[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11 after logging "MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events handled properly?"

2024-05-22 Thread Leonardo Cerasi
In Ubuntu 22.04.4 with NVidia driver 535.171.04 and windowing system
X11, I downloaded and installed the packages recommended in #135: after
a reboot, my terminal was fixed.

Thank you @vanvugt!

[Bug 1890632] [NEW] Can't open preferences

2020-08-06 Thread Leonardo Jeanteur
Public bug reported:

I can't seem to access the rhymbox preferences.
'Preferences' does not appear in the application menu (see attachment) since
ubuntu 17.10.
I was still able to edit the preferences from the menu under the song slider,
but I have now accidentally removed the whole top bar (with the current song,
the previous, next, pause buttons, and that menu button).

So now I can't open the preferences, nor see the current song anymore,
or have it display again.

Note that the option in the view menu might have been from the
Alternative-Toolbar plugin

A temporary fix to get the view menu again would be appreciated too.

Opening and using rhythmbox does not print error messages, but closing does:

[Bug 1890494] [NEW] Closing Rhythmbox does not free the media keys

2020-08-05 Thread Leonardo Jeanteur
Public bug reported:

Closing Rhythmbox, does not free the media keys, and no program can use
them after that, not even Rhythmbox if you restart it.

This seems to be very close to bug #1036489, but that one was active 8
years ago, and was marked as expired 6 years ago.

Restarting the machine frees the media keys again.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Verify that the media keys work (restart the machine if not)
2. close rhythmbox with right click on the taskbar icon, use "stop & quit"
3. reopen rhythmbox, the media keys do not work.

1. Verify that the media keys work (restart the machine if not)
2. End the 'rhythmbox' process
3. reopen rhythmbox, the media keys do not work.

1. Verify that the media keys work (restart the machine if not)
2. in rhythmbox go to preferences -> plugins -> click preferences for any plugin
3. click the 'restart' next to "Restart the player for the changes to take
effect"
4. once rhythmbox restarts, the media keys do not work anymore.

[Bug 1036489] Re: Closing Rhythmbox doesn't close Rhythmbox and causes confusing key-binding behavior

2020-08-05 Thread Leonardo Jeanteur
This still affects me in Ubuntu 20.04.

Fully closing Rhythmbox does not free up the media keys, and if you
reopen it later the media keys will not work (and won't work for other
programs either)

Different ways to reproduce (note that the only way to have the media
keys working again is to restart the machine)

1. Verify that the media keys work (restart the machine if not)
2. close rhythmbox with right click on the taskbar icon, use "stop & quit"
3. reopen rhythmbox, the media keys do not work.

[Bug 1859113] [NEW] No support for Zstandard

2020-01-09 Thread Leonardo Müller
Public bug reported:

As stated on https://facebook.github.io/zstd/

"Zstandard is a real-time compression algorithm, providing high
compression ratios. It offers a very wide range of compression / speed
trade-off, while being backed by a very fast decoder".

Other Linux distributions even started to use the Zstandard in the place
of xz compression for their packages due to how fast the decompression
is, even if there is a small penalty on ratio. On my own testing, I
noticed 17% faster compression and 88% faster decompression compared to
xz while there was a 3% differences on compression ratio for system
images.

With this bug report, I ask to add support for Zstandard on at least
file-roller. Currently, I have to use the command line tool zstd to work
with files compressed using Zstandard. On Thunar, *.zst files appear as
unknown and file-roller says there is no support for this file type.

[Bug 1855626] [NEW] All sound halts for one minute at midnight on Mondays

2019-12-08 Thread Leonardo Jeanteur
Public bug reported:

Every week, on Monday at 00:00 all sound halts until the clock turns to 00:01.
(Note as I often get confused with midnight/midday notations, I am referring to
the minute after Sunday 23:59).

When this happened the rhythmbox process had been running for more than
a day, and I do not know if this happens if rhythmbox was launched on
Sunday.

