[Bug 1202235] Re: Newer Version Available

2013-07-18 Thread Jonathan Carter
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1002780 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1002780

@James It's a complicated backport, since it depends on almost all of
GTK and other libraries, so it would take a huge effort to properly
backport. Precise users will unfortunately have to rely on a PPA for the
latest Gimp until 14.04 is released.

[Bug 982680] [NEW] Ubuntu patched gnome-screensaver doesn't show username

2012-04-15 Thread Jonathan Carter
Public bug reported:

Gnome Screensaver is patched so that the bar at the top is removed. The
full name is displayed, if available, but if it's not then the username
isn't displayed at all. (screenshot attached)

This is less than ideal on shared computers and thin client setups.

[Bug 746028] Re: Edubuntu: Wallpapers are not updated on upgrade to Natty

2011-04-19 Thread Jonathan Carter
How bizarre. In both Stéphane and my case, we installed a brand new
maverick machine, installed all the updates, and then used update
manager again to upgrade to the latest development release. And it's
reproducible every singe time on Ubuntu and Edubuntu. I'll look a bit
deeper today to see what actually happens in our systems. I really
thought it would be easier for everyone else to reproduce. Thanks for
the screenshot :)

[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

2010-10-09 Thread Jonathan Carter
Fabián and Steve, do you think it's likely that XDMCP will be available
in GDM again? It seems somewhat deprecated in favour of many newer
technologies that are more likely to be implemented in a login manager.
Are you planning to just mention this release note in every Ubuntu
release then indefinitely? IMHO, since it's not a regression and since
it's probably likely to stay that way, it should probably not have to be
mentioned in the release notes.

For Lucid it was since it might have affected 8.04 - 10.10 upgrades, I
don't believe it's relevant for 10.10 though.

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-04-01 Thread Jonathan Carter
@Dag (#569)

Well, as Mark pointed out before, we really need more data before any
real solid good choices can be made.

Perhaps we should ask ourselves whether buttons should be ordered
according to whether they are most desctructive, or most used.
Personally, I spend more clicks on closing windows than minimizing and
maximizing or restoring them. I'm willing to bet that if if do a study,
you'll find that:

a. Most people also close windows more than any of the other window functions
on the title bar
b. Most users would prefer having the most used actions from LTR if they are a
LTR user

Additionally, if a user clicks on the close button accidentally, most
software will confirm the closing of the window if it's a potentially
destructive close. If not, it's a bug in that software.

I think this is one of those cases where Apple got it right, and I'm
glad that Canonical decided to make this change before release.

[Bug 301666] [NEW] GDM does not depend on xfce4-session

2008-11-24 Thread Jonathan Carter
Public bug reported:

GDM currently requires that one of the following is installed as a
desktop session: gnome-session | xterm | x-window-manager | x-terminal-
emulator

It should have xfce4-session amongst those too, so that I can install
GDM on a machine with Xfce without having GDM bring in the gnome-session
package, which seems to have a higher priority than the xfce4-session,
which will break logins.

This occurs for the Hardy and Intrepid GDM packages, and possibly
earlier versions as well.

[Bug 185607] Re: CD Startup probs, sound/graphic, Install Probs frozen also

2008-09-30 Thread Jonathan Carter
Hi, can you please re-read your bug report and try to rephrase it? Are
you saying that gnome-panel caused screen blankage and intermittent
sound on the live cd? Are these perhaps separate bugs? If they are,
please file separate bugs for them.

[Bug 160414] Re: missing man page for update-desktop-database

2008-08-11 Thread Jonathan Carter
Thanks for the feedback, Martin. Apologies for not tending to it sooner,
I seem to have over-agressive filtering on my LP mail, and it ended up
with a bigger bug stream so I missed it. I'll tend to this later this
week! Thanks for the feedback.

Why is the priority of this bug wishlist? Isn't it policy for every

Debian now?

[Bug 235403] Re: Hangs when Loading a pdf

2008-07-01 Thread Jonathan Carter
I can confirm this bug. It simply displays Loading... the first time
you attempt to open a PDF.

When you open the PDF the second time, it opens fine.

This only occurs with certain PDF files. This is initially reported by a
client, unfortunately I do not have any PDF files myself that fail, I
will upload as soon as I have broken PDF files available.

[Bug 182956] Re: gdm restarts after first login attempt, second time works normally

2008-05-02 Thread Jonathan Carter
If you're experiencing this bug, can you please upload a copy of the
following files directly after this has occurred? It might be best to
provide both before logging in correctly the second time.

 - /var/log/gdm/:0.log
 - /home/(user-you're-logging-on-as)/.xsession-errors

Does this bug occur with any user that logs in, or only specific users?

[Bug 50762] Eject command claims that data is being written to a read only disc

2007-04-15 Thread Jonathan Carter
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When right-clicking on an audio disk on the Gnome desktop and clicking
eject, a dialog pops up claiming that data is being written to the disc.

Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package 'gnome-
desktop'; however, that package was not published in Ubuntu.

[Bug 67378] users-admin does not check usernames for reserved system names/groups

2006-12-23 Thread Jonathan Carter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

In the Ubuntu debian-installer, it checks for reserved names such as
'admin', ie. you can't use admin as the username when creating the first
user.

The Gnome Users and Groups allows you to create a user called admin. If
users shouldn't create users called 'admin', then users-admin should not
allow it.

I mark this as a security vulnerability, because it affects system
security. When a user might unwittingly add a user called admin (which
is quite plausible), and then remove the user again for some reason,
then the group 'admin' will be gone too, which means that no one on the
system will have sudo root access, and updates won't take place, causing
even more potential problems.

 Importance: Medium
