I observed this bug on a week old Hardy install. My xorg.conf is basically empty (generated by the alternate installer): Section InputDevice Identifier Generic Keyboard Driver kbd Option XkbRules xorg Option XkbModel pc102 Option XkbLayout de Option XkbVariantnodeadkeys Option XkbOptionslv3:ralt_switch EndSection Section InputDevice Identifier Configured Mouse Driver mouse EndSection Section Device Identifier Configured Video Device EndSection Section Monitor Identifier Configured Monitor EndSection Section Screen Identifier Default Screen Monitor Configured Monitor EndSection I never saw this before (breezy installation continuously updated to hardy). I have the same graphics chip, same screen resolution as the original reporter. For me, removing the file helps only temporarily. Another me too. CPU usage goes up into the 90%s after opening the Applications menu for the first time (I'm not using the menu applet, only Alt+F1).