I can confirm at the very least that this happened twice when the process was
started on the previous Wednesday, and once on the previous Friday at 12:12.
This bug happened to me many more times, but I did not check the process'
information those times.

The song timer stops during this minute.
The last time this happened the song skipped a minute when it resumed, but from
what I remember of the previous times the song had started off where it stopped
(I could remember wrong though). The only difference I can think of between the
last occurrence and the previous ones would be that I did not use any buttons
this time around.

What I expected to happen:
The current song keeps playing
What happened instead:
The song halted for one minute

Steps to reproduce:
#1 Open Rhythmbox (if possible not on Sunday)
#2 Wait for Sunday
#3 Start listening to music before Sunday 23:59:59
#4 Wait for Monday 00:00 while music is still playing
The song will stop until 00:01

[Bug 1778069] [NEW] nautilus don't open files if set as default file manager

2018-06-21 Thread Leonardo Müller
Public bug reported:

If Nautilus is set as the preferred file manager with exo-preferred-
applications, it no longer opens files. It opens only directories,
.desktop files and executable files. Trying to open a file, be using
Enter or with double mouse click, as a text file or a video makes
Nautilus window blink for a instant and nothing happens. To be able to
open the files, it's needed to choose to open with another application
and then choose the application.

Once Nautilus is unset as the default file manager (Thunar is chosen,
for example), it starts to work fine again, opening files properly.

[Bug 1754862] Re: Screen remains active on lid close

2018-04-21 Thread Leonardo Donelli
I spoke to soon. Even with gnome tweak tool option to ON and
HandleLidSwitch=ignore in /etc/systemd/logind.conf , the screen remains
active when the lid is closed.

(In my previous test it turned off because I didn't set =ignore in
logind.conf yet so it was actually going in standby).

[Bug 1754862] Re: Screen remains active on lid close

2018-04-21 Thread Leonardo Donelli
Ok, I've found the problem.

This was due to a setting I had enabled in "Gnome Tweak Tool": "Suspend
when laptop lid is closed" to OFF

Setting this option to OFF (the default is ON) adds an autostart link in
.config/autostart/ignore-lid-switch-tweak.desktop, which runs the
/usr/lib/gnome-tweak-tool/gnome-tweak-tool-lid-inhibitor utility, which
creates a logind inhibitor:

systemd-inhibit --list

[...]

 Who: gnome-tweak-tool-lid-inhibitor (UID 1000/learts, PID
22291/gnome-tweak-too)
What: handle-lid-switch
 Why: user preference
Mode: block

[...]

"Mode: block" means that the signal is blocked and not passed to the
other parts which may be handling the lid switch, including what I
assume is the standard code handling the screen poweroff.

By toggling the option to ON, the inhibitor goes away and the screen is
turned off when I close the lid.

Therefore, I advise everyone against using the "Suspend when laptop lid is
closed" option in gnome tweak tools. A much better way to diisable suspend on
lid cose is to edit /etc/systemd/logind.conf
and set HandleLidSwitch=ignore.
There are also the additional options of HandleLidSwitchDocked and

[Bug 1764872] [NEW] When in fullscreen, the buttons to minimize and close don't appear when hovering the mouse

2018-04-17 Thread Leonardo Müller
Public bug reported:

When in fullscreen, the buttons that should appear when hovering the
mouse cursor centered on the top of the display don't appear. They still
have the function but, as it's impossible to see them, it's not possible
to see if the button will close or minimize the session.

I'm using vinagre with the VNC protocol to see and use my desktop, which
is in the local network.

I had this bug with virt-manager in Artful. It's curious to see it back,
but now in vinagre.

Ok, sorry for the late answer. Attached here is a fragment of journal

Keep in mind that I launched the command in a different configuration
(external monitor attached configured as the single display) and without
triggering the bug beforehand. Should I reupload any of the attachments
immediately after having triggered the bug? i.e. after closing and
reopening the lid using the laptop display that remains active.

