[Bug 778569] [NEW] Play login sound is unchecked in Login Screen settings by default, even though the login screen is playing sound
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm This is a very small problem, but something that's bothering me. The very first things I do after a clean install of Ubuntu is to disable the sound at the login window. The problem is, when I start System - Login Screen Settings, the Play login sound setting is unchecked by default. I have to check and uncheck it again to disable the sound. This was the case in Maverick too and still in Natty. It's really not a big problem, but may confuse new Ubuntu users. They start Login Screen Settings to disable the sound at the login window only to see that it is already unchecked and it will only confuse and frustrate them. Therefore the Play login sound setting should be checked by default. If there is a reason I don't get for the entry being unchecked by default on purpose, with the sound playing at the login screen, someone please elaborate. In that case, the settings are not obvious to me and won't be to any new user. ** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: login sound -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/778569 Title: Play login sound is unchecked in Login Screen settings by default, even though the login screen is playing sound -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 313228] Re: a program is still running but i want shut down anyway
The program is still running. shut down anyway dialog appears to me too, but only after using Firefox. When I don't open FF at all in a session, I don't get the dialog either. Sometimes when I close FF and try to reopen it, I get a message that firefox-bin is still running, and my cursor is busy, so I have to wait for the browser to close properly before restarting it. Obviously I'm just guessing, but something like that must be going on with the shut down situation. When I'm shutting down fast after closing FF, I sometimes get the dialog and sometimes don't, but I surely don't get it when I wait a little after closing the browser and only then inititiate a shut down. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/313228 Title: a program is still running but i want shut down anyway -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 588155] Re: randomly gnome-settings-daemon fails to start
If i may inquire... now, that Martin has provided a backtrace, is the problem being looked into by a developer now (as the bug is still set to unassigned)? [Bug 588155] Re: randomly gnome-settings-daemon fails to start
The bug just returned for me on Maverick. As a result, I'm going to remove it now, and never use it again. Instead I'm going to use my Lucid install (which doesn't show the symptom) whenever I want to use Ubuntu. I'll be back for Natty if the problem somehow magically resolves itself by then or someone finally looks into it. Unfortunately, those are big ifs. Until then I'm going to find another up-to-date Gnome/Linux distro for my main OS. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/588155 Title: randomly gnome-settings-daemon fails to start -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 588155] Re: randomly gnome-settings-daemon fails to start
This problem keeps appearing for me since yesterday. Just as in the bug description, when I log in, sometimes the ambiance theme doesn't load and I get the default GTK-Theme instead. I have to either log out and log back in or start the appearances window to solve this annoying issue. Also, even tough I don't know whether this is normal or not (I usually don't fiddle around with appearance settings, but use the defaults instead), when I'm selecting ambiance, after restart or log in-log out it is set to custom. Again, I have no clue if this is relevant. I'm using Ubuntu 64bit desktop edition on an Asus EeePC 1005PE. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/588155 Title: randomly gnome-settings-daemon fails to start -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 588155] Re: randomly gnome-settings-daemon fails to start
Here some additional information about the problem appearing on Ubuntu 10.10: If I type 'ps aux | grep settings' in the terminal gnome-settings-daemon isn't shown. If i type gnome-settings-daemon the ambiance theme starts. I also get the error message: ** (gnome-settings-daemon:3606): WARNING **: Got less number of items in credentials hash table than expected! After that 'ps aux | grep settings' show gnome-settings-daemon running. I don't know if this is relevant, but if I type in gnome-settings-daemon after that again, I get the following error message: ** (gnome-settings-daemon:3693): WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.gnome.SettingsDaemon ** (gnome-settings-daemon:3693): WARNING **: Could not acquire name The ambiance theme not loading on startup is very annoying. Now it happens every time I log in. ** Attachment added: xsession-errors https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/588155/+attachment/1763249/+files/.xsession-errors -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/588155 Title: randomly gnome-settings-daemon fails to start -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets
I'm having this problem since I'm using Ubuntu (Jaunty), I had it with Karmic and now with Lucid. Sometimes, when I log in, the gnome panel is all messed up. In Lucid the affected areas are the Notification Area and the Indicator Applet Session. My only solution to this problem for a long time was to log out and log back in again. This procedure gets on your nerves quickly. But in Lucid I finally find the culprit in my case: the NetworkManager Applet (nm-applet). I removed everything - except the Window List - from the bottom panel, then I removed the Notification Area from the top panel and placed it on the bottom panel in the right corner. As a result of not having the Notification Area (and with it the NetworkManager Applet) on the top panel anymore, my Indicator Applet Session isn't corrupted anymore, no matter how many times I log in. The only icon I have in the Notification Area now is that of the NetworkManager Applet. Even if the nm-applet icon is corrupted when I log in (which happens often), the corruption doesn't affect the Window List and icons placed in the Notification Area after startup (for example the vlc icon when I start the program). So bottom line: I have basically quarantined my Notification Area (and with it the NetworkManager Applet) in the lower right corner of desktop. This is an adequate solution, but still I would really like to see this bug finally fixed, since it's affecting me for a long time. -- visual corruption affecting several panel applets https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/439448 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
