[Bug 1890632] [NEW] Can't open preferences
Public bug reported: I can't seem to access the rhymbox preferences. 'Preferences' does not appear in the application menu (see attachment) since ubuntu 17.10. [Bug 1890494] [NEW] Closing Rhythmbox does not free the media keys
Public bug reported: Closing Rhythmbox, does not free the media keys, and no program can use them after that, not even Rhythmbox if you restart it. This seems to be very close to bug #1036489, but that one was active 8 years ago, and was marked as expired 6 years ago. Restarting the machine frees the media keys again. Steps to reproduce: 1. Verify that the media keys work (restart the machine if not) 2. close rhythmbox with right click on the taskbar icon, use "stop & quit" 3. reopen rhythmbox, the media keys do not work. 1. Verify that the media keys work (restart the machine if not) 2. End the 'rhythmbox' process 3. reopen rhythmbox, the media keys do not work. 1. [Bug 1859113] [NEW] No support for Zstandard
Public bug reported: As stated on https://facebook.github.io/zstd/ "Zstandard is a real-time compression algorithm, providing high compression ratios. It offers a very wide range of compression / speed trade-off, while being backed by a very fast decoder". Other Linux distributions even started to use the Zstandard in the place of xz compression for their packages due to how fast the decompression is, even if there is a small penalty on ratio. On my own testing, I noticed 17% faster compression and 88% faster decompression compared to xz while there was a 3% differences on compression ratio for system images. With this bug report, I ask to add support for Zstandard on at least file-roller. Currently, I have to use the command line tool zstd to work with files compressed using Zstandard. On Thunar, *.zst files appear as unknown and file-roller says there is no support for this file type. [Bug 1855626] [NEW] All sound halts for one minute at midnight on Mondays
Public bug reported: Every week, on Monday at 00:00 all sound halts until the clock turns to 00:01. (Note as I often get confused with midnight/midday notations, I am referring to the minute after Sunday 23:59). When this happened the rhythmbox process had been running for more than a day, and I do not know if this happens if rhythmbox was launched on Sunday. I can confirm at the very least that this happened twice when the process was started on the previous Wednesday, and once on the previous Friday at 12:12. This bug happened to me many more times, but I did not check the process' information those times. The song timer stops during this minute. The last time this happened the song skipped a minute when it resumed, but from what I remember of the previous times the song had started off where it stopped (I could remember wrong though). The only difference I can think of between the last occurrence and the previous ones would be that I did not use any buttons this time around. What I expected to happen: The current song keeps playing What happened instead: The song halted for one minute Steps to reproduce: #1 Open Rhythmbox (if possible not on Sunday) #2 Wait for Sunday #3 Start listening to music before Sunday 23:59:59 #4 Wait for Monday 00:00 while music is still playing The song will stop until 00:01 ``` $ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS Release:18.04 $ apt-cache policy rhythmbox rhythmbox: Installed: 3.4.2-4ubuntu1 Candidate: 3.4.2-4ubuntu1 Version table: *** 3.4.2-4ubuntu1 500 500 http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ``` Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-6600U CPU @ 2.60GHz × 4 GNOME: 3.28.2 ** Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to rhythmbox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1855626 Title: All sound halts for one minute at midnight on Mondays To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/1855626/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1754862] Re: Screen remains active on lid close
Ok, I've found the problem. This was due to a setting I had enabled in "Gnome Tweak Tool": "Suspend when laptop lid is closed" to OFF Setting this option to OFF (the default is ON) adds an autostart link in .config/autostart/ignore-lid-switch-tweak.desktop, which runs the /usr/lib/gnome-tweak-tool/gnome-tweak-tool-lid-inhibitor utility, which creates a logind inhibitor: systemd-inhibit --list [...] Who: gnome-tweak-tool-lid-inhibitor (UID 1000/learts, PID 22291/gnome-tweak-too) What: handle-lid-switch Why: user preference Mode: block [...] "Mode: block" means that the signal is blocked and not passed to the other parts which may be handling the lid switch, including what I assume is the standard code handling the screen poweroff. By toggling the option to ON, the inhibitor goes away and the screen is turned off when I close the lid. Therefore, I advise everyone against using the "Suspend when laptop lid is closed" option in gnome tweak tools. A much better way to diisable suspend on lid cose is to edit /etc/systemd/logind.conf and set HandleLidSwitch=ignore. There are also the additional options of HandleLidSwitchDocked and HandleLidSwitchExternalPower (this one since systemd 238) to set a different action to take on lid close when the laptop is connected to an external monitor or AC power, respectively. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1754862 Title: Screen remains active on lid close To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1754862/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1616332] Re: gnome-software using hundreds of MB of memory when not in use
I do not seem to have the memory leak problem (the used RAM doesn't seem to grow constantly and without bounds), but still it uses constantly almost 200 MB of memory, which seems kind of unacceptable to me for an application which is usually run rarely or not at all for people who prefer using apt. [Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity Global Menu
Selection bias. This is a bug report in which the global menu functionality on unmaximized windows is reported as a bug. Of course the vast majority of people on this page are against this feature. So I'll speak in favor of it. Personally i love global menu (both on maximized and unmaximized windows) and it's *the* feature that keeps Ubuntu my OS of choice. Since when I got used to it no global menu - not an options as personal OS (and my screen is 1600x900, for those saying that if the screen is 1280x1024, than global menu is bad) For those talking about auto-hiding and 'easy discovery of menu options': there's HUD for that now. It's amazing. The concept behind it has been proved successful in the past, on desktops: dash/launchers vs desktop icons, web search engines vs web directories. Example: I wonder if GIMP has a function for lens flare. With HUD i press alt and type 'flare'. With the menu, i explore lists and sublists of menus categories until I find it (assuming I don't miss it)- The only case when the normal menus are better is when I want to just 'explore' the options, without looking for anything in particular (Let's see if there is something cool), How many times does that happens? 1 per application per lifetime? Well, for that time you can do the enormous effort of moving the mouse a little higher. A lot of people here lamenting Unity sounds a lot like those windows users that try some distro and say Where is the start button? What, there isn't one?! This OS is stupid!. That being said, unless it's difficult to implement (I doubt it) I don't see why not give the users the option to disable it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/682788 Title: Improve Unity Global Menu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/682788/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1170647] Re: Nautilus opens new window instead of restoring the minimized window
