Yes, this is still an error. All controls in the connection dialog
remain disabled after the first connection attempt (like in the
screenshot).

[Bug 1786999] [NEW] bluetooth coupling is only possible in certain combinations

2018-08-14 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Initializing a bluetooth coupling on an Android device causes a
notification to be displayed in gnome-shell which doesn't display the
"confirm" or ~"ignore" buttons. When clicking on the notification (which
seems the only intuitive way to make the buttons visible) the
notification disappears and apparently selects to ignore the requests
implicitly. The user has to guess that.

Initializing the coupling from the Ubuntu side works find because the
confirmation has to be performed on the device.

I didn't know this alternative, thanks for the info. However, the
extremely low quality of apport strikes here as well (selecting upload
causes the program to return immediately with return code 0 and no
output which is in conjunction with a missing verbosity switch just
inacceptable).

This is still and issue in Ubuntu 17.10. Firefox opens all kinds of file
browsers which are not the ones preferred by the desktop. In addition to
the above, inside gnome-shell it opens dolphin.

Can we set the referenced upstream bug to be tracked and mark it

[Bug 1739699] [NEW] opening a large number of videos with vlc causes delay and unresponsive vlc

2017-12-21 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. download a free MPlayer test file, like
http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/MPEG-4/video.mp4 and move it into /tmp/a or similar
2. replicate it by running (requires a few GB of free space depending on the
deduplication facilities of your filesystem)

```
import shutil
for i in range(0,1000):
shutil.copy("/tmp/a/video.mp4", "/tmp/a/video-%d.mp4" % (i,))
```
3. open /tmp/a in nautilus, select all files and open them with VLC media
player through the context menu

Instead of putting all files in the VLC queue like Ubuntu 17.04's
nautilus did, an ~"opening in progress" dialog is opened blocking the UI
for almost a minute while consuming 100% of all CPU cores. If the above
is done during high memory consumption of another process hundreds of
VLC processes are started and the display manager crashes (but that's
another issues). If random playback is configured in VLC, it's ignored
and always the last video is played first.

The is no apparent reason why multiple files cannot be opened like in
17.04.

[Bug 1701175] Re: sorting type and inverse sorting flag not persisted in home directory across restarts

2017-08-28 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
> Where do you change the sorting? in the preferences or in the view
menu?

I only see one menu with 4 squares (I meanwhile switched to Xfce desktop
and nautilus might have different icons, but the attached screenshot
should clarify this statement) which I use to set the sorting.

[Bug 1701175] [NEW] sorting type and inverse sorting flag not persisted in home directory across restarts

2017-06-29 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Setting the sorting type (name, size, etc.) and the inverse sorting flag
in the home directory only has an effect until all `nautilus` windows
are closed. When one window is opened again the sorting is reset to last
modified and inverted. This happens 100% of the time and after reboots.

[Bug 1681956] [NEW] gnome-user-share no longer provides gnome-user-share script

2017-04-11 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Since users still have to get Bluetooth running manually following
http://askubuntu.com/questions/131570/how-do-you-make-ubuntu-accept-
files-sent-over-bluetooth because
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-user-share/+bug/1406108
is still not fixed[1] there's need for the `gnome-user-share` script
(usually `/usr/lib/gnome-user-share/gnome-user-share`). It's no longer
provided by `gnome-user-share` and `apt-file find gnome-user-share`
doesn't reveal any location where it could be now.

As alternative, a thought-through intuitive bluetooth setup that not
just somehow, but reliably works in all possible senses would be
appreciated.

[Bug 1672530] [NEW] Large amount of message "localhost systemd-udevd[25252]: Process '/bin/chmod 0666 ' failed with exit code 1." logged to syslog

[Bug 1467187] Re: allow usage of multicore implementations of compression tools

2017-02-19 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
> Not fixed at all, File Roller still uses only one core of my quad-core CPU...
Right, I was confusing this with `nautilus`' archive creation/compress feature.
I guess that parallelization depends on the compression algorithm used, but
`file-roller` doesn't even use parallelization for gzip for which there's a
parallel algorithm out for years, maybe decades.

I have the same issue with `gnome-terminal`, but also other
applications, like `gnome-system-monitor`, on Ubuntu 16.10, so this
might be a more widespread issue.

[Bug 1545272] [NEW] reboot fails with "Failed to start reboot.target: Transaction is destructive."

2016-02-13 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

`sudo reboot` fails with

Failed to start reboot.target: Transaction is destructive.

Broadcast message from richter@richter-lenovo-IdeaPad-U410 on pts/1
(Sa 2016-02-13 13:36:30 CET):

The system is going down for reboot NOW!

which seems to be caused by an incomplete suspend as stated in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1441253 which
isn't a duplicate because the reason seem to be a btrfs issue there
which I don't suffer from.

I'd suggest to let the suspend time out, provide the user with the
information that a suspend is pending and might timeout or succeed (or
something similar, more useful than "Failed to start reboot.target:
Transaction is destructive.") so that reboot is possible again after
some time.

