[Bug 1767817] Re: Full text search does not work

2018-08-02 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Hi !

I have the same issue as I stated here :
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1061855/ubuntu-18-04-and-tracker-files-
properly-indexed-but-not-searchable-in-gs-naut

1. I installed tracker
2. I indexed all my data (as indicated on the command line by "tracker status"
/ "tracker daemon")
3. I checked whether everything was properly indexed by making some queries on
the command line based on the content of some text files : the command line
"tracker search" command did yield the right results
4. I made the same searches from Nautilus : they yielded no result : Nautilus
(and thus the shell) only seem to use the "mlocate" database and not the
tracker one.

Hypothesis : the fact Ubuntu makes use of Nautilus 3.26 while the rest
of the Gnome stack is 3.28 ?

Actually, did anyone manage to get Nautilus 3.26 (and thus Gnome Shell
with the nautilus search provider) from Ubuntu 18.04 to use the result
of the tracker indexing ? I checked all possible settings in dconf-
editor and found no relevant option.

Cheers :-)

[Bug 742335] Re: Totem : impossible to move cursor on MP3 files (Natty - Oneiric)

Under natty, the issue can be worked around (and other seeking problems)
by using the gstreamer PPA.

I wonder why the problem exists under Oneiric, though.

[Bug 772236] [NEW] Totem hangs when seeking within flac files (gstreamer)

2011-04-28 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Public bug reported:

This issue occurs with Totem but also with any gstreamer-based player
(Banshee, Amarok with Phonon-gstreamer), in Natty and not in Maverick.
(they also occur in other distros such as Archlinux)

HOW TO REPRODUCE :
- play flac files
- seek a couple of time inside the files
- after 2-3 tries, the music stops and the GUI freezes

It occurs with many .flac files (made with Banshee), but not all of
them. If necessary, I can provide a sample .flac file (but it shouldn't
be necessary as it occurs with most of them).

[Bug 305546] Re: Nautilus crashing/freezing when opening folder with svg file

2011-03-08 Thread Mahendra Tallur
I also experience this issue (Ubuntu 10.10, up to date, amd64) when
opening a directory containing a svg file embedding many big jpeg
pictures. (no tiff at all)

Actually, it occurs with 2 similar svg files. The 1st one does embed all
jpeg files and the preview doesn't even have the time to be generated.
The second one only contains links to the jpeg pictures, so a blank
preview is generated.

However, *In both cases*, Nautilus eventually quits responding and I
have to kill it. In the first case, during the preview calculation, in
the second case, shortly after selecting the svg file.

[Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2011-01-20 Thread Mahendra Tallur
It may be a factor, but as I said earlier (what, you didn't reread the
355 comments ? ;-) I managed to reproduce the issue (especially in the
bottom panel, next to the show desktop applet) from a clean user
profile, with the default set of applets.

What was particularly striking was the fact that re-creating afterwards
exactly the same set of applets made the issue more difficult to occur.
From the default set, I could force it to happen by killing the
panel from the terminal a couple of times.

Omer Akram : sadly, the upstream report didn't yield any result as the
(gnome) triager didn't manage to reproduce the issue, which is a real
one, as I can reproduce it easily personally, and I know at least one

Shunsuke Akagi : can you add some more data to the upstream report I
made on the Gnome bugtracker ? Maybe it could help the triager / GNOME
developers understand / reproduce it.

Shunsuke Akagi : thanks for your reply !

Actually, you have to switch to TTY0 :

- type ctrl + left-alt + F1

- ps aux | grep nautilus then kill -9 [nautilus process]

It works from a default Ubuntu installation unless you disabled the TTY

[Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-12-18 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Joaquin : this is a serious upstream bug that will continue to affect
other distros that don't use Gnome Shell, that will continue to affect
users who want to keep the old interface, and that will continue to
affect users of the LTS.

I really don't see why it wouldn't be fixable ? Now it even seems we
have some ways to reproduce it almost each time. Well, if anyone can
confirm that, when invoking killall gnome-panel from the guest
account (or unmodified out of the box configuration), it corrupts the
show desktop icon practically each time. Can people check that ?

Now I'll shut up until I really have some actual new pieces of
information :)

[Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-12-17 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Lonnie : I agree... In July I kind of said please guys, let's stop
complaining / commenting if no new relevant piece of information is
added... But... This bug has been here for so long it's getting
ridiculous (no offense to anyone involved, but this report was created
in sept 2009 and almost everyone gets this bug).

It occurs almost every day on my setup and I saw it occur on every setup
I installed Ubuntu. (provided Compiz was enabled)

I'm definitely not the kind to complain at all, but this is making me
lose faith in the development process :) It seems the GNOME devs don't
use Ubuntu so don't reproduce it and don't care (as it seems related to
the Human / Murrine GTK Engine) / or are too busy with GNOME shell / or
the Ubuntu devs are too busy with UNITY and think anyway in 11.04 the
old UI will be ditched.