I tried to give a look into the problem, even though i'm not expert in unity internals, GTK, desktop files, ecc. There is a big chaos. There is a transition going on between using nautilus.desktop and nautilus-home.desktop (apparently Unity used to use nautilus-home.desktop but is converging to the standard nautilus.desktop), as a result there are various .desktop files. There are also .desktop files for the mounted external drives (and launcher icons for external drives have strange / incosistent behaviour, by the way: when clicking on them the nautilus window that opens is 'assigned' to the nautilus launcher [the small arrow is on that] but the drive launcher still controls it: it can bring the window on foreground if it isn't). On top of that, nautilus already has functions to determine if a specific location is already open, and in that case it avoids opening a new window for it (unless you use the --new-window parameter). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1170647 Title: Nautilus opens new window instead of restoring the minimized window To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1170647/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 822993] Re: Applying Permissions to enclosed files in Nautilus' Folder Properties window doesn't work
It was never a bug in the first place, just bad design: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=663649#c3 Cosimo Cecchi, Nautilus developer, said: Apply permissions to enclosed files button is only meant to apply *permissions* (as in the values of the Folder/File Access comboboxes) recursively, and not group and owner information (and it works in that regard). The current version of Nautilus has a modified interface that makes more clear that only permission are changed on enclosed files. ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged = Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/822993 Title: Applying Permissions to enclosed files in Nautilus' Folder Properties window doesn't work To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/822993/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 388547] Re: Volume keys don't work inside a full-screen game
I believe we should have some global shortcut, like Ctrl + Alt + Del on Windows, that calls a task manager to allow the user to kill the problematic process. 2012/10/8 Matt Pharoah 388...@bugs.launchpad.net This is extremely annoying when a fullscreen application crashes. Your average user who doesn't know about the Ctrl+Alt+PrntScrn+K and Ctrl+Alt+F1 tricks will assume that the operating system crashed which is about the most significant usability issue you could possibly have. And even for the experienced user, you either have to Ctrl+Alt+PrntScrn+K back to the login screen and have all your applications terminate, or you have to go to a fullscreen shell, terminate the process, exit the shell, and return to X. All just because some user application entered an infinite loop. [Bug 779585] [NEW] Evolution x Notify Applet: Evolution dont goes to systray
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution Since Evolution exists, isn't possible minimize evolution to Systray. Ubuntu implements the notify applet to unify messenging facilities, but different from Empathy or Gwibber, Evolution is aways on taskbar when its open. Since this feature exists on Empathy (When close Empathy, it goes invisible but still open, being possible access it from notify applet) and on Gwibber, i decided file a BUG, because Evolution is the only application still in taskbar and when its closed it really closes instead to just dissapear and still available from notify applet. ** Affects: evolution (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: applet empathy evolution network notify systray taskbar -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to evolution in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/779585 Title: Evolution x Notify Applet: Evolution dont goes to systray -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 40872] Re: Desktop icons are allowed to overlap
Too bad this bug is still around, after 4 (four) years... Ubuntu 10.04, both bugs still here. I think the 2 separate bugs (new auto-generated icons overlapping and the missing auto-align to grid) are related each other. And I don't think any too-complicated-problem answer could be accepted. Sorry. My idea is that a 48px cell based grid can expand into greater cells, without breaking the grid itself. up to 48px, then up to 144px, then up to 288px. The space for a 2 lines filename help to keep consistent the grid. Of course longer filenames should break as in the icon view in file manager. I attach a mockup i did in about 1 hour of thinking. I'm not usability expert nor developer, just a user. Please, take a look at this, not just flush down the toilet as often seems to be. I'm GNOME user, I like it and your work, but it's a shame that something Microsoft achieved 10 years ago, we can't still have. If it's too hard to code the behavior of my mockup, let disable resizing of icons and have single size constraining grid (associated with self-align option), with a grid size in pixels that we can set at least via gconf. Then, every new icon should be generated after the last icon present, always. I'm sure this can't satisfy everyone, but surely it is better then the unusable thing it is now. Keep up the good work. ** Attachment added: desktop-mockup.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/53480009/desktop-mockup.png -- Desktop icons are allowed to overlap https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/40872 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Actually, in all games (running natively). The games took control of the keyboard, so it's not possible to change volume, mute sound, use multimedia keys to stop/play musics. Games using Wine doesn't have this problem. They don't capture completely the keyboard (it's even possible to rotate compiz cube). Re: [Bug 388547] Re: Volume keys don't work inside a full-screen game
So it is a limitation of X.org? I think that we have 2 types of fullscreen apps here: - Fake fullscreen: Wine apps, Firefox, Totem. They don't grab the keyboard. Basically, they hide the window decoration and fill the screen with the window. - True fullscreen: Games. They grab the keyboard control, so Gnome can't do anything. If an app like this crashes, you can't even call System Monitor to kill it (like ctrl + alt + del in Windows). Would be nice if the Games had the same behaviour than the other programs. If a fullscreen game has an active grab on the keyboard or pointer, then there is no way in the X protocol to break this and no way for g-s-d to get the keypresses -- Volume keys don't work inside a full-screen game https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/388547 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
