The key can be played anywhere you want as long as it's in line with the
config, the important part is the public and private key are both
there.

Subject: [Bug 375341] Re: ssh-add/ssh-askpass (gnome) not launching graphical
prompt on connect

So, the conclusion is that ssh-askpass will not show if the key is
placed in any other location than .ssh ?

It seems so, for every key under .ssh (regardless of filename), ssh-
askpass launches properly. But if the key is somewhere else ssh-askpass
ignores .ssh/config

It seems like a bug to me, unless ssh-askpass is supposed not to follow
.ssh/config

Btw, the behaviour describe here was consistent in:

Check the notes, and it will explain the fix, it's actually not a bug,
but a change in behaviour, took me a while to get to the bottom of it.

[Bug 578035] Re: ssh-askpass-gnome doesn't prompt for password in any release post ubuntu 8.10 32/64bit

2010-10-12 Thread Matt Darcy
after a very short and helpful conversation with the gnome-keyring
developers this problem is now resolved.

The problem is that the way gnome-keyring checks for public/private keys
has changed.

The old process used to check for ~/.ssh/id_?sa

now it checks for a matching public key in a *.pub format too.

For gnome-keyring to actually prompt you to unlock the key, both the
public and private keys must be in your local ~/.ssh directory, this is
why some users are seeing this as a problem, and others not.

I was always keen to keep my public and private keys separate for legacy
security issues, I've just dumped my public key with a .pub extension in
my ~/.ssh directory and gnome-keyring started working, bang. No
technical problem, just user error and a lack of information about the
changes to gnome-keyring package in the ubuntu community/packager.

2010-09-02 Thread Matt Darcy
While this input is valid and appreciated, I'm not sure how gnome-
keyring-prompt/gnome-keyring knows if this is a new key, or an old key.

I'm using a DSA key, what is in this key file that is suggesting to
gnome it's an old key ?

I'm asking this as my keys are populated a lot around the place so I'm
interested in how gnome knows it's an old key, and looking at options as
deleting all my keys and re-deploying them isn't an option I'm keen to
do.

[Bug 503938] Re: ssh-add/ssh-askpass (gnome) not launching graphical prompt on connect.

2010-01-07 Thread Matt Darcy
I'm an ubuntu member, but I think you where trying to say someone on the
development team.
As you can see from the earlier bug, bug #375341 it was confirmed and multiple
people had the problem.
I fully understand how hard it is to fix something that you can't replicate,
and I'm not expecting an Ubuntu developer to fix it, but at least understand
the problem and report it upstream if applicable with the correct information.

The reason I'm pushing for Ubuntu to be involved in this are

a.) this worked in all previous releases up to 8.10 - anything past 8.10
doesn't work.
b.) Fedora works on multiple releases 8 - 11, and I fully understand that just
because fedora works doesnt mean it's not something Ubuntu specific.
c.) I've not seen a bug report on RHEL/Centos, or Debian for anything similar
(I will test on Debian and RHEL asap personally).

these three things are suggesting to me at this early stage that its
either a bug that the Ubuntu package versions are triggering, or a bug
in the way Ubuntu intergrates it.

Either way I feel it prudent to get and push for Ubuntu developers to
become involved as this is now a carry over bug from 9.04.

While you don't have access to a machine that can replicate this problem
(I've tested it on 3 of my machines so far - same failure on all, clean
install only) I'd be happy to in the first instance

a.) provide debugging information for anything you request
b.) provide access to a machine with this problem.

>From that point that may be enough to understand the problem and
progress it to right path.

no - the bug is logged to ubuntu, it is up to ubuntu to work with
upstream to resolve the issue.

This issue is not present in other distros, such as fedora and is
working in ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10, on the same hardware.

I'd expect ubuntu to work with the upstream developers to fix this if
upstream patching is required, or ubuntu developers to resolve this if
it is specific to ubuntu

[Bug 503946] [NEW] Password box greyed out connecting to a hidden wirless network

2010-01-06 Thread Matt Darcy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

Connecting to a hidden SSID network can take a long time in Ubuntu 9.10 and
sometimes even fail.
I have configued the hidden SSID network in the gnome-network-admin tool, and
when it does auto connect it works fine, however if it doesn't auto connect (5
+ minutes) I have to use the left click option "connect to hidden wireless
network"

When this happens a dialog pops up allowing me to select the SSID
network I'd like to connect to - keep in mind mine is pre-configured.

when I select my pre-configured SSID network from the available drop
down list. the password box is blank, stopping it from connecting. The
password entry field and connect button is greyed out so there is no way
to then enter a password and connect.

I have attatched images to illustrate.

the auto connect problem has been a problem since 9.04, now in 9.10 the
problem is worse and I can't do a work around anymore.

[Bug 503938] [NEW] ssh-add/ssh-askpass (gnome) not launching graphical prompt on connect.

2010-01-06 Thread Matt Darcy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

This is a duplicate bug for bug #375341 which was 9.04 specific.
This bug is now relevant to 9.10. Exactly the same hardware and conditions.

SUMMARY
On previous release ubuntu 8.04/ubuntu 8.10 when using ssh to connect to remote
hosts with ssh private keys from within the gnome environment, the ssh-askpass
(gnome-ssh-askpass renamed) is launched to prompt for the pass phrase for the
keys in $HOME/$USER/.ssh/{identity,id_dsa,id_rsa} once this pass phrase is
input it is handled by gnome-keyring/ssh-agent for future connects so that no
passphrase is required for any machine using that key.

On a clean install of ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 the behaviour is different.
Upon connection to an ssh host, ssh-askpass is no longer launched and
instead the ssh terminal application prompts you for the key.