The issue should be fixed in the kernel as well, it makes sense as well
to handle this situation in `systemd` because assuming that the kernel
is always stable is naive and adding such a timeout improves stability
and better feedback usage.

[Bug 1527817] [NEW] unhelpful error message "Parsing filters is unsupported."

2015-12-18 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

  1. download
http://www.speedlink.com/support/bin/sl-8861-b-cd-content-02-26-10.zip
  2. try to extract the `.iso` file into `/tmp/`

The error message `Parsing filters is unsupported.` doesn't provide any
information and doesn't explain if something and what is wrong and thus
needs to be replaced by a message which does that.

[Bug 1527802] [NEW] gedit handles loading a lot of files badly

2015-12-18 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Opening a lot of files, e.g. running `find . -name '*.c' -exec gedit {}

[Bug 1524762] [NEW] Saving a document fails with error "Error opening file '[path to file]': Permission denied"

2015-12-10 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

`evince` seems to create a file with mode 0400 which doesn't make a lot
of sense. The directory is a regular directory created in `nautilus` and
doesn't cause any trouble with other applications (e.g. `libreoffice`

reason for the failure.

[Bug 1519387] Re: nautilus crashes when deleting a file on a cifs mount

2015-11-24 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
> that could be a duplicate of bug #1512826
At most related because the symptoms are different (the window disappears in my
case while `nautilus` freezes in the other) and in my case the crash is
triggered when deleting any file from a `cifs` mount, not just one named
`.trash_1000`.

[Bug 1467943] Re: system shutdown hangs if btrfs on file image (mounted via cifs) is mounted

2015-10-10 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
I can only reach the `systemd` debug shell randomly, i.e. the system
freezes either before I can press Ctrl+Alt+F9, right after it so that I
can't run `journalctl -ab > /root/journal.txt` or right after running
the command so that data isn't written to `/root/journal.txt` because
the system can apparently only be rebooted with Ctrl+Alt+SysRq+b so that
the data is never written to the filesystem (btrfs).

After 5 failures at different states I couldn't recognize any pattern
which causes the freeze. The start of debugging shell works consistently
well if the btrfs image isn't mounted.

[Bug 1492397] [NEW] Ctrl+H doesn't copy selected text into the "search for" text input at first invocation after other text has been replaced

** Description changed:

Currently it's only possible to get the next random image with the
menuitem or the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+M. It'd be
nice to have a trigger button which changes the function of the next
image button to get the next random image and the go back button to get
- the last shown image. It's a bit annoying to have to click twice to
- achieve that with the menu item.

[Bug 1489632] [NEW] gedit fails to display line with 1000000 characters

2015-08-27 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

steps to reproduce:

  1. start `gedit`
  2. produce a line with 100 characters, e.g. with `ipython` in
`gnome-terminal` where you can run `1 * 100` and select all output and
copy it
  3. paste into `gedit`

Parts of the line seems to be rendered over other parts of the line.
This doesn't occur with 10 characters. See attached screenshot for
an example.

[Bug 1489064] [NEW] filesystem column for used space both indicates absolute and relative space

2015-08-26 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

The column indicating the used space both indicates the absolute space
in form of the number label and the relative space in form of the
progress bar. This doesn't make sense and it'd be nice for the user to
be able to sort by relative and absolute used/free space. Thus, it'd
make sense to split the label with the number and progress bar into two
sortable columns.

[Bug 1468078] [NEW] after entering path where to open file user has no idea which directory he_she is in

2015-06-23 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

The path needs to be displayed at all times (there's no case where the
user wants to be lost in an unknown directory). If entering the path
fails, there seems to be a fallback which can't be determined, i.e. the
user needs to guess from the directory structure or use `gedit` on the
command line for certain pathes exclusively.

[Bug 1467187] [NEW] allow usage of multicore implementations of compression tools

2015-06-20 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

It'd be great to be able to use compression formation implementations
which allow multicore CPU usage (e.g. `pigz` for gunzip, `pbzip2` for
bzip2, etc.). Imo there's no argument against using them by default
because most user just will see an significant increase of speed with
some decent default values for parallelization options (`-p` of `pigz`,
etc.) based on the CPU (cores).

[Bug 395322] Re: Load averages should be moved to Resources tab

2015-06-19 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
After the redesign mentioned in the upstream bug there's no system load
displayed at all. It'd make sense to add a resource monitor for it (like
there's for CPU, memory and network). Reopen this issue or create a new
one?

[Bug 1458491] [NEW] indicator-bluetooth misses controls to enable file transfer

2015-05-25 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

The default settings of `indicator-bluetooth` make file transfers fail
without feedback (not too great, but not the issue here). One has to
install `bluemon` and enable file transfer options like ~allow
read/write and ~allow trusted devices. The user expects `indicator-
bluetooth` to offer a sufficient set of options to transfer file which
is a quite basic task for bluetooth connections. The options should be
added to sufficient hints displayed in the application (e.g. a hint that
the settings aren't implemented yet and that one needs to manage the
device with `bluemon` like described above).