[Bug 1616332] Re: gnome-software using hundreds of MB of memory when not in use

2017-11-22 Thread Leonardo Donelli
I do not seem to have the memory leak problem (the used RAM doesn't seem
to grow constantly and without bounds), but still it uses constantly
almost 200 MB of memory, which seems kind of unacceptable to me for an
application which is usually run rarely or not at all for people who
prefer using apt. I get that terminal users should not be the main
concern of the OS/DE developers, but still, an option to disable the
gnome-software autostart would be nice.

[Bug 1184186] [NEW] Macbook running Ubuntu 13.04 stop working when suspended

2013-05-25 Thread Leonardo
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu 13.04 in macbook retina and everytime I suspend (or
suspend closing) the notebook its screen stays completely black and I
can heard the sound that it is still working, it does not suspend and it
does not return from this state. I tried to click on all keyboard keys
and some combinations as well as using the touchpad. Anyway, it really
does not work after being suspended. It continues on (does not really
suspend) and does not work so that I have to hold the turn off button
and turn it on again. I think this is a main issue, and probably others
are having the same problem (maybe not just with macs).

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity Global Menu

2013-05-16 Thread Leonardo Donelli
Selection bias. This is a bug report in which the global menu functionality on
unmaximized windows is reported as a bug. Of course the vast majority of people
on this page are against this feature. So I'll speak in favor of it.
Personally i love global menu (both on maximized and unmaximized windows) and
it's *the* feature that keeps Ubuntu my OS of choice. Since when I got used to
it no global menu - not an options as personal OS (and my screen is
1600x900, for those saying that if the screen is 1280x1024, than global menu
is bad)
For those talking about auto-hiding and 'easy discovery of menu options':
there's HUD for that now. It's amazing. The concept behind it has been proved
successful in the past, on desktops: dash/launchers vs desktop icons, web
search engines vs web directories.
Example: I wonder if GIMP has a function for lens flare. With HUD i press alt
and type 'flare'. With the menu, i explore lists and sublists of menus
categories until I find it (assuming I don't miss it)- The only case when the
normal menus are better is when I want to just 'explore' the options, without
looking for anything in particular (Let's see if there is something cool),
How many times does that happens? 1 per application per lifetime? Well, for
that time you can do the enormous effort of moving the mouse a little higher.
A lot of people here lamenting Unity sounds a lot like those windows users that
try some distro and say Where is the start button? What, there isn't one?!
This OS is stupid!.

That being said, unless it's difficult to implement (I doubt it) I don't
see why not give the users the option to disable it.

[Bug 1170647] Re: Nautilus opens new window instead of restoring the minimized window

2013-05-11 Thread Leonardo Donelli
I tried to give a look into the problem, even though i'm not expert in unity
internals, GTK, desktop files, ecc. There is a big chaos. There is a
transition going on between using nautilus.desktop and nautilus-home.desktop
(apparently Unity used to use nautilus-home.desktop but is converging to the
standard nautilus.desktop), as a result there are various .desktop files.
There are also .desktop files for the mounted external drives (and launcher
icons for external drives have strange / incosistent behaviour, by the way:
when clicking on them the nautilus window that opens is 'assigned' to the
nautilus launcher [the small arrow is on that] but the drive launcher still
controls it: it can bring the window on foreground if it isn't).
On top of that, nautilus already has functions to determine if a specific
location is already open, and in that case it avoids opening a new window for
it (unless you use the --new-window parameter).

[Bug 124440] Re: Ubuntu needs a way to set mouse scrolling speed

2013-05-09 Thread Leonardo Donelli
Just a reminder: if you have ultra-fast scrolling speed in some MS
bluetooth mouses, this is a 'universal' bug (happens in Windows too).
Removing the bluetooth dongle and reinserting it usually resolves it.

[Bug 646798] Re: eog window size exceeds screen height

2013-05-09 Thread Leonardo Donelli
** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: eog
+ * IMPACT *
+ Eye of gnome (eog), sometimes has a window size that exceeds the screen
height, which makes the bottom of the window (mostly the status bar) invisible.