But well, the bug will still be in the LTS for one more year (!). And
many people will prefer to keep the old Gnome panels interface.

Well I don't know what to say. Should we set up a bounty ? Or a petition
? I get phone calls of my friends telling me they cannot shut down the
computer or access the applets... Gees !

[Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-12-17 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Joaquin : TOMA ? Googled it, didn't find :)

All : hmm, I'm not sure this is relevant but this seems interesting.
Usually I only keep a top panel and corruption appears in the indicators
area and disappears with a killall gnome-panel. I recently started my
/home from scratch and kept everything as conservative out of the
box as possible.

I noticed that : corruption appears here more frequently in the bottom
panel (show desktop applet) (and once in a while in the top panel near
the canonical indicators). So this seems unrelated to the indicators.
More importantly, when calling killall gnome-panel corruption doesn't
disappear systematically. It actually makes it happen about 50% of the
cases !

In other word : starting from an out of the box' Ubuntu install with
Compiz, corruption may be triggered when calling a couple of times
killall gnome-panel and can thus be reproduced very easily. Also, it
is thus 1) not related to the indicators 2) not related to the GNOME
startup itself as it can be reproduced afterwards

We may add 3) seems to be related to themes that use the Murrine GTK
engine ? 4) is definitely triggered when Compiz is enabled.

I'm making assumptions and definitely didn't re-read the hundreds of
comments of this bugreport. Do you think guys we could/should set up a
wiki page or a poll or another statistical tool to have a better
consciousness / visibility of the different factors at play ?

(also : noone interested by a bounty ?)

[Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-12-17 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Sorry for polluting this thread even more but : some core GNOME
developers do read the upstream bugreport here :
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=596923

Can we agree on a set of facts that we could forward to them ? For
instance, V. Untz is aware that the bug is not triggered by the
indicators as corruption can happen even if all of them are removed.
Also, he seems to take seriously the fact that it would be related to
the Murrine GTK engine.

[Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-12-17 Thread Mahendra Tallur
One more thing that I find interesting :

- earlier I said I could trigger some corruption in the bottom panel, near the
show desktop applet, by invoking killall gnome-panel a couple of times :
this is true
- HOWEVER, I moved the applets and put them back EXACTLY the way they were
before and noticed the corruption didn't happen anymore when calling killall
gnome-panel.
- I thought wtf ? so I started a guest session. The panel looks exactly the
same. And now, calling killall gnome-panel does indeed trigger the very same
corruption in more than 50% of the cases.

But what can be the differences between 2 bottom panels that contain
exactly the same applets at the same location, one of which does trigger
the bug easily...

2 more important pieces of information :

- issue also occurs with the Nouveau Nvidia driver and not only the proprietary

- to unlock the mouse you actually have to kill the nautilus process from the

[Bug 660222] Re: Totem freeze when click and drag a folder or folders

2010-12-14 Thread Mahendra Tallur
I was about to report this. This is a REALLY tricky bug but I now manage
to reproduce it within 30 seconds...

1) open totem
2) play a music file (please use the (public domain) Amiga .mod files I will
attach below, for some reason, I manage to reproduce the problem more easily
with those -- but it also occurs with mp3s)
3) now drag a 2nd music file above the totem window. DO NOT DROP YET ! Just
move the mouse cursor very quickly BETWEEN THE VISUALIZATION (goom enabled) AND
PLAYLIST panes. Do it for about 15 seconds
4) the file icon may disappear after a few seconds. If it doesn't : play the
2nd file and drag the 1st file ( goto 2 until the problem occurs)
5) once the dragged icon has disappeared : the GUI is completely locked.
Actually not completely :
- the music is still beiing played
- you can still move the mouse cursor but its state is frozen (it can be a
move add or normal cursor)
- sometimes you can still scroll within the playlist -- as if the mouse cursor
was locked inside the playlist
- nothing else responds and you have to kill the X server !

This is a really weird bug but I managed to trigger it about 15 times in
half an hour. Please try with the mod music files below. I also attach
a gdb backtrace (with the totem symbols installed but maybe more are
required ?) -- I started gdb until the text console and exported the
display for totem.

Please note : I am using the nvidia proprietary drivers. I triggered the
bug with both compiz enabled AND disabled.

[Bug 684343] [NEW] Totem hangs randomly when playing several mp3 with covers in a row

2010-12-02 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Hi !

Here's an issue I can easily reproduce + I attached a stack trace.

