[Bug 252237] Re: gstreamer alsa mixer renders gnome volume controls useless

2008-09-28 Thread Mark Falcey
I am not sure if this is the same bug, but it is very similar. I am
using Hadry 8.04.1 and ALSA 1.0.15

I am experiencing this problem also but only with my usb headest. If I
select the headset in System/Preferences/Sound I can control the volume
with the multimedia keys but the left always drops to zero when I change
the volume, Right channel reacts normally. This also happens when I have
them selected in the panel Volume Control and try to adjust the volume
with the mouse.

This does not happen in the Pulse Audio Volume Control. When the
sliders are out of lock from the above using the PA Volume Control locks
the sliders back together and allows them to be adjusted in a normal
fashion.

This also does not happen with my C-Media 8768 PCI card or AC'97 on
board sound or with any of the pulseaudio virtual devices.

Is seems to be a strictly ALSA USB problem from here.

[Bug 236903] Re: Nautilus does not detect windows shares on the network

2008-06-03 Thread Mark Falcey
I can confirm this problem with nautilus and samba shares using nautilus
2.22.3 along with a few other problems.

The following is from my .xsessions-errors file:

[Bug 234479] [NEW] faulty dependencies in gdm cause login failure

2008-05-23 Thread Mark Falcey
Public bug reported:

I found this with both the 386i and amd64 install of hardy 8.04 though they
seem a little different in how they affect login.
It seems to particularly effect those who have Athlon64 processors.

After initial installation login fails. The login screen appears and the user
can login but it recycles back to the login screen.
Gnome safe mode login works and autologin works but any login through gdm fails
due to the following:

a message in the auth.log ( I don't have the exact message from the logs
but it is something like this)

(pam) gdm: authentication fail. pam_smbpass missing...

In the 386i install this can be fixed by installing libpam_smbpass
In the amd64 install the following message is then generated:

May 23 17:09:36 mark-desktop gdm[5479]: pam_smbpass(gdm:auth):
unrecognized option [missingok]

This can be remedied by removing libpam_smbpass completely with Synaptic
to remove the dependencies

In both installs this leads to the following message:

May 23 18:36:43 mark-desktop NetworkManager: WARN  nm_spawn_process():
nm_spawn_process('/usr/sbin/nscd -i hosts'): could not spawn process.
(Failed to execute child process /usr/sbin/nscd (No such file or
directory))

This can be remedied by installing and then removing completely nscd in
Synaptic.

Only then can a normal login proceed.

Though this is not such a big problem for someone who knows how to get
around in Ubuntu or Linux (I had not used Linux for about 10 years), it
can be a show stopper for many new users and should be fixed asap.

There are more than a few reports of this in the Ubuntu Forums.

The iso images that I used were streamed from MIT media lab, the 386i on
April 27, and the amd64 maybe two weeks later and the checksums and disk
checks at install were OK on both.

[Bug 234479] Re: faulty dependencies in gdm cause login failure

2008-05-23 Thread Mark Falcey
Removal of libpam_smbpass leads directly to nscd issue after next
reboot. nscd may be removable after rebbot in amd64 but removal is
possible with 386i after reboot. Exploration ongoing...

This problem is apparent in 2.6.24-16-generic and is persistent through
2.6.24-17-generic update at least in amd64 version.