- Hi !
+ * HOW TO REPRODUCE *
+ 1. Open this image with eye of gnome:

- As of 09-24-2010 (eog 2.31.92), when opening a picture with eog, the
- window size always exceeds the screen height ; which makes it impossible
- to see its status bar without holding alt and moving the window.
+ (Note: it is not guaranteed to trigger the bug on every resolution, but
+ should work for the most common screen resolutions)

- Please note it does occur from a fresh install / blank home directory as
- well.
-
- If necessary and if other people manage to reproduce this issue, I will
- write an upstream bug report ASAP.
-
- Cheers !
-
- ProblemType: Bug
- DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10
- Package: eog 2.31.92-0ubuntu1

+ * REGRESSION POTENTIAL *
+ The patch is short and simple, has a limited (if not null) potential to
regression.
+ But it could:
+ - Generate strange / inadequate window size when viewing an image in eye of
gnome
+ - Other problems related to window/view/image size when viewing an image in
eye of gnome

[Bug 646798] Re: eog window size exceeds screen height

2013-05-09 Thread Leonardo Donelli
Ops, sorry, I forgot to update.
Immediately after my last message I started working on a patch. Turns out it
was quite trivial, and I've produced one I proposed upstream (which already has
a positive review) and I asked what to do downstream in IRC (#unbutu-desktop).
cyphermox and robru reviewed my patch, considered it good enough and suitable
to SRU, and cyphermox is currenly packaging it.

[Bug 822993] Re: Applying Permissions to enclosed files in Nautilus' Folder Properties window doesn't work

2013-05-06 Thread Leonardo Donelli
It was never a bug in the first place, just bad design:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=663649#c3
Cosimo Cecchi, Nautilus developer, said:
Apply permissions to enclosed files button is only meant to apply
*permissions* (as in the values of the Folder/File Access comboboxes)
recursively, and not group and owner information (and it works in that regard).
The current version of Nautilus has a modified interface that makes more clear
that only permission are changed on enclosed files.

Re: [Bug 388547] Re: Volume keys don't work inside a full-screen game

2012-10-09 Thread Leonardo Torok
I believe we should have some global shortcut, like Ctrl + Alt + Del on
Windows, that calls a task manager to allow the user to kill the
problematic process.

2012/10/8 Matt Pharoah 388...@bugs.launchpad.net

This is extremely annoying when a fullscreen application crashes. Your
average user who doesn't know about the Ctrl+Alt+PrntScrn+K and
Ctrl+Alt+F1 tricks will assume that the operating system crashed which
is about the most significant usability issue you could possibly have.

And even for the experienced user, you either have to
Ctrl+Alt+PrntScrn+K back to the login screen and have all your
applications terminate, or you have to go to a fullscreen shell,
terminate the process, exit the shell, and return to X. All just because
some user application entered an infinite loop. Bad, bad, bad design.

[Bug 779585] [NEW] Evolution x Notify Applet: Evolution dont goes to systray

2011-05-08 Thread Leonardo Silva Amaral
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Since Evolution exists, isn't possible minimize evolution to Systray.
Ubuntu implements the notify applet to unify messenging facilities, but
different from Empathy or Gwibber, Evolution is aways on taskbar when
its open. A Workarround is use the systray plugin for Evolution and
send it ti systray, but this solution isnt possible. Since this feature
exists on Empathy (When close Empathy, it goes invisible but still
open, being possible access it from notify applet) and on Gwibber, i
decided file a BUG, because Evolution is the only application still in
taskbar and when its closed it really closes instead to just dissapear
and still available from notify applet.

[Bug 659331] [NEW] Evolution folders displayed incorrectly

2010-10-12 Thread Leonardo Torok
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

In Maverick, Evolution doesn't displays correctly the folders in my IMAP
acccount (Gmail). The Gmail acccount is displayed as Loading, but all
the folders are appearing in Local Folders section. Besides that, part
of the interface remains in English (I'm brazilian, the system is in
Portuguese, with all language packages installed). Sometimes, after
changing some configurations, the folders are displayed correctly and
even the interface language become portuguese. But the problem always
returns, no matter what settings are used.

