It's not a crash or a hang. It locks in terms of the screen being blank
and the login password being required to unlock the screen. Also, I put
this glitch down to the xorg package but I could be wrong.

[Bug 1669427] Re: Cannot open audio files in toc.bin

2017-03-02 Thread John Rose
I forgot that I'd copied the .toc & .bin files to another directory. I
then used the .toc file in that directory as the Image file to Brasero.
Silly me! What confused me was the default creation of a .toc file where
Brasero used to create a .cue file by default.

[Bug 1669427] [NEW] Cannot open audio files in toc.bin

2017-03-02 Thread John Rose
Public bug reported:

I created a .toc and toc.bin from a cd using Brasero. I noted that
Brasero used to create a .cue and .bin: I last did this on 19 January
2017. When I try to copy the created .toc, Brasero finds it Ok but then
says that it cannot open each of the audio files in the .toc.bin: please
see attached log.

[Bug 1585635] [NEW] usb networked hard drive not recognised

2016-05-25 Thread John Rose
Public bug reported:

I used to be able to access my usb hard disk (connected to router) in
Nautilus but no longer can do so. This is strange as the router's admin
sees it (screenshot attached).

PS on a thread in AskUbuntu, it suggested using the command "sudo mount -o
nosuid,uid=,gid= //192.168.1.1/USB_Storage/
/media/public/". I tried that but got:
john@Desktop:~$ sudo mount -o nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000

[Bug 1344741] Re: get English(US) even though I have selected English(UK) for keyboard setting

2015-11-11 Thread John Rose
Happens to me intermitttently on this laptop but not on my desktop, both
using Ubuntu 14.04. My guess is that it's only happening after change of
Linux kernel. headers on Software Update. Even though keyboard is shown
as English (UK) (using keyboard 'icon' on top right of screen), keyboard
has become US one (e.g. swapping of @ and " keys). Workaround is to
select English (UK) when it corrects itself back to UK!

I've already tried ssh://user:password@server (in the Search box,

[Bug 1320145] Re: Nautilus does not show type, user, password options on 'Connect to server'

2014-05-19 Thread John Rose
I found the solution in 'Ask Ubuntu'. sshfs package is not automatically
installed on a clean Trusty install. It should be automatically
installed. 'sudo apt-get install sshfs' restart allows (e.g.
ssh://192.168.1.4) entry into Server Address box of 'Connect to Server'
dialog.

[Bug 1276715] Re: Motorola G Android Phone does not connect

2014-02-20 Thread John Rose
I've now found out why Philip Langdale's ppa
(https://launchpad.net/~langdalepl/+archive/gvfs-mtp) did not work. It also
needs /etc/fuse.conf to be amended: uncomment the line for user_allow_other.
Then logout login before attaching the phone by usb cable. This also works
for other phones using MTP e.g. ZTE V790. So my guess is that it will also fox
bug 903422 (for Samsung phones) any related bugs for other phones.
PS Apologies for leaving part of SRU template in my last message.

[Bug 519935] Re: unable to eject cd-rom after burning disk

2014-02-19 Thread John Rose
This happens when multiple copies are requested to be burned. After
ejecting the new DVD manually, it then displays another popup stating
that insertion of a new blank DVD will cause another copy to be created.
However, it doesn't start burning. Workaround is to end brasero process
(in System Monitor) to start brasero again.

Please advise whether a new bug should be created.

[Bug 1276715] Re: Motorola G Android Phone does not connect

2014-02-19 Thread John Rose
I have put a request for a stable release update to the Ubuntu bug
control team.

[Impact]

 * This phone does not cause Nautilus to open a new tab for its SD card
(nor any other action in Nautilus) for Ubuntu 12.04. Bug 903422 (for
Samsung phones) advises opening a new bug for any other phone. Please
note that the Moto G is a very popular phone.

 * PS I've tried using Philip Langdale's ppa
(https://launchpad.net/~langdalepl/+archive/gvfs-mtp) but that makes no
difference. When I contacted him, he stated that the functionality is
now in Ubuntu 13.10 that he would not be changing his ppa.