I have to :
1) open totem
2) open a couple of mp3s : in my case : the Machinarium soundtrack, in mp3s,
with a cover.jpg file that is displayed while playing
3) play some tracks : I have to change the track from 5 to 50 files before the
problem actually occurs.
4) it doesn't crash but the GUI hangs. Also, sound is played but the cover is
not displayed when it happens (black area instead).
-- only solution is to kill the task
-- the attached stack trace was after loading about 50 mp3 files ; the totem
GUI hanged when trying to play 09 The Black Cap Brothergood Theme.mp3 but
that is random. During my previous tests without gdb, the crash occured much
more quickly.

What should happen : play the file / display the cover
What happens : GUI freezes / cover not displayed / but it still plays the mp3
file

Cheers !

[Bug 662346] [NEW] Faulty PDF print preview with specific pdf file (provided)

2010-10-17 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Hi !

Here's an issue I encounter with a very specific PDF file (attached)
under 10.10. A friend reproduced the issue on his setup as well. It's is
100% reproducible.

1) open the provided PDF file with evince : it is displayed properly on the
screen
2) open the print dialog - then print preview (or print it on actual paper)
-- the document will look completely trashed (I'll attach the screenshot
below as well)

Maybe this bug should be filed against libpoppler, I don't really know what
component is at fault here.
Thanks for listening ! :-)

[Bug 655977] [NEW] Vertical position of chat windows not remembered properly

2010-10-06 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Hi !

This bug is 100% reproducible here, with without Compiz. Maverick RC.

The *vertical* coordinate of chat windows are remembered. HOWEVER, when
I put them at the very bottom of the screen, close re-open them, they
are always displayed a little higher, as if the extreme vertical value
was set incorrectly. If I close them a second time re-open them, the
position remains the same as before (that is to say, about 1/10 of the
screen above the bottom)

I'm using a 1920x1080 screen resolution.

Cheers !

[Bug 655977] Re: Vertical position of chat windows not remembered properly

2010-10-06 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Well, I think my former post replied to them but I'll elaborate.

* Is this reproducible?
Yes each time.

* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
1) open a chat window
2) move it to the very bottom of the screen
3) close the chat window
4) re-open the chat window
-- its vertical position is moved about 1/10 of the screen height toward the
top

2010-10-06 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Ah, I figured out the issue didn't occur after removing the
~/.config/Empathy/geometry.ini file.

Apparently, to trigger it, you need to reduce the vertical size of the
chat window (once) and then try to reproduce the steps above.

I'm sorry, I should have tested this before.

So to sum up the issue :

* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
1) open a chat window
2) reduce its height (only has to be done the first time)
3) move it to the very bottom of the screen
4) close the chat window
5) re-open the chat window
-- its vertical position is moved about 1/10 of the screen height toward the

If the window height is raised, the issue doesn't occur !

[Bug 649738] [NEW] Rhythmbox stars (ratings) not updated properly when scrolling up in the playlist

2010-09-28 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Hi !

This bug occurs in Maverick and didn't exist in Lucid.

When displaying a ratings column in the playlist and scrolling up in a
playlist (not down) the stars are not displayed properly as you can see
in the provided screenshot. (either invisible or partly drawn)

How to reproduce ?
1) in the options, tick the ratings column
2) in a playlist (big enough so that you can scroll into it) rate a few tracks,
rather at the top of the playlist
3) scroll from the bottom to the point where the rated tracks are, preferably
with the elevator (because when the mouse is hovering over the playlist lines,
it forces a redraw of those lines)
4) notice that the stars are incorrectly / not drawn

[Bug 646798] Re: eog window size exceeds screen height

2010-09-28 Thread Mahendra Tallur
See below a screenshot of what occurs when compiz is enabled in Maverick
beta : the eog window is oversized, thus one cannot see the bottom of
the picture nor its status bar. It happens with all pictures that do not
fit the screen and have to be resized by eog.

Should I file a bug against Compiz also ? I don't know if Compiz or eog
is the culprit... I reported it upstream (eog) but no one seems aware of
this bug.

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-09-25 Thread Mahendra Tallur
I mentioned upstream that I did manage to reproduce the issue when using
only one panel with **no single piece of Canonical applet** ( obviously
with Compiz enabled) -- only standard Gnome stuff. So, what else can
differ from a regular Gnome setup on another distro ? I tried to switch
to Clearlooks. No issue so far after forcing many reboots, but I
wouldn't draw any conclusion too soon...

BTW, Ambiance Radiance rely on the Murrine GTK engine. Could it be at
fault ?

[I just have a single panel with (from left to right) the gnome Menu,
icons, the task-bar, system monitor, virtual desktops, the standard
notifications applet and the time applet.]

Anyway : did anyone manage to trigger it with the standard Clearlooks
theme ?

The Gnome devs are pretty helpless about this issue... As some of us
said above, I think maybe the bug priority should be raised. Because
otherwise I think it's gonna stay for another 6 months, which is pretty
annoying for average users :-)

Thanks again to everyone reading this !

