2010-05-19 Thread Justin Dugger
Further investigation reveals the package failed to download correctly.
I don't know how it got to the point of unpacking a broken package, but
removing it from the apt cache and downloading it directly solved the
problem.

[Bug 379973] [NEW] adding recurrance causes segfault

2009-05-24 Thread Justin Dugger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Using jaunty-proposed, I encounter a segfault when adding a recurrence
to an existing appointment:

0xb5c84506 in comp_util_sanitize_recurrence_master (comp=0x97e1660,
client=0x9311b40) at comp-util.c:823
823 comp-util.c: No such file or directory.
in comp-util.c

From the backtrace (provided as a comment attachment), it looks as
though the recent patch addressing recurrance is to blame.

[Bug 253128] Re: Bug report tool incorrectly assigns package yelp

Sorry for the delay; I thought I sent a reply to this. One idea would
be to provide a lineage from who exec'd who, from yelp back to init.
Then you can have a pretty good guess of which package to really file
against. I'm not sure /proc carries that information however.

[Bug 253128] [NEW] Bug report tool incorrectly assigns package yelp

2008-07-29 Thread Justin Dugger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

Several bugs get incorrectly and automatically assigned to yelp, rather
than the package containing the bug. This leads to bugs hiding in odd
places, annoyed yelp triagers and developers, and frustrated users with
more round trips and fewer solved problems.

My guess on how to reproduce:
1. Discover something I want to do but can't
2. Click on Help - Contents
3. Read help and discover I'm not using it wrong, it really is broke here
4. Click on Help - Report a problem in yelp
5. Submit a bug report, leaving the fields filled automatically alone, since
you have no confidence
6. Yet another bug filed against yelp, rather than the program that launched
yelp.

This bug report was generated in this way, so it's at least plausible. I
know it sounds incredulous (Users reading documentation! Incredible!)
so I'm open to alternative explanations.

URL looks fine in .desktop, problem's clearly with the launcher. I
suspect a broken regex.

[Bug 234865] Re: Package glchess fails to install and ask removal of gnome-games

2008-06-22 Thread Justin Dugger
This bug turns out to be derived in part from an error in python-
support, now fixed in Debian:

 python-support (0.8.2) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Fix typo in 0.8.1 changelog entry.
   * update-python-modules:
+ Call dpkg-trigger explicitly when we need it. This should prevent
the trigger from being run *before* the actual installation.

[Bug 221795] Re: Sidebar forces Totem to grow larger than screen

2008-06-05 Thread Justin Dugger
Somehow I don't think this is the appropriate venue for a bug policy
discussion, but here we are. I understand that bug triaging is
difficult work and time consuming, but here we have an example where
action has made it harder to fix bugs rather than easier. Before filing
a bug on this, I went manually browsing through the totem bugs archive.
Nothing looked like a hit, so I filed a bug. To LP's credit it found
this bug, but I find it disturbing that the only bug on the subject is
marked a duplicate, and therefore hidden from view, and even marked
invalid.

The more people we can bring together with similar problems, the faster
it is for developers in to get information, test fixes and generally
close bugs. In this case, marking it invalid means many people will not
see it, and who knows how many minutes will be spent looking for an LP
duplicate that doesn't exist. I think that marking bug duplicates
brings bug reporters together and reduces the total time spent dealing
with bug report duplicates -- the triager has a better idea of where the
dup is than the bug reporter. As best I can tell, there is no duplicate
of this bug in LP.

Since this is really a problem of time, perhaps a bug against LP should
be opened asking for the mark as duplicate action on the left panel to
re-run the dupefinder?

[Bug 211237] [NEW] gdmsetup won't run without gdm running

2008-04-03 Thread Justin Dugger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I have a broken GDM today that runs 100% cpu and won't show a login.
Apparently this is related to the facebrowser. I'd like to turn it off
via the same GUI systems that I enabled it with. I'm able to log in to
the system and GNOME via startx, but when I run gdmsetup, I get an error
that GDM is not running and the program exits.

I don't know what problem this is gdm running check is intended to

[Bug 134779] Cannot run custom launcher

I have a custom application launcher, so that I can connect to a remote screen
session at the click of a button. It's a simple command:

Recently, this stopped working for gutsy. When I click on it, an error message
pops up, saying:

2007-02-11 Thread Justin Dugger
Hmm. That part works as well. But replacing the IP with the netbios
name (jldugger) fails, even though the browser clearly displays both
computers. This works fine on windows, so I doubt it's the router. It
won't work in edgy, due to a known bug. I don't seem to have a Dapper
CD on hand, so I can't test that out immediately.

Obviously using the ip is a workaround, but I don't think the router
gives IPs assoicatively with MACs. And it won't work well for computers
I don't already know the IP of, though I suspect there's a command line
tool for the job. But still, it kinda makes nautilus suck for the job.

Tom,
Clearly the upgrade didn't add user tom to the admin group, or possibly even
create one.

Workaround:
1. run gksudo users-admin
2. Click manage groups
3. Click add Group
4. Put admin as the name of the group, and put whatever users you want to
allow to change system wide settings such as networking.
5. Close the users-admin program and reboot.

But thank you for clarifying that this persists from at original

path. Obviously the best solution would be to add myself to the admin
group, if it exists, but even the Users and Groups tool is broken here.
Thankfully, update-manager launches fine, but the other tools still need
gksudo.

[Bug 59946] Re: run action as root without prompting for a password

2006-10-29 Thread Justin Dugger
Apologies, I guess what I meant to ask was whether anyone was working to
fix this. I consider it broken because figuring out how to launch the
groups tool in the presence of this bug isn't easily discoverable. You
can run it under gksudo at a command line but you still need to figure
out that the tool is named users-admin.

Moved bug to gnome-netstatus-applet, as gnome-applets does not provide
netstatus.

Sourcepackagename: gnome-applets = gnome-netstatus

[Bug 30969] Re: monitor goes to standby when playing a movie in totem fullscreen

2006-10-01 Thread Justin Dugger
I have gnome-power-management to set the screen idle never and it
still goes off after 20 minutes. My fix was to go into xorg.conf and
just comment out the DPMS line for the monitor. So at least, there's a
workaround. Probably not acceptable for laptops though.

[Bug 63270] Re: Network monitor applet distorted

2006-09-30 Thread Justin Dugger
I have the same problem. The spacing is too wide on both the left and
right. Tried looking into gconf, but the only setting I found was which
app to launch for the Configure button.
