst browsing the

[Bug 70221] erratic copying from search results

2006-11-04 Thread John Leach
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 68221 ***

Public bug reported:

how to reproduce:

open up a folder with lots of files in subdirectories (in my case, 115
files from about 300 directories)

hit CTRL+f and search for a file pattern

hit CTRL+a to select all the results, copy to clipboard and paste into a
new directory (or drag and drop). The copied files list won't match the
search results.

In my case, a copy of 115 search results only copies the first 13 files.
I can copy each file from the results lists individually with no
problems. If I copy in groups of 13 files, I can get anything from 13
files actually copied, to only 2.

[Bug 67791] Re: help shortcut key breaks document search

2006-10-25 Thread John Leach
There is an S next to the menu item. I see now that when you press a
key whilst hovering over the menu item that it sets the shortcut. Nice
feature!

I guess I must have somehow done this by accident. This seems a little
too easy to do accidentally, but then again I've never done it before in
all my years of gnome use (assuming it's not a new feature this week :)

Still, should the shortcuts work whilst typing into the search box?
It's the same with gnome terminal too. It seems kind of wrong to me,
but I guess that's just my opinion.

Sorry to have wasted time.

[Bug 67791] help shortcut key breaks document search

2006-10-23 Thread John Leach
Public bug reported:

This is on Edgy, in sync with the latest repository.

The help shortcut is the s key and seems to be in effect during the
document search utility. Because of this you can't search for anything
with in s in it, as typing that letter just brings up the help app.

A workaround is to just type the search with the caps lock on. The
search is case-insensitive so it still works.

It obviously needs fixing though :)

2006-09-27 Thread John Leach
Public bug reported:

When something crashes and bug-buddy pops up, it displays the crashed
program name during the collecting information stage but doesn't at
the final user-input stage. The user needs to display detail and parse
the gdb output to see what crashed.

Once or twice I've had a crash with a number of different applications
open and wasn't immediately sure which app had crashed. It's rather odd
to get a dialog asking what I was doing when the application crashed and
not knowing which it's asking about!

[Bug 47201] Re: Evince fails to open PDF files in FTP locations

2006-05-28 Thread John Leach
I found a file to test with at ftp://www.tug.org//tex-
archive/dviware/dvipdfm/dvipdfm.pdf

In my tests on Dapper, evince downloaded the file nearly every time out
of the 20 - 30 I tried, but in about 3 cases it failed. It crashed once
with a BadAtom message, another it just hung and needed to force quit
and another time it never displayed a login dialog and ethereal showed
me it never got past ACKing the 220 server message.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ evince
ftp://www.tug.org//tex-archive/dviware/dvipdfm/dvipdfm.pdf
Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x114)!
The program 'evince' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAtom (invalid Atom parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 2408 error_code 5 request_code 20 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I wouldn't consider this a confirmation myself. More people should test
this.