[Bug 646798] [NEW] eog window size exceeds screen height

Public bug reported:

well.

[Bug 635712] [NEW] Nautilus : the new default thumbnails size wastes screen space with not other advantage

2010-09-11 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Hi !

This is a request for changing the default value
schemas/apps/nautilus/thumbnail_size from 64 (new default value in the
current gnome, in Maverick) back to 96 (former value in Lucid for
instance).

Indeed : this new value makes the thumbnails smaller, but the grid is
still as wide as it used to, which makes the space between icons huge
while bringing less information than before.

Is it possible to set this default value back to 96 ? ... or to fix the
excessive spacing ?

Cheers !

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-07-10 Thread Mahendra Tallur
I think we should stop adding a comment each time this issue starts /
stop occuring : the problem with this particular issue is indeed that
no-one seems to have figured out how to reproduce it reliably. It
happens, then stops for a few days / weeks then happens again.

What is obvious is that the scope of this bug is very wide, does affect
most people one day, and is extremely annoying for joe users that
won't have the idea to do a killall gnome-panel or shutdown -h etc.

What we urgently need is to establish a reliable protocol to pinpoint
this issue, as soon as possible... This is most concerning something
that seems to be very superficial isn't fixed several months about the
LTS release. (I don't want to blame anyone, though, I'm aware many devs
do code in their spare time)

[Bug 571868] Re: Eye of Gnome + status bar date plugin hangs with specific PNG pictures

2010-06-18 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Savvas Radevic : can you please tell me what additional pieces
information are required for this bugreport as it seems you did manage
to reproduce this issue ?

Please note :
- it happens from a fresh install, even from the liveCD
- one just has to enable the status bar date plugin from eog and use the
example picture provided above
- if it doesn't occur, just launch some CPU intensive tasks : it'll raise the
bug probability

(BTW : it still happens as of today - almost vanilla i386 ubuntu)

Cheers

2010-05-04 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Hello Sevvas. Well, I somehow doubt it (unless it's a different issue)
as it also happens (here) when booting from the CD ! Can you try it as
well, please ?

Cheers !

[Bug 571868] [NEW] Eye of Gnome + status bar date plugin hangs with specific PNG pictures

2010-04-29 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

Using Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 (also occurs from the LiveCD) :

Short form : opening some PNG pictures with transparency (as the one
provided here) with eog, with the date in the status bar plugin hangs
eog. Without this plugin : it works as expected.

Long form : Actually, the first time you launch eog with those PNG
files, no window is displayed, no core dump occurs, eog doesn't return,
there's no message on the terminal. If you launch it a second time,
eog appears with a blank picture. Menus do react though, so you can
still close eog.

This issue already existed in Karmic. It can be reproduced every time
here (with the provided PNG picture, and some others -- it never
happened, here, with regular jpg photographs).

Cheers, thanks for reading this !

[Bug 571868] Re: Eye of Gnome + status bar date plugin hangs with specific PNG pictures

2010-04-29 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Hello Pedro. Here's the backtrace you asked for. Are you using an AMD64
or 32 bits distro ? Did you enable the aforementioned plugin ? Here, it
occurs everytime, even from the CD (AMD64).

I'm gonna check whether it also happens from the i386 CD as well in an
hour or so.

Thank you !

[Bug 571868] Re: Eye of Gnome + status bar date plugin hangs with specific PNG pictures

2010-04-29 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Ok then : it also occurs when booting from the 32 bits 10.04 CD.

The steps are :
- boot from the CD (64 or 32 bits)
- open the device where the .PNG file attached above is stored
- open it
- preferences - plugins - tick date in statusbar
- close it
- reopen the png

then, with the very same picture :

in about 33% or more of the cases : no window is displayed
in about 33% of the cases : eog displays a grey picture
in about 33% of the cases or less : it is displayed properly

I just close / reopen it several times in a row and randomly get one of
those behaviours...

Cheers !

[Bug 571868] Re: Eye of Gnome + status bar date plugin hangs with specific PNG pictures

2010-04-29 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Interestingly, if I launch in parallel a very CPU heavy task (i.e. VLC
with HD DVB-T channels), the rates above differ significantly. It almost
works properly 9 times out of 10...

So, depending on the machine, tasks, and so on, one may not be able to
reproduce it...

[Bug 482439] Re: Moved .odt file to the desktop not visible if ooo thumbnailer installed meanwhile and thumbnail not generated yet

2009-11-19 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Thanks Sebastien. Okay, I made a report upstream. Or actually, I added a
comment to an upstream bug report that seemed related.

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=599475

There seems to be different conditions that lead to invisible files /
directory accesses that do not end properly, when some thumbnails fail
to generate, for some reason.
