[Bug 818157] Re: Evolution Backup Files Incorrectly Reported (AGAIN)

2013-05-17 Thread Kip Warner
I'm having the same problem. I'm using Evolution 3.6.4 under Ubuntu
Raring 13.04 (amd64).

If I watch a backup from GDB, this is what I observe:

process 30858 is executing new program: /usr/lib/evolution/3.6/evolution-backup

[Bug 1178826] [NEW] Evolution spamassassin integration not working 13.04

2013-05-10 Thread Kip Warner
Public bug reported:

For each attempt to scan an email for junk via spamassassin, the following is
noted in /var/log/mail.err:
spamc[7611]: connect(AF_UNIX) to spamd failed: Connection refused

I am using evolution 3.6.4.

My SpamAssassin appears to be configured correctly from what I can see
as well:

$ cat /etc/default/spamassassin
# /etc/default/spamassassin
# Duncan Findlay

# WARNING: please read README.spamd before using.
# There may be security risks.

# Change to one to enable spamd
ENABLED=1

# Options
# See man spamd for possible options. The -d option is automatically added.

# SpamAssassin uses a preforking model, so be careful! You need to
# make sure --max-children is not set to anything higher than 5,
# unless you know what you're doing.

OPTIONS=--create-prefs --max-children 5 --helper-home-dir

# Pid file
# Where should spamd write its PID to file? If you use the -u or
# --username option above, this needs to be writable by that user.
# Otherwise, the init script will not be able to shut spamd down.
PIDFILE=/var/run/spamd.pid

# Set nice level of spamd
#NICE=--nicelevel 15

# Cronjob
# Set to anything but 0 to enable the cron job to automatically update
# spamassassin's rules on a nightly basis
CRON=1

The process appears to be running as well:

$ ps aux | grep spam
kip 2789 0.0 0.8 131616 32988 ?SMay09 0:09 /usr/bin/perl
-T -w /usr/sbin/spamd --socketpath /run/user/kip/spamd-socket-path-2WUQWW
--max-children=1 --pidfile /run/user/kip/spamd-pid-file-JWUQWW
kip 2805 0.0 1.3 141548 52784 ?SMay09 0:08 spamd child
root 18498 0.0 1.4 155436 57264 ?Ss 13:47 0:01
/usr/sbin/spamd --create-prefs --max-children 5 --helper-home-dir -d
--pidfile=/var/run/spamd.pid
root 18551 0.0 1.4 159100 60480 ?S13:48 0:00 spamd child

kip 23006 0.0 0.0 16632 944 pts/10 S+ 14:28 0:00 grep

This was working fine in 12.04, but stopped working upon a fresh install
to 13.04.

[Bug 958847] [NEW] Rhythmbox MTP plugin blocks digital camera mount

2012-03-18 Thread Kip Warner
Public bug reported:

I am using Rhythmbox 0.13.1, with version 0.13.1-0ubuntu6.1 of the
rhythmbox-plugins package installed. I am using amd64 hardware with
Maverick.

While trying to isolate why some digital cameras were failing to mount,
we inadvertently discovered that Rhythmbox's MTP plugin was preventing
this. See Bug #581087 for the complete details to date.

[Bug 576059] Re: Gnome focus problem / hanging

2012-02-04 Thread Kip Warner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 578040 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/578040

X181, I've been having exactly the same problem and it has been driving
me nuts. I'm using Maverick (amd64). I see this bug is marked as a
duplicate of #578040, but I question its relevance because I am using an
external keyboard nowhere near my touch pad.

X181, I wonder if it may have something to do with our peripherials? I
am using a Razer Lachesis mouse and a Razer Lycosa keyboard.

I did, however, find a workaround today. If you can break into a virtual
terminal or shell into the machine from elsewhere, kill gnome-settings-
daemon and then restart the process. Input focus is restored.

[Bug 193010] Re: slow Eye of GNOME start

I am also having the same problem. As mihai007 on 2007-01-10 here,

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eog/+bug/78710

, the problem is probably with image collection preview scanning the
directory preemptively even when the pane isn't activated. This isn't a
wishlist, but definitely a bug since it can be a real show stopper with
folders containing images in the thousands.

[Bug 809518] [NEW] Message about unsupported disc type needs to be improved

2011-07-12 Thread Kip Warner
Public bug reported:

I am using Brasero 2.32.0-0ubuntu2 on amd64 hardware. When I attempted
to burn an ISO to an optical disc not supported by my drive, it gave the
following error message in the log:

...
BraseroGrowisofs stdout: Executing 'builtin_dd

BraseroGrowisofs called brasero_job_set_dangerous
BraseroGrowisofs stderr: :-[ READ DVD STRUCTURE #10h failed with
SK=0h/ASC=00h/ACQ=03h]: Input/output error
...

This is not so useful to most users. It took me a long time to figure
out what the problem was. I was using a DVD-R DL type disc, but my drive
does not support that. See below in the Features section for the
supported types.