[Bug 1448656] Re: systemd doesn't allow proper shutdown after it encountered errornous .service

2015-04-27 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
I can't reproduce this. I produces the errornous service by adding a
shell variable declaration to the .service file e.g.

[Unit]
Description=A service triggering an error

X=Y
env X=Y

[Service]
Environment=A=B
ExecStart=echo $A

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

I could trigger the failure by moving the file out of
`/lib/systemd/system` (to `/root`) and back, but I no longer have the
file. The failure seems to have occured due to the root filesystem being
corrupted by a failing `flashcache` write-back and the fact that I could
suppress the issue and recreate it (only once) a random correlation. I
no longer have the original file, but I'm sure it was correct besides
the variable declaration.

[Bug 1448656] [NEW] systemd doesn't allow proper shutdown after it encountered errornous .service

2015-04-26 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Assume you have created a `.service` unit file in `/lib/systemd/system/`
with a syntax error and reboot. At system start the start of the unit
fails, but then the system/`systemd` no longer responds to
kbdCtrl/kbd+kbdAlt/kbd+kbdDel/kbd and the system needs to be
killed by pulling the plug. That can corrupt the system because services
which on shutdown hook, like a write-back cache which needs to write
data back to disks before the machine is turned of, aren't executed.

It'd be better if the errornous service/unit would be skipped, a rescue
shell provided or at least a possibility to shutdown properly given.

[Bug 1447357] [NEW] reduce delay before loading icon is displayed

2015-04-22 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

When it takes time to display the content of a directory an animated
loading icon is displayed in the lower right directory view window
corner. In situation where the system is under heavy load it can take up
to one minute until this loading icon is displayed leaving the user to

icon is displayed earlier in order to avoid such confusion.

[Bug 1439704] [NEW] increase default scrollback limit

2015-04-02 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

There's a really high change that (verbose) commands exceed 8192 lines
out output and a very small chance that a high multiple (e.g.
8192*8192=67108864) causes any disadvantage. I think that setting a
limit is already problematic - imagine running `btrfs check` for some
hours and figuring out that most of you output is lost (might even be a
problem with a scrollback limit of 67108864). Even a `~/.bash_history`
of 50 MB shouldn't be a problem regarding average HDD size, btrfs
compression and the ability to set `HISTSIZE` and `HISTFILESIZE`.

[Bug 1437742] Re: gnome-terminal never returns after heavy load btrfs operations (defragment, balance, etc.)

2015-03-29 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Thanks for you feedback. I guess, I could get it up to once a week
(using an overful btrfs root system on which the btrfs command cause a
very high load) ;) . I'll figure out `strace` and try to share results.

[Bug 1437742] [NEW] gnome-terminal never returns after heavy load btrfs operations (defragment, balance, etc.)

2015-03-28 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Running `btrfs` commands which cause heavy system load (e.g. `btrfs
filesystem defragment`, `btrfs balance`, etc.) in `gnome-terminal`
causes the terminal never to return and use one CPU core at 100 %
forever. There's no connection to the system load because interrupting
that command (e.g. `btrfs filesystem defragment` with `SIGSTOP`) don't
make `gnome-terminal` return, but keep hanging forever.

[Bug 1435796] [NEW] save file dialogs fail after entering a folder name when permission to create is denied

2015-03-24 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

When the user doesn't have enough permissions to create a folder in a
directory the creation fails after he_she enters a possibly long and
sophisticated name, which has no advantage over making the creation fail
right after the Create folder button has been pressed and permissions

[Bug 1432266] [NEW] Allow refreshing folder content by clicking on the folder button in the path after something has been mounted under that folder

2015-03-14 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Currently it is necessary to open another folder (e.g. the parent
directory by clicking on the button to the left in the path) or refresh
explicitly after the mount took place. After mounting e.g. on the
command line a user might expect the folder content to be reloaded when
clicking on the folder button on the path and there's no reason to match
that expectation.

Example:

  1. go to /path/to/folder (path buttons are `path` `to` `folder`)
  2. `mount /some/thing /path/to/folder`
  3. click on the path button `folder` - nothing happens (refresh or clicking
path buttons `to` and `folder` is necessary)

The result for 3. should be:

  3. click on the path button `folder` which triggers refresh for
directory content because a mount point has been added whose target
matches `/path/to/folder`

[Bug 1431979] [NEW] gdm reveals the last screen right before locking screen after screen turned black

2015-03-13 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

After my screen is turned off due to inactivity and I return to the PC
(after the screen has been turned off for some time) and move the mouse
the login screen (for locked session) is displayed, but not immediately
- the last visible screen before I left the PC is visible for some
instants (can be up to several seconds if the system is under load) and
reveals what should be protected by session locking. `lightdm` does the
job better by showing the session lock screen immediately.