[Test Case]

 * Connect a Moto G phone by USB cable. In the phone's

[Bug 1276715] [NEW] Motorola G Android Phone does not connect

2014-02-05 Thread John Rose
Public bug reported:

This phone does not cause Nautilus to open a new tab for its SD card (nor any
other action in Nautilus) for Ubuntu 12.04. Bug 903422 (for Samsung phones)
advises opening a new bug for any other phone.
Make: Motorola
Model: Moto G
Release: Android 4.4.2

PS I've tried using Philip Langdale's ppa but that makes no difference.
When I contacted him, he stated that the functionality is now in Ubuntu
13.10 that he would not be changing his ppa.

ls usb shows:
Bus 002 Device 012: ID 22b8:2e82 Motorola PCS

mtp-detect shows:

libmtp version: 1.1.3

[Bug 839157] Re: Bluetooth applet (OBEX send/browse) does not work since Natty (after bluetoothd 4.84 exactly)

2012-12-29 Thread John Rose
I have problems with pairing phones using the Bluetooth manager in Precise.
Solution I found is outlined at:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1976888

It entails using Blueman to manage Bluetooth devices rather than the
default manager.

I've just realised what happened. After today's Lucid package update

without any request from me and no dropping of line. So I set it to

[Bug 457816] Re: cannot play Quicktime media

2010-05-23 Thread John Rose
For Lucid, solution to play Quicktime videos (including URL previously referred
to is:
-Close Firefox.
-Delete the plugins registry file. That should be in your
~/.mozilla/firefox/profile (like .default) folder, where ~/.mozilla
is generally /home/yourname/.mozilla. Delete the file pluginreg.dat, which
firefox will recreate when it starts.
-Using Synaptic Package Manager, ensure that the multiverse repository is
enabled.
-Remove the totem mozilla plugin named totem-mozilla.
-Install gecko-mediaplayer, which automatically installs all of the mplayer
goodness as well.
PS I have vlc installed (for playing of DVDs as it's the only app that always
works for that) but I do not have the vlc-mozilla-plugin package installed.

[Bug 568994] Re: Shutdown, from System Shutdown or via gnome applet not working consistently

2010-05-11 Thread John Rose
I'm getting this on clean install of Lucid (fully up to date) on a
laptop. Nothing happens on the screen after selecting logout, shutdown
or restart. Nothing on dmesg. Kernel is 2.6.32-22-generic. Due to its
intermittent nature, it's difficult to work out the exact circumstances
for the glitch. However, I suspect that if I don't use Open Office (even
though I have the Quickstarter applet loaded), then it works OK. As soon
as I use Open Office, then logout etc doesn't work. dmesg shows nothing.
Please let me know what diagnostics are required.

[Bug 244446] [NEW] inactive menu, inactive launchers and applet icons not all displayed

2008-07-01 Thread John Rose
Public bug reported:

After a recent update from the repositories (under Hardy), a restart was
required and done. After that for one user (admin level) but not for
another user (desktop level), the top menus are no longer active (i.e.
mouse clicking has no effect), the launchers are inactive and the
applets (e.g. user switching, volume control, power, glipper) are no
longer visible. However, the application stop applet is still available.
Also, sometimes both the whole of the top bottom panels disappear,
either initially on login or after some time. Fortunately, the update
manager informatory applet icon appears when a software update is
available. After using Ctrl, Shift Backspace, the login screenn
appears but on login the problem is still present. I suspect that it
might have something to do with the glipper applet, as that sometimes
appears after a long delay.

[Bug 147759] Re: printer crashing when printing PDF

2007-11-14 Thread John Rose
I've tried a number of permutations. There is a web page and 2 pdf files
in the attached tar.gzip file.

This webpage (in Firefox) fails to print on Feisty, Gutsy upgrade from
Feisty Gutsy clean install. But when I paste the contents into Open
Office Word Processor, it prints OK on any of the above PCs.

The User Guide pdf file (using evince Document Viewer) succeeds in
printing pages 1-2 on Gutsy upgrade from Feisty Gutsy clean install.
It fails on Feisty as it can't find the printer (but I think that's
another issue).

The d12 pdf file (using evince Document Viewer) fails to print pages 1-2
on Gutsy upgrade from Feisty Gutsy clean install. It fails on Feisty
as it can't find the printer (as other pdf file). When the contents are
pasted into Open Office Word Processor, it prints OK on any of the above
PCs.