$ hwinfo --cdrom

Hey Pedro, I'm not running Natty, so this is difficult to confirm there.
This bug will happen regardless of the distribution version. It isn't
dependent on that. It's dependent on the version mismatch between the

[Bug 772070] [NEW] evince DVI support barely usable

2011-04-27 Thread Kip Warner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

I am not sure if this is a set of bugs, or just a lack of features, but
Evince appears to be severely lacking in functionality with respect to
DVI, as contrasted to PDF. Some observations:

(1) It doesn't seem to be able to display the copyright symbol.
(2) The navigation tree is empty.
(3) The text layer is non-existent, so you can't select any text.

I know these are problems in Evince and not the document, since I am
generating the document from texinfo source that doesn't have any of
those problems when it pumps out as a PDF.

[Bug 688245] [NEW] clock-applet doesn't alert user of EDS version mismatch

2010-12-09 Thread Kip Warner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

The clock-applet's calendar displays no events if gnome-panel was built
against a different version of EDS than installed when the API breaks.
It should probably display a user level notification of this so users
don't think their calendar is actually gone. Perhaps the calendar GUI
could be replaced with an icon of a question mark or broken link or
something.

Tralalalala, I get the feeling that you began typing your rebuttal

[Bug 21202] Re: Clipboard is erased after closing program. affects multiple programs.

2010-02-19 Thread Kip Warner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 11334 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/11334

Stop using these kind of amateuristic operating systems. If you've got
the money, just buy a Mac. It also has Unix-roots, it's fast and stable
and everything just works.

Like you, I agree a better clipboard implementation is needed. But
suggesting one succumb to non-free software as an alternative is
unethical. Features are important, but in enumerating them, you suggest
to us that your values are limited to superficial engineering values
(speed, robustness, portability, features, and so on). Many of us, while
considering those important as well, have human rights preceding these
things. But that you are here in the first place, suggests that you came
not out of principle, but as an alternative option, another flavour, if
you will, of what you'd naturally prefer. Having said that, all I can
say is that you have unfortunately missed the entire point of the
philosophy of free software and would do well to either broaden your
mind and actually read the GNU literature (gnu.org/philosophy), or stick
to the McSoftware.

On another note, there is nothing to stop you from patching Xorg
yourself. If upstream does not cooperate, hear them out and listen to
what they have to say. There are typically two reasons why patches are
not accepted on an active project: (1) Your idea is sound, but your
technical approach is lacking; (2) Philosophically, what you are trying
to do is not in harmony with the project's goals, the technical approach
irrelevant.

If you disagree with their (2) response, there is nothing to stop you
from forking the project. Indeed, this is done more often than you
think. glibc, the heart of the GNU operating system, was swapped right
out under your feet in Karmic with most people being none the wiser. It
was replaced with eglibc. eglibc is a fork of glibc, for philosophical
reasons.

If you don't want to fork it, there is nothing to stop you from patching
at the package maintainers level. Indeed, most of the official packages
contain distribution level patches. You can see this in the
debian/patches directory in many of the Debian / Ubuntu source packages.

This is duplicated easily at my end, but only about 1/3 times or so. The
rest of the times the track just plays normally without Rhythmbox
exiting. Running from gdb, I couldn't capture a stack trace, but it did
- note that it exits without segfaulting with code 1.
+ note that it exits without segfaulting with code 1. Note that this

I also confirm this bug. I manually ran md5sum on the contents of the

through the local loop back device. The checksums file by file are fine.

[Bug 363986] [NEW] evolution IMAP folder summary count wrong

2009-04-20 Thread Kip Warner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution IMAP folders display the wrong number of items in them
sometimes, even when forcing a manual refresh. When I actually click on
the folder that I know has nothing in it, the folder item count still
won't update. Look at the screenshot. You'll see the Unlearn folder says
it has one item in it, but it's actually empty even after purging trash.

[Bug 363986] Re: evolution IMAP folder summary count wrong

2009-04-20 Thread Kip Warner
Hey Sebastien. It is reproduceable, but non-deterministic. It's strange
because Evolution must know the real count within the folder, since it
displays the correct one when I browse the folder inside when it shows
nothing in it, but it doesn't always update the actual count in the
folder name.

Sorry, I don't have Jaunty and won't until it's stable is released.

The print queue is part of the system and isn't a part of the
application level normally. It makes sense that in certain environments
that *printing* doesn't happen necessarily immediately, but it doesn't
make sense that enqueuing shouldn't be instantaneous.

It was difficult to reproduce and we only had it happen on dual core

sounds since that is usually the method to track down the problem. But I

2008-02-05 Thread Kip Warner
True. I hate to say it, but they were a rather miserable bunch to have
to deal with. At least as far as those who were around in their irc
channel back when I tried to explain it to them. Basically it went
something like this, there is a problem, here is what is happening,
here is a stack trace, steps to reproduce, and I've even done some
debugging for you and know exactly what line it is raising the exception
at. The response was something like, it works fine for everyone else,
so it must be something you're doing wrong. There isn't any problem,
because if there was one, we might have to do something about it. So I
just left it at that and went about my business.