Screenshots of the problem attached.

2010-10-12 Thread Leonardo Torok
Looks that the problem is with evolution-mapi, that I'm using to
connect to an Exchange 2007 server. Disabling the Exchange account
solves the issue. How can I use MAPI with Evolution without that
problem?

[Bug 40872] Re: Desktop icons are allowed to overlap

2010-08-11 Thread Leonardo Gaudino
Too bad this bug is still around, after 4 (four) years... Ubuntu 10.04, both
bugs still here. I think the 2 separate bugs (new auto-generated icons
overlapping and the missing auto-align to grid) are related each other. And I
don't think any too-complicated-problem answer could be accepted. Sorry.
My idea is that a 48px cell based grid can expand into greater cells, without
breaking the grid itself. up to 48px, then up to 144px, then up to 288px. The
space for a 2 lines filename help to keep consistent the grid. Of course longer
filenames should break as in the icon view in file manager.
I attach a mockup i did in about 1 hour of thinking. I'm not usability expert
nor developer, just a user. Please, take a look at this, not just flush down
the toilet as often seems to be. I'm GNOME user, I like it and your work, but
it's a shame that something Microsoft achieved 10 years ago, we can't still
have.
If it's too hard to code the behavior of my mockup, let disable resizing of
icons and have single size constraining grid (associated with self-align
option), with a grid size in pixels that we can set at least via gconf. Then,
every new icon should be generated after the last icon present, always. I'm
sure this can't satisfy everyone, but surely it is better then the unusable
thing it is now.
Keep up the good work.

[Bug 40872] Re: Desktop icons are allowed to overlap

2010-08-11 Thread Leonardo Gaudino
Oh, oh!!! Just another thing. With my grid thing, if you try to dnd big
icon where there are not enough free cells, dnd could silently abort.
If a user want to complicate his life with unreasonable big icons, it's
his own responsability, I think. Bye.

[Bug 529479] Re: Quadrapassel - ClutterGLX-CRITICAL error

2010-06-29 Thread Leonardo Montecchi
I'm experiencing this issue too, with an Intel 965 VGA. Moreover, since the
upgrade to Lucid I have also experienced simlar graphics problems with other
applications, namely XMBC and Gnome-Shell. They are both not usable in my
configuration, but they worked perfectly before the upgrade.
Therefore I think it is really something related to the graphic driver.
Strangely enough, compiz is working perfectly.

Re: [Bug 388547] Re: Volume keys don't work inside a full-screen game

2010-05-07 Thread Leonardo Torok
Actually, in all games (running natively). The games took control of the
keyboard, so it's not possible to change volume, mute sound, use
multimedia keys to stop/play musics.

Games using Wine doesn't have this problem. They don't capture
completely the keyboard (it's even possible to rotate compiz cube).

Re: [Bug 388547] Re: Volume keys don't work inside a full-screen game

2010-05-07 Thread Leonardo Torok
So it is a limitation of X.org? I think that we have 2 types of
fullscreen apps here:

- Fake fullscreen: Wine apps, Firefox, Totem. They don't grab the
keyboard. Basically, they hide the window decoration and fill the screen
with the window.

- True fullscreen: Games. They grab the keyboard control, so Gnome
can't do anything. If an app like this crashes, you can't even call
System Monitor to kill it (like ctrl + alt + del in Windows).

Would be nice if the Games had the same behaviour than the other
programs.

Em Sex, 2010-05-07 às 15:18 +, Chris Coulson escreveu:
I don't see how this could be a gnome-settings-daemon issue. gnome-
settings-daemon has a passive grab on the volume keys, and it will get
temporary focus during a keypress so that the keypresses are routed to
g-s-d. If a fullscreen game has an active grab on the keyboard or
pointer, then there is no way in the X protocol to break this and no way
for g-s-d to get the keypresses