Without the setup of scripts/wrappers, this key must be entered every
time a user wants to connect to a host using that private ssh key.

There are many work arounds for this (using ssh agent, launching ssh-
askpass as a session at login etc) but I believe this is either a bug,
or an expected change in behavior in how gnome is intergrated with ssh.

I have been unable to find any documentation to indicate a change in
behavior in the gnome desktop environment.

I am unsure if this bug request should sit with the gnome-desktop
environment, gnome-keyring or the ssh team, I suspect this is a keyring
intergration issue, but I have been unable to find any
design/documentation on how keyring was working with 8.04/8.10 and ssh.

this problem appears in both 32 and 64bit versions of the 9.04 and 9.10
distributions.

On previous release ubuntu 8.04/ubuntu 8.10 when using ssh to connect to
remote hosts with ssh private keys from within the gnome environment,
the ssh-askpass (gnome-ssh-askpass renamed) is launched to prompt for
the pass phrase for the keys in
$HOME/$USER/.ssh/{identity,id_dsa,id_rsa} once this pass phrase is input
it is handled by gnome-keyring/ssh-agent for future connects so that no
passphrase is required for any machine using that key.

On a clean install of ubuntu 9.04 the behaviour is different. Upon
connection to an ssh host, ssh-askpass is no longer launched and instead
the ssh terminal application prompts you for the key.

I am unsure if this bug request should sit with the gnome-desktop
environment, gnome-keyring or the ssh team, I suspect this is a keyring
intergration issue, but I have been unable to find any
design/documentation on how keyring was working with 8.04/8.10 and ssh.

this problem appears in both 32 and 64bit versions of the 9.04 OS

[Bug 115925] Re: just after I opened a new window; ssh connection to remote server with key passphrase reqest

2007-05-21 Thread Matt Darcy
I can't see what this bug report is actually reporting as a bug

Do you actually mean that as you open a gnome termainal it fires off to
do an ssh connetion to a remote server on its own ?

[Bug 93551] Re: Missing Shutdown and Reboot buttons from gnome "power" button

2007-05-20 Thread Matt Darcy
This bug has been fixed by using the following process.
Go to: System -> Administration -> Login Window

On the Local tab under "Menu Bar" the option "Show Actions menu" has to
be enabled.

this resolves the issue on both the shutdown button screen and on the
login/gdm screen.

However this is a fix of the symptoms, the problem appears to be either
a theme or gdm theme has the ability to change this setting.

** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu)

[Bug 93551] Re: Missing Shutdown and Reboot buttons from gnome "power" button

2007-03-26 Thread Matt Darcy
Please keep this bug report free or random clutter

1.) this bug is reported on Ubuntu x86 6.06 fully patched
2.) I do not have installed any graphical enchancments such as beryl/compiz/xgl

You report references Edgy, Fesity which is beta software and Beryl.
Totally different senario

[Bug 93551] Re: Missing Shutdown and Reboot buttons from gnome "power" button

2007-03-22 Thread Matt Darcy
Hi

I agree this is likey coming from a configuration, however gdm appears
to be configured to enable the correct settings, I've swapped gtk and
gdm themes to see if they make a difference. I agree this is a low
priority but if this does turn out to be a bug perhaps say with a
downloaded update then this could effect more people.

I'd be happy to work with people to resolve this but I have taken this
as far as I can at this moment by verfying the settings "should" work
therefore I can only assume there is something else at work.

[Bug 93551] Re: Missing Shutdown and Reboot buttons from gnome "power" button

2007-03-22 Thread Matt Darcy
Hi,

certainly

# Reboot, Halt and suspend commands, you can add different commands separated
# by a semicolon. GDM will use the first one it can find.
RebootCommand=/sbin/shutdown -r now "Rebooted from gdm menu."
HaltCommand=/sbin/shutdown -h now "Halted from gdm menu."
SuspendCommand=/usr/sbin/pmi action sleep

the shutdown command is present and works as thats how I've been shutting the
laptop down

$ ls -la /sbin/shutdown
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 18572 2006-05-23 11:39 /sbin/shutdown

[Bug 93551] Re: Missing Shutdown and Reboot buttons from gnome "power" button

2007-03-21 Thread Matt Darcy
Hi,

Yes I am using GDM, I have not changed the GDM config myself, but I
believe something has ( I can only assume the application of a theme as
I have lost my shutdown buttons from gdm also)

Here is a prudent portion of my gdm config

# The Actions menu (formerly system menu) is shown in the greeter, this is the
# menu that contains reboot, shutdown, suspend, config and chooser. None of
# these is available if this is off. They can be turned off individually
# however.
SystemMenu=true
# Configuration is available from the system menu of the greeter.
ConfigAvailable=false
# Should the chooser button be shown. If this is shown, GDM can drop into
# chooser mode which will run the xdmcp chooser locally and allow the user to
# connect to some remote host. Local XDMCP does not need to be enabled,
# however.
ChooserButton=true

I am not using XGL/Compiz/Beryl anything like that

[Bug 93551] Missing Shutdown and Reboot buttons from gnome "power" button

2007-03-18 Thread Matt Darcy
Public bug reported:

Using ubuntu 6.06 on an MSI S260 laptop.
when pressing the "power" button on the top right hand side of the top gnome
pannel, the screen greys out and a new menu of log out, lock screen, switch
user along the top and shutdown, hibernate, reboot along the bottom.

At some point during updates, I can't be exact as I don't often use the
power off menu, the power off and reboot button appears to have
dissapeared.

I am not running any 3rd party applications or graphical enchancments
such as beryl or compiz.

I'm using a fully updated Xorg from 6.06 with the intel 810 driver.

Ubuntu is running fully updated on all installed packages.
